Title:
external HDMI monitor is laggy on NV reverse PRIME system

Status in OEM Priority Project:
  New
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in xorg-server source package in Jammy:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Summary]
When the graphic mode is on-demand mode and plug in the monitor to HDMI port,
there are two issue occures:
  1. External monitor's screen is very laggy in external monitor mode only.
  2. External monitor's screen sometimes (~50%) will be blak in join display
mode.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Boot in OS
  2. Plug in the external monitor in HDMI port
  3. Find the cursor moving in external monitor is laggy

  [Additional information]
  Feedback from NV:

An NVIDIA driver built with the features needed to get rid of the laggy
monitor problem causes Xorg 1.21.1.3 to crash. There's a patch for Xorg to fix
the crash (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues/1275) and it
was first included in the 1.21.1.4 release.
Since the older X servers crash, NVIDIA deliberately does a version check in
the driver and enables these features for Xorg servers that are known to work,
i.e. 1.21.1.4 or higher.

This unfortunately prevents backporting the fix to 1.21.1.3.
Engineering has chosen this approach since a crash is worse than the
low FPS lag and the user might lose work merely by plugging/unplugging
displays. If it was about a performance degradation, slight
corruption, or something non-fatal, we wouldn't need to check Xorg
  version

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2011575] Re: Cursor used during log in after boot still on screen after log in on desktop

2023-03-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is/was a common issue on AMD systems. I think the 5.14 OEM kernel
here is missing this fix:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1344#note_932943

But if it's still happening in later kernels then it might be related

Title:
Windows do not open on screen or with long delay.

Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On login, clicking on 2nd hard drive icon and/or Files (nautilus)
there is a long delay in anything opening. Sometimes I can open a
Terminal, sometimes I can't. When application windows do open
promptly, they are often "off-screen" visible from the Activities
overview, but not on the workspace itself when "zoomed in" after
clicking on one of the windows.

This is happening on Lunar Lobster. Upgraded from a fresh install of
Kinetic Kudu with a fresh ISO downloaded today 9 March, 2023.

  I ran:

  sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-shell ubuntu-desktop gdm3

Reinstall completed successfully but problems persisted after a cold
  boot.

Interface has started behaving again for now, but this has happened
through multiple cold boots (reboot menu not reliably responsive
  either).

  **Expected Behavior:**

Click on application shortcut on the panel, application window opens
  in active workspace.

  **What Happened Instead:**

Clicked on app icon, spinning wheel or no response at all. Window
sometimes opens but is only visible through Activities overview.
Clicking on window in this view "zooms back in" and hides the window
  again.

Title:
[HP EliteBook 840 G8 Notebook PC, Realtek ALC245, Speaker, Internal]
No sound except loud crackling (popping) noise

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
New laptop with fresh installation of Xubuntu 22.04. Intel Tiger Lake-
LP audio controller. When playing any audio, the internal speaker
plays no sound except periodic loud crackling noise. The 3.5mm jack
does not work either, producing the same craclking noise alongside
some eletrical noise. HDMI audio skimmishly tested, but also gave no
sound. Curiously, USB headphone (along with microphone) works
  perfectly, also the internal microphone.

As attempts to fix the problem, I have tried the following separately, with
no avail:
  - Installing some Ubuntu OEM version of the 5.17 kernel
  - Updating to the v2.2 firmware from Sound Open Firmware Project
(thesofproject on github), reverted afterwards

I found exactly the same problem reported in the Fedora community:

https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?328627-HP-Elitebook-840-G8-Tiger-Lake-audio-only-produces-popping-sound=1860086

As the pre-installed Windows has been destroyed, no further test on
  Windows has been done.

Since USB headphone and internal microphone work, I think that there
is no problem on the Intel Tiger Lake-LP controller and its driver.
The bug probably lies elsewhere, like in the handling of ALC245 on
  this new laptop model.

Thank you very much for your time and effort in advance.

Title:
Can't connect to hotspot created on ubuntu

Status in wpa package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
We currently have older systems (18.04) with hotspot's and we will migrate to
22.04.
Anything work's fine, expect the hotspot.
The Hotspot will be created and is visible in the WLAN-List, but if the
security is set to "WPA & WPA2 Personal" we get the error message "Failed to
connect to the network".
If we change the Security to "WPA3 Personal" we get the error message
"Invalid Password", even if the password is correct.
As soon we remove the security (change it to "none"), we can connect with out
any problems.

