[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1196239] Re: Add support for fake modes on laptop screens which only have one

2016-11-21 Thread Bill Filler
Just catching up on the comments here..

To answer the question of what is the user requirement, I believe the
answer is "I'd like everything on my screen to look bigger/smaller". The
system settings for Displays will have a Scale slider (which currently
is hidden until the capability exists).

Where is the bug/work item captured to implement Scaling in the shell?
If this bug is a wishlist, the other surely needs to be High priority.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1616509] [NEW] notification with screen locked shows undesireable results on tablet

2016-08-24 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

running rc-proposed on m10 tablet, have security setup for passcode. The
problem is whenever my screen is locked and I get a notification (i.e.
new gmail message), the screen turns on and I see the OSK taking up
half of the screen and the password field focus. This is really
distracting and looks bad, as I'm not trying to login.

Would be better to just show the notification with no osk. Seems an easy
fix would be to make sure the passcode field is not focused when the
screen is locked (or turned on) which would make the osk not appear.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1574851] Re: libgl not found on nvidia machines (so far)

2016-08-02 Thread Bill Filler
I can also confirm with snapd 2.0.10 that I get the same gl errors so this is
not fixed.
Also tried the workaround, copy all files from /usr/lib/nvidia-xxx to
/var/lib/snapd/lib/gl/ and restarted snapd and now things are working.

  and on IRC

I cannot determine if anyone has had success running one of the
desktop-example apps from the store on an nvidia gpu machine.
I asked Alberto Aguirre on the mir team (who has a nvidia gpu) to try SDoC
and install the ubuntu-clock-app from the store - he confirms seeing the exact
same issue, he can be questioned if debug help is needed.

Note, from an engagement on IRC earlier, the person confirmed that
even rebuilding the clock snap locally and sideloading did not address
  the issue.

Bug description:
After installing OTA-11, connectivity to a Cisco AP1131AG AP (IOS
12.4-25d.JA2) stopped working, possibly due to the length of the WPA
pass-phrase, which was 29 characters long. The pass-phrase
requirement is from 8 to 63 characters. After reducing the pass-
phrase to 14 (and sometimes 15) characters connectivity is restored.

Attempting to connect to a Cisco 1702i (IOS 15.3-3.JC1) which has both
802.11 ac (wave 1) and 802.11n radios has similar problems: (a) it
cannot "see" the 802.11ac radio at all (interface Dot11Radio0) and
although it "sees" the 802.11n radio (interface Dot11Radio1) it cannot
connect. The pass-phrase length requirement on both radios is 18 to
  128 characters.

In both cases the Cisco APs do not log any event.

Prior to OTA 11 connectivity worked normally on OTA 10.1

OS: Ubuntu 15.04 (OTA-11) on BQ Aquaris E5

This is a wishlist bug to eventually remove GTK3 from Ubuntu Phone
  images to save some space.

  ===TODO===

  -- address-book-service --

address-book-service depends on evolution-data-server, which depends
on GTK3. evolution-data-server further depends on libgweather-3-6 and
libgcr-ui-3-1 which both directly depend on GTK3 too.

Would it be possible to work with libfolks-eds25 and other libraries
alone? Or would it be possible to modify evolution-data-server
building to not depend on GTK3 since we're not using the toolkit
  anyway?

  -- themes (unity-asset-pool, adwaita-icon-theme...) --

  humanity-icon-theme, ubuntu-mono and unity-asset-pool depend on
  adwaita-icon-theme. adwaita-icon-theme directly depends on GTK3.

  -- ubuntu-system-settings --

ubuntu-system-settings depends on libtimezonemap1 which directly
depends on GTK3. Maybe the library could be made not to depend on
  GTK3?

  ===DONE===
  -- gnome-control-center-signon --
Since libaccount-plugin-1.0-0 is included on Ubuntu Phone images, would it be
possible to refactor it so that it would not depend on GTK3 bringing it on the
images?

The logic to set the dim timeout value is there in
battery/SleepValues.xml in the GSettings onChanged handler, but it
seems that the onChanged handler is not called when the activity-
  timeout value changes.

Not sure if this is a problem in the way ubuntu-system-settings uses
the GSettings QML item, or if the item implementation itself is broken
  somehow.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1487111] Re: camera app unresponsive if trusted prompt left for some time

2015-08-21 Thread Bill Filler
Note, we've added a workaround in qtubuntu-camera (in silo 40) to make
this problem better (no hang) but does not fix it completely.

