[Bug 251081] Re: Video player is automatically opened for all and not only the active session

2008-07-23 Thread Chris Coulson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 222643 ***

Jorge - I think this is actually a Nautilus/GVFS bug, as it is Nautilus
which is launching Totem when the media is inserted. Nautilus is auto-
launching in all running sessions when media is inserted (not just the
active one). This is also a duplicate of bug 222643

[Bug 251083] Re: Gedit complains about being unable to make temp backups when saving

2008-07-24 Thread Chris Coulson
I still can't reproduce this myself. The only situation where I can get
this is if I edit a text file (which I have write permissions for) in a
directory that I don't have write permissions in. In this scenario, you
can edit the already existing file, but don't have the permissions to
create new files (for example, a new backup file)

[Bug 251730] Re: it is not installable

2008-07-25 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem (be specific - ie, if you are using apt-get from the terminal, copy and
paste the commands here),
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible -
please include all error messages from apt).
4. the version of Ubuntu that you are using (type lsb_release -rd in to a
terminal)
5. Please attach your /etc/apt/sources.list to this bug report
Thanks!

[Bug 252515] Re: [intrepid] getting segfaults now and then

2008-07-28 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. In fact, I think you need to
explicitly enable Apport in Intrepid too at the moment.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

didn't include enough information.

First of all, can you tell me whether this only happens with Rhythmbox,
or is the audio quality bad with other players (for example, Totem).
Also, can you open your volume control and make sure that no channels
are set to 100%. If they are, then please try reducing them to about
80%. Does this problem only occur with certain audio formats? If so,
which ones?

If the audio quality is poor with every application and with every

[Bug 253250] Re: Dual monitors, but always same content?

2008-07-30 Thread Chris Coulson
Using displayconfig-gtk isn't a good idea, and can lead to an even more
broken config. Even if it does give the illusion that it works, it isn't
the correct way to do it. The most likely culprit is having no virtual
screen size defined in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which is a known bug.

Please post all of the information requested by Jon anyway.

In addition, please try adding a virtual screen size as explained in
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#the_Virtual_screen. In
addition, you could try booting with the external screen already
connected to see if yuor results are different.

Thanks

2008-08-01 Thread Chris Coulson
Thats not a proper fix. You shouldn't need to use sudo to open Alacarte,
and is actually a very bad idea. You could end up making your whole menu
inaccessible by messing up the permissions in your home folder.

Please try to run alacarte normally from the terminal and post any error
messages, as requested above.

Pedro,

This PDF causes a pretty repeatable memory leak on my Hardy machine. I
get the same results every time I open it. As I scroll up and down the
pages, the memory consumption just keeps climbing and never comes down.
I've had evince running at over 1.1GB everytime I've opened this PDF,
then I just give up because my machine grinds to a halt.

Valgrind log attached from my last run. There's no libpoppler debug

[Bug 258145] Re: gnome-session-properties fails to create entries if .config/autostart is missing

2008-08-15 Thread Chris Coulson
Confirmed here.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-session
gnome-session:
  Installed: 2.23.6-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.23.6-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.23.6-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Steps to reproduce:
1. Delete ~/.config/autostart if it exists (or move it if you want to retain
its contents)
2. Open gnome-session-properties in terminal
3. Add an entry

What should happen:
1. gnome-session-properties should happily create the folder
~/.config/autostart and add a new .desktop file to it

What actually happens:
1. gnome-session-properties fails to create our new .desktop file and spits out
the following error:

** (gnome-session-properties:6053): WARNING **: Could not save
/home/chr1s/.config/autostart/firefox.desktop file

If you manually add ~/.config/autostart before you try to add the new
session entry, then it works. ~/.config/autostart isn't present on a
fresh user profile

[Bug 258145] Re: gnome-session-properties fails to create entries if .config/autostart is missing

2008-08-17 Thread Chris Coulson
James

There is a function ensure_user_autostart_dir () which creates the
autostart folder, but that is never called when you create a new session
entry. All of the work to create the .desktop file is done in
key_file_to_file (), which doesn't actually create the folder.