We can reproduce it with a fresh installtion of the Ubuntu Server
22.04 and the following two commands:

  apt install network-manager

nmcli c add type wifi ifname wlp3s0 con-name Hotspot autoconnect yes
  ssid test-ap 802-11-wireless.mode ap 802-11-wireless.band bg
  802-11-wireless.mac-address "80:45:dd:f0:27:ba" wifi-sec.group ccmp
  wifi-sec.key-mgmt wpa-psk wifi-sec.pairwise ccmp wifi-sec.proto rsn
  wifi-sec.psk "test12345" ipv4.addresses 192.168.60.1/24 ipv4.method
shared && nmcli connection up Hotspot

We thought it could be similar to this issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpa/+bug/1958267
Because if we test it with 20.04 it worked fine, because 20.04 uses the
Version 2:2.9.0-21build1 as described in the Ticket.

  As @Sebastian Bacher suggested
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpa/+bug/1958267/comments/58), i
created a own report.
In the attachment is the requested log file.

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Night light turns on and off correctly (manually and automatically at
sunset/sunrise), but it has no effect on screen colour temperature. Altering
the colour temperature slider makes no difference. Changing display temperature

Behaviour is the same in Wayland and Xorg sessions.

all with this machine
  (Intel® Core™ i3-10100 CPU Intel CometLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630])

I have raised the issue on ubuntu forums,
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2481261 with no indication
of it being a problem also reported by other 22.10 users, so it may be

2023-03-14 Thread Rico Tzschichholz

Title:
  [SRU] libreoffice 7.4.6 for kinetic

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in libreoffice source package in Kinetic:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * LibreOffice 7.4.6 is in its sixth bugfix release of the 7.4 line:
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.4#7.4.6_release

   * Version 7.4.4 is currently released in kinetic. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.4.5 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.4.6
(that's a total of 74 bugs):
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.4.6/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.4.6/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs
   * 7.4.5 was an intermediate hotfix release with one bug fix which got
cherry-picked as 1:7.4.4-0ubuntu0.22.10.2

   * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU
a minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

  [Testing]

   * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

    * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
  https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_74/1717/

    * More information about the upstream QA testing can be found here:

  * Regression tests
    https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests
  * Feature tests
    https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Feature_Tests

   * Launchpad testing. The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests that were
run and verified as passing.
  * [amd64]

https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/results/autopkgtest-kinetic-ricotz-ppa/kinetic/s390x/libr/libreoffice/20230308_200234_9c534@/log.gz
   * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

  [Regression Potential]

   * A minor release with a total of 74 bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
  features were removed.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as
described above should provide reasonable confidence that no
  regressions sneaked in.

This version switches the yr.no backend to use met.no instead. Please note
that this backport is only meant as a compatibility layer. Where at all
possible, the newer libgweather 40 should be used as applications cannot
fully comply with the met.no ToS otherwise.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2011626] [NEW] missing entry in netplan

2023-03-14 Thread Salman Siddiqui
Public bug reported:

Server install missed "renderer: NetworkManager" line in
netplan/00-installer-config.yaml

this results in the network adapter is missing in the Network applet in
Gnome settings

Some gnome applications, including update script as reported by cockpit,
believe the system is offline

The fix is to add the missing line to the 00-installer-config.yaml and
then "netplan apply"

after this step, the network adapter appears in Gnome and all symptoms
of the system being offline disappeared.

  missing entry in netplan

Status in network-manager-applet package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Server install missed "renderer: NetworkManager" line in
  netplan/00-installer-config.yaml

this results in the network adapter is missing in the Network applet
  in Gnome settings

Some gnome applications, including update script as reported by
cockpit, believe the system is offline

The fix is to add the missing line to the 00-installer-config.yaml and
  then "netplan apply"

after this step, the network adapter appears in Gnome and all symptoms
of the system being offline disappeared.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1918044] Re: (Update libgweather to 3.36.2) Weather forecast and info is not available anymore

2023-03-14 Thread Noname
Good day.
As I understand, I should somehow change libgweather to 3.36.2. Is there any
instruction manual for that? I can see some tarball in repo
https://download.gnome.org/sources/libgweather/3.36/libgweather-3.36.2.tar.xz
but have no idea how to proceed.

The weather service provider retired their old API.

  ==
  Version 3.36.2
  ==

This version switches the yr.no backend to use met.no instead. Please note
that this backport is only meant as a compatibility layer. Where at all
possible, the newer libgweather 40 should be used as applications cannot
fully comply with the met.no ToS otherwise.