The following will occur:

1) try to record a video
2) don't press the trust prompt
3) let your phone go to sleep
4) wake it up and open camera
5) press on trust prompt (either decision)
6) now you'll have to press record button again as we detected the timeout and
did not record the video
7) the videos after this will have no audio until you reboot regardless of
prompt choice or settings change, as pulse is in a messed up state

Bug description:
As Ubuntu touch uses an auto-suspend model, it's possible for the
system to be suspended while a user has a hotspot active and in use.

In order to prevent such behavior, we should modify NetworkManager to
inhibit suspend via powerd's DBus interface when hotspot is active and
one or more clients are connected to the hotspot. As a first pass,
inhibiting suspend when hotspot is active would probably be
sufficient. This could probably be implemented via a NM dispatcher
script, which would run when the hotspot is activated.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking#hotspot-power:
  * Whenever at least one person is using your hotspot, the device should not
sleep automatically.
  * The indicator icon should be different when anyone is connected than when
no-one is.
  * If a hotspot is set up, there should be a “Hotspot” item in the “Ways to
reduce battery use” list in “Power” settings.

Bug description:

  device name: m75
  channel: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed
  last update: 2015-04-14 22:23:10
  version version: 171

Upon boot, my v6 routes include a default via ccmni0:
  $ ip -6 route
  fe80::/64 dev wlan0  proto kernel  metric 256
default dev ccmni0 proto static metric 1024

Even though there's no v6 address on the device:
  $ ip -6 addr
  1: lo: LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP mtu 65536
  inet6 ::1/128 scope host
 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
  10: wlan0: BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP mtu 1500 qlen 1000
  inet6 fe80::3abc:1aff:fe18:b68b/64 scope link
 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

This means that hosts that have v6 addresses are tried to be reached via v6,
which obviously fails:
   29% [Connecting to ports.ubuntu.com (2001:67c:1360:8001::18)]

Toggling GSM data loses the default route:

  $ ip -6 route
  fe80::/64 dev wlan0  proto kernel  metric 256

And the connection succeeds via v4.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1418077] Re: NM fails to create a cellular data connection for a unacceptably long time

2015-02-27 Thread Bill Filler
The other big problem here is that when I'm connected to wifi, I expect
to have a 3G connection as well so things like MMS will work. Currently
when I'm connected to wifi MMS does not work at all - I cannot recv MMS
attachements because those require a data connection and there doesn't
seem to be one.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1413803] [NEW] music resumes playback after first call hungup and second call on hold

2015-01-22 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

krillin rtm build 208

Steps to reproduce:

1) open music app and play some music through the speaker
2) call ubuntu phone
3) answer call
4) the music is paused correctly
5) call ubuntu phone from another phone
6) answer the second call (the first call is automatically put on hold)
7) hangup the second call

Expected results:
- the first call is still connected but on hold, no music should be playing
- music should not be resumed until all calls are disconnected

Actual results:
- the first call is still connected on hold, but music is now playing through
the earpiece (not speaker)
- after un-holding the first call you can hear a mix of the audio from the
callers voice and the music
- when hang up the call the music switches from the earpiece to the speaker

music resumes playback after first call hungup and second call on hold

Status in Media Hub:
  New
Status in media-hub package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  krillin rtm build 208

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) open music app and play some music through the speaker
  2) call ubuntu phone
  3) answer call
  4) the music is paused correctly
  5) call ubuntu phone from another phone
  6) answer the second call (the first call is automatically put on hold)
  7) hangup the second call

  Expected results:
  - the first call is still connected but on hold, no music should be playing
  - music should not be resumed until all calls are disconnected

  Actual results:
  - the first call is still connected on hold, but music is now playing through
the earpiece (not speaker)
  - after un-holding the first call you can hear a mix of the audio from the
callers voice and the music
  - when hang up the call the music switches from the earpiece to the speaker

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1413065] Re: [Call]The call interface sometimes disappears when making emergency call

2015-01-20 Thread Bill Filler
** Description changed:

This is the public version of the following bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/barajas/+bug/1393641

After debugging seems the issue is that the application is getting
deactivated and then activated (via Qt.application.active) when making a
call in greeter (emergency) mode. This is causing problems for the app
as it pops pages when it gets deactivated and causes the bug sometimes.
The underlying problem is that this signal should not be occuring when
the app is clearly in the foreground. It doesn't happen when not in
  greeter mode.

