[Desktop-packages] [Bug 813775] Re: LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-CRITICAL **: dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_shortcut: assertion `gtk_accelerator_valid(key, modifier)' failed

2011-08-22 Thread jc1985
just upgraded to firefox 6 on natty, firefox crashes everytime I click on
something on gmail or facebook...
launching firefox from terminal gives me this error :
LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-CRITICAL **: dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_shortcut: assertion
`gtk_accelerator_valid(key, modifier)' failed

this bug seems critical to me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 676793] Re: Need to Double-Click ISO Images TWICE Before Brasero Opens to Burn to Disc

2011-08-22 Thread OzzyFrank
Well, if I had something to report in the last 60 days, I would have. I
can say that the record is now 9 times before the burn dialogue would
pop up, so definitely not getting any better! System updated/upgraded,
but still persists in a major way - there is not one single time the
dialogue has appeared on a single double-click.

Title:
Need to Double-Click ISO Images TWICE Before Brasero Opens to Burn to
  Disc

Status in “brasero” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: brasero

  Ubuntu 10.10 using Brasero 2.32.0-0ubuntu2

Before upgrade to 10.10, ISO images only needed to be double-clicked
once for Brasero's Burn to Disc to appear.

After upgrade to 10.10, double-clicking an ISO image results in the
cursor showing busy, and in the taskbar a button appears saying it
is Opening..., but after quite a few seconds of this, nothing
appears after the taskbar button vanishes. Double-clicking the ISO a
second time finally achieves the desired outcome.

Additional info: The only other thing I can think of to mention,
though I doubt it has anything to do with this, is that after the
upgrade Brasero kept (apparently) creating image checksums (though I
couldn't find any evidence it was doing more than wasting time). I
went into Edit Plugins and disabled both the File Checksums and
Image Checksums plugins. I'm not actually sure if the behaviour above
was from the start (after the upgrade) or after disabling the plugins
(since I only burned an image or two before looking for how to disable
  the annoying checksum creation).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 830871] [NEW] Mobile broadband reconnection fails

2011-08-22 Thread Drew McCray
Public bug reported:

Scenario: Connected to cellular broadband connection: connection drops,
automatic reconnection starts.

Expected result: Connection re-establishes.
Actual result: Same as Expected result, OR NM forgets that it has a saved
password and repeatedly prompts for password. No input password will validate,
connection eventually drops due to failed authentication. Subsequent
reconnection attempts (manual and automatic) result in same behavior. Error
persists through disconnection/reconnection (replug) of wireless device (Moto
RAZR V3C in this case). Restart of NM (or reboot) required to establish new
connection. Identical issue on second system, same arch/versions installed, but
otherwise drastically different hardware aside from phone.

Bug description:
Currently, Unity pretends to be GNOME. It's a registered XDG
  environment (http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-
spec/latest/apb.html) but no tools look for its value, and few
  .desktop files use it.

But that's changing. At least indicator-datetime's preference window
wants to be only shown in Unity and not shown in GNOME. So that's a
solid example of why this would be useful. And it may be useful for
  other things in the future.

So many things need to change:
   * lightdm needs to set XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
   * gnome-menus needs to respect XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP (gnome bug 653440)
   * desktop files throughout GNOME likely need to add Unity; to their
OnlyShowIn or NotShowIn values

  else to put it.

The keyboard layout manager (gnome-keyboard-layout) doesn't allow for
more than four installed layouts, which is a bit of a limitation when
working in a multi-language setting. I would love this limit to be

Title:
Lucid: evince produces error message on HP LaserJet 5M while printing
  with postscript

Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evince

If I try to print some PDFs with evince per HP LaserJet 5M
Foomatic/Postscript the display on my printers shows me following error
  79 Service (01bf)
and after that does nothing. I have to powercycle it to get it responsible
again.

  The problem
  - does not appear when printing with evince per HP LaserJet 5M -
CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.5 Simplified
  - does not appear when printing with epdfview and HP LaserJet 5M
Foomatic/Postscript
  - does not appear when printing with Windows 7 and its Postscript-driver
Only with evince and postscript. So I think that a hardware failure can be
ruled out.

  I will attach the PDF.
As a sidenote: I tried to print 2 pages from the PDF on one page from the
printer if that matters.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 830926] [NEW] Evolution can't load Google calendar anymore

  Steps to reproduce:

1.) Type a few key strokes.
2.) Try to move the cursor using the touchpad.

  Expected result:

  Cursor moves immediately

  Actual result:

  Cursor sticks for several seconds

This could very well be strongly linked to the hardware used (Samsung
N310, using the touchpad, not a mouse), so let's see if anyone else
  can reproduce.

