[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069757] Re: [Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2013-03-18 Thread Andy Iverson
The LibreOffice bug report has been updated to indicate the fixes for
this bug will be in 3.6.6 and 4.0.2.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54275

This is a huge bonus and thanks to all that have worked on it. I
haven't downloaded to confirm the patch yet, but hope to soon.

At the office I use my Ubuntu computer as a work station and connect
it to our Windows network by establishing Samba (smb) connections. In
this way I can not only use the print facilities but also use directly
the network directories for opening, saving of documents.

Since ubuntu 12.04 directories of windows networks have been
integrated in the procedure for opening, saving of documents in
Libreoffice. Directories available through open samba-connections thus
are integrated in the list of directories on which docs can be saved.
This was a great new features, since before 12.04 one had to save
files on a local directory first and then move or copy them to the
  windows directory in Nautilus.

After having done the upgrade to ubuntu 12.10 QQ this facility does
not work as it should. The network directories are still shown and it
it still possible to open a document. But is it not possible to save
it and giving it another name. Another thing which had become
impossible is to open a document from another source than the network
directory (e.g. local directory, attached doc to a mail) and save it
in a directory of the network server.

When doing this the system gives the information 'Error saving the document
#name#. The file does not exist' (see screenshot 1, text in italian). If one
then presses the OK-button there is a second error communication with the
following text:
Error is saving the document #name#:
  General Error
  Generel I/O error
(see screenshot 2, text in italian)

I have checked whether the same kind of error also occurs in other
programs, at least in Evince (pdf-reader). This is not the case.

A last issue I want to report is that when one opens a doc (e.g. odt)
from a network directory, modifies it and then save it, this seems to
work. There is no error messsage. When checking by re-opening the
saved document, in a few experiments I did the modifications were not
saved. In nautilus the date indication of the file also remained the
same. In other experiments however the saving of the documents with
the modifications seemed to work as it should.

conclusion: the integration of network directories in LO has become
unreliable, with a high risk of loss of information for the user.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069757]

2013-03-18 Thread Andy Iverson
Regarding using the native LO Dialogs, they do not provide "sidebar
access" to pinned (or "mounted") Samba shares, so the user can only find
these shares by manually navigating to the ".gvfs" folder and then to
the share. Note that as far as I can tell there is not the option with
these LO Dialogs to "show hidden directories" so the only way to even
see the .gvfs folder is to manually type it in the location bar.

In summary, since "mounted devices" aren't shown in the LO Dialogs there
doesn't seem to be an easy way to test these dialogs for the same
situation. As noted earlier, in the standard dialogs it is possible to
save correctly by manually navigating to the .gvfs folder.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1007423] Re: ibus won't turn 'on' when in certain programs

2013-03-14 Thread Andy Iverson
I am copying here a comment i made on bug 1023165

I think these problems are all possibly related, as I have done the 2
below things and now have ibus working 100% in all applications, using
the GUI to switch input methods (don't have to rely on the keyboard
shortcut which was confusing for some of my users)

Here is my comment from the above bug (please don't take this as spam:
main point is there is something amiss with the ubuntu customized
version of ibus that is solved by reverting to the debian version!):

==

I have had tons of ibus issues with certain programs as well (mainly in
12.04 but confirmed same problems in 12.10 and I would assume 13.04 as
well but I have not tested yet).

BUT, I have solved all ibus problems (thanks to help from others) with
some manual help, but need additional help from others to konw how to
get these changes made known to the ubuntu devs.

 1. stock ibus for Ubuntu 12.04 (version 1.4.1-3ubuntu1) has several
difficulties when using the system tray icon GUI to enable or disable
keyboards. Sometimes it is not turned on properly even though the icon
changes, sometimes it says "no input window" when there is indeed one,
and other times it simply seems unresponsive: turning on the keyboard
does nothing. This seems across "almost all applications". Same issues
exist with the 12.10 ibus (different version, but still has the
"ubuntu1" customization).

