I am now also experiencing the same bug as Effenberg's last comment above: Now when I send attached files with known extensions, like doc, pdf, jpg, etc other people receive these files as .dat, .txt, depending on the client or webmail service they use. I now use Evolution 2.22.2-0Ubuntu1. I also have Crossover Office 6.1.0 installed and ran the utility scripts that updates the mime type associations. I have no problems with associations elsewhere such as Nautilus. But it is impossible to extract .doc attachments from emails sent by me. Hey hggdh, there's a new bug here after latest updates to Hardy. Now when I send attached files with known extensions, like doc, pdf, jpg, etc other people receive these files as .dat, .txt, depending on the client or webmail service they use. Hi hggdh, I agree with you. If we create (or receive) a new file, for example, with a new mime-type and an unknown extension, we should be able to mail it anyway. I think any patch should be in the sense of not crashing if mime-type is not recognized. One other thing I would like to understand was how mime-types got misconfigured on my system anyway... I found out ~/.mime.types was irrelevant. Removing and fixing this file did not solved the issue. It is created by CrossOver Office but CXOffice work without it anyway. Not having this file makes no difference as far as I can see. And /etc/mime- types and /usr/share/mime.cache need root privileges to be changed. /etc/mime.types is used only by CUPS (printing subsystem on Linux). Evo, Nautilus, etc, use pretty much what is under /usr/share/mime -- the cache file there is created/updated by the package install (shared-mime- info), or by specific updates. One option is somehow an update failed. You can try to pinpoint it by looking at the /var/log/apt/* and /var/log/dpkg* log files. Looking on mine I can see an update on shared-mime-info done on Feb 18, for example. mchra is going to commit the patch after the current freeze, so Evo will survive if an unknown mime type is used. With this patch, what would happen is you will get a mime type of unknown/whatever (huh, not real names), but would still succeed on the attach. Hggdh, mcrha helped me again today, we found out that gnomevfs-info 123.xls was responding with an empty mime-type for some reason. We came up with a fix which I tested in 8 machines here and it fixed the problem in all of them: 1)mv ~/.mime.types ~/.mime.types.bkp 2)sudo mv /etc/mime.types /etc/mime.types.bkp 3)sudo mv /usr/share/mime.cache /usr/share/mime.cache.bkp 4)Reboot 5)All icons will be messed up. Right click any .xls file, select Open with another application, Select OpenOffice Calc. Do the same with .doc and .ppt file. 6)Reboot. All icons still messed up. sudo /usr/bin/update-mime-database /usr/share/mime 7)Reboot. Fixed! All MS-Office files have correct mime types according to gnomevfs-info and can be attached to evo. I have no idea why mime types were misconfigured, I am sure it probably is not a good idea to remove mime.types from $home and /etc, also I am sure I should have repeated Step 5 for many other extensions... Upstream has not been able to reproduce it, and would like to know if you would be willing to participate in a debug session (perhaps with upstream and/or myself either piloting the gdb session, or asking you to type commands). Another possible option is to build a test Evo distribution, with some more debug code, for you to install try. Could you please run Evo under GDB again and, when you hit the error, do: 1. thread apply all bt full # full BT, all threads 2. gcore evo.dump # save a core dump file Then please attach the ouput of (1), the 'evo.dump' file generated by (2), and the contents of ~/.xsession-errors. *NOTE* *before* uploading the memory dump, please make sure this bug is marked PRIVATE. hggdh, did the last Backtrace file I sent here helped you see the problem? Do you need any other information? Although we are missing the beginning of the bt, I think all critical function calls are in there. I see the reason for the SIGSEGV; I just do not see (yet) how this could have happened. It does not seem to be related to localisation, so far. I will try to trap the execution at this point in time on my Evo, and find out what *should* be there. But, so far, I think we are good to go. Unfortunately we are still missing some debug packages. from the offending thread, I can see we do not have resolution to the Evo* libraries, specifically the E-D-S-related ones. Please install either e-d-s .dbg, or *all* individual debug libraries (libcamel, libebook, libecal, libedata*, etc). Also, interestingly, libg* symbols did not get resolved on the backtrace. I do not know why, since I can see the affected debug libraries being loaded. Ah well. I think I can live without the libg* symbols, at least for now, but we *do* need the evolution libraries completely resolved. The bt full will, then, allow me to follow the code. Hi hggdh, thank you for your patience. I have installed Evolution Data Server .dbg with Synaptic and redone the steps to get the Backtrace. Hope it helps more this time. What I am seeing in the Backtrace file that caught my attention is this: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. Thank you for your reply hggdh. I already had libglib2.0-0-dbg but not evolution.dbg installed when I posted the gdb-backtrace.txt attached in my original post. evolution.dbg is installed now. I also was already using 2.21.92. I have used evolution --force-shutdown and have attached the output of a new gdb-backtrace using thread apply all bt as requested. Hope it helps.
