[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918583] [NEW] gedit:7954 - no such file/folder error

2012-01-19 Thread werner
Public bug reported:

When I edit a file, e.g.:

gksudo gedit /etc/fstab

Make some changes and when saving I see these errors:

(gedit:2223): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into
`/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create
file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.PWS47V': No such file or
directory

(gedit:2223): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of
`/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or
directory

Note that they don't relate to the file I am editing.

I had moved /home to a separate partition and then install a Xubuntu
11.10 to a new / partition and used the new home partition, ever since
I see these errors.

To create /home I used the instructions from here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918580] [NEW] System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I updated my 12.04 installation and noticed that in the System Settings
section that Appearance has changed its name to User Interface. That
name is a term that beginner users will not be familiar with and will
most likely avoid clicking. Appearance is a much better name and has
more meaning for the end user. These sorts of terms need to be avoided
if Ubuntu wants to target less techy users and portray itself as a user
friendly environment.

Bug description:
Tried using Gnome system monitor 3.2.1 on various older systems.
  Results as follows:
near zero utilization in 'system' and 'filesystem'
utilization as follows in 'processes' and 'resources', somewhat lower
utilization for processes.

Dual Xeon HT (Quad virtual cores) netburst (2x2.4GHz@400MHz HT) = aprox 35%,
8-12% weighted over all 4 cores
  AMD Athlon 64 3200 (1x2,0GHz@1000MT) = aprox 11-20%
  Intel P4 2,53 (1x2,53GHz@533MHz) netburst = aprox 16-20%
  Intel P4 (1x1,8GHz@400MHz) netburst = aprox 25-40%
  Intel P3 (1x933MHz@133MHz) coppermine = 99,7 to 100%

It seems to me that fully saturating an old coppermine CPU for resource
monitoring is a bit over the top,
  and 35% on a Xeon-server?

Using my laptop with C2D T7250 (2x2,0GHz@800MHz) the weighted

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 915468] Re: the unity-greeter keyboard's selection doesn't respect the user config

2012-01-19 Thread Timo Aaltonen
This is quite serious actually, since users might not notice the 'en'
icon on the top panel (I didn't). The fallback default should be
XKBLAYOUT from /etc/default/keyboard (= just use the xserver default),
and if the user has something set in accountsservice use that instead.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 857153]

2012-01-19 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Karl Tomlinson (:karlt) from comment #57)
Supporting the new methods for detecting settings is by definition new and
therefore not thoroughly tested. It seems reasonable to put this through
the same QA process as any new feature.

It's not a feature that's serious regression. the patch is on trunk for
a while and there's no any known regression. I suggest to ask for aurora
approval.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 914348] Re: Touchpad LED on Dell's laptop is not working

2012-01-19 Thread Martin Pitt
Indeed user processes cannot, and should not be able to, change sysctls.
First, they do not have the necessary privileges, and second, if you
have multiple users logged in at the same time, they would all try to
set the value concurrently, possibly to different values.

The usual approach to this kind of problem is to add an API to a system
service such as upower, i. e. an API to get and set the touchpad LED.
This API then gets a policykit restriction that only the currently
active user session can call it, similar to e. g. triggering a suspend.
For an example, you can look at org.freedesktop.upower.suspend in
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.upower.policy. Programs like
gnome-settings-daemon can then call this API as normal user, and the
system daemon is able to write the value to sysfs/the kernel, providing
proper separation of privileges and avoiding the race condition for
multiple users.

However, I would suggest to reconsider implementing this in gnome-
settings-daemon. It seems like a hardware design wart that this needs to
be controlled by software, but if it has to be done, I think it would be
a lot more robust and efficient to do it right in the kernel's touchpad
driver. Efficient because it avoids the whole enable device in the
kernel, send notification to userspace, react to it in g-s-d, send to
upower, write to sysfs, trigger it in the kernel loop, and robust
because it will also work for other desktop environments which do not
have gnome-settings-daemon (XFCE, KDE), in the lightdm greeter, gdm, and
so on.