Upstream versions of ibus from Debian Sid (version 1.4.1-7) solve
all of these problems, and ibus seems to work very very well from the
GUI menu with this update (another colleague packaged these for me for
32 and 64 bit: if anyone would like these I would be happy to send them.
so please let me know). Note that this new version will not show up in
the system tray (notification area) by default, however, so either run
this command:

gsettings set desktop.unity.panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

or do the same with dconf-editor.

In summary for this first issue, it is WHATEVER Ubuntu is customizing
that is causing a great headache for ibus users. Stock ibus from Debian
works much better!

2. Setting ibus as the "keyboard input method" in Language Support
will cause unexpected behavior (even with the updated version of ibus
from above). Particuarly in some apps (a custom mono based one I use is
one example), the window ids of the various windows windows will be
confused by ibus, thus resulting in the inablity of ibus to work
consistently (again, from the GUI menu). If ibus is started manually,
these problems do not appear. Only when started through Language
Support. The workaround is to keep Language Support keyboard input
method to "none" and have a startup application that runs "ibus-daemon
-xrd" on login (can either be user level or system level in
/etc/xdg/autostart).

What I expect to happen: I can turn on and change and use input
methods in ibus in any program.

  What really happens:
When in gedit, ibus turns on fine and I can input in Japanese (anthy) and
other languages e.g. Chinese pinyin.
However, when using firefox, I can't get the input method to change to anthy
or any other from "Input method Off" using my shortcut keys (Ctrl+Space).

If I manually right click ibus icon in the tray and left click the
input method (e.g. anthy), the first time, the bullet point changes to
anthy AND "Input method Off", the second time it will change
completely to anthy but sometimes it stays at "Input method Off". Even
if the bullet point changes to anthy, I am not able to input in anthy
  at all.

The first time I turned ibus 'on' to anthy in EiskaltDC++ it worked, however
the following times it didn't work at all.
When I restart ibus, and try to switch to anthy or another input using
right-click on the ibus icon, I only see "No input window" where there should
be input methods. However, when I switch to kate/gedit, I am able to use any
other input method, and can switch input methods using keyboard shortcut or GUI
click menu.
After switching to another input method (e.g. anthy), I am able to switch to
other input methods in apps that I can't use other input methods in (e.g.
firefox) via the GUI click menu (but not keyboard shortcut).

If I check "Share the same input method among all applications":

in gedit, I am able to type using anthy in gedit, but when I switch programs to
firefox for example, it won't work. I can see the anthy logo in the tray icon,

input method (e.g. anthy), the first time, the bullet point changes to
anthy AND "Input method Off", the second time it will change
completely to anthy but sometimes it stays at "Input method Off". Even
if the bullet point changes to anthy, I am not able to input in anthy

-- and switch to anthy (or any other input method besides "Input method Off")
in gedit, I am able to type using anthy in gedit, but when I switch programs to
firefox for example, it won't work. I can see the anthy logo in the tray icon,
and also in the anthy menu, but all the switch "input mode" "typing mode"
"conversion mode" "dictionary" buttons will have disappeared, and only the
anthy logo button (change ibus input) and "About the input method" button
remain.
-- I can't change the input method (using keyboard shortcut orc GUI click
menu) in any application I can't type using other input methods.
-- I can also no longer change input methods using the GUI click menu, but
must use my shortcut (Alt-Shift_L)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1069757] Re: [Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2013-03-12 Thread Andy Iverson
Here is my reply on freedesktop.org (next time I'll reply here first as
I see it will then send the comment over there):

[Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of
  Windows networks (through samba-connection)

Status in LibreOffice Productivity Suite:

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

2013-02-24 Thread Andy Iverson
I don't claim to know the details of the code, but regarding it being a
Nautilus issue, remember that LO 3.5.x works fine in this regard. The
issue only exists with L0 3.6.x and newer.

Title:
[expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no
  EDID)

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am able to get an external VGA monitor (or projector) to work if I
start my laptop with it connected. However, if I start the laptop with
it disconnected there is no signal on the external. The Displays
screen shows the external, and thinks that it is active, but there is
no signal being sent to it. This has been a persistent problem since
10.04 (I am now on 12.04 each upgrade hoping something is
  improved).

