[Bug 876105] Re: Remote Desktop Viewer (vinagre) does not remember passwords

2014-12-03 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Still exists in Utopic Unicorn (14.10). Nearly two years since the bug
was supposedly fixed upstream. Has upstream just not put out a release
with the fix in it, or has Ubuntu not taken the upstream release with
the fix?

[Bug 1518079] [NEW] scrollbars gone in 15.10

2015-11-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

When I use vinagre to connect to a remote display that is larger than my
local display, there are no scrollbars on the vinagre window to allow me
to scroll the remove display up/down or left/right.

There were scrollbars in 15.04. They have disappeared in 15.10.

[Bug 1547662] Re: user systemd services are not started on login

2016-02-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
OK then. Sorry for bothering you.

The documentation on this stuff is... sparse and difficult to navigate.

I'll make the change and reopen or open a new ticket if it still isn't
working.

[Bug 1536294] WifiSyslog.txt

2016-01-20 Thread Jonathan Kamens
apport information

** Attachment added: "WifiSyslog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1536294/+attachment/4553535/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => systemd (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

Ubuntu 15.10, I have several CIFS filesystems listed in /etc/fstab.

They don't mount at boot. If I list them by host name in /etc/fstab,
mount says name resolution failed in the boot logs. If I list them by IP
address, mount says the network is unreachable in the boot logs.

If fixed this by adding the following in /etc/systemd/system/remote-fs-
  pre.target.d/override.conf:

  [Unit]
  Requires=NetworkManager-wait-online.service
  After=NetworkManager-wait-online.service

See also #1313513. This is a problem in older, pre-systemd versions of Ubuntu
as well.

[Bug 1547662] [NEW] user systemd services are not started on login

2016-02-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I have two user systemd services, which you can see running here:

● [hostname elided]
State: running
 Jobs: 0 queued
   Failed: 0 units
Since: Tue 2016-02-16 20:03:38 EST; 2 days ago
   CGroup: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service
   ├─1922 /lib/systemd/systemd --user
   ├─1969 (sd-pam)
   ├─x10-transceiver.service
   │ ├─6074 /usr/bin/perl /home/jik/src/CM19aDriver/service.pl
   │ ├─6075 python CM19aDriver.py
   │ └─6080 tail -f cm19a.log
   └─eruv.service
 └─6083 /usr/bin/perl /home/jik/scripts/eruv.pl

They're running because I did "systemctl --user start x10-transceiver"
and "systemctl --user start eruv". They did NOT launch automatically
when I logged in, which is what this bug report is about. They're
supposed to.

Note that they are enabled:

[Bug 1726403] [NEW] Sound app controls are gone from top bar menus

2017-10-23 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

In 17.04, when Rhythmbox was running, I was able to launch Rhyhmbox,
play/pause, fast forward / reverse, etc., from the top bar menus, and
the menus also showed the current playing song. I.e., there was
essentially a mini-player in the top-bar menu.

It's gone in 17.10. When I launch rhythmbox and then close the rhythmbox
window, music keeps playing like in 17.04, but there's no way for me to
control it or to easily open the main rhythmbox window.

[Bug 1726538] [NEW] Dual monitor configuration not saved across logout / login

2017-10-23 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

System76 Galaga UltraPro laptop.

Two monitors, one plugged into the DisplayPort and one plugged into
HDMI.

I use the Displays settings page to tell the system which monitor is on
the right and which is on the left, and tell it to make the left monitor
the primary one. All is well.

Then I log out and log back in.

Now the two monitors are reversed -- i.e., it thinks that the monitor on
the right is on the left and vice versa -- and the right monitor (which,
remember, it thinks is on the left) is the primary one.

In short, it forgets the configuration I told it to use immediately
before logging out.

[Bug 1733032] [NEW] touchpad disable while typing, disable tap-to-click don't work in 17.10

2017-11-17 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 17.10, my mouse pointer is repeatedly and frequently
getting moved against my will when I am typing on my laptop keyboard (as
opposed to external keyboard) because my hand brushes against the
touchpad or even just near its surface.

Furthermore, I don't want tap-to-click to be enabled. I want to actually
have to push down on the mousepad hard enough to click it to generate a
mouse button event. I can't figure out how to disable tap-to-click in
17.10 either.

