Same problem here confirmed Ubuntu 10.04 - 1 machine, Ubuntu 12.04 , 2 machines. none can browse if samba even installed locally or remote. Same problem here on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm on a large network, but I can only access a few hosts over SMB with Nautilus. On most hosts I get this Failed to retrieve share list from server error. The smbclient -L host command works for every host. As far as I can tell the problem occurs only for specific SMB host OS'es. Both Windows 2008 hosts I tried were unaccessible through Nautilus, while the Linux host I tried (smbd 3.X) could succesfully be accessed. From what I could gather, there are more people affected than that. I found many posts. Like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1815360 for instance. And the solution provided here does not work.
