[Bug 1055766] Re: grep -R doesn't automatically search amazon

2012-11-09 Thread Brayden Hull
I was thinking of making a new report for this but I feel it is somewhat
related.

I just had a brain wave and felt that another way of supporting
Canonical would be to give product suggestions whilst the user is idle
at the terminal for a certain period of time. Clearly if someone is idle
they're just bored and the helpful suggestions provided by Canonical
would aid them in freeing themselves from bored despair.

I've had a look at the Amazon RSS API and have found that this would be
rather easy to implement.

Periodically bash should call this Python script that I've made (and
will attach) which would randomly select out of 20 suggestions. It'll
provide a title and URL so the user can buy. I'd love to implement a
mechanism where it can be purchased by just clicking on the URL however
it is not possible to implement via RSS.

All Canonical needs to do is substitute the current example user ID with
their own. Feedparser is not included in Ubuntu by default but is part
of the repo with the package name: python-feedparser - Universal Feed
Parser for Python for 2.7 and python3-feedparser - Universal Feed
Parser for Python for 3.2

** Attachment added: Python script to parse Amazon RSS and provide helpful
suggestions

2012-11-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
OK, I just noticed that it's been pushed to dev releases only.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Not such a good move in my opinion - it prevents regular users from
having a user-friendly way of reporting bugs, without knowing that
System Settings is actually called gnome-control-center. Help -
report problem was really a nice way of doing it.

[Bug 1076990] [NEW] Nautilus hanging

2012-11-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, I started experience this happening.
It sometimes happens that Nautilus hangs. It's eating 100% of my CPU,
the window is darkened, I can't do anything on the desktop etc.

top output:

PIDUSER PR NI VIRTRES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
9721 kermit20 0 1390m 129m 19m R 98,4 1,6 5:33.28
nautilus

So far I can't tie this to anything specific. My other programs work
normally with files during that time. Pkilling nautilus doesn't really
help. After some time it can get ok once again, while sometimes I have
to reboot.

[Bug 1076993] [NEW] evolution doesn't display amount of read/unread e-mails

2012-11-09 Thread Martin Bitter
Public bug reported:

Formerly versions of evolution showed at the top of the folder list the
amount of read and unread e-mails in the selected folder.

This is gone with evolution 3.2.3 Kubuntu 12.04 because the background
and the used font have the same color. (see screen shot)

Following this https://bugzilla.gnome.org/671437 this is related to
mistreated alpha-chanel.

Please follow the suggested solution and upgrade libgtk-3-0 package to
3.4.4 or later.

[Bug 884041] Re: Screen brightness not adjusted when switching from AC to battery

2012-11-09 Thread Scott Sweeny
Judging by upstream design documents[1], this feature has been changed
by the GNOME folks to only dim the screen when idle on battery power.
The tickbox for Dim screen to save power in the Brightness and Lock
capplet in Gnome Control Center toggles the idle-dim-battery GSettings
key, and on battery power your screen should dim after (by default) 30
seconds of idle time.

I'm going to talk with upstream about clarifying the tickbox label, but
otherwise I don't think this feature will be coming back as it was.

[Bug 884041] Re: Screen brightness not adjusted when switching from AC to battery

2012-11-09 Thread Danny Wood
What is irritating about this is the backlight on laptops is usually the
highest power item.

So on battery I want it to always be low power to maximise the battery
life, I don't want it to continuously go bright when I touch my laptop
as this consumes excess battery.

As I can't have that my display is always dim at the moment, so even on
AC I am having a dim display and not utilising the screens ability.

It makes sense to have two power modes, on battery, and on AC. It makes
absolutely no sense to use virtually the same settings on both. The
GNOME guys are consistently going to far to reduce configuration.

[Bug 1076880] Re: network speed incorrectly reported in System Monitor using VPN

2012-11-09 Thread candtalan
Hi Robert
The axis labels seem appropriate to the speed value apparently seen by system
monitor. It is th eapparent speed value seen by system monitor which is too
large. To keep th einitial report simple, I did not mention the similar
apparent inaccuracy in system monitor indication of upload speed also, in fact
it was the upload speed being (incorrectly far too large that brought my
attention to this - I am using VPN for the first time and running (Ubuntu,
floss) torrents in Transmission. With VPN the upload speed is shown as say, 90
(ish) but I have set the global up speed to be limited to 45. It was my
concern that I had either lost control of the upload speed, or thatsomehow VPN
was throwing a very fast upload capability. My ISP doe not traffic shape at
all, and also I could not can not see why a VPN should cause a large increase
in what should be a controlled speed of upload. My expected max upload speed
should be just over 100, say 120 (ISP says currently - Bandwidth (Up/Down)
[kbps/kbps]:1.072 / 7.407)

My conclusion fwiw is that Transmission seems to report correct (upload
) speeds (set to say 50) when VPN is used, but System Monitor seems to
give incorrectly high indications, and also not steady values either.