I did not have these problems _at all_ in 17.04.

I have the touchpad click method set to "Areas" and "Disable While
Typing" enabled in gnome-tweak-tool. This does not help.

I have these lines in the touchpad section of
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf as well:

Option "DisableWhileTyping" "true"
Option "PalmDetection" "true"
Option "Tapping" "false"

They don't help either.

This is a substantial regression in functionality from 17.04.

It appears to be a problem using both Wayland and Xorg.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 1733033] [NEW] drag-and-drop suddenly stops working in app running under Wayland until I restart app

2017-11-17 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Many times since I upgraded to 17.10 and started using GNOME on Wayland
as my desktop, I've found in Thunderbird that I suddenly stopped being
able to drag and drop messages into folders. I can click and hold the
message and drag it, but when I hover my mouse over the destination
folder nothing happens.

This seems to be a problem related to gnome-shell + Wayland, because
after like the nth time it happened I was sufficiently annoyed that I
decided to find out if it would occur under Xorg, and in the week+ since
I switched to from Wayland to Xorg it hasn't happened a single time.

2017-10-30 Thread Jonathan Kamens
>I believe you can still see estimated battery time remaining if you
click on the panel menu (top right?).

Yes. And this is _much_ less convenience. When I am racing against the
clock trying to get something done before my battery runs out, the last
thing I want to have to do is move my mouse up to the corner of the
screen and click just to see how much time I have left. What I want to
be able to do is glance quickly at the corner while continuing to work.

The new functionality -- percentage instead of time remaining -- is
simply an inferior user experience.

[Bug 1726888] [NEW] Dock right-click window list pointlessly moved to "All Windows" submenu

2017-10-24 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 17.10, when I right click on an application in the dock,
rather than seeing a list of all my windows for that application in the
menu that pops up, that list has now been relegated to an "All Windows"
submenu.

This is pointless and stupid. It adds two extra actions -- moving the
mouse to the "All Windows" menu item and clicking on it -- every time I
want to switch to a different application window using the dock. I can't
see any justification for this change whatsoever. Please bring back the
old behavior.

(Also, the "All Windows" submenu now shows pictures of windows as well
as window titles. The presence of those pictures should be configurable
(at least). I don't need to see pictures of my windows, the titles were
always sufficient, took up less space, and were quicker to parse and
navigate than pictures are.)

I think this is regression-release because the default display manager
in Ubuntu 17.04 was not broken in this way and the default display
manager in Ubuntu 17.10 is.

But hey, what do I know, I'm just an end user.

I'm not sure, but this may qualify as `regression-release`, because I
actually use xdg-open to open mp3 files, which worked reliably in 17.04
but is failing in 17.10 because of this `gio open` problem.

[Bug 1729012] [NEW] "gio open /tmp/whatever.mp3" only opens the file (with totem) every other time it is called

2017-10-31 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I run "gio open /tmp/whatever.mp3". It silently does nothing, i.e., the
mp3 does not play, and yet exits with status 0. I run exactly the same
command again. It opens totem to play the mp3. This seems to be
repeatable: when I run the command repeatedly, it alternatives between
doing nothing and playing the mp3.

I've attached two files showing the output of strace when the command
succeeds and fails. I can't figure out what the heck is going on.

[Bug 1769720] Re: Logged out when unplugging external monitors with screen locked and lid closed

2018-05-08 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Note that there are crashes around the same time in /usr/lib/hidpi-
daemon/hidpi-daemon and /usr/lib/hidpi-daemon/hidpi-notification, which
are provided by System76, but looking at the dumps in /var/crash for
them, it looks like they are crashing _as a result of_ the gnome-shell
crash, as opposed to because of it.

The hidpi-daemon crash says this:

 GLib.GError: g-dbus-error-quark:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient
disconnected from message bus without replying (4)

which I _think_ means it was trying to message gnome-shell and failed
because the shell had crashed. And the hidpi-notification crash says
this:

Title: hidpi-notification crashed with GLib.GError in get(): g-dbus-
error-quark: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The
name com.system76.hidpi was not provided by any .service files (2)

which I think means that it crashed because hidpi-daemon crashed.

