[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1682542] Re: Add support for top bars on all monitors to allow for multi-monitor support in primary extensions - apps-menu, places-menu, topbar, etc
Agreed. Distinguishing between monitors serves no purpose. Like everyone else I have strong muscle memory to look to the top right of my screen when I want to see status indicators, or to look to the top to see the time, or to move my mouse to the top right to change the volume. This muscle memory has no concept of whether I am looking at my 'primary' monitor or not, and feels a half second of confusion each time I try to do one of these things on a second monitor, which is the hallmark of bad interface design. I think I'm subconsciously adapting to just not use the second monitor much, and that's a stupid outcome too. Of course indicators have nothing to do with the specific monitor they're on, but they have nothing to do with the primary monitor either, so why are they there? They're there to give quick visual and interactive access to certain frequently accessed information and functionality, quick enough that you apparently don't want to have to hit a few keypresses to get them. By the same logic you shouldn't have to drag your mouse over increasingly large screen real estate. Unity had it right in this regard. There should be just monitors, no primary or secondary. It's a pointless distinction, and whilst I accept it might be technically difficult to achieve given the current architecture of gnome-shell, to insist on it as a design decision is silly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1682542 Title: Add support for top bars on all monitors to allow for multi-monitor support in primary extensions - apps-menu, places-menu, topbar, etc Status in GNOME Shell: Incomplete Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: This issue will effectively be a regression in desktop usage once Ubuntu switches from Unity to Gnome Shell. Gnome Shell does not work well with multiple monitors unlike every other desktop environment except Budgie, which is switching away from GTK/Gnome to Qt with Budgie 11 due out in the next month or two. I reported it upstream last month but it does not appear to have much traction at the moment. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780078 " It would be nice if the primary included gnome-shell extensions, eg apps-menu and places-menu (and by extension the topbar) supported multi-monitor similar to how the bottom bar 'window-list' currently does. This was easy to achieve on Gnome 2 and now via MATE (out of the box) but there does not appear to be any way to do this with Gnome 3. This also leads to there not being a way to do this via 'Gnome Classic'. Even Windows finally (in W10) does this better out of the box than Gnome 3. BTW - Intel has supported IGP triple head since Ivy Bridge (2012) so it is very cheap to deploy a triple head system (~ $200 for 3 1080p monitors). AMD supports up to quad head in their IGPs. This has been blocking me from moving to Gnome 3 since its release and I finally decided to write a bug report about it. I have had all multi-monitor systems since prior to 2004. " And see comments #11 and #14 from Florian. " No, you don't want that in the extensions. Each extension is separate, so what you are asking for here is that apps-menu and places-menu *both* add top bars to non-primary monitors. We are definitely not going to add two or more stacked panels at the top. What you probably want instead is an option in gnome-shell to put top bars on non-primary monitors, and the aforementioned extensions to handle that case. " " Well, we've established what you want, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we'll implement it. So far the reasoning seems to be: - you really want the feature - GNOME 2 / Windows has it Unlike the case of the window list, nothing in the top bar (except for the app menu to some extent) is tied to a particular monitor, so there's a much weaker case here IMHO. (I'll also note that this wouldn't be a "cheap" option, but require work on lots of details throughout the stack - we'd need to figure out the overview (only include the activities button on the primary monitor? or allow an overview on any monitor?), get API to control the brightness of a particular monitor (rather than the built-in one), don't use "the monitor with the top bar" as indicator for the primary monitor in Settings, ...) [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1423773] Re: Gnome-Shell don't free ram when I change a wallpaper
I can reproduce this problem briefly in 18.04 (where the memory usage jumps dramatically), but after changing wallpapers 3-5 times the memory usage stops growing, or jumps back down to its original size. So I think there's probably still something to fix here in 18.04. But also, changing wallpapers is not something most users do very often. ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1423773 Title: Gnome-Shell don't free ram when I change a wallpaper Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Sorry for my bad english, here is the link to see the error by yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O53tt-6v81Y=youtu.be To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1423773/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

It is bundled with Qualcomm Atheros QCA-9377 (rev 30) 802.11ac wireless card. Currently I have running Ubuntu 16.10 with all security updates. Wireless is dropping constantly. I tried different GNU/Linux distributions but the result is either same or worse. I assume is something related to NetworkManager and eventually Systemd. The thing is that I loose signal at some point but the network manager indicates that I have connection. After toggling Airplane mode it manages to continue to work properly but I am loosing the list with wireless connections which are available to be. For some reason it starts to show that I am connected through cable, instead of wireless. The only two ways to resolve constant drops in the signal I found is to toggle Airplane mode or restart NetworkManager. Both results to wrong indication and disables me from choosing another network. ➜ ~ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 16.10 Release: 16.10 ➜ ~ apt-cache policy network-manager network-manager: Installed: 1.2.4-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 1.2.4-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1.2.4-0ubuntu1 500 500 http://bg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu yakkety/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1670031/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1764087] Re: Wrongly boots into low graphics mode
