[Bug 401934] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last()
The entry for gedit is not actually the gedit package in Ubuntu, but rather the upstream entry for this issue in gedit. We don't have control about that status. Upstream, however, did mark this bug as fixed. Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with Launchpad, making it unable to read the upstream status, which the small warning triangle next to the upstream bug number shows. In cases like that Launchpad leaves the statuses at New. -- gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

** Description changed: Binary package hint: gedit Trying to open a python script. It worked one time but crashes on any subsequent attempt. + + The crash happens *consistently , mainly* for files which are several lines of text and have been edited previously by the user profile. + The crash seems to occur when gedit is trying to place the cursor and change focus to the same location of the last edit by the user. + [If the same file is opened in a different user account, which has not edited the file, crash does not occur . Since the user has not edited the file and cursor is placed in the first line now] + + Workaround 1: + 1 - Open a file which has *not* been edited previously. [or an empty file] + 2 - now open the file which causes the crash.[the file opens in a new tab] no crashes will be noticed now. + + Workaround 2: + + 1 - Before closing the file you are editing , reposition the cursor in the first line and then close the file. + 2 - Now opening the file later will not cause the crash + ProblemType: Crash Architecture: i386 CrashCounter: 1 Date: Mon Jul 20 23:07:08 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gedit NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: gedit 2.27.2-1ubuntu1 ProcCmdline: gedit movemembers.py ProcEnviron: SHELL=/bin/bash PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-3.19-generic SegvAnalysis: Segfault happened at: 0x8d4542 IA__g_list_last+18: mov0x4(%eax),%edx PC (0x008d4542) ok source 0x4(%eax) (0xaaae) not located in a known VMA region (needed readable region)! destination %edx ok SegvReason: reading unknown VMA Signal: 11 SourcePackage: gedit StacktraceTop: IA__g_list_last (list=0x) gdk_window_process_updates () ?? [Bug 401934] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last()
The problem is that gedit remembers the cursor position for each file *by name*. If you rename the file to something else then gedit treats it as a new file and sets the cursor position to a safe position, If you rename it back and try to load it, gedit tries to use the cursor position saved for that name and inits itself with a cursor position that causes it to crash. A little further information: It seems this has something to do with restoring the state of the document, and scrolling the document to the last location. This should be able to be reproduced by anyone by disabling line wrapping in gedit, entering a few very long lines, then exiting/saving while the current cursor location is near the end of one of these very long lines (horizontal scroll position is far right), then launching this document again via it's association with gedit. -- gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 401934] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last()
Thanks for your bug report. Please try to obtain a backtrace http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and attach the file to the bug report. Are you using a plugin could you test to disable it and try to reproduce the bug again? May you tell us a few easy steps in order to reproduce it or it just crash sometimes while opening? [Bug 401934] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last()
Pedro, what Is wrong with the Traces that apport attached automatically? They include debugging symbols and should be enough for a quick glance. (Not the retracer ones, they are obviously broken) Anyway, attaching new backtrace. It happens only with this one script, attaching it to this report. I temporarily disabled all plugins, still the same crash. I tried moving the script to another hard disk to exclude a bad disk, still the same. ** Attachment added: gedit-backtrace.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29356927/gedit-backtrace.txt -- gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 401934] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last()
Same here. I attempted to run after a fresh boot with the same crash. code: quagm...@quagmire-desktop:~$ sudo gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa [sudo] password for quagmire: Segmentation fault (core dumped) quagm...@quagmire-desktop:~$ /code However, it doesn't crash all the time. If I open Text Editor from the Applications - Accessories menu, it works fine. If I open a text file on my desktop, it also works fine. If I copy default.pa from /etc/pulse to Desktop, it still does not open from the desktop. However, if I rename the file from default.pa to simply default (on the desktop), it opens fine. If I rename it back to default.pa, it will again crash. -- gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_list_last() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