[Bug 1769720] [NEW] Logged out when unplugging external monitors with screen locked and lid closed

2018-05-07 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) 64-bit on a System76 Galaga UltraPro
laptop. At work, I plug two displays into my laptop, one DisplayPort and
one HDMI.

If, while both displays are plugged in and the laptop lid is closed and
the laptop's built-in display is therefore disabled, I:

1. lock my screen;
2. unplug both displays at about the same time;
3. wait about ten seconds; and then
4. open my laptop lid,

I find that I have been logged out.

If I immediately log back in to the built-in display, a couple seconds
after I log in, the screen locks. If I then immediately log out and log
back in again, the screen does _not_ lock.

It seems that this weird lock-right-after-login behavior is related to
the fact that I get logged out as described above. It seems that the
shell remembers that it is supposed to be locked despite the crash /
logout, such that when I log back in, it realizes that it's supposed to
be locked and locks itself.

Note that I am filing this bug as instructed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1721428/comments/105: "BTW,
we have fixed many gnome-shell bugs with these symptoms recently in
Ubuntu 18.04. So please try 18.04 and log a new bug if you have any
problems."

[Bug 1727742] Re: "peek" hangs Wayland display server

2017-10-26 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I am confused.

How do we know this is a gnome-shell issue rather than a Wayland issue?

As I noted in my bug report, peek works just fine if I use it under
Xorg. In both cases I'm using the same gnome-shell.

What good is it going to do for me to report this as a bug to the GNOME
team, when Wayland is an Ubuntu thing, not a GNOME thing?

Relevant:

Launching chrome like `XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity google-chrome-stable"
fixes the issue. It appears that Chrome doesn't like the preset value,
`ubuntu:GNOME`.

I suppose that makes this a Chrome bug, not an Ubuntu bug?

[Bug 1726195] [NEW] Can't change focus with Alt-`, Alt-Tab when using Sloppy Window Focus

2017-10-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I have Window Focus set to Sloppy under Windows in gnome-tweak-tool.

When I Alt-` or Alt-Tab to switch to another window, focus switches to
the new window briefly and then switches back to the window that the
mouse is hovering over.

This is a regression from 17.04.

[Bug 1728045] [NEW] Please restore battery time remaining to top bar!

2017-10-27 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 17.04 and earlier, I was able to display the amount of battery
life remaining AS TIME in the top bar of my screen.

Now all I'm able to display, in 17.10, is the battery percentage.

Frankly, I don't give a flying fig about battery percentage, and I'm not
sure most other people do either. What I care about is how much time I
have left to work on my laptop before it's out of power.

If you want to display _both_ the percentage and the time remaining, or
allow the user to choose which to display, that would be great. But just
taking away the eminently useful time remaining and replacing it with
the much less useful percentage is annoying and should be fixed.

[Bug 1728078] [NEW] "Resize Info" (compiz plugin) no longer available in 17.10 with Wayland

2017-10-27 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I like seeing the window geometry when I'm resizing a window. This makes
it easy, e.g., to resize a terminal window to one of the standard sizes
like 80x24, or to ensure that an Emacs window has the number of columns
that I want it to when I'm done editing a file with longer lines than
that.

In 17.04 and earlier, the "Resize Info" compiz plugin provided this
functionality.

I believe compiz is no longer used in 17.10 with Wayland sessions, and
this functionality appears to be gone with no way to get it back.

Please bring back resize info.

[Bug 1733032] Re: touchpad disable while typing, disable tap-to-click don't work in 17.10

2017-12-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
/me Checks if I am an idiot.

Nope, looks like I am not an idiot!

The only settings available in Settings > Devices > Mouse & Touchpad are
"Primary Button", "Mouse Speed", and "Natural Scrolling".

And as you can see from the Xorg.0.log which I have attached, the
touchpad appears to be detected as a touchpad just fine.

Also, it seems highly questionable to change a bug from Confirmed to
Incomplete when five different people have reported that it affects
them.

[Bug 1765401] Re: gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-20 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Thanks for your suggestions.

>The list of files you have tried didn't include
>$HOME/.config/gtkrc-2.0
>My own experimentation shows settings in this file take precedence over
>$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0

1) Just tried it, doesn't make any difference.

