[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1989508] Re: hp-plugin unable to load plugin.conf

2022-10-07 Thread Brian J. Murrell
I finally did discover the workaround, after a while of (wasted time)
searching.

But how many other people are going to continue to have to waste time
researching how to "work-around" this issue when the solution is a
simple matter of just putting the missing file back on the web-server?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1478364] [NEW] invalid session being saved

2015-07-26 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

When I log out of my desktop I get some files in ~/.config/gnome-session
/saved-session/, pressumably the saving of my session so that it can be
restored on next login.

But on next login I get an error from gnome-session:

env: unrecognized option '--sm-client-id'
Try 'env --help' for more information.
...
gnome-session[9609]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-panel.desktop' failed to
register before timeout
gnome-session[9609]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry

and the session aborts. Investigation leads to the following:

$ cat ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/gnome-panel.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Panel
Comment=Launch other applications and provide various utilities to manage
windows, show the time, etc.
Icon=gnome-panel
Exec=env --sm-client-id 1037b9c00525f898c41437926147603637010179
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-flashback- gnome-panel
Terminal=false
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Bugzilla=GNOME
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Product=gnome-panel
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Component=general
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Version=3.8.0

X-GNOME-Autostart-startup-id=1037b9c00525f898c41437926147603637010179

Clearly the env --sm-client-id is causing this problem. But why is
gnome-session saving this incorrect .desktop file for the session?

This is gnome-session-3.9.90-0ubuntu12.1 on Ubuntu Trusty.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1478364] Re: invalid session being saved

2015-07-26 Thread Brian J. Murrell
As you will notice, upstream closed this bug OBSOLETE with the
explanation:

Version 3.9 is an ancient unstable development version and not supported
anymore by GNOME developers. GNOME developers are no longer working on that
older version, so there will not be any bug fixes by GNOME developers for the
version that you use.

So looks like it's on you Ubuntu/Canonical to fix this as this is a bug
in an LTS release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1268597] [NEW] doesn't see printers from 1.6 servers

2014-01-13 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

On current LTS (Precise) CUPS does not see printers advertised from CUPS
1.6 systems. Yes, I understand that the whole CUPS browse feature went
away in CUPS 1.6, but that means that current LTS has a functionality
hole/regression where CUPS 1.6 servers are concerned.

Fedora has dealt with this for example by supplying cups-browsed.

Ubuntu, current-LTS should do the same or similar. LTS systems should
not be broken simply because other machines it used to get printers from
upgraded to CUPS 1.6.

Brian, if you want this fix for 12.04 LTS, you should look at the SRU

Like I said, *I* don't need a release of this in LTS. I have my local
patched copy and it's working just fine.

But other users... inexperienced (i.e. with the bug
finding/reporting/fixing and package updating) users who might not even
know where to find information about this bug in their desktop O/S
deserve a fix.

Ultimately, users should not need to know the SRU procedure. They
should just get fixes because maintainers provide them for them.

segfault. I have no idea how common the crash is or how to reproduce it
 myself. Thanks.

A segfault is a bug, by definition. Bugs should be fixed. They
shouldn't be allowed to fester, waiting for users to trip on them. What
more needs to be explained?

TBH, after all of this time, I don't recall.

I'm not at all saying that this bug shouldn't be fixed but honestly
there isn't enough information here for me to know what the bug is, so
it's impossible for me to independently verify whether the patch is
sufficient to fix the bug on Ubuntu 12.04.

Well, I can attest to the patch working. But if you need to do it
independently, I guess I can't help and we'll just have to leave this
unfixed for the next user to discover.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1094496] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon leaks memory

2013-03-08 Thread Brian J. Murrell
But I do have a 12.04 machine and I already submitted a patch (which
just came from upstream, not my patch) which fixes the problem on the
gnome-keyring shipped in 12.04 LTS. So really, I don't know why you are
proposing all of this rigmarole with backporting patches from g-k-r
3.6.1 and sponsorship, etc. Why not just ship the LTS 3.2.2 g-k-r
release with the attached patch?

It's all of this beauraucratic red-tape to getting such a simple but
important fix into what is supposed to be a supported release that makes
Ubuntu no longer a desired platform to use.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 848183]

2013-02-20 Thread Brian J. Murrell

 Workaround:
Save attached message to folder (outside Thunderbird) and import it with the
 addon ImportExportTools.

Well, yes. I think we all understand what the workaround is. But I
think we all agree that it's cumbersome at best. That's why we are all
CC'd on this bug, hoping it will get fixed.

Nothing more specific than just sit back and wait. :-) Seriously, I
don't to anything special here. I keep SSH and PGP keys in my keyring
and ssh a lot and sign every outgoing e-mail. Both ssh and e-mail
signing utilize the keyring of course.

Security PPA?

And I'm not sure why it's in the
 thunderbird-stable PPA.

I would imagine because it's the latest stable release?

Using those PPA's sends out mixed messages and
is incredibly confusing considering I blogged about them months ago to
say that they are no longer in use :/

I guess I don't care where I get the packages as long as I can get
up-to-date releases, quickly and easily -- without all of the
bureaucracy of SRUs, backport justification writeups and whatever other
crap makes getting updates take 6 months.