If more screen shots or even if a live view somehow could help let me
know please?

[Bug 1065523] Re: Doesn't read the user ssh config

2012-11-09 Thread Antonio
I have the same problem in Ubuntu 12.10. I've set up a proxy in my .ssh/config
file, it works on the command line but is ignored if I try to use it in
nautilus.
If I'm not mistaken nautilus uses gvfs as a backend to mount remote filesystem,
dunno if gvfs is supposed to read the ssh configuration file at all so this
would turn the bug into a feature request.
As a workaround I'm using sshfs to mount the remote filesystem, looks like it
reads the .ssh/config file correctly, it can be found in the repository.

[Bug 1077117] [NEW] Cannot send a file from Empathy to Empathy

Public bug reported:

Cannot send a file from Empathy 3.4.2.3 running on Ubuntu 12.04 to
another user running Ubuntu 10.04 and Empathy.

Can receive though the other way around!

I open 'ContactSend File' and then a window pops up so I can select a
file to send. I select a file and hit the Send button. Nothing ever
happens after that. No error, no request to recieve on the intended
recipient's machine. I started Empathy via command line and still no

to solve it.

Your approach related to the prompt / secondary text seems to be fine.

In addition, more information related to other users logged before halt or
reboot could be useful. You can see some examples at comments #20 and #22. By
the way, I'm not so sure if this behavior is about policykit or lightdm...

I have just compared with KNemo, and to a visual approximate assessment,
one could say that (under VPN conditions) the System Monitor is
indicating about a factor of 2 overspeed. A bit broad brush, an d need
to use squinty eyes of course. Any reason in System Monitor algorithms
or code for a x2 to be relvant when VPN is used?

** Attachment added: Using VPN, KNemo compared with System Monitor (horiz set
to same rate)

[Bug 243751] Re: closing the lid should suspend if and only if no external video is connected

2012-11-09 Thread Dac Chartrand
New use case that affects me pretty much every other day.

Dan is working at the office with his laptop and an external monitor
plugged in. Dan is in a rush to get home. Dan closes the lid, unlplugs
his monitor, and stuffs the laptop in his napsack. A few hours later he
opens his bag only to find an overheated laptop still running. Sweat
forms on his brow because he now worries sectors on his hard drive are
corrupted.

[Bug 1038573] Re: Unreadable messages displayed during Lucid - Precise upgrade

2012-11-09 Thread Graeme C. Payne
TodayI performed an in-place update from 10.04 to 12.04. During the
course of the install i noted the appearance of several dialogs
(presumably errors) as described by the original report. I am still
unsure about what to do in a lot of cases, so I clicked on the default
(highlighted) button to continue. (I am new with Linux, but my overall
computer experience goes back to the dark ages of TRS-DOS, CP/M, and
integer BASIC on a teletype machine.)

AFTER this installation fully completed I noticed that the issue also
affect a number of text-type items. I observed the effect (characters
replaced by empty rectangles) in text email messages in Evolution, and
in text files on the desktop. I had to try a number of workarounds. the
results are illustrated in the attachments.

Screenshot-01-application: Text email message as viewed in Evolution, gedit
and writer. (It is readable only in writer.)
Screenshot-02-application: Another text email bessage as viewed in Evolution
and writer.
Screenshot-03-application: A text (html) file stored on the desktop as viewed
there, in gedit, and with notebook in wine. (It is only readable in notebook.)

This is my first time reporting in this system, so any helpful feedback
will be appreciated.

** Attachment added: Text email in evolution - note that the body is trashed
but the headers are fine

Also where is the custom icon you are using located? Is it on a

[Bug 1050358] Re: emesene crashed with SIGSEGV in tupledealloc.24592()

2012-11-09 Thread Stephen Cradock
I reported a related crash in bug#1069163. Checking today I find the
same behavior reported there; no mention of tupledealloc in the
stacktrace.

What is new is a stacktrace reported when I start emesene from a
terminal, which I didn't see before it crashed originally. Now it says:

~$ emesene
Exception in thread Thread-3:

Hope that helps, if only to establish that the two reports are or are not
related!

[Bug 1077289] [NEW] Lubuntu 12.04 missing libpam-gnome-keyring

2012-11-09 Thread Barry Chow
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Lubuntu 12.04 is missing the gnome keyring pam module libpam-gnome-
keyring as part of its default install. This makes it impossible to link
the default keyring to the login keyring, thus requiring users to
unlock the default keyring as a separate action after login. It's an
annoyance with effects disproportionate to its cause due to the fact
that users are advising each other to delete their keyring altogether as
a workaround to get rid of the annoying pop-up. Needless to say, this
creates serious security holes.
