[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2055783] [NEW] "Unnamed" actions on Rhythmbox's icon right-click menu

2024-03-02 Thread Daniel Tang
Public bug reported:

This is from https://askubuntu.com/q/1506260/1004020 .

I'm using Rhythmbox 3.4.7 and as you can see on the picture bellow, there are
some Unnamed options on Rhythmbox's icon right-click menu:
I've tried to copy org.gnome.Rhythmbox.desktop and
org.gnome.Rhythmbox.device.desktop files data from Rhythmbox's GitLab to
/usr/share/applications (same .desktop files), but nothing has changed.
I guess that something is wrong with [Desktop Action ...] entries
I've found a solution. [Desktop Action ...] entries were missing the Name
properties

# What you expected to happen

There should not be any unnamed entries in the GNOME dock or left bar
when you right click for the context menu.
https://askubuntu.com/q/1506260/1004020

# What happened instead

The 4 unnamed entries appear in Ubuntu GNOME. Oddly they don't appear in
KDE, but this is a GNOME bug either way because Rhythmbox is made by
GNOME.

# Analysis

The self-answerer added names for the 4 desktop actions. This appeared
to fix the problem. However, the new names lack localization. One thing
is that the 4 actions will show all the time even if Rhythmbox is not
open. Based on the behaviour on KDE, I think that the GNOME developers'
original intent was to populate the 4 entries using the running
application and hide them otherwise.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2043119] Re: screen color calibration : no start button

2024-02-22 Thread Daniel Tang
Update: The button itself is tested to properly show up now. However,
it's whether the whole process works. An `sudo apt install gnome-color-
manager` may be able to fix that.

# https://askubuntu.com/questions/1504329/ubuntu-23-10-display-color-
calibration-problem#comment2639103_1504361

@DanielT I just retried displaycal, only this time I went all the way to the
end... and it failed... and the terse error looked like it was complaining that
it couldn't communicate with the color-manager, so I installed
gnome-color-manager and then displaycal worked properly when rerun. –

# Updated question https://askubuntu.com/q/1504329/1004020

Update #1 - 2/21/24:

This appears to be a bug that goes all the way back to Ubuntu 22.10. I'm
told that it works fine in 22.04, but I haven't verified that yet.

Update #2 - 2/22/24:

After implementing the patch from the answer by Daniel T (thanks BTW),
it does now get a "Start" button, but after clicking it, the color patch
remains white, and it errors out with "internal error".

See the following information from the terminal, and syslog.

I sent a MR to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2051313] Re: font-config confilcts ubuntustudio-default-settings upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04

2024-01-25 Thread Daniel Tang
Thank you Mr. Eickmeyer for your fix in 23.04.

> notice how the askubuntu question was closed? That's because it was
offtopic/for an unsupported release

AskUbuntu closes questions as off-topic *because* they want those
questions to be *posted here* instead. It says "Bug reports and problems
specific to development version of Ubuntu should be reported on
Launchpad so that developers can see, track and fix these issues."

Anyway, this bug doesn't affect me, and I might as well treat the
Invalid as Fix Committed but not released.

> won't be supported until August 2024 (upon release of 24.04.1)

Interesting! You helped me learn something today after reading
https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/upgrade-introduction . I never noticed
this as I personally upgrade to either latest or dev, never LTS
specifically. I will post a comment on AskUbuntu to relay this
information

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or

  Not my computer.

  3) What you expected to happen

  The AskUbuntu user's upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 to complete
  successfully.

  4) What happened instead

  The upgrade failed and they posted to AskUbuntu.

  # Copy of workaround in my answer body

  The problem is that 24.04 moved `/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-sub-pixel-
  rgb.conf` out of `ubuntustudio-default-settings`
  ([before](https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/all/ubuntustudio-default-
  settings/filelist),
  [after](https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/all/ubuntustudio-default-
  settings/filelist)) and into [`fontconfig-
  config`](https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/all/fontconfig-
  config/filelist). The `ubuntustudio-default-settings` package needs to
  be updated first but the maintainers forgot to add an automatic
  `Conflicts:` line.