If you decide for an implementation in upower anyway, I suggest talking
to Richard Hughes (hughsie) in #udev on freenode about it, as we do not
change the API of widely known system daemons in Ubuntu only (this would
only introduce long-term incompatibility and a large maintenance
overhead), so that this work can get accepted upstream. If you want to
go for an in-kernel implementation (which also should be quite a bit
smaller), I recommend talking to the kernel team how to get this
upstream, as I'm not familiar with that procedure.

Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 914665] Re: window hash table not created until screen_get is called

2012-01-19 Thread Rick Spencer
Thank you for the bug report. Since there seems to be a work around,
though hacky, and it's in an optional package, I set the important to
low.

window hash table not created until screen_get is called

Status in “libwnck” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I've found this bug using the wnck python bindings (python-wnck)
package, but the actual problem is in the libwnck library.

I have python code where I have a list of X11 window IDs from an
independant source. I want to get a Wnck window from these Ids. In
  poython, doing this:

  window = wnck.window_get(my_xwindow_id)

does not work (window_get returns None) until i call
wnck.screen_get_default(). This is because the window_hash table
does not get build until a screen is accessed.

libwnck./window.c lines 470-477 look like this:

  WnckWindow*
  wnck_window_get (gulong xwindow)
  {
if (window_hash == NULL)
  return NULL;
else
  return g_hash_table_lookup (window_hash, xwindow);
  }

A possible fix would be to build the window_hash if it doesn't exist.

  Screen only partially updates

Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have had this issue numerous times in gnome-terminal, but it's
intermittent, can be reproduced but not reliably.

When fast moving updates are made to the terminal window, sometimes it
doesn't update at all. I have observed:-

  * Terminal still showing old content (for example when switching from one irc
channel to another when using irssi inside gnu screen)
  * Terminal only updating partitally (a percentage of the screen draws (from
top to bottom) some of the screen updates and then stops part way down)
  * Square regions of terminal update (a small block might update but the rest
of the screen doesn't)

In most of these I can 'force' an update of the screen (for example in
irssi/screen I can press CTRL+L to force update). This isn't limited
to irssi/screen, it can happen if I just start a terminal and run 'ls
  -l'.

I cannot reproduce the behaviour in xterm.

It's difficult to get screenshots or photos of this happening because
when it happens, soon after it will update the screen. Starting apps
(like screenshot apps) will force the update.

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
There was a bug against virt-manager* where sending a reboot or
shutdown event to a client seemingly doesn't do anything. Turns out
that this only happens on the login screen, inside a session you get a
popup asking what to do after the power button has been pushed. So
something is wrong on the lightdm session, that prevents the popup
  from happening.

This happens on real hw as well; if you hit the power button while
looking at the login screen, nothing happens.

Title:
evolution new message count on frequently lags

Status in The Evolution Mail Calendaring Tool:
  Fix Released
Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
since some time ago (am now running 2.4.0) there seems to have been a rework
in
the imap code. mostly this is visible in the fact that on startup evo used to
block for a second or two while it read all of my imap folder statuses and
then
  displayed them all at once.

in the current version, it displays all of the folders first and you can see
them updating as it queries the server. this is 'imap', not 'imap4rev1'.

since the time of this change, the new mail count has been incorrect in
certain
situations (as if it's not being properly updated).

  example:

  1) go into evo to see 2 new messages in your inbox
  2) erase one of them. new message count falls to 1.
  3) quit evo quickly (like, press delete then ctrl+w in fairly rapid
succession)
  4) start evo again and notice that new message count is now 2 again.
  5) switch to another folder and back to inbox, still 2.
  6) click 'send/receive' and it drops to 1.

