In the round of testing I did before writing comment #4, I tried both with the dock and without the dock attached. I also tested with nothing plugged in at all aside from the direct HDMI connection.
If I can find a mini-DisplayPort cable I have some other hardware I can test as well to see if maybe it's HDMI or display specific.