Thanks for the workaround to make wifi work - that could come in useful. I'm unsure whether your display info is relevant or not. As far as I am aware I only have one graphics controller/card/GPU integrated into the Processor - Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz × 4 and that is Intel® Ironlake Mobile with just the laptop screen as a monitor. Your output suggests 2 and/or 2 monitors? For completeness I add the following:- sudo lshw -c display *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@:00:02.0 version: 02 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:26 memory:f200-f23f memory:d000-dfff ioport:1800(size=8) memory:c-d -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1764087 Title: Wrongly boots into low graphics mode Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Description: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS Release: 16.04 Lenovo T410 with VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) Booting from latest kernel ThinkPad-T410 4.13.0-38-generic #43~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 14 17:48:43 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux goes into low graphics mode and also effects wi-fi connection insofar as it does not connect to my router. See the log file /home/vidar/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.8_155965261/configuration/1520710304064.log Meanwhile, the following messages are printed on stderr: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning: ignoring option MaxPermSize=256m; support was removed in 8.0 Gtk-Message: 11:31:25.572: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Gtk-Message: 11:31:25.619: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" The file it mentions contains: !SESSION Sat Mar 10 11:31:44 PST 2018 -- !ENTRY org.eclipse.equinox.launcher 4 0 2018-03-10 11:31:44.078 !MESSAGE Exception launching the Eclipse Platform: !STACK java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.eclipse.core.runtime.adaptor.EclipseStarter at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:381) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:424) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:357) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.invokeFramework(Main.java:626) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.basicRun(Main.java:584) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.run(Main.java:1438) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.main(Main.java:1414) `eclipse`, `eclipse-jdt` and `eclipse-platform` are all version 3.8.1-11. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1762818] Re: Regression: Upgrading from 17.10 to 18.04 reduces resolution available on monitor
A victim of some other fix. This regression can be prevented by adding amdgpu.dc=0 to the kernel command line. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1762818 Title: Regression: Upgrading from 17.10 to 18.04 reduces resolution available on monitor Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Symptom: booting 18.04 kernel reduces resolution available while 17.10 kernel (on 18.04) does not I have a 3 identical monitor setup - all at 2560x1600 native resolution. If I boot the current 18.04 kernel 4.15.0-13-generic then the third monitor does not have the native resolution available. If I reboot with the last 17.10 kernel 4.13.0-37-generic then all monitors have the native resolution available. On the video card the monitors are connected to HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI. On the monitors themselves the connectors are HDMI, DisplayPort and HDMI. (3rd monitor is using DVI to HDMI cable.) Xorg logs show identical EDID information between the kernels. 18.04's just decides to not make 2560x1600 available, having 2048x1080 or 1920x1200 as the highest. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1765141] Re: [regression] Full screen white flash from time to time (Wayland and X11)
I used X11 more often lately and faced the same bug, so it is not actually a Wayland only problem. It seems the flash occurs only in the evening. So my guess is that the bug is related to the Night Mode of Gnome that randomly deactivates itself for one frame. ** Summary changed: - [regression] Full screen white flash from time to time with Wayland + [regression] Full screen white flash from time to time (Wayland and X11) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1765141 Title: [regression] Full screen white flash from time to time (Wayland and X11) Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: New Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am using Ubuntu 18.04 with gnome shell on Wayland. From time to time, maybe every one or two hours, the desktop becomes white for a fraction of second. I guess it is just one frame (1/60 of second). It looks like a full filled rectangle of white color but it is so fast I cannot verify to be sure (the only solution I'm thinking of would be to have a fast recording camera pointed to my display). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1766103] [NEW] bionic: VPN not working at all
