until we get a true Fix for this, try going to the visual effects tab (right click on desktop, change desktop background, select the Visual Effects tab, and select the radio button for None So far, this allows me to access the desktop via Vinagre with no real issues... if ANY of the desktop effects are enabled, connection is no longer workable... I have had this issue when connecting from a mac to various ubuntu machines. I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 got all the updates. Remote Desktop worked fine... Then.. I took a few small steps to set up netatalk for file sharing with my mac, and started having this issue. I tried to undo the things i did in netatalk config, to no avail. I just disabled the proprietary driver, and it seems to work, suggest that Compiz could be part of the issue... I enabled the proprietary driver, and as long as the appearance settings are set to Visual effects = none then it will refresh... as soon as Compiz is involved on the remote desktop, then the screens will no longer update...
