Also, is your system configured for proxy? Please check System/Preferences/Network Proxy. The attached screen-shot confirms the settings are the same in each app for the same account (Empathy on the left, Pidgin on the right). Setting a proxy on my machine makes no difference, but bear in mind that even if I choose Direct internet connection, my corporate network will route me through a proxy transparently anyway.