it doesn't happen all the time and it's fairly hard to characterise what makes
it happen and what doesn't but some things seem to make it work. for example,
it doesn't seem to happen if i quit via the window manager close button (have
to
use ctrl+w). it also doesn't seem to happen if you wait around inside evo and
do some stuff after deleting the message before closing.

the other strange thing is, even though the new message count on the
  folder says 2

# Inbox (2)

the new message count at the top correctly says 1:

  [ INBOX 117 total, 1 unread ]

anyway... i hope i've provided enough info that you can reproduce it
  for yourself.

btw: imap server is dovecot 0.99.11. using it over ssh.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918580] Re: System Settings 'User Interface' name is bad in 12.04

2012-01-19 Thread feasty
I see the comment but there doesn't appear to be any reason for it! I
think they're just not thinking of the non technical user. If my
girlfriend, her parents or my dad (all Ubuntu users but far from
technical) saw the term User Interface they wouldn't know what it was
and they certainly wouldn't click on it because it has the term
'Interface' in, which sounds technical and low level. They are quite
happy to click on a button that is labelled Appearence though as it
has more meaning to them. It's this sort of terminology that just puts
people off Linux and keeps its reputation as a techies playground. The
designrs should remember that people who aren't technical, especially
those who are older, are afraid that what ever they do on a computer is
going to break it and unfriendly names like that is just going to
intimidate more.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918636] [NEW] No way to select session when loggind in using 'Other'

2012-01-19 Thread Christoph Egger
Public bug reported:

If my account is listed in lightdm screen and I use that option,
selecting the session type (e.g. xmonad) wworks as expected. If logging
in as 'Other' - type username - type password and I select session
type when entering the username, it's back to default once I get to the
password screen. Selecting here a non-system-default session will not
take any effect.

So for correct functioning
a) the user selection made when entering the username needs to be preserved (or
the session type selection disabled there)
b) the session selected in the password entering stage needs to actually take
effect
c) If I use the 'entering username' way of login, my last selection should be
preserved

Using the most up-to-date release of Lubuntu, lightdm loops when it is

No feedback when purchase in previous Ubuntu version isn't available
  for this version

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  software-center-gtk3 trunk r2212, Ubuntu Ocelot

  1. In Ubuntu 11.04 or earlier, purchase an item in USC that isn't available
for Ocelot.
  2. Do a clean install of Ocelot.
  3. Launch USC.
  4. Choose File Reinstall Previous Purchases.
  5. Select the item.
  6. Choose Install.

  What happens:
  * Nothing visible.
  * At the terminal:

  2011-08-25 19:03:22,074 - softwarecenter.backend - ERROR - error in
_on_trans_finished 'Error: Package does not exist
Check the spelling of the package name, and that the appropriate repository

Transaction failed: None
   Package [dbus.String(u'vendetta-online')] isn't available

What should happen: I hadn't specified this at all. But probably something
like:
  4. Any item that isn't available in this version of Ubuntu has a No symbol
overlaid on the bottom left of its icon.
  5. The Install button isn't present.
  6. Clicking More Info takes you to a software item screen explaining that
the item is not available for this version of Ubuntu, and that you should
contact the vendor for an updated version.

#5 alone would be a minimal fix.

Function Wizard shows some function names in english others in german

demonstrated this bug to Björn Michaelsen at LibreOffice-Conference in
  Paris today.

This is severe, because in order to use the functions one must use
english function names for some functions and german function names
for other functions, but you don´t know for which function exactly
which language is to be used.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918678] [NEW] Constant Firefox crashes with Thai language installed

2012-01-19 Thread Stuart Bishop
Public bug reported:

Firefox was crashing regularly. The easiest way to trigger the crash was
to visit Launchpad.

One of the crash reports ( https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index
/bp-2433038f-2da9-4c48-8fd2-b2edd2120118) linked to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=608639, which indicated the
issue was triggered with Thai language installed.