Title:
Unable to login without logging into the terminal first

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Ok, it turns out removing the .dmrc file isn't the cause of my logins
  working:

I removed it yesterday while I was logged in and shutdown my computer.
Today I switched my computer on and the login screen, again, wouldn't
let me in. I jumped into terminal to remove the .dmrc file, only to
discover that it wasn't there. I went back to the login screen and
this time it let me straight in.

So it looks like simply logging into the terminal allows the login
  screen to work...

  OLD:
After a recent dist-upgrade, I have been unable to login without first
deleting the .dmrc file within my home directory.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828623] Re: gnome control centre does not allow you to disable the laptop screen while leaving an external connected screen working

2011-08-22 Thread Dave Russell
A workaround is to run the following commands:

xrandr --size 1920x1200 --output LVDS1 --off --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1200
compiz --replace

Still, it really should work via the gui...

able to switch off the laptops internal display, only leaving the

Screen detection works fine, mirrored screen works fine, but disabling

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 829186] Re: Mixes static and GI library bindings

2011-08-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package jockey - 0.9.4-0ubuntu1

---
jockey (0.9.4-0ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * New upstream bug fix release:
- oslib.py: Do not encourage to report package installation failure as
SystemError, it will appear as a backend crash
- jockey-gtk: Fix message_type argument to Gtk.MessageBox constructor
- jockey/ui.py: For invalid combinations of LC_MESSAGES and LC_CTYPE, force
  stdout/stderr encoding to UTF-8 instead of C. (LP: #760883)
- Fix GLib and GObject imports to be compatible with the future pygobject
  3.0. (LP: #829186)
- jockey/detection.py, _driverid_to_handler(): In the case that there are
multiple matching custom handlers for a DriverID, also check that their
  package attribute matches.
- tests/run: Also support specifying individual test method names
  * Add debian/testpkgs/: Scripts and equivs control files for dummy
driver packages which are convenient for testing.
  * debian/rules: Call debian/testpkgs/clean to ensure that we don't ship
build stuff there.
  * data/handlers/{fglrx,nvidia}.py: Prevent crash if
get_alternative_by_name() returns nothing.
  * jockey/oslib.py, {install,remove}_package(): Capture apt's stdout/err into
the log file, to get proper error messages when packages fail to install.
(LP: #552300).
  * jockey/oslib.py, install_package(): Avoid raising a SystemError when a
package fails to install in apt, as this will appear as a crash in Jockey.
Just point out the error in the log file instead. (LP: #804709)
  * tests/oslib.py: Update test cases for above change.
  * tests/oslib.py: Fix apt initialization to work with current apt versions.
  * data/handlers/{fglrx,nvidia}.py: Also show the -updates variants of the
drivers, which will be updated to newer upstream versions after the
Ubuntu release. (UbuntuSpec:desktop-o-xorg-stakeholders-request)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 829921] Re: offensive use of 'English'

--

  offensive use of 'English'

Status in “language-selector” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I have been presented with a window 'Language Support' that lists
'Language for menus and windows:' and instructs me to 'Drag languages
to arrange them in order of preference.

  It lists these languages:

  English (United Kingdom)
  English
  English (Australia)

I could claim that the first two entries are duplicates, but this
would seem to be a case of using 'English' to mean the variant used in
the USA. As I am English, I find this offensive since English is
English - the UK contains several countries each with their own
language. So, IMO, the correct list should be :

  English
  English (United States)
  English (Australia)

However, I realise that is confusing to people from the United States
and that they are likely the majority in terms of English (variant)
speakers. The usual 'solution' is to always specify the variant, ie :

  English (United Kingdom)
  English (United States)
  English (Australian)

  Please consider making the fix.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 720647] Re: gvfsd-ftp crashed with SIGSEGV in start_thread()

2011-08-22 Thread Roman Yagodin
Same problem appears when I try to duplicate file(s) on a ftp share via
gvfs-ftp. Problem persists since upgrade from Maverick to Natty.

I consider importance of the bug must be set to High, cause it makes
ftp in nautilus almost completely broken. Switching to another ftp
client like FileZilla doesn't add usability to Ubuntu Desktop,
especially when it goes to work with files in different locations at
same time (copy from nautilus smb share to ftp, e.g.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option when it is not supported

2011-08-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Retitling and reopening as per previous comment.

However, I still don't understand the rationale for having a machine
type whitelist.; see (2) in comment 5. Do we have hard data that
hibernation is consistently broken on some particular hardware, and the
reason isn't just partitioning?

My gut feeling is that we should just disable hibernation by default,
period (and perhaps provide an Ui configuration bit to enable it).
Maintaining and checking a whitelist will just cause a lot of
unnecessary effort which won't actually help a lot.