2) I actually tried running GnuCash under a debugger, and I observed it
in the debugger opening and parsing both ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and
~/.gtkrc-2.0.gnucash, so I don't think the issue is that my config files
are in the wrong place (and that shouldn't even matter, because the
setting in dconf is correct and GnuCash should be obeying that setting
even if there are no config files at all).

>In addition you may check for the presence of
>/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
>Which may also set this as well as the gtkrc file for the current gtk theme
>Bionic is using.

Doesn't exist.

[Bug 1765401] Re: gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Also tried putting `gtk-toolbar-style = GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH` in
~/.gtkrc-2.0 and `[Settings]\ngtk-toolbar-style = GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH` in
~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. The latter causes the output of gtk-
query-settings to change, but neither of these settings causes GnuCash
to behave differently.

Also tried creating ~/.gtkrc-2.0.gnucash and putting the same contents
as for ~/.gtkrc-2.0. Didn't help.

When I run strace on gnucash, it shows that it is reading both
~/.gtkrc-2.0.gnucash and ~/.gtkrc-2.0.

[Bug 1765401] [NEW] gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I like big buttons with text labels below them in GnuCash toolbars.

Fortunately, that's exactly what I had in Ubuntu 17.10.

However, having upgraded to 18.04 this morning, suddenly the GnuCash
toolbars are back to being small buttons with no text labels.

There are SO MANY PLACES to set this preference, and yet, it's not
working:

$ gconftool-2 --search-key-regex toolbar
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style = both
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_detachable = false
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_icons_size = large-toolbar
$ gconftool --search-key-regex toolbar
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style = both
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_detachable = false
 /desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_icons_size = large-toolbar
$ dconf  dump /org/gnome/desktop/interface/ | grep toolbar
toolbar-style='both'
$ gtk-query-settings | grep toolbar
! gtk-toolbar-style: GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ
! gtk-toolbar-icon-size: GTK_ICON_SIZE_LARGE_TOOLBAR

I have no idea why that last one says "both-horiz" rather than "both". I
honestly have no idea where that setting is coming from and can't find
any way to find out. (I even tried running strace on gtk-query-settings
to see what it was reading, and that didn't help.)

I can't find any way to change this setting in gnome-tweaks.

Is the ability to have large icons with text below them simply gone in
18.04, or has the setting migrated to yet another location that I have
to set it in now (it seems like Ubuntu and/or GNOME decides to move
settings to a completely new backend just for the heck of it every few
releases).

[Bug 1765401] Re: gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
More info... I've confirmed that on 17.10, the toolbar style is
controlled by /org/gnome/desktop/interface/toolbar-style. When I edit
that setting in dconf-editor in 17.10, the change is reflected in the
open GnuCash window, but when I edit that exact same setting in dconf-
editor in 18.04, it has no effect on the open GnuCash window.

[Bug 1765401] Re: gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Note: GnuCash 3.0, when built from source, does not display the toolbar
correctly either.

When I run GtkInspector on GnuCash 3.0 (can't do it on Gnucash 2.7.19
because it's only available in gtk3) and examine the GtkSettings object,
it says that gtk-toolbar-style is set to both, as expected.

However, when I examine the toolbar-style setting on the GtkToolbar
object itself within GtkInspector, it has the wrong value, i.e., it's
value doesn't match what's in the GtkSettings object _on the same
process_.

Honestly, I have no idea WTF is going on here. I'm totally mystified,
and I've wasted most of a day trying to get to the bottom of this.

[Bug 1765401] Re: gtk+ toolbar style setting ignored in bionic?

2018-04-19 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Two additional notes:

1) This is not GnuCash-specific. You can see the same behavior in the
gtk-demo app included in gtk2.0-examples.

2) If I SSH into my Bionic box from a computer that's still on 17.10 and
run GnuCash on my 17.10 display over the X connection forwarded by SSH,
the toolbar are large and have labels.

[Bug 1791512] Re: The lock screen text box didn't mask the password I typed

2018-11-05 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I think there might be a race condition involved here, i.e., I think
this behavior only happens if you start typing your password at the
"wrong time" while the computer is in the process of waking up from
sleep.

Note that if you click the Cancel button and then try unlocking your
screen again, the password is properly masked.

I've unlocked my screen many times after waking my computer from sleep,
but I've only seen this happen once.

