[Bug 124536] Re: GDM login doesn't respect/stick the chosen locale

2008-01-17 Thread Ulrich Hobelmann
Experiencing the same problem here on Ubuntu 7.10.

My setting is to use German for the GDM login screen and for new user
accounts (friends, guest account, etc.), but I want my own user to use
an English session.

However, GDM does *not* start with the previous language setting,
which would work nicely, but it always mentions German, so that simply
logging in would end me up with a German session (and the question if I
want to make German my new default).

An option to make GDM use previous language by default (and use the
system setting (German) for new users, would be perfect. On my old PC
this actually worked, but with my current (new) installation, it
doesn't.

[Bug 124536] Re: GDM login doesn't respect/stick the chosen locale

2008-01-17 Thread Ulrich Hobelmann
Sorry for the noise. I just logged out again to try some more things,
and there it was: previous language.

So yes, it works again. I have no idea why it didn't work the last 10
or so times I logged out and in again, but now GDM allows me to simply
use the previously set language for any user. :-)

[Bug 124536] Re: GDM login doesn't respect/stick the chosen locale

2007-09-21 Thread felix.rommel
As far as I understand the bug, I can confirm it:

I have german for GDM LOGIN screen. German is also the default for
user sessions.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Type your username and press Enter
2. Type your password
3. Now choose a language in GDM menu: Options Select language, for example
in this case English USA
4. There pops up a dialog which asks you if GDM LOGIN screen shall be restarted
with new language setting.
5. Click on No because I want to keep german for my GDM LOGIN screen.
6. Then there pops up another dialog which asks you if you want to make the new
language setting the default for your GNOME SESSION
7. Click on Make default because I want to have my GNOME SESSION in english
8. Log out of your Gnome session
9. GDM LOGIN screen still has german as language what's correct
10. Now login to your Gnome session with same user from step 1

Results:

After logging in Gnome again, german is the language for the GNOME
SESSION which is WRONG, because I want to have ghe GNOME SESSION in
english!

Exptected behavior:

It must be possible to have GDM LOGIN screen for example in german but
your GNOME SESSIONS in english for example!

I'd say he means the session since he mentions that it's GNOME which
isn't displaying in English.

Thank you for your bug. Your description is not really clear. Are you
trying to change the locale for the user session or the login dialog?

  Choosing Make Default sticks till you don't shutdown. You can logout

What doesn't appear in the language you selected after rebooting, only
the login screen or everything?

[Bug 124536] Re: GDM login doesn't respect/stick the chosen locale

2007-07-07 Thread Shirish Agarwal
everything which is translated. Just to make sure I don't take you guys
down the wrong road. I installed ubuntu 7.10 then xubuntu 7.10 on top
of it. AFAIK Both use GDM for login, the only difference is the login
screen (graphical wise) otherwise its the same thing. Even doing

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps -A | grep gdm
 4677 ?00:00:00 gdm
 4678 ?00:00:00 gdm

so its definitely gdm which I am using. This is explicity to do with
using English language (making it System default) , it doesn't stick.
After rebooting, the whole login screen , everything which has been
translated into hindi is using hindi. If I use GNOME then large parts of
it are translated and hence it shows hindi. Doing a quick locale shows
me :-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ locale
LANG=hi_IN.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_TIME=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_NAME=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=hi_IN.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

If I want to change to English, at each reboot I have (emphasis on have)
to say I want to use English not hindi . Making it System default
doesn't do anything.

GDM package version is 2.19.3-0ubuntu on gutsy gibbon 7.10 tribe 2.
Please lemme know if any more info. is needed.