** Summary changed:

- Disable suspend/hibernate options when they are not supported
+ Disable hibernate option when it is not supported

Bug description:
Id like to proposse a change in the design of Power preferences in the
  GNOME control center: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Power

Instead going throuh the certification path, we can simply disable
the options about suspend/hibernate if Its not supported in the
current hardware (we have api for this in upower)

I think this solution is more scalable, as we do not need to maintain
a database with certified hardware. Also, we can add a button or a

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 463314] Re: gdm ignores timed/auto login on all but first greeter run

2011-08-22 Thread hamish
@Charlie Kravetz: read the full bug log and try it for yourself. it is
still broken in xubuntu 11.04 which makes ubuntu an unusable option for
kiosk installations where auto-relogin must happen.

in my books that's a rather serious problem.

see subject change by Kees Cook (kees) on 2009-12-03 which diverges
from the chatter in the original report and first bunch of messages in
the report.

i.e. gdm ignores timed/auto login on all but first greeter run ...
it does!

(this is not invalid. this has nothing to do with upgrading any more;
tested on a new install)

thanks,
Hamish

I initiated the upgrade with the command line sudo update-manager -d.
The conversion seemed to go ok. All previous recordings were still
accessable, showing the database was ok.

After the upgrade and reboot, the first thing I noticed is that,
Mythbuntu 9.10 askes me to log in every time as user eric. It didn't
do this in version 9.04, before the upgrade. Before, Mythtv launched
at bootup and no login was required.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 830272] Re: [GTK3] Category Top Rated screen is redundant with All screen

Title:
[GTK3] Category Top Rated screen is redundant with All screen

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:

  1. From the home screen, choose a category that has subcategories, e.g.
Internet.
  2. In the Top Rated area, click More.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  4. Click Back, then click All 276.

  What happens:
  1. The Top Rated area shows only eight items.
  2. The Top Rated screen shows only four more items, which is hardly worth
going to an extra screen for.
  2. The Top Rated screen has a repeating label, e.g. Internet Internet.
  2. The Top Rated screen has a sort menu, which is not useful for the reasons
given in bug 830234.
  3. The bottom of the screen says 12 items available, which is not correct
-- that just happens to be the number we chose to show.
  4. The All screen has the label Internet All, which is a bit naff.
  4. There's no useful reason you'd choose the Top Rated screen rather than
the All screen -- the All screen just shows more stuff.

The root cause seems to be that I wasn't clear about how Top Rated
in categories should work. The specification doesn't mention a Top
Rated screen for categories at all, but my sketch of the category
screens shows the Top Rated area having a More link.

  So, I suggest that:
  * the Top Rated area on a category screen show 12 items, not eight
  * we remove the separate Top Rated screen for categories
  * we remove the corresponding More buttons
  * the All screen should be sorted by rating by default, as it already is.

I'll draw updated category screen sketches that don't include the
  More button.

In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to
my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending
up on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two
  monitors.

This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen

I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor
the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the
monitors when determining where to put the bar.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 367037] Re: Error while burning - some files may be corrupted on the disc

2011-08-22 Thread John Kennaugh
My experience is that until recently CD/DVD Creator has always worked however
last time I used it I ended up with CDs which had the correct directory
structure and correct file sizes but unreadable *.jpg. files. The program was
unable to eject the CD and when I did - as instructed - I got the message some
files may be corrupted. I suspect the problem may have been caused when I
recently upgraded via the update manager from 10.04 to 10.10. I don't recall
having burned any CDs before this attempt since that upgrade.
What is somewhat bizarre is that according to the software centre CD/DVD
creator and Brasero are listed separately as if they are different applications
and Brasero is down as supported and CD/DVD creator isn't. CD/DVD creator 'more
info' does not mention Brasero.
When I insert a blank CD it offers to open CD/DVD Creator and if I select
open with it does not offer me Brasero yet Brasero is listed in my
applications menu and CD/DVD Creator isn't.
According to the software centre CD/DVD Creator is not installed. on my
computer and Brasero is.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828223] Re: [GTK3] Installed emblem missing from application icons in tile view

2011-08-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Thanks! That looks good.

As we discussed on IRC, probably we should have the installed emblem to
the bottom left of the icon consistently.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter?action=diffrev2=562rev1=561
But if you've implemented it such that you only need to change one piece
of code to change its position everywhere, it doesn't need changing for
this bug.

  1. Install one of the New or Top Rated applications.
  2. Return to the home screen.

What happens: The icon for the application you installed appears as normal.
What should happen: The application icon should have the installed emblem.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#software-icon: Except where
otherwise specified, whenever a package is currently installed, its
icon should be overlaid in the corner with the installed checkmark
  emblem.

