I'm seeing the same problem with NVIDIA hardware and NVIDIA drivers. Even in Classic No Effects mode Metacity is causing significant performance problems with OpenGL applications. This appears to be fixed for me when using the current version of Metacity (2.34). I see a drop in framerates with games run in wine and of about 50%, and glxgears reports less than 1000 fps compared to 9000 fps in Maverick. (glxgears under compiz in Natty reports an excellent framerate of around 3500, but the gears actually only appear to turn once or twice a second.)