  You can retry installing the package in the correct order by running
  `sudo apt install --upgrade ubuntustudio-default-settings`. If that
  does not work, you need to forcibly reinstall things in the correct
  order:

  ```bash
  sudo -i
  apt update
  apt download ubuntustudio-default-settings
  apt download fontconfig-config
  # Temporarily force-uninstall only ubuntustudio-default-settings
  # so that we DON'T uninstall ubuntustudio-desktop
  dpkg --force-all -r ubuntustudio-default-settings
  dpkg --force-all -i ./fontconfig-config_*
  dpkg --force-all -i ./ubuntustudio-default-settings_*
  dpkg --configure -a
  apt --fix-broken install
  apt upgrade
  apt dist-upgrade
  ```

  # Analysis

  Please apply an analogous fix. Where I mentioned `Conflicts:` on
  AskUbuntu, a `Pre-Depends:` may be necessary instead as I read
  somewhere on Launchpad.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2018439] Re: Apparmor crashes GPU acceleration

2024-01-22 Thread Daniel Tang
Hi georgiag, thank you for your command suggestion. Yes, it does fix my
issue.

I had a bunch of tabs open for months and finally closed them. After updating
Firefox and not restarting today, it seems that the postinst autoloaded the
AppArmor profile despite apparmor.service being disabled, so I had to manually
aa-teardown. I then tried to reproduce both with and without your line added.
What was frustrating was that the broken behavior failed to appear in these
cases:
1. When I added exactly 1 hash to try to comment out your line:
s/include/#include/ . Turns out you need to add two hashes (
s/include/##include/ ) for the comment to work. vim confused me as it showed it
as a green comment anyway
2. When I did mv local/usr.bin.firefox local/bak.usr.bin.firefox the profile
did not load
Anyway, when I fell back to adding and removing your entire line manually, I
could consistently confirm that your solution works. I feel safer today now
that I can reenable apparmor.service .

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1857191] Re: Dark themes don't work well with highlighted current line in gedit

2023-10-23 Thread Daniel Tang
I "fixed" this problem by switching from gedit to gnome-text-editor.
People say it's the successor to gedit and is recommended as the
default.

  This is not a theme that I would normally use so I'm not too bothered

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2017939] Re: Firefox fails to start

2023-05-03 Thread Daniel Tang

  # Expected behavior

  Firefox should not crash in WebGL aquarium and continue to work
  properly like on 22.10. It should successfully use my GPU to make
  scrolling smooths and save battery when watching videos.

  # Actual behavior

  1. Startup takes a second or two longer than usual
  2. Typing in the address bar is slow
  3. Scrolling takes 400% CPU usage
  4. Scrolling stutters
  5. VAAPI on https://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_video.asp is no longer used
as shown in intel_gpu_top
  6. Fans start spinning and battery goes down fast
  7. glxtest failures had to be manually deleted in about:config
  8. Only a few fish in WebGL aquarium
(https://webglsamples.org/aquarium/aquarium.html) load before Firefox
force-closes with the message: "Mozilla Crash Reporter Firefox had a problem
and crashed. Unfortunately, the crash reporter is unable to submit a crash
report. Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file. Close"
  9. The following lines are relevant in dmesg after clearing it:

Title:
  gnome-shell update should not request a reboot if it is not running

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The gnome-shell package requests a reboot even if no GNOME desktop is
  running.

  This reminds me too much of how Microsoft Windows only knows about
  itself. Windows assumes it is the only OS and overwrites GRUB, and now
  gnome-shell is assuming it's the only desktop environment (even
  ignoring the fact that Linux always has TTY too) and requests that
  everyone reboot even if just its users need to relog. It's also too
  much like how Windows will tell the user to restart their computer
  when just a single service needs to be restarted, while gnome-shell is
  now also telling the user to restart their computer if the just need
  to relog, possibly with a `killall5`.