An easy way to test is to install telepathy-ofono deb which is attached
and set a fake emergency number to allow you to dial a normal number in
emergency mode to help test by running this command at the shell:

  mc-tool set ofono/ofono/account0 string:fakeEmergencyNumber=yourNumber

Then adding console.log() to the applicationActive signal in dialer-
app.qml will verify. When pressing the call button the app is
  deactivated then reactivated.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1) install attached telephathy-ofono deb
+ 2) run
+ mc-tool set ofono/ofono/account0 string:fakeEmergencyNumber=yourNumber
+ and then follow secondary instructions (if any)
+ 3) lock phone
+ 4) press emergency call button
+ 5) dial yourNumber which will be a fake emergency call
+ 6) press the call button
+ 7) sometimes you will see a blank Emergency Call page after you press the
call button, and when it works you will see the live call page
+ 8) adding debug to dialer-app.qml will show the active=false then active=true
behavior after performing step 6.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1408396] [NEW] media-hub-server crash after recording videos, pulse using high CPU

2015-01-07 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

Using rtm image 184 on krillin

I was testing recording videos with camera-app and noticed that at some
point during the recording process that pulseaudio was using 40% CPU and
that did not ever get smaller. Then upon closing the camera-app media-
hub-server and camera-app crashes. The following is the stacktrace which
looks like pulseaudio crashed.

Steps to reproduce:
- open camera-app and record a bunch of videos using both front and back cameras
- run top -d1 during this and you'll see pulseaudio using a lot of cpu
- move camera-app to the background and try to swipe it away and you'll see the
crash

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1407694] [NEW] Gmail webapp stops working and can't recover

2015-01-05 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

ubuntu-rtm image 184 on Krillin

Was using the phone a lot during the break and experienced Gmail getting
into a state where it would launch and have a white screen. You could
not recover even after killing and restarting the app. This happened
mulitple times. I believe the online account service possibly is getting
killed by the OOM killer and trying to launch Gmail after this occurs
does not work.

If this is the case, we should a) try to not let account service be
killed by oom killer and b) recover gracefully if the service is not
running and still allow the app to be launced.

Steps to reproduce:
1) setup online account for Google and Gmail
2) unplug the phone from USB
3) launch gmail webapp and a lot of other apps
4) kill gmail but leave other apps running
5) use the phone for a while and let it suspend for a while (5-10 minutes)
6) try and launch gmail and you get a blank white screen, see the log below.
7) kill and restart gmail with the same error

The only way I could make it work again was to delete the online account
or reboot

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1398431] Re: Can't mute a conference call

2014-12-15 Thread Bill Filler
I'm still seeing this bug on krillin with the fix. Here is the scenario
I am testing:

1) call ubuntu phone from phone 1
2) call ubuntu phone from phone 2
3) merge the calls on ubuntu phone
4) verify audio is heard on phone 1 and phone 2
5) mute ubuntu phone
6) no audio heard on phone 1, but audio heard on phone 2
7) muting phone 1 causes no audio to be heard on phone 2

The mute button is properly enabled disabled when pressing it. Seeing this in
.cache/upstart/dbus.log | grep Pulse when toggling the mute button:
Setting PulseAudio source 'source.primary' muted '0'
Setting PulseAudio source 'source.primary' muted '1'

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1339016] Re: Initial sync of the calendar takes a prohibitive amount of time

2014-11-22 Thread Bill Filler
We were able to improve the situation by limiting how far in the past to
sync for calendar events. This was a combination of a new version of
syncevolution, and a patch to it and sync-monitor to introduce a
syncInterval configuration setting (defaults to 90 days) specifiying
how many days in the past to go back when syncing. For my caledar, it
used to take 20 minutes for initial sync. Now it takes 33 seconds! Will
need testing by others but this seems to help greatly.

Title:
Occasional hang in unity 8 dash on the phone

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The dash is sometimes hanging on the phone.

  See the attached backtrace.

The issue is as follows: we are maintaining a client-side tree of all
NetworkManager devices. When we see that a new device has been added,
we query its properties in order to build our local proxy. Doing this
means that we are making QtDBus calls from a signal handler. Due to a
bug in QtDBus this is not safe.

libdbus-1 has a recursive lock on its DBusConnection. When the signal
arrives, the lock is acquired and the sginal handler is run. The
signal handler can make DBus calls (which also require the lock)
because the lock is recursive. QtDBus also has a lock that is always
acquired before the libdbus-1 connection lock is acquired.