[Bug 1800492] [NEW] Screen seems to think it is still locked after I've unlocked it

2018-10-29 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Sometimes in 18.10 when I unlock my screen (well, not actually "unlock",
since I don't have the screensaver configured to lock, so more
accurately, when I disable the screensaver), I end up on a screen which
looks like the computer still sort of thinks the screensaver is
activated. My regular background isn't there, my system tray app
indicators are missing, and the system tray menu looks like the one that
shows when the screensaver is activated, but at the same time, there's a
launch tray at the left side of the screen, and the rest of the
ornamentation that usually displays when the screensaver is activated is
missing. See the attached screenshot.

Nothing I do at this point seems to have any effect, e.g. I can't
launch app windows from the tray.

This particular time this happened that has prompted me to report it was
when I was accessing my desktop remotely (that's how I got a
screenshot), but I _think_ I've also seen it when walking up to my desk
and turning off the screensaver locally by hitting the Enter key. I.e.,
I don't _think_ this bug is related to using a remote desktop, but I
can't be 100% certain. If I do notice it again when I'm local I'll
update this bug to confirm.

[Bug 1801757] [NEW] all app indicators disappear

2018-11-05 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Occasionally all of my app indicators just disappear. Right now, for
example the only icons in my top bar are the wifi icon, the volume icon,
and the battery charge icon. Everything else is gone. The applications
associated with the missing indicators, e.g., Dropbox, Cloud Station
Drive, Pritunl, Shutter, are still running, but their app indicators are
no longer there.

The only way I've found to get them back is to log out and log back in.

I have no idea what provokes this behavior.

[Bug 1801757] Re: all app indicators disappear

2018-11-05 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Before, it looks like the attached (though there is also a Shutter
indicator, which disappears while I'm taking the screen capture).

Afterwards everything to the left of the wifi indicator (i.e., the
Yubioath Desktop indicator and everything to the left of it) is gone.

[Bug 1802574] [NEW] laptop screen never comes on after undock / sleep / open of laptop

2018-11-09 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I use a ThinkPad dock with two monitors plugged into it. I have a udev
job configured to automatically put my laptop to sleep when I undock it.

So, I'm working on my laptop in the dock. I undock it and drop it into
my backpack. All by itself, it goes to sleep. A few minutes later, I
open the laptop and it wakes up. I know it's up because the power light
and LED on the lid both go to solid. But the laptop screen never comes
on.

I've undocked twice since upgrading to 18.10. This has happened both
times. It's a regression from 18.04.1.

[Bug 1802574] Re: laptop screen never comes on after undock / sleep / open of laptop

2018-11-12 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I've already got apport configured to report everything (i.e., I've
already done the workaround suggested in bug 994921), and there is no
crash either in /var/crash or on https://errors.ubuntu.com. I don't
think a crash is what's happening here.

Additional data:

* If, after I've woken up my laptop and the screen is blank, I put it
back in the dock with the lid closed, the dock's two monitors come alive
just fine.

* If I then open the laptop lid, the monitors reconfigure themselves and
I correctly end up with both the two monitors and the laptop screen all
live.

* Ditto if I then close the lid -- the displays reconfigure themselves
and only the two dock monitors are enabled.

* If I temporarily disable the udev script that causes the laptop to go
to sleep automatically when I undock it, then when I undock it and open
the lid the screen comes on just fine.

* When the screen is in the off-but-should-be-on state I've reported
here, Ctrl-Alt-F* doesn't switch to a different VTY.

* This problem happens _almost_ every time I undock, but not every time.
I've tried it seven or eight times, and one of those times, the screen
came on properly when I woke the laptop by opening the lid. All the
other times the screen never came on until I either power-cycled or put
the laptop back in the dock.

[Bug 1810404] [NEW] printing options set in control center don't work

2019-01-03 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

1. Open settings.
2. Go to Devices / Printers.
3. Click "Add..." and add a network printer with a duplex unit located
automatically by the network scan.
4. Click the gear and elect "Printing Options".
5. Change the "Two-sided" option to enable two-sided printing.
6. Close the options dialog and settings window.
7. Print a document with multiple pages to that printer with "lp -d
printer-name filename".
8. Observe how it prints single-sided.

To get the setting to stick for real, I had to click on "Additional
Printer Settings..." and change it there.