There should be a function that is always used for drawing the icon
for any software item in any layout container. If the item is
installed, the function should draw the emblem too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 831032] [NEW] Installed navigation bar icon and installed emblem aren't related

2011-08-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

The Installed navigation bar icon is a monochrome all-in-one computer.

Installed items have an emblem on their icon, a white checkmark on a
green disc.

There's no relationship between the two, so it's not as easy to
understand the meaning of the installed emblem as it could be.

Perhaps the Installed icon should just be a monochrome version of the
installed emblem. Or maybe it should still be a computer, but with a
same-shaped checkmark on the screen of that computer.

It seems to be showing the raw Category data from the .desktop files,
rather than the USC category and subcategory.

If fixing this requires the new database needed for bug 426999 and bug
554180, and that can't be implemented in time, I think it would be
better in the meantime just not to show any category/subcategory data

Edit ~/.config/monitors.xml, find the monitor you want the launcher to

Now log out and log in again.

  Temporary workaround (no logout required):
  Open a Terminal window and...
  1. Run xrandr to find the NAME of the output you would like to make primary.
  2. Run: xrandr --output NAME --primary nohup unity --replace

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

  Binary package hint: unity

In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to
my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending
up on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two
  monitors.

This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen
application open on the laptop (hitting the upper left pixel of that
  monitor without going over).

I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor
the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the
monitors when determining where to put the bar.

Ideally the rendering of this could be improved, to be inline with the

1. Ubuntu Regular should be used (not heavier)
2. Circle of Friends added in correct position (to create visual space
before '11.10')
3. Step-down in font-size for '11.10' is different to the step-down
designated by the brand-extensions guidelines
4. Background dot-pattern overlay should be blocked out within the logo
exclusion zone
5. Colour choice could be tweaked to give a sharper 'white' warm gray feel

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

  *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
  https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

  *

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  distance name=left_width value=3/
  distance name=right_width value=3/
  distance name=bottom_height value=3/

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

On my workstation (10.65.4.190), my $(HOME) is mounted from an nfs

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 463314] Re: gdm ignores timed/auto login on all but first greeter run

2011-08-22 Thread Charlie Kravetz
hamish: Perhaps you should read what I really wrote above. This bug is
in GDM, which may affect each distribution. Let's remember, Xubuntu is
not Ubuntu, and mixing these does make it much more confusing to
determine what is really being used. As you state, it is still broken
in xubuntu 11.04 which makes ubuntu an unusable option is not a valid
argument. Xubuntu 11.04 is not Ubuntu, it derived from Ubuntu. Let's
attempt to keep these separate. A bug in GDM can affect all
distributions that use it. It is still a bug in GDM.

Mythbuntu upgraded pretty smoothly from 9.04 to 9.10 RC over the Net.

Is this Google+ poop? / not backward compatible?

Is this actually related to this bug or do I need to file a new one?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 831305] [NEW] errors in indentation while numbering in libreoffice writer

2011-08-22 Thread Satchit Bhogle
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal stable
Application: LibreOffice 3.3.3
OOO330m19 (Build:301)
tag libreoffice-3.3.3.1, Ubuntu package 1:3.3.3-1ubuntu2
Writer (installed via PPA)

Firstly, when using numbering of the style (i), (ii), (iii) etc, the
indentations are wrong. The third line (and often the fourth and sixth)
always has a greater indentation than the other lines. The numbers are
aligned vertically, but the text is not. It is approximately one TAB
further. This error does not manifest itself with other numbering styles
such as 1., 2., 3. or a), b), c) etc.

Secondly, when typing a., (a) or a) (without quotes), typing some
text and then hitting Enter, the next line does not become b., (b)
or b) respectively. Correct numbering can be performed by using
another numbering style and then changing it via the Bullets and
Numbering toolbar, but it is an inelegant solution. All other common
numbering styles work fine, though the options in the Bullets and
Numbering toolbar do not include such common styles as a., b., c. and
(i), (ii), (iii) etc.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 831304] [NEW] Nautilus fails to copy large file, despite sufficient disk space

2011-08-22 Thread Ingo Gerth
Public bug reported:

When I try to copy a 12 GB DV video file to my external hard disk, Nautilus
stops copying about half way, claiming there is not enough disk space
available. However, there actually is still more than enough free space.
Exact wording of the error message is: Error splicing file: File too large.

Since I do not have a bugzilla account for upstream, I'd appreciate it
if someone could forward this report for me. Cheers.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: nautilus 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.4
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-28.49-generic 2.6.35.11