Public bug reported: VPN is completely busted on bionic-desktop (4/21/2018). In 17.10 my VPN was still working, "only" had to do a `killall nm-applet; nohup nm- applet &` to get the password prompt to show up. In bionic, at least that portion now works without work-around. However, I can't establish my VPN to my workplace at all. My VPN configuration in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Test seems rather basic: [connection] id=Test uuid=ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40 type=vpn autoconnect=false permissions=user:thomas:; [vpn] domain=XX.XXX gateway=vpn.XX.XXX password-flags=2 refuse-chap=yes refuse-eap=yes refuse-pap=yes require-mppe=yes user=Y service-type=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp [ipv4] dns=10.11.11.11; dns-search= method=auto never-default=true route1=10.11.0.0/16,10.11.31.31 [ipv6] addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy dns-search= method=ignore Here's the logs from syslog: Apr 22 10:29:18 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414558.0300] audit: op="connection-activate" uuid="ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40" name="Test" pid=1141 uid=1000 result="success" Apr 22 10:29:18 thomas-bionic gnome-shell[781]: JS ERROR: TypeError: item is undefined#012setActiveConnections/<@resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/status/network.js:1518:17#012setActiveConnections@resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/status/network.js:1515:9#012wrapper@resource:///org/gnome/gjs/modules/_legacy.js:82:22#012_syncVpnConnections@resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/status/network.js:1853:9#012wrapper@resource:///org/gnome/gjs/modules/_legacy.js:82:22 Apr 22 10:29:18 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414558.0445] vpn-connection[0x555885252640,ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40,"Test",0]: Started the VPN service, PID 2601 Apr 22 10:29:18 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414558.0631] vpn-connection[0x555885252640,ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40,"Test",0]: Saw the service appear; activating connection Apr 22 10:29:21 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414561.2896] settings-connection[0x55588511f440,ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40]: write: successfully updated (keyfile: update /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Test (ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40,"Test")), connection was modified in the process Apr 22 10:29:21 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414561.3008] vpn-connection[0x555885252640,ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40,"Test",0]: VPN connection: (ConnectInteractive) reply received Apr 22 10:29:21 thomas-bionic NetworkManager[507]: [1524414561.3095] vpn-connection[0x555885252640,ae916f15-2e8d-46b0-92d3-c2dece212c40,"Test",0]: VPN plugin: state changed: starting (3) Apr 22 10:29:21 thomas-bionic pppd[2613]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.7/nm-pptp-pppd-plugin.so loaded. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1766063] Re: mm (Myanmar / Burmese) for zawgyi keyboard layout
Thanks for your report and your patch! However, this is too late for Ubuntu 18.04, which will be released in a few days. Many users change xkb-data files to set up personal keyboard configuration, and we don't do stable release updates of this package unless absolutely necessary, since it would overwrite such changes. I see that it was included upstream, so the new Burmese layout variant will most likely be included in Ubuntu 18.10. ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Committed => Triaged ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => later ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Assignee: kokoye2007 (kokoye2007) => (unassigned) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766063 Title: mm (Myanmar / Burmese) for zawgyi keyboard layout Status in xkeyboard-config: Fix Released Status in xkeyboard-config package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in xkeyboard-config package in Arch Linux: New Status in xkeyboard-config package in CentOS: New Status in xkeyboard-config package in Debian: Fix Released Status in xkeyboard-config package in Fedora: New Status in xkeyboard-config package in Gentoo Linux: New Status in xkeyboard-config package in Unity Linux: New Bug description: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106169 New Keyboard Layout addition in Myanmar / Burmese --- New Keyboard Layout --- Added New Keyboard Layout - Burmese Zawgyi Keyboard This is similar to Burmese MM. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1766100] [NEW] Desktop keeps showing files that are no longer there
Public bug reported: Hours after downloading a few pdf files with Chrome into the Desktop and being done with them, I went to delete them. I was surprised to find a file called something.pdf.chdownload. These are the temporary files that Chrome creates while downloading the files, then it renames them to their final filename without the .chrdownload suffix when they are complete. All of the files had been downloaded completely and succesfully (I had actually opened all of them) so this file shouldn't exist. And indeed, when I went to download it, I got an error "Cannot move to trash. Delete it permanently?" (this is actually stupid in the first place: the reason why I'm getting this error, it turns out, is that the file does not exist, so it makes no sense to give me the option to permanently delete it, which will fail for the exact same reason). So I chose "delete", and got an error again, that the file could not be deleted. I retried several times and finally looked at "details" and found out that the source of the error was "no such file or directory". So, the file was not there. So why the fuck was it being shown on the desktop if it was no longer there? I can assume it might happen some rare times (it's a bug anyway) that you for some reason "miss" when a file ceases existing, and hence it is still falsely visible on the desktop. But there should come a point where Nautilus "realises" the file no longer exists and stops showing it. In other words, the contents of the desktop should be "refreshed" from time to time or on certain events. And trying to delete a file, triggering an error that says that the file doesn't fucking exist, should be such a case where you refresh the information and stop showing a file that doesn't exist. It's pathetic that you keep showing it forever until I kill and restart nautilus or fucking reboot. I'm sick of reporting such idiotic bugs on Nautilus. Ubuntu, for fuck's sake, switch to some better, decently maintained file manager. Nautilus is CRAP.
