Can you try either prboom or chocolate-doom with the '-nofullscreen' command-line option? My hunch is the problem is related to trying to change the display resolution whilst entering fullscreen mode. It's likely actually an SDL1 bug. This second report from apport-collect is from a different machine running the 4.12 stock Ubuntu kernel and official Nvidia drivers, with the Nvidia configuration set to enable Wayland.