Thai language support was not listed in Firefox, nor in the system
Languages settings. I did have some Thai support installed though, such
as Thai input. I installed Thai support fully using the system Languages
settings, and the crashes kept happening. I then uninstalled Thai
support using the system Languages settings and the crashes appear to
have stopped.

Selecting other session in login screen doesn't do anything

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I think this is in lightdm. This is from a live session, and may not
be indicative of a real installation.

For the last while I've been unable to change sessions from the login
screen. I will select a different desktop environment (gnome-shell,
Unity 2d, anything) and log in. It will just log me into a Unity (3d)
  session.

I notice that if I select a different session, type the username, and
press enter, the dot is back on the original Ubuntu setting instead
of my selected option. It seems like as soon as I press enter that my
  selection is erased and reverted.

I believe this is a regression because it used to work earlier in this
  cycle.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918228] Re: Unable to access Trash, SMB shares, computer://, network:// etc. or automount

2012-01-19 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report but that seems an issue due ppa use rather
than a bug on Ubuntu, you can try contacting ricotz to know if there is
any known issue with his ppa though

Title:
Unable to access Trash, SMB shares, computer://, network:// etc. or
  automount

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I'm running Ubuntu Oneiric 64 bit, with all -updates, -proposed,
-backports, -extra etc sources and also the gnome3-team ppa as well as
ricotz' gnome shell testing ppa enabled.

  I'm seeing the following problem:

I am able to mount/unmount volumes from the GNOME Disk Utility just
fine, but automounting the drives in Nautilus doesn't work. Neither
does accessing any of the virtual drives like trash://, computer://
network:// or any smb shares. The graphical error message simply says
action not supported (although all gvfs-related packages are
  installed).

I'm figuring this has to have something to do with a gvfs error, but
purging and reinstalling all gvfs- and nautilus-related packages
didn't remedy the situation. Unfortunately, I can't find any gvfs-
related logs to provide any error messages (where should I look?).
Using nautilus via gdb doesn't show any errors.

(Interestingly, mounting an external drive manually leads to it
showing up in nautilus under the Computer category and not under
  Devices as before.)

This is especially a pain in the ass because some programs like Deja
Dup seem to rely on gvfs information, so even if I mount my external
USB drive manually, Deja Dup will not recognize it and not start the
  backup.

I think this bug started appearing after a recent update from ricotz'
testing ppa, but I'm not sure and I'd rather not go through the
arduous process of rolling back to the stock packages if there's any
  other way to fix this.

Sorry I can't provide any more information right now. If you hint me
in the right direction I can probably provide more details.

2012-01-19 Thread Björn Michaelsen
Fixed in 3.5.0-beta2-2ubuntu3 for good with the removal of a split -l10n
source package.

Not reproducable in 1:3.4.5-0ubuntu1~ppa1 uploaded to
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ppa/ .

libreoffice 1:3.4.5-0ubuntu1~ppa1 will be uploaded identically (modulo
ubuntu version change) to oneiric-proposed, when the build finishes, it
clearly needs checking again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918678] Re: Constant Firefox crashes with Thai language installed

2012-01-19 Thread Stuart Bishop
I've reinstalled Thai support, and no crashes so far. Assuming I'm not
just being lucky, the work around is to install Thai language support,
uninstall, and install it a second time. This seems to fully reset Thai
language support and no longer triggers the crash. Thai language was
originally enabled under Natty before upgrading to Oneiric which could
explain how the odd state came to be.

Thai language support was not listed in Firefox, nor in the system
Languages settings. I did have some Thai support installed though,
such as Thai input. I installed Thai support fully using the system

Firefox kept crashing on lots of different pages. I tried creating a new
profile for Firefox and I also tried running it in safe mode, but it
still crashed.

Eventually I installed the firefox-gdb package so that I could try to
run the GDB debugger and find the problem. The backtrace says that
there's a segfault in AffixMgr::parse_file.