Unfortuntaely, the QtDBus lock is not acquired in the case of the
incoming call from DBus -- only the DBus lock is.

If another thread tries to do an unrelated DBus call meanwhile, it will
acquire the QtDBus lock first and then the DBus lock (which is held because of
the signal that arrived). Once the signal handler gets to the point of wanting
to make a DBus call (in order to query the properties of the just-added network
device) it will attempt to acquire the QtDBus lock. This is a lock-inversion
deadlock.

There are at least three bugs here:

  1) QtDBus should be fixed in order to avoid this sort of lock
inversion problem. Even if we fix this one situation, it seems quite
likely that issues like this will arise again.

  2) QNetworkManager should avoid the issue in QtDBus until such a time
as it is fixed. This could be done by dispatching to a worker thread
on receipt of signals so that the queries are done in a fresh call
stack (without the libdbus-1 lock held).

  3) Apparently the only reason we are using NetworkManager at all is in
order to know if we are on a 3G connection or not (in order to avoid
too much data charges). This would be much easier to do if
NetworkManager provided a property that we could watch directly
instead of bringing up an entire tree of objects in order to answer a
very simple question. To that end I've filed
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=739080 which we can
  hopefully get addressed relatively quickly.

I consider 3) to be the real fix as far as we are concerned, but we should
probably ensure that the Qt people know about 1) and 2). Either of those could
function as a workaround for us in the meantime, but the idea that we are
creating this complex object tree to answer a simple question is ridiculous, so
we should really fix that directly.

2014-10-08 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

This bug has been here since forever, but really needs to get cleaned up
for rtm.

Steps to reproduce:
- send 2 text messages
- lock your phone
- unlock your phone
- confirm infographic says 2 text messages sent today
- lock your phone for the night and go to sleep
- unlock your phone the next day

Expected results:
- infographic should be cleared, or show relevant information for today

Actual results:
- infographic still says 2 text messages sent today

When the phone is unlocked the greeter should update the infographic

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1342123] Re: evolution-calendar-factory always running with high memory usage

2014-09-22 Thread Bill Filler
To clarify, out of the box on krillin with no calendar sync even
enabled, evolution-calendar-factory uses 32MB which is the 4th highest
process in memory usage. This is with an empty database of no calendar
events or alarms.

I'm assuming evolution-calendar-factory gets loaded by indicator-
datetime initially such that the indicator can show calendar events.

If you have a large database of calendar entries (i.e. after you've done
a google calendar sync), as Pat reported this process can grow to well
over 100MB. It seems to have no upper bound, and since the evolution
backend for calendar is simply a flat file of type .ics, e-c-f appears
to load the entire file into memory.

e-c-f really needs a sqlite backend or something such that it can manage
it more efficiently. Someone needs to investigate what can be done in
the short term reduce the memory usage if possible.

Bug description:
At boot the process is using over 100MB on my mako (build 129)
I sync'd a fairly large set of calendar events from google previously

Does this process need to be running all the time?
Can we streamline it to not read so much of the data set, which it appears to
be doing?

With no calendar entries (i.e. removing
.local/share/evolution/xxx/calendar.ics) the process still uses over 30MB

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1339016] Re: Initial sync of the calendar takes a prohibitive amount of time

2014-09-22 Thread Bill Filler
We use syncevolution, which communicates with Google on the remote side
and evolution-data-server on the local side to store events. There is no
API in syncevolution to limit the scope of events retrieved. We need to
look into modifying it to do so, and to optimize it's operational time
as it's ridiculously slow (this in part is likely due to evolution-
calendar-factory using a flat file to store the calendar events).

Renato has indicated there is a newer version of syncevolution which has
recently been released that may improve the situation. The next step is
to try this new version and see if it helps.

Status in “unity-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Ubuntu 14.04 beta, upgraded April 12, 2014 from Ubuntu 13.10

I have two input sources - English and Russian. I've set up Caps
Lock key at Systems Settings-Text Entry-Switch to next source
using. Now if I am pressing Caps Lock the source indicator quickly
changes its state as En-Ru-En-Ru-En (or Ru-En-Ru), so actually
input source never changes. Using other keys (or combinations) to
change input source works as intended, changes En to Ru and vice
  versa.

