I have the exact same problem on my IdeaPad 520s with an Geforce MX 940. It happens everytime when I have an active Nvidia card (prime-select nvidia). Then fully updated Absolutely nothing else done.. Note: this occurred both before & after the gdm3 update. What happens: Attempting to restart from either the gui or in terminal leads to a black screen with blinking cursor. Waiting does nothing. Going to tty1 shows wall of text, cursor just blinks there also. However if I go to tty7 then the shutdown immediately proceeds & finishes.