[Bug 1812745] [NEW] Rubbish Bin icon on desktop doesn't work, then suddenly starts working

2019-01-21 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Immediately after upgrading from cosmic to disco, double-clicking the
"Rubbish Bin" icon on my desktop does nothing.

I try many times, does nothing.

I open a Nautilus window by clicking on the Nautilus icon in the
sidebar, and select "Rubbish Bin" in that window, and I am able to view
it just fine.

Then I double-click the Rubbish Bin icon on the desktop again, and a
window flashes quickly and then disappears.

Then I click it again, and now it is magically working properly, i.e.,
double-clicking opens a Nautilus window displaying the Rubbish Bin.

A couple minutes later I try again, and it's not working again.

Etc.

[Bug 1812746] [NEW] desktop icon created by VirtualBox no longer working in disco

2019-01-21 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I told VirtualBox to create a desktop icon for one of my virtual
machines. It worked just fine in cosmic.

After upgrading to disco, however, instead of showing up as an icon, it
shows up as a ".desktop" text file, and double-clicking it just opens
the text file in gedit.

I tried deleting and recreating the icon in VirtualBox, and that didn't
help.

[Bug 1812885] Re: Rename shell script on desktop, nautilus keeps trying to execute it under its old name

2019-01-23 Thread Jonathan Kamens
The issue persists in a slightly different form with .desktop files:

1. Create a .desktop file on the desktop.
2. Right click on it and give it permission to launch.
3. Double-click on it and confirm that it launches.
4. Mv it to a new name in a terminal window.
5. Observe how it remains displayed as an app icon rather than switching to a
text file.
6. Further observe that when you right-click on it, there is a "Don't Allow
Launching" menu command available.
6. Double-click on it and observe that instead of launching, it opens in gedit.

Either (a) double-clicking on the renamed .desktop file should cause the
app to launch, or (b) the icon should change to a text-file icon and the
menu item should change to "Allow Launching" when the file is renamed.

The current behavior, however, is an incorrect combination of those two
possible correct behaviors.

*sigh* Apparently the maintainer of the extension has decided that for
"security reasons" you have to right-click on ".desktop" files and
enable them before they will be displayed as app icons and executable.
So I guess this isn't a bug. Just an IMO poor design decision.

TL;DR Not considered a bug by the maintainer, don't reopen bug.

[Bug 1802574] Re: laptop screen never comes on after undock / sleep / open of laptop

2018-11-17 Thread Jonathan Kamens
OK, so, I've learned more about this.

If I wait for like 10-15 seconds after waking the laptop and type ctrl-
alt-f1, then after a long delay after that the screen will switch to the
GNOME login screen, and then if I select my account and type my
password, I am brought back to my previous session. But, there's
something weird about the state of things at that point. E.g., if I then
put the laptop to sleep and wake it back up again, the lock screen for
my session appears, but it won't accept any keyboard or mouse input. To
get back into my session I have to do the ctrl-alt-f1 trick again.

If I open the laptop while docked, wait for the built-in screen to
activate such that all three monitors are active, then undock and
suspend the laptop before gdm3 finishes reconfiguring so that only the
laptop screen is active, then I'm in the same boat as the original bug
report when I wake up the laptop, i.e., the screen remains black no
matter how long I wait, but if I wait a while after waking and then type
ctrl-alt-f1 I can proceed as in the previous paragraph.

If I open the laptop while docked, wait for the built-in screen to
activate such that all three monitors are active, undock, wait for gdm3
to finish reconfiguring so that only the laptop screen is active, _then_
suspend the laptop, then when I wake the laptop back up the screen does
come on.

In short, it appears that the problem is related to suspending the
computer when it is in the middle of reconfiguring what its active
screens are. It doesn't finish or restart that configuration when it
wakes up, so it remains in a weird, messed-up state.

At least, that's my best guess, given the data I've collected.

None of the other logs in /var/log/cups are modified.

The printer in question IS NOT LISTED IN /ETC/CUPS/PRINTERS.CONF. I
honestly have no idea where gnome-control-center is getting it from. I
had a theory that maybe a previous invocation of gnome-control-center
removed it from printers.conf but didn't tell CUPS to reload, so it was
in memory in cupsd but not on disk, but I tried restarting cupsd and the
problem persists. I literally have no idea where gnome-control-center is
getting that printer from.