Here's the backtrace:

Title:
Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions

Status in The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP):
  Unknown
Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The tablet in overall seems to work correctly, with all pressure-
features working. But quite frequently, while drawing, GIMP seems to
wrongly read the coordinates of the stylus (as zeros, or negative
values?), resulting in frequent, random 'line-peaks' in the direction
of the left and upper image edges. With this bug it is hard to even
use the tablet, since these problems are very frequent (see the
  exemplary image attached).

The tablet works with no problems in MyPaint. The bug is reproducible
  in both Unity-2d and Unity-3d.

I also notice the CPU usage increasing dramatically during drawing
  with any brush.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Connect the Wacom Bamboo One tablet
  2. Open GIMP
  3. Start drawing longer strokes with any brush

  Expected result:
The brush stroke as intended by moving the stylus

  Actual result:
The brush stroke as intended with frequent, random line-strokes towards image
edges

System: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric (development branch)
GIMP version: 2.6.11 (package version: 2.6.11-2ubuntu3)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 918077] Re: 'Repeat Mode' loops MP4, MP3 files only twice, then stops

2012-01-19 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Oggs, AVI's affected as well. Apparently it's just MKV's that either
don't exhibit this or just manifest it differently.

Title:
'Repeat Mode' loops MP4, MP3 files only twice, then stops

Status in “gstreamer0.10” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
See Bug #907644 for a similar issue with MKV files.

With MP4 and MP3 files, with just one such file on the playlist and
looped (with repeat mode on), the file is played through twice with no
problem, then it just stops at the end. Restarting the video by
double-clicking on the playlist item works.

As in #907644, if you add another file (or another instance of the
same file) to the playlist and let it loop between the two, there's no
problem. But with the single file repeating the bug is 100%
  reproducible. Not reproducible with VLC.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Load an MP3 or MP4 in Totem.
  2. Set 'Repeat Mode' on.
  3. Let the file play through two rounds.

  What happens:
At the end of second play, the playing stops and does not start again by
itself.

  What I expect to happen:
For the file to repeat ad infinitum.

Title:
Empathy contact list defocuses on most keypresses

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: empathy

I'm running Maverick beta (last updated Sept 27th 2010) with Empathy
  2.32.0.

In what appears to be a regression from Lucid, I cannot control the
Empathy contact list by the keyboard. I would like to do the
  following:

  1. Press tab to change focus from the buddy list to status settings

  2. Select a status from the dropdown list (to be fair, this might not
  have been available in Lucid)

  3. Press enter while a contact is selected to open a chat window with
  that contact

Currently, while the status text box is focused, I can type a new
status and enter it, but I cannot open the dropdown menu. Pressing tab
in the status text box changes focus to the buddy list (rather than to
  the dropdown menu button).

The more serious problem is that, apparently, while the buddy list is
focused (e.g. a contact is highlighted) any key besides up and down
will defocus the application. I cannot press tab to go back to the
status text box, and I cannot press enter to open a chat window with
that contact. Even pressing letter or number keys will defocus the
  application.

This is very annoying for me as I primarily use the keyboard. I would
be happy to provide further information and some time debugging.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 883317] Re: 11.10 nm-applet menu cut off at screen edge

2012-01-19 Thread Philipp
I figured out this bug also affects the system menu.
When i do an update, that requires a reboot, then the german text for Restart
to complete updates(Neustarten um die Aktualisierungen anzuwenden) is much
longer, and it is cut off too.
I will make a Screenshot of it next time.

Bug description:
  Hi there,

I have some strange issues with Empathy. When I quit work I leave my
computer on for reasons not relevant to this bug-report. Before
leaving I manually close Empathy completely and lock gnome. When I get
back the following morning Empathy somehow has resurrected itself and
all kinds of chat windows are openend from people who think i'm online
(and then think i'm actively ignoring them). If i kill Empathy it
should stay dead until i manually start it myself.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/560575

  Ubuntu 11.04
  Empathy 2.34.0

  Regards,
  Fili
