[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1439640] [NEW] click packages not recognised as .ar archives

2015-04-02 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

the new .click package format is a .ar file containing some tar.gz

Bug description:
  [Impact]
After upgrading from Maverick to Natty, I can no longer use the Super
(windows) key in Virtual Machine Manager. Previously, as long as I had the
Virtual Machine Manager console window in the foreground, I could press the
Super key and the start menu would pop up. Since upgrading to Natty, this no
longer works, and the search box appears in the upper left.

  Also see bug #934921

  [Test Case]
  (1) Install virt-manager and qemu-system, create and boot a virtual machine
  (2) while in the virtual machine, press the Super key
Expected Result: the super key acts inside the VM
Actual Result: the super key acts in the host and the Unity Dash is displayed

  [regression Potential]
This patch plays with key grabs and ungrabs: the most likely potential for
regression is (a) the existing grabs continue and no fix obtains or (2) the
grab is not resumed when returning control from the VM and the Super key does
not invoke the Unity Dash.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1288163] [NEW] window z-order not intuitive when mouse wheel scrolling over launcher icon

2014-03-05 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

open several windows of one application type (gnome-terminal is good, but
anything will do)
hover over the launcher icon and use the mouse wheel to scroll between them,
raising windows one after another, scroll back and the sequence is not reversed.
rock the wheel back and forth one click at a time and it will alternate between
one window and each of the others in turn.
I would expect that scrolling the wheel would pop a window from the top of the
stack to the very bottom, scrolling the other way would pull windows off the
bottom of the stack and put them on the top, that way window switching acts
like a ring. Currently it seems to push the current window to top-1 then does
some hard to describe sequence to pull others up in turn, it isn't reversable,
so if you scroll through a lot of windows, go past the one you want and go back
one, you don't get to the thing you wanted.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1087873] Re: lens privacy feature does not work on all lenses

2013-11-21 Thread Alan Bell
the setting has changed in 13.10, it is now a declarative part of the .scope
file. Online searching lenses have to declare themselves as being online lenses
by using the RemoteContent=true flag in the .scope file. If that is set then
those lenses won't be queried when the privacy flag is set. This is now
documented in the tutorial.
http://developer.ubuntu.com/scopes/tutorial/
Please note that the default is false which is bug 1250134 so that a lens
author who does not include that line will automatically be assumed to be a
local lens and will be queried when the flag is set to local results only - so
by default online lenses will still ignore the flag - but it is now declarative
and external to the code of the lens, so this bug is fixed in Saucy.

In the system settings privacy area check the box to not return results from

Install unity-lens-github from the extras repo
Observe a fully functional github searching lens.

By default lenses don't do anything with the privacy flag. They have
to be specially coded to look for it, and it is undocumented. There
are lenses getting into the distribution that don't respect the flag.

Maybe the ARB should check lenses observe the setting before allowing them
into extras.
Maybe the setting should be replaced with a more functional alternative that
doesn't require lenses to be modified - so it won't send them
global-search-change events so the lens *can't* send your global queries to the
internet because it doesn't see them happening.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1086152] [NEW] mouse keys lacks acceleration

2012-12-03 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

the mouse keys setting in the pointing and clicking tab of universal access
preferences allows you to control the mouse cursor using the numeric keypad.
This moves really really slowly, one pixel at a time. Using the xkbset command
it is possible to adjust the speed and rate of acceleration to the max speed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 970826] Re: Can not select desktop environment using keyboard arrows

2012-10-23 Thread Alan Bell
works OK with tab and shift tab to move the cursor position around and
space to select. The trick is that the last item in the list is OK -
which may be off screen. Not an a11y issue (screen reader is perfectly
happy to read off-screen items).

Bug description:
  indicator-messages got updated, introducing a new libmessaging-menu
api (deprecating the old libindicate library) which should make
  application developper's life easier.

The indicator work is done and the library is ready and we started
  porting applications

The current stack is being tested in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
  desktop/+archive/ppa/

  It includes
  - indicator-messages
  - gwibber
  - indicator-telepathy
  - thunderbird (soon, work is being finished)

which is what we consider the minimal set for landing the feature

for quantal we will add those soon:
  - pidgin
  - xchat-indicator
  - evolution-indicator

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059073] Re: dual screens flip to mirrored screens shortly after logging in

2012-10-02 Thread Alan Bell
it *might* be triggered by performing activity on the smaller laptop
screen, today I logged on and was happily doing stuff on the external
monitor then moved a window across to the laptop screen, typed something
and it flipped, the end of the xorg.0.log is:

[60.825] (II) PM Event received: Capability Changed
[60.825] I830PMEvent: Capability change
[ 166.920] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor SEC, prod id 12869

[ 166.920] (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: Ignoring tiny 0x1107 mode
[ 166.920] (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: Ignoring tiny 0x1100 mode

[ 167.493] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1408x768 stride 5632,

so here there is the normal PM Event received: Capability Changed at
around 60 seconds, but it is at 166 seconds that the display flipped to
mirrored.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1059073] Re: dual screens flip to mirrored screens shortly after logging in

2012-10-01 Thread Alan Bell
not sure what to add really, I think it only happens on the first login from a
cold boot (that seems to be the only way I can reproduce it now) seems I am not
the only person with this issue
http://askubuntu.com/questions/126455/ubuntu-12-04-dual-monitor-reset-bug
I have tried deleting the monitors.xml and setting up the screens again, makes
no difference, still flips to mirrored with that capability changed message
nearly 60 seconds into the xorg.0.log.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 954352] Re: Enable wayland backend

2012-05-03 Thread Alan Bell
I have successfully tested the code in darxus's ppa and it works great
for the regular desktop and also allows GTK clients to run in the weston
compositor. Would be rather smashing to get this in to Quantal from the
start.