Please don't ask me for any more information, I'm sick and tired of this
and I've already wasted too much time on it. All the issues I've
reported have been extremely easy for me to reproduce. If you are unable
to reproduce them, I have no idea why and have no time to help you
further. If you haven't even tried, then stop wasting my time.

[Bug 1810404] Re: printing options set in control center don't work

2019-01-10 Thread Jonathan Kamens
When I reopened the settings window, the duplex setting had reverted to
single-sided.

I am currently unable to reproduce this issue, because now when I add
the network printer in question the printing options page is blank, so I
can't capture a journalctl of what happens when I try to change its
duplex option. Why is the printing options page blank? Another bug.

And then there's a third bug... After adding that new network printer I
removed it, and the UI said it was removed, but then when I closed and
reopened the printer settings page in control center, there it was, back
again.

Just in general, the printer settings page in control center has all
sort of wrong behaviors like this. I've observed stuff like this many
times in the past few years, too many to enumerate them all.

My guess is that there's a whole bunch of code in this app that should
be doing error checking but isn't.

You can leave this bug marked "Incomplete" and do nothing, or you can,
y'know, maybe actually have someone try to reproduce it or even maybe
look at the code and try to find the places where it's not doing the
error checking that it could be. Whatevs.

[Bug 428817] Re: Print Dialog does not allow editing of page parameters

2019-01-07 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I was having this problem on Ubuntu 18.10 (WOW, THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN
AROUND FOR A VERY LONG TIME) with my HP LaserJet 500 color M551 printer.
When I tried to install it, the driver that kept getting selected was
"HP LaserJet 500 color M551, driverless, cups-filters 1.21.3". This,
despite the fact that I have "hpijs-ppds", "hplip", and "hplip-data"
installed.

I solved the problem by downloading the current version of HPLIP
directly from HP (https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ or
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing), unpacking it,
locating the PPD for my printer in the source code ("hp-
laserjet_500_color_m551-ps.ppd"), and changing the configured driver of
the printer installed in Linux to specify that PPD directly rather than
using the recommended driver.

I think the problem here, or at least one of the problems here, is not
nearly all of the HP printer drivers are being installed by Ubuntu. In
particular, while I can't say for certain, it looks to me like the
hpijs-ppds package is only installing a few fax drivers, not the full
array of drivers available in HP's HPLIP package. I have no idea why
that's the case.

[Bug 1812883] [NEW] Desktop view flashes every time ~/Desktop changes, even if the changes are invisible

2019-01-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

All of the icons on my desktop visibly flash every time I change
anything in the folder ~/Desktop, even if the change is not something
that is visible on my desktop.

For example, "touch ~/Desktop/.#foo".

I mean, the icons that haven't changed should never flash at all, even
if a change is made that _does_ affect the visible display -- only the
things that are actually new or different should change their
appearance, and everything else should remain the same and not flash.
But at the very least, there should be no flash when there are no
visible changes.

[Bug 1812884] [NEW] Can't execute shell scripts with spaces in their names from desktop

2019-01-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Create a shell script with a space in its name in /tmp. Make sure the
script is executable. Mv it into ~/Desktop. (You have to do it this way
rather than creating it directly on the desktop because of the other bug
I just filed.) Try to double-click on it. You will get an error
notification instead of the script executing. Shell scripts added to the

[Bug 1812885] [NEW] Rename shell script on desktop, nautilus keeps trying to execute it under its old name

2019-01-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Create a shell script in /tmp. Make the script executable. Mv it into
~/Desktop. Double-click it and note that it executes. Now rename the
file with mv in a terminal window. Double-click it again and note how
nautilus attempts to execute it under the old name, which of course
fails, and you get a notification about that instead of the script
executing.

[Bug 1812880] [NEW] create shell script file on Desktop, chmod it so that it is executable, icon remains text file instead of shell script and won't launch on double-click

2019-01-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

Using a text editor, create a file on your Desktop that you intend to be
a shell script. When you save it initially, it won't be executable
(unless your text editor is too smart for its own good), so it will be
displayed on the desktop as a text file.

Now do "chmod +x" on the file in a terminal window.

It's still displayed on the desktop as a text file, and you still can't
execute it.

