2008-11-05 Thread robert whetsel
cont. from above^

Is this reproducible? yes, I reproduced this four times before I
finished these two postings.

* Does this happen with screensavers other than Molecule, such as braid
or xrayswarm? yes

+ add to this it happened when I was scrolling up/down through the
screen saver choices on about the 5th or 6th screensaver the machine
locked.

* When this happens, can you hit Ctrl+Alt+F2? Does the system change to
the black terminal screen with a login? No, Ctrl+Alt+F2,
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, etc... does nothing, the keyboard is locked.

Well, as the comments here show, some people were relying on this
feature. This should be out of discussion now.

> that might be wrong but should be discussed on
> bugzilla.gnome.org rather than here, intrepid ships now the current
> version which works mostly correctly and the way to go is to get the bug

With all due respect, I'm really surprised with this answer. Does this
imply that every time an upstream project delivers a new version with
regressions, Ubuntu will ship it just because it is the new upstream
version, no matter what damage it may cause? Does it imply that if
Ubuntu, for whatever reason, ships upstream code with a regression,
Ubuntu users will be directed to complain upstream as their only
resource?

I don't think this reflects Ubuntu's objectives (but please correct me
if I'm wrong.) As far as I can tell, Ubuntu has generally done a very
good job of selecting appropriate versions of upstream software: stable
and functional enough for most people, yet current. And most users now
rely on upgrades not containing serious regressions. So it can be argued
that the Ubuntu Desktop Team made the wrong decision when they let this
software in, because in fact, the problem was very well known to them
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2008-September/026588.html look
under "Release Status").

Now, my intention here is not to point fingers, but to ask for
reasonable damage control. As a minimum, I would expect this problem to
be acknowledged by the desktop team, and clearly reported in the Release
Notes, so that users can decide if they want to update. Of course, it
would also be good to try to fix gnome-session at least to the point of
not putting user data under risk (see my comment above in this bug
report) but I don't know if anyone can commit any resources to that.

Finally, regarding us complaining upstream, I'm not sure a lot of
disgruntled users commenting in GNOME Bugzilla will be of help. As far
as I can tell, this is not just a bug. What's going on here is that the
desired functionality is simply not implemented, or very immature in the
new gnome-session. So, it cannot be said that it "works mostly
correctly", because, in reality, it is able to start a session properly,
but far from being able to stop or restart it properly, which means it
currently does 30 to 50% of the intended functionality. This being the
actual state of affairs, I think we'll be very lucky if this is ready
for Jaunty.

Of course, GNOME should have also reported this clearly in their release
notes. They should also tell us what their policy regarding regressions
is, because they seem to be very picky regarding obscure ABI
regressions, but don't seem to mind large, user-visible regressions that
potentially put user data under risk of destruction. But this is
something we should try to bring to GNOME, and certainly not through
bugzilla.

Sorry for the long rant, but the way this problem has been
systematically understated worries me deeply, and detracts from the high
quality level we are already used to expect from Ubuntu.

[Bug 294146] [NEW] Search folders updates too fast

2008-11-05 Thread Alfrenovsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In ubuntu 8.10
Evolution 2.24.1-0ubuntu2

The search folders changes inmediatly when some of the search condition changes.
This is specially anoying with the "New mails" folder. A search folder that I
use to have all the converstations with unreaded messages.
When I stand over a message the message turns to Readed after few seconds,
thats fine, but when the readed state changes, the message dissapears from the
"New mails" list, and the next message is highlighted and marked as read in few
seconds, dissapeared, etc.
This just turns the "New mails" search folder unusable.

[Bug 294150] Re: rhythmbox crashes when starting radiostation when crossfading active

2008-11-05 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I tried to reproduce this bug, but I couldn't, it worked fine for me.

* Is this easily reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

The decision has been made to use the new upstream version during the
cycle because other desktop component started using the new gnome-
session dbus api and gnome-session needed to be upgrade to upgrade
those. The issue have been discussion with people working on the
upstream rewrite and were on the list of things to work on for GNOME
2.24. The changes have slowed down when one of the people working on the
new code changed job and had been busy with other things. Now the ubuntu
team doesn't have extra ressources to put on writting this upstream code
and downgrading is not really an option so the bug is basically blocker
on something to step up and do the work there or in the GNOME community

Yes, that's very much the same bug.

And upstream seems to have an actual fix, rather than just another
workaround.

@Holger: I am not sure how very long filenames will behave; I *know*
spaces will still be a problem (only text after last space will be shown

The space issue -- most probably -- will *not* be corrected -- this
seems an issue with Outlook indeed, per upstream.

I personally cannot test it since I do not have Outlook (or access to
such).

[Bug 294108] [NEW] Rhythmbox segfaults during normal use

2008-11-05 Thread Keith Hughitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

System:

Ubuntu 8.10 2.6.27-7-generic

Rhythmbox crashes (due to segfault) at seemingly random times during
usage. I initially suspected it was related to working with an iPod
since it crashed several times when trying to fetch and transfer
podcasts, but have since had it crash when no in use after loading, when
not connected to an iPod.

I tried running in debug mode to get more useful information, but was
not able to come up with much:

[Bug 294166] [NEW] nautilus thinks HDs mounted under /media are Picture CDs

2008-11-05 Thread Sam Snow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.10
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expected: nautilus should show the contents of a hard drive as,
well, contents of a hard drive.

What happened:
When I open nautilus to look at the contents of --
a) my usb-connected Western Digital Passport HD (/dev/sdc1, ext3)
b) my internal modular bay HD (/dev/sdb1, ext3)
-- the right-hand pane of nautilus shows a banner which states --
"These files are on a Picture CD."
I have used the Media tab of nautilus preferences to "Do nothing" for all media
types, and I have checked the "Never prompt or start programs on media
insertion" checkbox.

IIRC, I saw this when I first installed Ubuntu 8.04, but it went away
when I removed F-Spot -- but I might be wrong about that. Anyway, I
wasn't plagued by the problem in 8.04.

[Bug 293953] [NEW] gnome-system-log hangs then crashes with large messages file

2008-11-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

My messages file grew to 940MB or so due to a wireless LAN module bug
that was causing continuous kernel panics and the messages.0 file was 2
GB.

Then whenever I ran gnome-system-log, it then no longer worked: instead,
it unexpectedly hung on startup, turned grey, and eventually died (this
even after a fresh reboot).

I eventually stopped it from crashing by moving all the messages* files
into another folder - but after I moved them back into /var/log, gnome-
system-log no longer hangs or crashes when I run, so I can't reproduce
the problem now. I did delete some other large files such as kern.log
and syslog, so maybe these files were also relevant to the crash.

I have seen gnome-system-log hang several times like this over the last
few weeks: previously it seemed to sort itself out (eventually).

I've attached an strace of gnome-system-log from when it hung (I force-
closed it in this case rather than waiting until it crashed).