  [Test case]

  - gnome-weather shows the weather forecast
  - gnome-shell shows the weather forecast in the calendar menu

  [Regression potential]

  - Weather forecast is totally broken now and can't be more broken.

Typing a filename in a nautilus window, and the letters are not in the

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On my Lenovo Yoga 260 I have this annoying problem. At first I
thought it was just my typing, but after carefully testing it, I find
it is not my typing. You need to type the characters fairly quickly,
but often when you do, they come on the search bar in a different
order than you typed them. For example, I have a directory called
LaserTag and so when I want to find it among all the others in my
directory, I open the nautilus window and start typing Laser, but what
is printed in the search bar is Lsaer. This may happen in some other
programs. I am not sure about that, but it is at least most apparent
in nautilus, and reproducible. For example, I did the test twice and
  got Lsaer twice just now.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969315] Re: text in torrent info tabs change after opening it to gibberish

2023-03-14 Thread fprietog
As a temporary workaround I've installed packages "transmission-
common_4.0.1-1" and "transmission-gtk_4.0.1-1" from Debian sid
(unstable) and both works flawlessly in Ubuntu 22.10 so this bug is gone
using these packages.

I hope these packages will be picked for Ubuntu 23.04 publish.

Note: the Debian package "transmission-gtk_4.0.1-1" have a broken
dependence in Ubuntu 22.10. It requires "libevent-2.1-7 (>=
2.1.8-stable)" but in Ubuntu 22.10 the package is named
"libevent-2.1-7a". It's not a problem because "transmission-gtk_4.0.1-1"
is installed marked as a broken package, but it works flawlessly.

Title:
Windows do not open on screen or with long delay.

Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Clicking on window in this view "zooms back in" and hides the window
  again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2011611] [NEW] [FFe] Include Tiling Assistant in the default install

2023-03-14 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

We want to add better support for tiling in the ubuntu desktop, while
we're looking forward to implement it in mutter natively, at the current
state the best option we have is that of using an extension.

Tiling assistant is a well upstream-supported extension that is already
in ubuntu universe (while MIR in progress at #2007710) and that provides
more tiling features and an easier way to manage tiles.

We propose to keep the tiling assistant extension disabled by default,
but available for being enabled (and tuned) from gnome-control-center.

In particular the extension allows to:
 - Do quarter-tiling of windows
 - Dispose tiles side-to-side and top-bottom
 - Select window to be tiled in empty slots
 - Organize tiles in windows groups that override focus behavior

** Affects: gnome-shell-extension-tiling-assistant (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Medium
 Status: New

Bug description:
using 0.1-0~5~natty1 on mostly up to date natty system, when running
the indicator-multiload with with just cpu monitor and the default
update interval of 500 milliseconds, I see (via top) that compiz usage
when generally idle goes from either 0 or 1% of CPU to 3 or 4% of CPU.
Reducing the update interval does seem to have an affect.

  I realize that
  a.) top is not scientific
b.) there could be something I'm missing here
c.) saying "300%" (in the subject) is not scientific

Bug description:
After updating 21.10 to 22.04 the app-indicator starts "blinking" as
if the positions of the indicators constantly have to be redrawn.

Hovering the mouse over the multiload indicator shows a menu that is
  constantly changing size and position.

Closing the app removes the indicator and the indicator area stays
  calm again.

With a Mate desk, the icons fails to load and raise up cpu activity; had to set
them off into Mate params.
Seems to be the exact same package fault as reported here.

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Recent versions of NetworkManager have a feature enabled by default to
use a random MAC address when scanning for available Wi-Fi networks
for privacy. My understanding is that the spoofed MAC address is not
used when actually connecting to a network.

This feature was disabled in Ubuntu 17.10 because it broke scanning
with some Wi-Fi drivers. My understanding is that there is a bug in
some drivers when attempting to change the MAC address. See LP:
  #1681513.

The bug might not be as big of an issue with the latest version of
NetworkManager because
  1) There are helpful commits like this (it was not backported to 17.04):
  https://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=46d53e1
  2) It is also possible now to selectively disable Wi-Fi MAC Randomization for
specific drivers.
  https://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=b869d9

However, I'm really hesitant to re-enable this feature as long as
  A) we don't know for sure which drivers are affected,
  B) and more importantly, there is no GUI way to turn the feature on or off.
Asking users to edit config files isn't very nice.

The MAC Address Randomization feature is really nice (Windows 10 has a
similar feature) but I think we need a GUI on/off switch in Settings >
  Wi-Fi or Settings > Privacy.