Now mv it out of your desktop and into /tmp, and then mv it back onto
your desktop. Now the icon is displayed as a shell script and can be
double-clicked.

The icon for a file on the desktop should turn from text file to
executable script as soon as the file itself turns from text file to
executable script.

[Bug 1812745] Re: Rubbish Bin icon on desktop doesn't work, then suddenly starts working

2019-01-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Sorry, having already filed nine bugs about disco in the past 24 hours,
I now need to move on with my life and do my actual job as opposed to
spending more time dealing with the tire fire that disco appears to be
right now.

P.S. Even if you're right that Dropbox or some other third-party
extension is partially to blame for this issue, please keep in mind how
many people use Dropbox and are not going to care for "It's Dropbox's
fault" as an explanation when things don't work properly for them after
they install or upgrade to disco.

[Bug 1812881] [NEW] backup file (files ending in ~) visible in Desktop on disco, were correctly) hidden in cosmic and previous releases

[Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files from desktop into applications

2019-01-28 Thread Jonathan Kamens
>you can still dnd from a nautilus view on the desktop

Right, because it's not like the reason why I put files on my Desktop is
because I use them often and want to be able to open quickly, or like
having to open a Nautilus window, click on Desktop, and then double-
click on the file to open it is slower than just being able to open the
file directly on the desktop. That's definitely not a stupid usability
regression that anyone who keeps files on their desktops is going to
notice right away.

>or double click on the file so it's easy to workaround...

Except that I frequently want to open files (images, text files) with
something other than the default application, and double-clicking
doesn't do that, and another thing that's missing from the extension is
the "Open with other application" right-click menu command
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/ShellExtensions/desktop-
icons/issues/32).

As one of my friends commented when I told him about all the absurd
regressions introduced by ripping this code out of Nautilus and moving
it to an incompletely implemented GNOME shell extension:
#ThisIsWhyIUseKDE

Frankly, I'm just about ready to switch myself. The penchant of GNOME's
developers for regressing functionality because they don't seem to
understand how people actually use their software is a long-standing,
incredibly frustrating problem.

2019-01-28 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I think you mean to link this to
https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/ShellExtensions/desktop-icons/issues/29?

I question your designation of this as a "Low" importance issue. This is
going to be a huge deal for people when 19.04 is released if it's not
fixed by then.

Does the change in status to "Triaged" mean that you do not need the

[Bug 1801757] Re: all app indicators disappear

2019-03-01 Thread Jonathan Kamens
As described above, the indicators disappear intermittently and come
back when I type Alt-F2 r RET. It seems to happen when the screen locks
automatically and then I come back later and unlock it, though I don't
know if it happens _every_ time the screen locks. I've attached my
journalctl output for today with unrelated, private information removed.
I've returned to my computer at least twice today and found the
indicators missing, the most recent time being for the session I'm
sitting in front of right now, i.e., if you can see in the journalctl
when my screen locks and unlocks, then this problem manifested in the
most recent iteration of that.

[Bug 1818348] [NEW] When window title bar controls are on left, close window button is cut off in title bar of Disks application

2019-03-02 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

When you configure your window title bar buttons to be on the left

[Bug 1817334] [NEW] dock disappears after apt dist-upgrade, needed to install gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock by hand, restart gnome-shell, and enable extension in tweaks

2019-02-22 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

I did an apt dist-upgrade and got a message telling me that gnome-shell
had crashed and asking if I wanted to report it. I figured it was just
something funky about the upgrade so didn't bother. Instead, I restarted
my machine just to get everything back into a sane state. Upon logging
in after doing that, I had no dock.

I dug around to try to figure out what was going on, and finally
stumbled upon the description for "Ubuntu Dock" in gnome-tweaks, which
told me to install dash to dock.

So I installed that with apt and then restarted gnome-shell and then
restarted gnome-tweaks and then enabled dash to dock and finally my dock
was back.

This is, shall we say, not an ideal upgrade experience.

[Bug 1818247] [NEW] Please enable remote desktop support in mutter for 19.04

2019-03-01 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Public bug reported:

gnome-remote-desktop is apparently being included in Ubuntu 19.04, so
mutter should be recompiled with remote desktop support enabled for
Ubuntu, so people can actually use it.

Then the comment at the end of the apt package description for gnome-
remote-desktop saying that needs to be done can be removed.
