My original workaround was to install 3.6.3 (on a fresh install of 12.04 - the package in synaptic is 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu2~ubuntu12.10.1). It was not a problem at first but I now find (after a recent update) that the problem affects this version as well. I thought it may have been caused by using pcf/bitmap fonts, but this is not the case.
