I noticed the same described behaviour with my 8 character password: When my session starts (automatic login) gnome-keyring asks me to enter a password to unlock network-manager WEP key. After having inserted my password, if i confirm it hitting the ENTER button GDM and (and X) crashes and I have to login again. I noticed that this happens only the first time I login after a normal startup process. After the first crash and the second login, nothing strange happens anymore. I also noticed that if I don't hit the ENTER button (and i use the ok button clicking with the mouse) GDM doesn't crash immediatly but it waits until the key ENTER is pressed. (I opened the chromium web browser, i typed an URL address and i hit ENTER to confirm... and GDM crashed). This crash always happens when unlocking my keychain (seahorse) the first time so this is starting to look like a GDK/GTK issue with the password widget. I have the same bahvior. Both with nVidia and ATI cards. I do not think it is related to a specific driver. I also get this crash from the gdm login as well as from the login to unlock screen after screen saver. I have discovered it only happens with passwords longer that 8 characters. Trying passwords of 9 and 10 in length, it consistently fails exactly when I hit the 9th character. Passwords of eight characters do not cause the behavior. here are my specs. $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available.