  # Expected Behavior

  There should not be a reboot notification in my KDE tray after running
  apt upgrade. No gnome desktop is logged in.

  # Actual Behavior

  There is a needless reboot notification in my KDE tray.
  `/var/run/reboot-required` exists.

  $ cat /var/run/reboot-required.pkgs
  gnome-shell

  # Analysis

  In gnome-shell_43.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb there is control.tar.zst which has
postinst. In that script there is not check for whether a gnome-session is
running. Perhaps a `if ps -ef | grep -q gnome-shell; then` could be added. Even
Firefox only tells you to restart only running instances.

  # Expected Behavior

  There should not be a reboot notification in my KDE tray after running
  apt upgrade. No gnome desktop is logged in.

  # Actual Behavior

  There is a needless reboot notification in my KDE tray.

  # Analysis

  In gnome-shell_43.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb there is control.tar.zst which has
postinst. In that script there is not check for whether a gnome-session is
running. Perhaps a `if ps -ef | grep -q gnome-shell; then` could be added. Even
Firefox only tells you to restart only running instances.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1999833] [NEW] gnome-shell update should not request a reboot if it is not running

2022-12-15 Thread Daniel Tang
Public bug reported:

The gnome-shell package requests a reboot even if no GNOME desktop is
running.

This reminds me too much of how Microsoft Windows only knows about
itself. Windows assumes it is the only OS and overwrites GRUB, and now
gnome-shell is assuming it's the only desktop environment (even ignoring
the fact that Linux always has TTY too) and requests that everyone
reboot even if just its users need to relog. It's also too much like how
Windows will tell the user to restart their computer when just a single
service needs to be restarted, while gnome-shell is now also telling the
user to restart their computer if the just need to relog, possibly with
a `killall5`.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1921482] [NEW] msgcat --color=test no longer works

2021-03-26 Thread Daniel Tang
Public bug reported:

`msgcat --color=test` no longer prints anything. I rely on that package
to determine what colors a terminal supports, as does anyone using
https://askubuntu.com/a/1044802/1004020 .

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Hirsute Hippo (development branch)
Release:21.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

$ apt-cache policy gettext
gettext:

3) What you expected to happen

It should work and the output should be the same as in 20.10:

$ msgcat --color=test

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1872370] [NEW] gedit current line is illegibly highlighted on Breeze-Dark theme

2020-04-12 Thread Daniel Tang
Public bug reported:

When gedit is launched in KDE with the Breeze-Dark theme active, the
line with the cursor is highlighted white even though the text is white.
This makes it impossible to read the text.

Procedure:

1. Spin up a VirtualBox VM
2. Insert
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20200412/focal-desktop-amd64.iso
as the CD
3. Click on "Try Kubuntu"
4. Open Konsole
5. Run "sudo apt install gedit"
6. Open System Settings
7. Go into "Global Theme"
8. Select "Breeze Dark"
9. Click "Apply"
10. Click the home icon
11. Go into "Application Style"
12. Click "Configure GNOME/GTK Application Style"
13. Set both the "GTK2 theme" and "GTK3 theme" dropdowns to "Breeze-Dark"
14. Click "Apply"
15. Open gedit
16. Type some text

Expected behavior:

To be able to read the line I'm typing on.

This was the behavior before Ubuntu 20.04 unified GTK and Qt themes.
While restoring the behavior would be better than having completely
illegible text, it would be preferred to get gedit and the Breeze-Dark
theme to actually work together.

Actual behavior:

The current line is illegible. The line is highlighted white even though
the text is white.

A screenshot of this behavior is attached.

Workaround:

Move the cursor to another line before trying to read the text, or
select the text before trying to read it. This workaround is very
annoying.