Wayland has one released version, 0.85, which is in the precise
  archives: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wayland/

I'm told gtk 3.4 is (and will remain) compatable with it. Since gtk

able to use some gtk applications via wayland is this build flag.

2012-05-01 Thread Alan Bell
it is fixed in some future version of rhythmbox with a different layout.
It won't get fixed in 12.04 without the fix I suggested or some other
fix. I am quite happy to make a patch that addresses the problem, or we
can live with it for 5 years of LTS support.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 811475] Re: Descender letters (g j p q y) get their tail cut off in current song

2012-03-28 Thread Alan Bell
it has apparently been worked around in upstream rhythmbox now in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668262
I don't think that is a fix in the GTK ellipsize method, but it doesn't affect
the new rhythmbox layout that we don't have yet. I guess we live with it until
12.10 or patch it now and it will look nice in 12.04.

Bug description:

Further to Bug report #964685 - I am advised that the following
  behaviour is caused by Compiz.

  1. Start live cd - click desktop to change background to suitable
colour. Facility to maximise window using Alt F8 has is greyed out -
needs to re restored to meet accessibility standards - and should be
working in the beta. This accessibility feature is present in 10.04.4
through to 11.10 (verified today) - and should still be present in
12.04. It should not have been removed or deprecated under Gnome
shell/3 or Unity - or for testing purposes.

Issue visible in screen print - attached.

Issue affects multiple windows from Boot of live CD and through
Install process and in installed system.

Numerous people with visual and neurodiveristy disabilities need the
ability to maximise these windows to allow concentration on single
  task with minimal image/background noise.

Window sizes may be presented inline with branding guidelines - but
they should retain accessibility feature for those who need it and
require it. It is acceptable for maximise option to be greyed out
provided alternate Alt F8 is available. Presently basic accessibility
  standards compromised.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 966524] Re: control center window is not manually resizeable

2012-03-27 Thread Alan Bell
It isn't compiz. Compiz is the compositing window manager that puts all the
windows on the screen. Each gnome application will create one or more GTK
windows and by default the resizeable property is set to true,
gnome-control-center sets it's resizeable property to false because it sizes
itself according to it's content rather than allowing the user to resize it.
http://developer.gnome.org/pygtk/2.22/class-gtkwindow.html#method-gtkwindow--set-resizable
Gnome-control-centre has many panes, the appearance pane is just one of them,
you will see the window resize itself as you move between them. Ubiquity the
installer also probably demands to set it's own dimensions, which is
particularly annoying on the map page, but that is two separate issues, one in
gnome-control-centre and one in ubiquity. Neither are a compiz issue, it is
just doing what the applications ask it to do.

Libreoffice has very poor default style settings, such as headings,
colours, font selections etc. We need to get these fixed to make it a
better, easier to work with application.

Part of the Ubuntu offering is about excellent defaults, so this
  really needs doing.

I think there are 3 things that need particular attention:

Default heading styles - the style of headings is particularly poor, with
strange size, font and style choices
Default font - I haven't checked precise, but this of course needs to be the
Ubuntu font
Default colours for drawing objects: that light blue is hideous, we need to
choose something more modern, more professional, more Ubuntu.

I am sure there are more to be done, but perhaps people can report
separate bugs for them or add in the comments.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 811475] Re: Descender letters (g j p q y) get their tail cut off in current song

2012-03-18 Thread Alan Bell
this is a bit of a gtk bug in the ellipsize method of the gtk_lable. It
resizes vertically to the height of the default text, but doesn't
consider the pango formatted big bit around the song title. Forcing
the widget to request a height of 25 seems to fix it nicely.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 945813] Re: magnification settings do not work on Ubuntu

2012-03-05 Thread Alan Bell
what should we do with it? ripping it out seems harsh as people can use
gnome shell on Ubuntu. Could we add some things to poke compiz enhanced
zoom into life, and show those bits when compiz is running and the
gnome-shell stuff when it isn't? Not sure we have a zoom solution at all
with Unity 2d.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 924612] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGABRT in __GI___assert_fail()

2012-02-27 Thread Alan Bell
I have had this a number of times when moving the mouse between
monitors, the mouse cursor freezes on the transition and all control is
lost, can't ctrl+alt+f1 to get to a terminal even. I can ssh into the
machine and restart lightdm, but restarting just unity did nothing. I
think this has happened since the stickyness or pressure between
monitors got added to do with the launcher reveal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 919082] Re: Keyboard layout selector only supports max of 4 layouts

I think it might be because the libxklavier engine is reporting it can do a
maximum of 4 keyboard layouts
http://xlibs.freedesktop.org/xkbdesc/doc/libxklavier-xkl-engine.html#xkl-engine-get-max-num-groups