I really should have just deleted those PPA's to avoid all confusion.
They are definitely not meant to be in use.

So where should a current Precise user be getting their thunderbird
15.0.1 from considering that it's not yet in the Precise repos?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Seriously. Are you folks really that bitter about this Mint thing? I
know you know that Mint is nothing more than Ubuntu Linux with usable
desktops (i.e. Cinnamon and MATE), for those people that find your
tablet-izing Unity desktop simply unusable.

Heck, Mint is not even a fork but simply a layer of packages on top of
Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages
out of a PPA. Do you simply refuse to support Ubuntu Linux packages
simply because a PPA may have installed some unrelated packages?

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own
repositories:

Package: gnome-keyring 3.2.2-2ubuntu4

apt-cache validates this assertion also:

$ apt-cache policy gnome-keyring
gnome-keyring:
  Installed: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Candidate: 3.2.2-2ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.2-2ubuntu4 0
500 http://apt.interlinx.bc.ca/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So, are you really going to play this sour grapes game or are you going
to do the right thing here?

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033904] Re: memory leak in gnome-keyring-daemon

2012-08-07 Thread Brian J. Murrell

@Brian: no biterness there but we have too much to do and I'm not

But you know, just like you do with your ubuntu package postfix, they
postfix the packages they modify with linuxmint such as:

ii plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu28-1linuxmint2 graphical boot animation ...

And doubly so, I also demonstrated for you that this package is a Ubuntu
package from a Ubuntu repository, so your whole what mint might [...]

 some replies though:

[ requoted to properly attribute what I said ]
Heck, Mint is not even a fork but simply a layer of packages on top of
Ubuntu Linux -- really, no different than installing a bunch of packages
out of a PPA. Do you simply refuse to support Ubuntu Linux packages
simply because a PPA may have installed some unrelated packages?

We do reject report coming from ppa users (including the official GNOME3
ppa) yes, we don't have the resources to try to figure what might happen
 with non supported combinaison

Did you miss the part above where I said in relation to PPAs unrelated
packages. Of course I don't expect you to look at packages that come
form PPAs and I never insinuated that I do. I clearly said unrelated
packages.

Mint also happen to do very hackish things (like patching files
installed by packages on boot from init script, that's how they change
their user agent in firefox for example to avoid repackaging it), we
know of a few hacks like that and I don't trust them to not create real
 issues with those

Do you really think they are doing something like that with
gnome-keyring-daemon? Or is this just an excuse?

If Mint was not a fork

They are not a fork. Must of what is in a Mint installation comes
directly from Ubuntu repositories.

they would just package cinnamon and mate in a
ppa or in Ubuntu universe and create an Ubuntu flavor for it the way
Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu etc are doing, you liking it or not what they
are doing is forking the distribution rather than collaborating with us.

Really though, how is them adding a repository for their packages,
layering on top of Ubuntu any different than adding a PPA anyway. Sure,
they might have decided to put a bunch more polish and marketing around
it, but surely you cannot really say that the additional mint repository
that one adds to Ubuntu to get mint is really any different than adding
a PPA.

You can see clearly from the apport output that this report is for an
unmodified gnome-keyring package straight out of your own repositories:
 Package: gnome-keyring 3.2.2-2ubuntu4

 No, I can't, see comment #1

 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.gpg.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.pkcs11.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.secrets.desktop.txt
 modified.conffile..etc.xdg.autostart.gnome.keyring.ssh.desktop.txt

Those are configuration files. So any package in a Ubuntu installation
with modified configuration files is automatically Invalid?

 those are modified conffiles

Yes. conffiles. conffiles are meant to be modified. That's the
*entire* point of them being conffiles.

Depends what you call the right thing, I'm going to focus on supporting
Ubuntu users and let the Mint team supports their users, it seems only
fair? Why would forking and not assuming the responsability which come
 with the fork be right?

Because you know in all honesty that this is a bona fide Ubuntu package
that has a defect in it and the Mint thing really has nothing to do with
it. It's just a convenient reason to close a bug report without
actually doing anything.

As of which release? I have 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.1 installed and I see no
evidence of /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/debug (after both having
changed the 'RUN=' from no to yes and even changing the permissions
to 755) being run for example.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

I am running intrepid i386 and amd64 on a handful of systems. On every
system, both upgraded and fresh installs, i use a script (first
attachment) for updating a DNS record through DNSSEC.

Using /etc/network/interfaces or invoking dhclient directly correctly
updates the DNS record (second attachment).

Using network-manager the DNS record update script doesn't seem to run
  (third attachment).

On a laptop it is inconvenient to constantly reconfigure devices. For
desktops, a workaround is to have a dhcp entry in
  /etc/network/interfaces for the relevant connection.

As a side note, the script is designed to work with PPP ip-up.d as
well. However, I haven't yet found a way to configure network-manager
to dial up to 3G over a bluetooth connected modem. It may apply here
similarily though. Wvdial works with the script.

My apologies, I confused this bug with another one.