No. I said that you can do that if you are on an Ubuntu version > 20.04.
Given the version you actually are on, instead I would suggest that you
reinstall im-config:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall im-config

That's because the error message indicates that the installation of im-
config is not complete. Maybe you tried to partly uninstall it.

"E: Script for none not found at run_im."

Well, "script for none" should be there:

$ ls -1 /usr/share/im-config/data | grep none
78_none.conf
78_none.rc

and a reinstall ought to restore those files.

Or you can keep your return at the top of the file. That won't hurt if
you don't use any input method.

> The im-config package could not be removed without removing
> gnome-control-center

That's true, and the reason is that language-selector-gnome depends on
im-config. I should probably relax that to a recommends.

> except the strange fact that this file was not removed when im-config
> was updated during the normal "sudo apt update" procedure at some point

Not strange at all, actually, since you are on bionic.

Changing ~/.xinputrc to e.g. xim makes no difference, so gdm3 prevents

Bug description:
  [ Impact]

glib is not aware of snap confinement and this causes the internal
logic to decide when to use portals to not work as designed. One
important case is the gsettings backend, which should use a keyfile
when confined rather than using dconf. When using a fully confined
desktop this is required, as dconf is not suitable for sharing between
  snaps.

This has been fixed in glib main:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/merge_requests/3020

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Install gnome-calculator snap:
  $ snap install gnome-calculator
  2. Disconnect gsettings interface:
  $ snap disconnect gnome-calculator:gsettings
  3. Run gnome-calculator
  4. Change mode from basic to advanced
  5. Close and re-open gnome-calculator

  Expected result:
Mode change remembered on second run. gnome-calculator settings written to
~/snap/gnome-calculator/current/.config/glib-2.0/settings/keyfile

  Observed result:
Mode change not remembered on second run, errors shown in console about
accessing dconf:
  (gnome-calculator:1031938): dconf-CRITICAL **: 14:08:56.034: unable to create
file '/run/user/1000/snap.gnome-calculator/dconf/user': Permission denied.
dconf will not work properly.

[ Where problems could occur ]

  - New bug introduced in glib causing a crash.
  - Security issue introduced in glib due to accessing snapctl.
  - Unexpected behaviour change when running snaps with updated glib.

So, you are saying that with this version I don't need the file
/etc/profile.d/input-method-config.sh and can simply remove it? In that case,
yes, there is nothing to report, except the strange fact that this file was not
removed when im-config was updated during the normal "sudo apt update"
procedure at some point.

Title:
  im-config configuration ignored with gdm3

Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in im-config package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After having logged in via gdm3, the IM related environment variables
  are always set like this:

  $ env | grep -E '_IM|XMOD'
  QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
  XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus

Changing ~/.xinputrc to e.g. xim makes no difference, so gdm3 prevents
all other IM frameworks but IBus from working.

This problem seems to be similar to bug #1594681 (which was fixed).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2011313] Re: gnome-control-center crashes after launch

2023-03-14 Thread Mark Smith
Ahaha so ubuntu-settings was rolled out into Lunar overnight NOT
gnome-control-settings.
I had forgotten that I had originally tagged the wrong app - in fact, I'm not
going to have to go and look up the difference between them :)

So - false alarm - It's not ready yet :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720250] Re: im-config configuration ignored with gdm3

2023-03-14 Thread Tigran Aivazian
@Gunnar

1. I am still on Ubuntu 18.04.6. I know it sounds strange, but in the
past 5-6 years I was so busy, that I was upgrading only the components I
actually actively use in my research work, namely Wolfram Mathematica,
python (with all scientific modules) etc. But yes, at some point I will
need to switch. I never "upgrade", but always install from scratch and
then spend several days tweaking the system to my liking. The reason I
didn't upgrade to Ubuntu 20 is that I really disliked the idea of using
snap. I am used to having a full control over every single instruction
my CPUs are executing and snap somewhat distances the user of the system
from what is happening inside, imo.

2. The im-config package could not be removed without removing gnome-
control-center, which would be extremely inconvenient. So, no, it is
still installed. I would gladly remove it, but because of this
dependency I had to keep it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1966905] Re: Memory access errors in gnome-shell from accountsservice

2023-03-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The #1 gnome-shell crash in 23.04 is currently:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/fa3beeb1c25d862ecb2a0900c2b2519503a6109d

which actually sounds like this bug. See also bug 2011429.
