[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037191] [NEW] Lockscreen sometimes doesn't render
Public bug reported: Sometimes when I unlock my laptop by opening the lid, the touchscreen just doesn't render. This renders the system completely frozen until I go into a TTY and run "sudo loginctl unlock-sessions". But that's not the real problem. The real problem is that while the lock-screen doesn't render, *everything* else does. This means that while I wasn't logged in, Firefox and all other open applications were completely visible. This is obviously a big issue if one has sensitive information open. There does not seem to be a reliable way to reproduce this, it just happens sometimes. So far, I've experienced this twice, once on 23.04 and once on the 23.10 beta. There are however, some really suspicious error messages in the logs: Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: == Stack trace for context 0x564e3e5286b0 == Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #0 564e3e6415e8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1809 (3e69d1677920 @ 73) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #1 564e3e641558 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1941 (3e69d1677e20 @ 43) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #2 564e3e6414d8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1931 (3e69d1677dd0 @ 28) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #3 564e3e641448 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21 (2f81e37d060 @ 48) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: == Stack trace for context 0x564e3e5286b0 == Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #0 564e3e6415e8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1812 (3e69d1677920 @ 124) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #1 564e3e641558 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1941 (3e69d1677e20 @ 43) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #2 564e3e6414d8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1931 (3e69d1677dd0 @ 28) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #3 564e3e641448 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21 (2f81e37d060 @ 48) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: == Stack trace for context 0x564e3e5286b0 == Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #0 564e3e6415e8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1988 (3e69d1677fb0 @ 112) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #1 564e3e641558 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1942 (3e69d1677e20 @ 58) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #2 564e3e6414d8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1931 (3e69d1677dd0 @ 28) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #3 564e3e641448 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21 (2f81e37d060 @ 48) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: == Stack trace for context 0x564e3e5286b0 == Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #0 564e3e641710 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/environment.js:112 (2f81e37d600 @ 43) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #1 564e3e641678 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/environment.js:297 (2f81e37dce0 @ 19) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #2 564e3e6415e8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1987 (3e69d1677fb0 @ 176) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #3 564e3e641558 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1942 (3e69d1677e20 @ 58) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #4 564e3e6414d8 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/keyboard.js:1931 (3e69d1677dd0 @ 28) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #5 564e3e641448 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/init.js:21 (2f81e37d060 @ 48) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: == Stack trace for context 0x564e3e5286b0 == Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #0 564e3e6417e0 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/environment.js:289 (2f81e37dc40 @ 39) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: #1 564e3e641710 i resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/environment.js:115 (2f81e37d600 @ 91) Sep 23 17:31:26 user-83BV gnome-shell[2000]: Object .Gjs_ui_keyboard_Keyboard (0x564e41dbc4f0), has been already disposed — impossible to get any property from it. Public bug reported: Since deploying transmission-daemon on Ubuntu 22.04 I've noticed a regular memory leak I'm not sure where or when, but it does appear the bug has been fixed upstream: https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/3077 Required Information: 1) # lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS Release:22.04 2) # apt-cache policy transmission-daemon transmission-daemon: Installed: 3.00-2ubuntu2 Candidate: 3.00-2ubuntu2 Version table: *** 3.00-2ubuntu2 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3/4) Application behavior is normal, and working as expected, with the exception of the memory leak. I've been using scheduled restarts to get around it. See pmap output below, it shows the process currently using nearly 2GB of memory while running no torrents & being alive for 1 days, 16 hours. # pmap $(pgrep -u debian-transmission) | sort -hk 2 170: /usr/bin/transmission-daemon -f --log-error 55e93cf7 4K rw--- transmission-daemon 55e93cf71000 4K rw--- [ anon ] 7fe36bfff000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c5bf9000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c63fa000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c6c1 4K - legacy.so 7fe3c6c15000 4K rw--- legacy.so 7fe3c6c16000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c7417000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c7c18000 4K - [ anon ] 7fe3c8428000 4K r libffi.so.8.1.0 7fe3c8429000 4K - libffi.so.8.1.0 7fe3c842a000 4K r libffi.so.8.1.0 7fe3c842b000 4K rw--- libffi.so.8.1.0 7fe3c843e000 4K r libresolv.so.2 7fe3c843f000 4K rw--- libresolv.so.2 7fe3c8446000 4K r libkeyutils.so.1.9 7fe3c8447000 4K r libkeyutils.so.1.9 7fe3c8448000 4K rw--- libkeyutils.so.1.9 7fe3c845e000 4K - libtasn1.so.6.6.2 7fe3c845f000 4K r libtasn1.so.6.6.2 7fe3c846 4K rw--- libtasn1.so.6.6.2 7fe3c85c 4K r libgpg-error.so.0.32.1 7fe3c85c1000 4K rw--- libgpg-error.so.0.32.1 7fe3c85c4000 4K r libbrotlicommon.so.1.0.9 7fe3c85c5000 4K r-x-- libbrotlicommon.so.1.0.9 7fe3c85e5000 4K r libbrotlicommon.so.1.0.9 7fe3c85e6000 4K rw--- libbrotlicommon.so.1.0.9 7fe3c860 4K r libsasl2.so.2.0.25 7fe3c8601000 4K rw--- libsasl2.so.2.0.25 7fe3c860d000 4K - libkrb5support.so.0.1 7fe3c860e000 4K r libkrb5support.so.0.1 7fe3c860f000 4K rw--- libkrb5support.so.0.1 7fe3c8612000 4K r-x-- libcom_err.so.2.1 7fe3c8613000 4K r libcom_err.so.2.1 7fe3c8614000 4K r libcom_err.so.2.1 7fe3c8615000 4K rw--- libcom_err.so.2.1 7fe3c8641000 4K - libk5crypto.so.3.1 7fe3c8642000 4K r libk5crypto.so.3.1 7fe3c8643000 4K rw--- libk5crypto.so.3.1 7fe3c8644000 4K rw--- [ anon ] 7fe3c870 4K - libkrb5.so.3.3 7fe3c8792000 4K r libgmp.so.10.4.1 7fe3c8793000 4K rw--- libgmp.so.10.4.1 7fe3c87d9000 4K rw--- libnettle.so.8.4 7fe3c881f000 4K - libhogweed.so.6.4 7fe3c882 4K r libhogweed.so.6.4 7fe3c8821000 4K rw--- libhogweed.so.6.4 7fe3c8bb6000 4K rw--- libunistring.so.2.2.0 7fe3c8cec000 4K - libgcrypt.so.20.3.4 7fe3c8cf6000 4K rw--- [ anon ] 7fe3c8d0 4K r libcap.so.2.44 7fe3c8d01000 4K rw--- libcap.so.2.44 7fe3c8d1f000 4K - liblz4.so.1.9.3 7fe3c8d2 4K r liblz4.so.1.9.3 7fe3c8d21000 4K rw--- liblz4.so.1.9.3 7fe3c8d4b000 4K r liblzma.so.5.2.5 7fe3c8d4c000 4K rw--- liblzma.so.5.2.5 7fe3c8d4d000 4K r libbrotlidec.so.1.0.9 7fe3c8d59000 4K r libbrotlidec.so.1.0.9 7fe3c8d5a000 4K rw--- libbrotlidec.so.1.0.9 7fe3c8e2a000 4K r libzstd.so.1.4.8 7fe3c8e2b000 4K rw--- libzstd.so.1.4.8 7fe3c8e3a000 4K - liblber-2.5.so.0.1.11 7fe3c8e3b000 4K r liblber-2.5.so.0.1.11 7fe3c8e3c000 4K rw--- liblber-2.5.so.0.1.11 7fe3c8e96000 4K - libldap-2.5.so.0.1.11 7fe3c8e99000 4K rw--- libldap-2.5.so.0.1.11 7fe3c8eeb000 4K - libgssapi_krb5.so.2.2 7fe3c8f02000 4K r libpsl.so.5.3.2 7fe3c8f03000 4K rw--- libpsl.so.5.3.2 7fe3c8f8f000 4K - librtmp.so.1 7fe3c8f9 4K r librtmp.so.1 7fe3c8f91000 4K rw--- librtmp.so.1 7fe3c8fb1000 4K r libidn2.so.0.3.7 7fe3c8fb2000 4K rw--- libidn2.so.0.3.7 7fe3c8fdc000 4K rw--- libnghttp2.so.14.20.1 7fe3c921e000 4K - libz.so.1.2.11 7fe3c921f000 4K r libz.so.1.2.11 7fe3c922 4K rw--- libz.so.1.2.11 7fe3c92de000 4K - libsystemd.so.0.32.0 7fe3c92e6000 4K rw--- libsystemd.so.

