[Bug 1727603] Re: gnome-shell crashed with signal 5 in __GI___libc_free() from g_free() from g_key_file_parse_key_value_pair()

2017-11-23 Thread Eric Morgan
FYI I cannot repeat this with the above re-creation instructions but
gnome-shell is reseting VERY frequently (2 - 3 times per hour) with the
same error. I'm not exactly sure what triggers it but it crashed while I
was typing in this text field to submit this bug.

2017-10-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, but that bug seems to be less conclusive for some reason. Maybe
repeat a couple of times? Or maybe the MALLOC_CHECK_ is now hitting a
much earlier issue not related to this one.

Hi Daniel,

Here is the new bug report.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1727902

After changing the /etc/environment, the crash didn't freeze the whole
computer instead it froze the desktop.

[Bug 1727603] Re: gnome-shell crashed with signal 5 in __GI___libc_free() from g_free() from g_key_file_parse_key_value_pair()

2017-10-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

A crash inside free() like that where the calling logic appears to be
correct, is most likely due to heap corruption that occurred earlier
(not visible in the stack traces).

To find the source of the corruption you will need to add these to your
/etc/environment first:

G_SLICE=always-malloc
MALLOC_CHECK_=3

Then reproduce the crash and upload a new crash file using 'ubuntu-bug'.
It should/may crash slightly earlier now, in a different place which is
the root cause of the problem.