The attached debdiff fixes this. Tested here and it seems to work as
expected.

[Bug 258983] Re: gnome-setting-daemon segfaults on volume change

2008-08-18 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with. Please follow these instructions to have
apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the
automatic retracer.

As you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Once you have restarted,
repeat the steps necessary to recreate the crash.

[Bug 259156] Re: gdm fails to start after hardy upgrade

2008-08-19 Thread Chris Coulson
If the NVIDIA driver is not explicitly enabled in your xorg.conf, then
Xorg will not load it. That error you see is because there is no
compatible NVIDIA driver found (because it isn't loaded). Your Xorg log
file from the attempt when you ran with the NVIDIA driver shows that the
driver loading ok but can't read the EDID for your display.

Your logs also show that the ACPI daemon on your machine isn't running,
although I don't know what effect that would have or whether it is
contributing to your problem:

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or
directory)

Could you please try to run with the default xorg.conf. To recreate
this, run the following in a terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This will create the default stripped down xorg.conf without all the
modelines. Could you also attach your /var/log/syslog as well please?

[Bug 262258] Re: alacarte startup crash

2008-08-28 Thread Chris Coulson
Thanks. It seems that something has messed up your
/usr/lib/libasound.so.2 sym-link (most likely the installation of OSS4).
This explains the undefined symbols problem from the Python interpreter.
This file should link to /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0 on a default
install of libasound2. I'm going to close this bug report, because this
problem doesn't describe a bug in Ubuntu.

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-08-29 Thread Chris Coulson
Jessie - The problem isn't that the Samba daemon needs restarting. The
problem is that nautilus-share (which was introduced in to Hardy) uses a
feature of Samba called 'usershare', which allows the administrator to
control who can add shares. The administrator does this by adding users
to the 'sambashare' group. Members of this group can then add and remove
shares.

The maintainer scripts for Samba automatically add all users who are
members of group 'admin' to group 'sambashare' when Samba is installed.
However, the user won't belong to this group until they log out and back
in again (and I don't think that there is any way around that).

This wasn't a problem in Gutsy because the usershare feature wasn't
used, and users were not added to a new group when Samba was installed.
In Gutsy, only administrators could add/remove shares.

Hope that clarifies it a bit.

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-08-29 Thread Chris Coulson
Mark,

I'm not sure it is that simple with the current Samba implementation,
because it isn't a case of Samba querying whether the user belongs to
the correct group or not when a share is created. The Nautilus-share
extension (running with normal user privileges) needs write access to
/var/lib/samba/usershares in order to create a share. Only root and
members of 'sambashare' can write to this directory, and this is the
Samba implementation of controlling who can add shares. This problem is
purely down to the user not immediately gaining the privileges to write
to this folder, when they are added to the group. Unfortunately, I think
this can only be solved by logging out and back in again.

Maybe this situation could be improved with Policykit in the future.

Phoenix - Thank you for your response.

When you describe having a daemon that is privileged enough to create
shares on behalf of the user - this is basically how GNOME System Tools
/ System Tools Backends works already for handling system configuration

[Bug 263012] Re: Opening a folder link should show the path to the folder

2008-08-30 Thread Chris Coulson
I think you are confusing symbolic links with 'links' in Windows. The
two concepts are very different.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link for a brief
explanation of symbolic links in Linux. Symbolic links are meant to
operate completely transparently to the applications that are using
them, and are a feature of POSIX operating systems. A lot of things rely
on the functionality provided by symbolic links, and you couldn't just
change the behaviour of them.

If you want an icon on your desktop that behaves like a Windows
shortcut, then you need to right click and create a new launcher as
opposed to creating a symbolic link. If you wanted a launcher to point
to /home/foo/bar, then the command required in the launcher would be:

nautilus --no-desktop /home/foo/bar

I'm closing this bug report as it doesn't really describe a bug. Thank
you and feel free to report any other bugs you find.