The screen freezes when I switch a running video into fullscreen mode. It happens with Gnome Totem, VLC, Firefox, so the issue is not connected to a certain app. I can hear the audio playing in the background while the video output gets stuck. The keyboard keeps working but switching to another app via keyboard doesn't work because the screen keeps stuck with the video. Way to reproduce: 1) Boot Ubuntu 2) Close lid and let the laptop go to sleep mode 3) Open the lid and login 4) Start a random video on Youtube/VLC/Totem 5) Switch to fullscreen -> Immediate freeze of the screen Workaround after the video froze: 1) Press ESC key (As if you would usually leave the fullscreen mode, however, the screen will stay stuck) 2) Close the lid 3) Wait until the laptop goes into sleep mode 4) Open the lid and login again Step 1) is necessary to leave the fullscreen before going to sleep. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037121] Re: Freeze when going full screen while watching video
well I am using "Unity" and the other seems to be using "Gnome" this is the only other reported instance in the last year that is similar to whats happening and nothing really shows in logs so no idea what the issue is has been happening all year from kernel 6 - 6.4 pretty sure it did not happen with 5.18 still deciding if I should roll back kernel to 5's or try 6.5 on next reboot to see if its kernel related or mesa / some other update related but then my VR headsets will break again going back to 5's I can trigger it every-time so if their are any commands to run for debugging let me know other things that are in the logs when it happen are connected, or using the destroy(), dispose(), or remove() vfuncs. Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users. ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2037121 Title: Freeze when going full screen while watching video Status in Mutter: New Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi. Otherwise after sleep and logging in again the screen gets stuck again immediately because the video is continued in fullscreen. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037121] Re: Freeze when going full screen while watching video
Hi. Would you mind clicking the button "This bug affects you"? This way the issue gets more attention. Meanwhile, it seems I found a workaround. I installed an extension [0] which disables unredirect fullscreen windows in gnome-shell and so far the freeze has not happened again. Maybe you wanna give it a try too. Still, this is something that needs to be fixed. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2000644] Re: switching workspaces with shortcut sometimes freezes screen
I see the same on Jammy, like the others it is reproducible easily by hitting the meta key and exiting from there in any way (hit ESC, select anything to start, ...). Sadly setting fixed workspaces (10) did not work around the issues for me, like it did for others. Occasionally (seems to depend if this issue races with something else as it seems more likely if the system has more apps running and me doing more things) I also get the stuck-desktop experience out of that. Usually starting with the mouse not being able to click everything anymore and a while after with a totally stuck desktop (not even ctrl-alt-f# gets me out anymore). That "stuckness" if it is still phase-I (mouse can't clock it all) sometimes resolves itself after a few minutes - no log entries in journal when that un-stucking happens. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2000644 Title: switching workspaces with shortcut sometimes freezes screen Status in GNOME Shell: New Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The bottom panel with dots to show which workspace you are on when switching with ctrl+alt+arrow sometimes doesn't disappear and gets stuck in a half faded or not faded state. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2013042] Re: Lock screen wallpaper vanishes (goes black) if a second monitor is plugged in/out
Confirmed in Ubuntu 23.04. The issue happens on my external monitor (2560x1440@60Hz) set as primary monitor and located above the laptop's internal FullHD display (both physically and virtually). Background with no elements on it is only displayed on my secondary monitor (laptop screen when external monitor is plugged in) when lock screen is displayed.
