I tested 1:46.3-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 following the described test case
worked perfectly with malcontent-gui installed. Clicking on the item
also properly launched malcontent-control to configure filtering.

[Bug 2077641] [NEW] Doesn't allow filtering all installed applications

2024-08-22 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

The malcontent package today doesn't really work as a user would expect
in Ubuntu. Known issues today:
 * Only allows blocking flatpak apps
 * Allow/Deny app installation only effects user installable flatpaks
via GNOME Software, which isn't included in Ubuntu. On a default
Ubuntu Desktop installation enabling/disabling software installation
   has no effect.

[ Impact ]

 * The update to 0.12 includes bug fixes related to search as well
   as additional translations
 * Ubuntu patches applied enable filter any app installed on the system
 * Hides the UI for enabling/disabling app installation as that switch doesn't
actually do what a user would expect on Ubuntu
 * Removes documentation related to the software installation UI

[ Test Plan ]

 * Ensure gnome-control-center >= 1:46.3-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 is installed
 * Add a new non-admin user with gnome-control-center
 * Selecting "Parental Controls" in the UI after creating the new account
   should open the malcontent-control dialog
 * Click unlock and enter your password to allow updating the app filter
 * The dialog should only show two entries under "Application Usage
Restrictions", "Restrict Web Browsers" and "Restrict Applications"
 * Select "Restrict Applications" should open a dialog showing all apps
 * Toggle the switch for an app and close the dialog
 * Login to a user session with the restricted user account and confirm the
application icon isn't show in the GNOME app grid

[ Regression Potential ]

 * Very low, malcontent isn't included in Ubuntu by default, and even
if it was installed, it wasn't accessible from gnome-control-center
as that was disabled until the SRU of
gnome-control-center=1:46.3-0ubuntu0.24.04.1
 * malcontent-control was accessible from the command line, but would only
allow filtering flatpak apps that included X-Parental-Control in the desktop
file

[Bug 648068] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with ImportError in ()

2010-09-28 Thread Ken VanDine
Since desktopcouch 0.6.6-0ubuntu1, python-desktopcouch has been just a
transitional package. /usr/lib/desktopcouch/desktopcouch-service and
the desktopcouch python module are actually provided by the same package
now, so this really shouldn't be an issue.

This was a change from debian that was merged back into ubuntu to fix a
circular dependency. I suspect this was a case of a broken install of
the package, since the install has been fixed now I doubt we could get
to the root cause of this problem. Closing this bug for now, please re-
open if anyone else experiences this.

[ Description ]

Update as part of the GNOME 3.36 stable release series

[ QA ]

Check you can launch the terminal and use it. Maybe check that different
themes, launching a custom command, custom terminal launchers, etc work.

There is a standing SRU exception for GNOME:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME

If the update causes issues they should be pretty apparent when running

[Bug 1917926] [NEW] Window focus issues in 3.38.3-3ubuntu1

2021-03-05 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

I switched to an Xorg session in hirsute today after upgrading gnome-
shell and mutter packages which just hit the release package. There are
very strange focus issues. Clicking on a window doesn't raise it to the
front, alt-tab seems to only switch between a subset of the one windows.
It's impossible to move windows with the mouse and resizing does not
work.

This occurred with:
gnome-shell=3.38.3-3ubuntu1
mutter=3.38.3-3ubuntu1

Downgrading these packages fixed it:
gnome-shell=3.38.3-2ubuntu2
mutter=3.38.3-2ubuntu1

[Bug 1788220] Re: [snap] Ubuntu 18.04 LTS includes gnome-calculator as a snap

2018-09-19 Thread Ken VanDine
This was caused by a fontconfig cache miss, which was caused by a
difference in the fontconfig cache version between what's bundled in the
snap vs the host cache on 18.04. This has been fixed with

[Bug 1756379] Re: Delay start of gnome-software service

2018-09-20 Thread Ken VanDine
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
On a default Bionic Desktop installation, gnome-software starts early and
slows down session startup. In the bootchart attached, it overlaps with
gnome-shell startup which is also resource intensive.
With gnome-software delayed gnome-shell starts 2 seconds faster.

+ gnome-software service startup should be delayed if it cannot be stop
+ completely.

- gnome-software service startup should be delayed if it cannot be stop
completely.
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Login to the default session
+ 2. After 60 seconds confirm their is a gnome-software process running
+
+ Expected result:
+ The gnome-software process should be running in the background allowing to
search for apps in the gnome-shell search
+
+ Observed result:
+ Works as expected (i.e. only looking for regressions).
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Very low, the change is very simple and well known method to delay autostart.
If it doesn't actually start, it will be dbus activated on the first attempt
to search which would just cause a slight delay in getting results

That's the upstream behavior of gnome-software. You have the click on
back button up top. If we want to consider changing that we'll need
some design work and review.

[Bug 1795959] [NEW] [FFe] Seed xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

2018-10-03 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

Security and MIR reviews have been completed for xdg-desktop-portal-
gtk[1] and xdg-desktop-portal[2].

These packages can improve desktop integration of snap packages. The
risk is low as nothing in the default desktop install actually exercises
the portals at this time. We need to seed the portals so they are
available when snaps are installed that can utilize them. Flatpak
packages will also benefit.

[Bug 1794951] Re: Calculator (snap) is slow to start on a freshly installed Cosmic machine

2018-10-23 Thread Ken VanDine
@willcooke just tested again and confirmed it launches in about 2
seconds with rev 74. It should be more like 25 seconds with the
fontconfig cache misses. I suspect @didrocks' issue is unrelated as he
was seeing more like 10 seconds. Perhaps just slower disk access under
qemu.

[Bug 1778361] Re: The Processes tab only displays the current user's processes

2018-10-24 Thread Ken VanDine
Yeah, installed from the deb it doesn't have this behavior. The UI
wants to show whatever state it was in when it started, so I think the
dconf setting is getting set. For example, if I tick "All processes"
when just the user processes are listed, I briefly see all processes
then it reverts back. The "All processes" radio item is still ticked
though. If I restart gnome-system-monitor it will display all processes
properly. If I think tick "My processes" I briefly only see my
processes then it reverts back to all until restarting the app again.

[Bug 1869905] [NEW] OnlyShowIn and NotShowIn not properly honored

2020-03-31 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

glib provides g_app_info_should_show to determine if a desktop file
should be shown in the app grid based on OnlyShowIn and NotShowIn using
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP. This isn't being honored in gnome-shell when
NotShowIn=ubuntu:GNOME or OnlyShowIn=ubuntu:GNOME and
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is ubuntu:GNOME.

glib does have tests for this that are still passing and @seb128 wrote a
simple test case to show the glib API does the right thing.

The snap-store snap in the beta channel provides two desktop files, one
to be displayed when XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is ubuntu:GNOME and one for
when it isn't.

[Bug 1866998] Re: Snap Store snap can be uninstalled using Snap Store

2020-04-02 Thread Ken VanDine
We also shouldn't be able to remove core, core18, snapd or the various
content snaps that other snaps depend on like:

gnome-3-26-1604
gnome-3-28-1804
gnome-3-34-1804
gtk-common-themes
gtk2-common-themes
kde-frameworks-5-core18
kde-frameworks-5-qt-5-14-core18
