Solved. After a day's effort searching for the cause I found it. In my desperate attempts to get the detailed thunar view working I tried the xubuntu-dev ppa. Unfortunately, it updated more files than I realised, and this was compounded by then adding xubuntu's proposed updates. I mentioned that after the proposed updates thunar was working but slower than usual. Renaming .gnome2 seems to have fixed it; the newly generated .gnome2 directory has returned the speed that was there. Still having two weird issues since the updates: - unable to automount usb flash drives or dvd data discs - when my trash is full and I go to delete it, I get some message that a file cannot be deleted. It does delete though I don't suppose anyone can suggest the names of any other config directories to try and rename so they get recreated. Hello Have you tried to remove .config/xfce4 and .config/xfce4-session directories and logout/login or restart? Or go to settings/xfce4 settings manager/removable drives and media/storage checking that the first 2 top boxes are checked? I don't have such issues after 2 upgrades using different methods. Thanks Antonio. I tried deleting .config/xfce4 but it didn't correct the problem. Curiously, I did not have a .config/xfce-session directory. Should I? The first three boxes are ticked in the storage window. I have tried unticking and reticking but it seems to make no difference. I am almost certain the problems are related to a configuration file that is holding things up, much as the speed returned when I renamed the .gnome2 directory. I'll sit tight and hope an update restores it but I am mostly happy that the detailed view is working again and I have learned to live with occasional strange things in linux :) Thanks for your help. I enabled the propose repo and installed about 30mb of updates. Detailed view is working correctly for me now though I notice one of the updates has slowed thunar and file operations considerably. Even deleting a small text file feels sluggish now. Thankfully, because pcmanfm is dangerously unstable, gave me the creeps after I saw the consequences of some file copies and arguments passed on directories with spaces...I prefer the terminal... For those eager to get rid of the annoying bug without going through the terminal, catching up with Lionel's work: go to system software sources other software add ppa:xubuntu-dev/ppa and then: ppa:mrpouit/ppa and close. I tried the PPA route without reading the rest of the post. Now, it did fixed the original Thunar selection problem but it left my XFCE deskotp in a less than desirable state. Yes the version that is included in the xubuntu repositories still has the same bug, you need to compile a new version from source. http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/ I managed to fix this problem by getting a copy of the source via git at the project URL. I'm using version 0.9.5 and it does not have the problem. Same problem here. As someone has already stated, I too believe that this bug is severe. Since I use only the detailed view (and did an upgrade from Xubuntu 9.10) I thought that I had to reinstall Xubuntu. Luckily one last search pointed me to this bug. Actually, I went back and took more notice and the bug is as others described - detailed view only. Which happens to be the only view I ever used. I can live with compact view for now and I have installed pcman and gnome commander as backups but I really hope this is sorted. I have the same problem but it only happens if you double-click a folder. If you double click, then the selecting stops working. If you right click the folder and choose 'open' it still works fine. This is a must-fix, I have to say that pcmanfm has the same behavior, either in the standard or nohal flavours in my system, libfm is not installed in my implementation, there is no fix for this in xubuntu lucid amd64. For me, it seems to not matter what view the pane is in - detailed, icons, or compact. This is driving me crazy! I was away for four days and had no internet and unfortunately chose that time to do a clean install of Xubuntu Lucid. When Thunar stopped working I tried everything, even clean installing another three times (one was for a sound bug that gave me no sound). For me, it seems to not matter what view the pane is in - detailed, icons, or compact. I can do one operation then it is as though the pane is empty. I cannot select anything or move within directories though interestingly the breadcrumb navigation and shortcuts in the tree still work. Even the mouse wheel lets me scroll the pane contents - I just can't left or right click anything. I tried changing all my permissions on my folders and files to no avail. I tried thunar as sudo and that actually seemed to work properly until that too stopped. I tried deleting the ~/.config/thunar config folder. No effect, though if I do that AND reboot I am able to do maybe five operations before it stops responding. And on some reboots I am able to use left and right click for a few operations having done nothing at all. FYI: the file manager in Lubuntu (pcmanfm 0.9.4) no longer exhibits the detailed view select bug. It's serving as a replacement for Thunar for me at the moment. FYI - noticed that pcmanfm 0.5.2 (which appears to be the default with synaptic under Xubuntu 10.04 RC) exhibits exactly the same behavior as Thunar (once you enter a subdirectory, clicking on folders files etc., no longer works). Again, it's only with the detailed list view. If my memory serves me correctly this bug did not begin until the upgrade to Xubuntu 10.04 (from an earlier xubuntu). Until I got irritated enough to report it, and found this bug report (and the associated workaround), I had simply given up working on this computer. It was a serious problem for me. I was bringing my laptop to work instead. This was one of several bugs that made Xubuntu 10.04 unusable. (The other bugs are: constant firefox crashes, and frozen or slow response from the evince pdf viewer. Sorry. I digress. I'll report these elsewhere.) I've also been using regular ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) for a week, without any problems. If my impression means anything, I would say xubuntu 10.04 is definitely not ready for release. this was not fixed! I just upgraded my desktop from Karmic to Lucid, and this bug made my thunar unusable :( Left click does not work at all on any selected item when this happens. Right click works, but the popup menu is for the parent folder, not for a specific selected file. The closest thing I've seen to a real fix was posted by someone in the XFCE bug report forum http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=2940. Patching exo-tree-view.c in the Ubuntu exo-0.3.106 (for Lucid) source at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/exo seems to work without ill effect as far as I can tell. After compiling I just replaced the /usr/lib/libexo-0.3.so.0.5.0 with the patched version, and linked /usr/lib/libexo-0.3.so.0 to it (some versions may require a /usr/lib/libexo-0.3.so link too). Also it appears that the recompiled file expects the /usr/lib/libexo-0.3.0/ folder to be /usr/local/libexec/, so a link to the directory needs to be created there if the source isn't further edited. Obviously, to anyone reading, I take no responsibility for any damage this might cause, TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK, and keep backups of any system files you substitute! On a side-note, I'm with those who consider this bug critical. Well at least critical to Xubuntu or any XFCE based distro. The real test of a good file manager is efficiency, any gains in Thunar's lightness are immediately lost when a user has to resort to awkward workarounds (excluding hacks) to make very basic functionality usable. I dare say many Thunar/potential users will look for alternative file managers, especially as there doesn't seem to be any clarity when or whether this bug will be fixed. I just assumed that Thunar was broken. I thought view as icons was the default, or else the last view used will be the view you get when you start thunar. But regardless, I still use view as detailed list allot. It does work, but it's a hassle that I need to switch to view as icons or view as compact list to browse through the directories. All you need to do to use view as detailed list is switch view and switch it back to view as detailed list (Ctrl+1 ,Ctrl+2) and it will work until you browse to another directory. That said, I think this will bug almost every xubuntu user and it is NOT self evident that you can bypass it by switching views. It's NOT URGENT, BUT CRITICAL that this is solved before release. I really don't appreciate this bug being labeled as Importance: Medium.