  * Updated 2014.05.17:

After clean Install of Ubuntu 14.04 and assigning Caps Lock as input
source switcher all was worked as intended. But after turning on On
  Screen Keyboard bug striked back.

Just found a condition to repeat this bug (two or more input sources -
languages - must be configured in system):

  1. Set Caps Lock as input source change button
  2. At System Settings - Universal Access - Typing turn on On Screen
Keyboard
  3. Reboot
  4. Now the On Screen Keyboard is on screen and pressing Caps Lock in text
input field (gedit, for example) quickly changes input source several times.

After hiding keyboard from screen such behaviour remains until On
Screen Keyboard will be completely turned off in System Settings -
  Universal Access.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1359125] Re: Use a discreet notification when there is an active call

2014-08-27 Thread Bill Filler
at minimum, we should never play the ringtone when on an active call,
possibly just vibrate. The current behavior on build 210 on mako only
plays ringtone and doesn't vibrate at all when on active call. Reversing
this would be a step in the right direction.

@rsalveti
Regarding alarms and other notifications, is there a global way to not play the
ringtones when on an active call and perform some other system wide action
(like vibrate only or maybe vibrate and a small sound?)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1218294] Re: [dialer app] During a live call, there's no volume adjustment available

2014-07-29 Thread Bill Filler
just tested on Utopic build 157 and volume adjustment during call
doesn't seem to control the volume of the earpiece, only the speaker
phone. And turning the volume all the way down even when the
speakerphone is on doesn't turn off all the sound as I expected, it just
lowers it to a certain point.

Bug description:
The package names of QML modules should be of the format qml-module
-{$module-name}[version], a transition that was started during Qt 5.3
preparation in Ubuntu. For example this could be qml-module-qtquick-
localstorage or qml-module-qtsysteminfo for non versioned modules, and
  qml-module-ubuntu-webthing0.3 for versioned/co-installable modules.

  Further details in Debian e-mail:
  http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-kde-
  talk/2014-March/001889.html

For Ubuntu, transitional packages should be put in place for smooth
distribution upgrades, since we're shipping with the old names in previous
Ubuntus. An example of that is at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qtsystems-opensource-src/revision/31
 - in other words:
  - Make the old package a transitional oldlibs package that depends on the new
package
  - Add Breaks/Replaces to the new package for the old non-transitional
packages (be careful about the version number specification)
  - Keep Multi-Arch: same and Architecture: any for the transitional package
  - Write QML module instead of QML plugin
  - Rename also the *.install files

  Poor microphone quality (mako)

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After months of complaints from people talking to me on the phone
(mako ubuntu touch), I finally got around to use multiROM to dual boot
Ubuntu Touch and Android. Several people can confirm that there is a
noticable difference in terms of sound/microphone quality between
Android and UT in phone calls. With UT, my voice gets distorted to an
extent that person at the other end have real difficulties to hear
what I am saying, while with Android call quality is much better with
  no distortion.

I have had a suspicion for a long time that this might be a software
and not a hardware issue. After trying Android and Ubuntu on the same
hardware I believe this suspicion is proved correct. This issue has
persisted in all the builds I have tried since at least the beginning
of the year, but probably longer. I am now at r17 of Utopic.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1324157] Re: cannot receive MMS using AT+T

2014-07-07 Thread Bill Filler
Exact steps to edit the apn settings:
1) sudo stop ofono
2) sudo vi /var/lib/ofono/IMSI/gprs
remove all context's except the one named ATT Phone. Should look like this
after you are done:

[Settings]
Powered=true
RoamingAllowed=false

[context1]
Name=ATT Phone
AccessPointName=phone
Username=
Password=
Type=internet
Protocol=ip
MessageProxy=proxy.mobile.att.net:80
MessageCenter=http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

3) sudo start ofono (or reboot)

Now MMS recv should work on AT+T network

  Click applications scope

Now you can't re-enable them. We shouldn't provide a method to get

on maguro, so odds are this is a driver bug. The network in question

  What happens:
There is no sound in the headphones and the phone's earpiece works for the
call. Now if you pull out the headphone jack and plug it in you can hear the
sound in the headphones.

On the end if we connect a 3 pin headphones (the one with a mic in it)
