Thanks for responding, Sebastien!
I booted up in XP Professional, and had sound (the Windows log-on sound, and
the music player).
I rebooted in Ubuntu, and had no sound (Rhythmbox, also a film clip in Yahoo
news that should have had sound accompanying the picture).
So the problem seems to be with Ubuntu.