So then you will correct the Fix Released (and whatnot flags)?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1001606] [NEW] changelog entry missing

Public bug reported:

The changelog server entries for release 3.5.3-0ubuntu1 are missing.
The following URLs 404 for me here.

means i always have to relaunch application again while its playing or keep it
minimized instead of closing it as i used before

it worked without any problem in maverick from which i upgraded to
  oneiric

--hide option has been removed from rhythmbox-client,

~sigh~ Seriously? Are you actually reading and comprehending my
comments? The error above is not an invalid command syntax error
it's a that command does not even exist error.

 but left in
man page - this is bug #958238. Other options like --play or --next
 should work correctly

OK. I will humor you...

$ rhythmbox-client --next
/usr/bin/python: can't find '__main__' module in '/usr/share/command-not-found'

Clearly command-not-found is also broken but it doesn't change the
fact that there is simply no rhythmbox-client command installed.

packages.ubuntu.com even confirms this:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=oneiricarch=anymode=exactfilenamesearchon=contentskeywords
=rhythmbox-client

compared to:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=nattyarch=anymode=exactfilenamesearchon=contentskeywords
=rhythmbox-client

and:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=precisearch=anymode=exactfilenamesearchon=contentskeywords
=rhythmbox-client

Looks like you are affected with bug 561046.
 Please reinstall 'command-not-found' and 'command-not-found-data'
package and try launching 'rhythmbox-client' commands again.

Dude, surely you can see that this command-not-found issue is
completely orthogonal and not the cause of the rhythmbox-client
command not being packaged on oneiric. But again, I will humor
you by installing command-not-found and try yet again:

$ sudo apt-get install command-not-found

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

See. Not installed, yet I do have rhythmbox installed:

Looks like the libproxy/webkit bug you mentioned.

Shouldn't be per

which is the work-around I have implemented here locally and it resolves
the issue with gnome-clock (so as a work-around, it works).

Is there a bug filed in
 Launchpad for this?

Yup. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libproxy/+bug/547106 and
going on 2 years old now.

Also, I think http://code.google.com/p/libproxy/issues/detail?id=153 is the
relevant upstream bug for that issue.

It is, and as you can see in that bug, upstream is not going to address
the very old version of libproxy that Ubuntu is still carrying.

Title:
ubuntu one music store previews not using proxy

Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
While the Ubuntu One Music Store banshee plugin seems to work behind
an authenticating proxy, generally speaking, the fetching of track
previews does not appear to be using the proxy authentication
  credentials and thus gets denied.

Moreover, when a preview does fail to fetch, banshee goes on to play
something from the local music collection which confuses one into
thinking that what it chose to play is the song preview.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 239999] Re: nm should support easy bonding

2011-12-28 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Is there somewhere/how I can track this work upstream? The upstream bug
mentioned here doesn't seem to have anything new in it.

Title:
  nm should support easy bonding

Status in NetworkManager:
  Confirmed
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  -- The feature:
Network Manager should assist the user as much as reasonably possible in
setting up a bond0 interface.

  -- Motivating scenario:
I'm watching a movie, accessed via sshfs from my desktop box over the wired
interface. I get hungry, so I decide to move my laptop to my kitchen and
continue watching the movie while cooking. The sshfs connection should
seamlessly stay alive, such that I don't have to restart mplayer.

  -- A sketch of a solution:
Look at the IP address and netmask of available interfaces. If two
interfaces lie within the same network, ask the user whether to try enabling
bonding. If yes, modprobe bonding mode=1, set up bond0, enslave eth0 and eth1
(say) with the fastest being the primary. Let the user say always bond,
always bond for $ESSID, never bond, never bond for $ESSID after testing
whether it works.

-- Taking this one step further:
Support other values of mode= for the bonds. Don't do this only for
wired+wifi, but any number of wired and wifi interfaces. Try to diagnose and
repair (or suggest repairs for) any problems that occur while trying to bond.

Sweet! Has the use-case of bonding a standard ethernet interface with
WPA[2]-protected wifi interface been included in the testing?

However, only the backend supports it, there is no way to configure it
from the applet (you'll need to write the config files manually, and
 there is little instructions yet).

Is front-end integration (i.e. applet) planned for the 0.9.4 release?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 264691] Re: NM 0.7 No option for connecting to L2TP IPSEC VPN

2011-11-06 Thread Brian J. Murrell
But why have yet another application taking up yet more system tray
space to do what NM should be doing itself? IMHO, a completely
different application for managing only l2tp-ipsec VPNs when we already
have a VPN managing application is the completely wrong approach.

This ticket is about this functionality missing in NM, not about
promoting yet another application to do what NM should be doing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 886805] [NEW] Font size override doesn't work

2011-11-06 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

If I try to use Preferences-Mail Preferences-Message Fonts (with Use
the same fonts as other applications unchecked of course) to override
the general desktop font I can only only override the message display
font and not the UI font. Meaning, I can change the selector, it just
doesn't actually change any UI fonts.

If I use gconf-editor to adjust /desktop/gnome/interface/font_name, the
evolution UI follows those changes. I don't want to change all of the
fonts on my desktop however and just want to adjust the fonts in
evolution.

I guess Omer is not Canadian, and presentation language is of low