I should note that even when it works (starting with display
connected), Displays still says the monitor is "unknown" (but it sends
the signal). For the correct resolution to display, I have had to add
a few xrandr lines for my monitor to my .xprofile file... otherwise
resolution is limited to default 1024x768. So, resolution issues can
be worked around, but the main issue is that the external doesn't get
a signal without starting the machine with it connected.

  I have tried:

adding i915.modeset=1 to grub (also i965.modeset=1 since someone
posted that this helped even though lshw shows i915)

adding following ppa and doing a dist-upgrade: sudo add-apt-repository
ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa (I have since done a ppa-purge on this ppa so all
  packages have been reverted)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 979748] Re: [expected] VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no “hot plugging”, no EDID)

2013-02-19 Thread Andy Iverson
I will attach 3 files with the output of xrandr --verbose. However,
this is with Precise w/o edgers ppa. I'll first update to edgers ppa,
do it again, then later try Raring.

First file is xrandr --verbose when booting w/o VGA external connected
(and still disconnected). So this is "baseline".

Second file is xrandr --verbose after plugging in VGA external (but
having booted w/o it). This is the scenario where the screen is "blank"
getting "no signal" even though "Displays" indicates it is connected and
"on".

Third file is xrandr --verbose after booting with VGA external
connected. In this case (and only in this case), the external works
properly.

Thank you for the reply. I think I understand the situation and can
appreciate that many others would be negatively affected by my
experience being improved!

I do need more advice on how to "manually trigger a probe". In my
experience, connecting the monitor (after booted), then opening display
manager will have display manager indicate the monitor is connected (and
active), but still no signal is sent to it (still black, monitor
reporting "no signal"). So, any help on triggering this would be
welcomed. If I am able to manually do this without rebooting then I
would be accepting of this bug being "resolved".

Thanks again for the reply.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1009663]

2013-01-25 Thread Andy Iverson
To clarify, the openoffice PDFImport extension (manually downloaded
version: 1.0.4) can be installed directly through the Extension Manager
(no need to first install the LibreOffice PDFImport and then manually
replace the files in /usr/lib/libreoffice/share/extensions/pdfimport).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1009663]

2013-01-25 Thread Andy Iverson
Quote from Lauchpad comment on bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1009663/comments/11):

"You can fix this by downloading the pdf-import from openoffice (
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport ). I just
replaced the files in /usr/lib/libreoffice/share/extensions/pdfimport/
with this from openoffice and had the images back."

I have confirmed this does fix the problem (for Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit with
LO version 3.5.4.2). The modify date on the OO version of the PDFImport
Extension is 2012-10-14. So, this must be a regression??

In the test document I was working with, using the LO PDFImport only
imports the first 18 pages of the document. No error is given, just
doesn't import the rest. Using the OO PDFImport, ALL pages are
imported, AND all images show correctly.

I will attach this larger pdf. First image is on page 19 (simple
exclamation icon that actually DOES NOT show correctly with the OO
version of PDFImport, but I am overlooking that for now) or page 20 for
a "more substantial image", so it appears that the LO version of
PDFImport is somehow hanging when it gets to an image (??).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1009663] Re: [Upstream] PDF File Imports Without Image

2013-01-20 Thread Andy Iverson
To clarify, the openoffice PDFImport extension (manually downloaded
version: 1.0.4) can be installed directly through the Extension Manager
(no need to first install the LibreOffice PDFImport and then manually
replace the files in /usr/lib/libreoffice/share/extensions/pdfimport).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1009663] Re: [Upstream] PDF File Imports Without Image

2013-01-20 Thread Andy Iverson
Confirmed the fix from #11 above works. In summary, this seems to be a
regression and replacing the contents with the openoffice extension
(modify date of 2010-12-14 on that one) solves it. I'll add the same
comment to the LO bug report.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1064985] Re: Firefox 16. Warning about close multiple tabs is always on

2012-10-15 Thread Andy Iverson
Found this reference to the bug on mozilla support site:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/939101

In short, it is a confirmed bug for Firefox 16 and is confirmed to be
fixed in Firefox 18.

Do I need to revert to Firefox 15 to address the bug? This one is
"really annoying", especially as I don't see a manual hack to fix it in
Firefox 16.
