[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1496558] Re: Firefox crashes repeatedly with no apparent pattern

2015-10-18 Thread David M
Crashes continue, seemingly at random, in Firefox 41.

This crash occurred right after restarting Firefox after a previous crash,
without even reopening tabs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1496558] Re: Firefox crashes repeatedly with no apparent pattern

2015-09-20 Thread David M
Took the better part of two days, but the Mozilla release binary finally
crashed in a similar fashion. Crash report here: https://crash-
stats.mozilla.com/report/index/7f34b16b-a82f-43d8-8aef-a78982150921

Posting this here as well as on Bugzilla in case this is a bug in
another package causing Firefox to crash.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1496558] Re: Firefox crashes repeatedly with no apparent pattern

2015-09-19 Thread David M
It seems like this is a bug in the Ubuntu package since I have been
using the Mozilla release binary for a couple days now with no crashing,
including with the same ~/.mozilla/ directory and plugins.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132215] Re: rhythmbox crashes when syncing library to ipod

2013-05-14 Thread David M
Looks like code that sets an encoding property when synching was removed
for the 2.98 version. Restoring it seems to fix the problem for me. I
attached a patch file for this. Just load this up and rebuild.

2013-05-14 Thread David M
I want to note that the patch I loaded here probably re-introduces some
other bug, that this code was removed for a reason, so don't consider
this a suggestion for an official fix. But if it works around the
problem for you then feel free to use it until an official fix is found.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132215] Re: rhythmbox crashes when syncing library to ipod

2013-05-14 Thread David M
I chatted with the app owner of Rhythmbox about this. I was right about
my above patch fixing this bug but re-introducing a different bug. So
ignore that for fixing this.

He says a permanent fix was applied. So looks like Ubuntu's build
grabbed the wrong copy of Rhythmbox's source code. Looks to me like this
fix was put there a while ago. Oops! Badd Ubuntu! It's commit ID
0b3bc7d1b65af0c864a0c0803c026bb8214d71b3 of the official Rhythmbox GIT
repository, applied Nov 29 2012. Just a one line code change.

So here are the steps if you want to pull it into Ubuntu for yourself.
* Command: apt-get source rhythmmbox
(No need to sudo for getting source.)
* Unzip the source to rhythmmbox-2.98.
* Command: cd rhythmmbox-2.98
* Edit file shell/rb-track-transfer-batch.c: modify line 824 where it's setting
encoding-target, change the G_PARAM_CONSTRUCT_ONLY to G_PARAM_CONSTRUCT.
* Command: ./configure --prefix=/usr
* Command: make
* Command: sudo cp shell/.libs/rhythmbox /usr/bin/

Note, the next update from Ubuntu (hopefully with the fix) should
overwrite when you install like this.

If you don't want to overwrite the Ubuntu installation and instead want it to
live side-by-side then...
* Don't include --prefix=/usr in the .configure command listed above. Just:
./configure
* Do this command instead of sudo cp to install it: sudo make install
* At this point you launch it from shell/rhythmbox (in the source directory).
* And when you want to uninstall the side-by-side copy: sudo make uninstall

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132215] Re: rhythmbox crashes when syncing library to ipod

2013-05-01 Thread David M
Update form my last comment: looks like the timing with the Ubuntu
upgrade is coincidental. I downgraded Rhythmbox to a version that used
to work and still have the same problem. The cause seems to be if I
include my podcasts in the synch. If I uncheck that then it synchs fine,
no crash. Just so happens I decided to add a podcast around the same
time as the Ubuntu upgrade.

Here's the podcast that's causing the trouble:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/dancarlin/history?format=xml

It downloaded a file, but the MP3 download failed midstream. So I
suspect the problem is that it's trying to synch an corrupt file and
isn't handling the error gracefully. I did see something in the console
about trying to read encoding, so it might be trying to read the file
encoding to tell the iPod what sort of file it is and not getting valid
data, choking on that.

If the above theory is correct then the work-around is to try and find
what file in your music library is corrupt. Synch subsets of your
playlist and keep expanding until it crashes and you find the offending
file. If you have podcasts then start unsynching that since odds are
higher to get a corrupt file from a donwload than your library. Try
removing newly added songs from your library if it used to synch fine
prior.

Or if it's a problem with podcasting in general, a possible workaround
is to stop using Rhythmbox as a podcatcher. GTKPod does a decent job at
podcatching and iPod synching the podcast.

I'm attaching the podcast MP3 file that I think is breaking it.

** Attachment added: MP3 file that I think reproduces the bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132215] Re: rhythmbox crashes when syncing library to ipod

2013-04-30 Thread David M
Worked fine in Ubuntu 12.10 with Rhythmbox 2.97. Upgraded to 13.04 /
2.98 and now it crashes. iPod video 30 GB. Anyone found a way to
downgrade Rhythmbox to 2.97 on Ubuntu 13.04? That might be a workaround.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1153934] Re: Some radio streams which used to play OK don't play after updating to rhythmbox 2.98

2013-04-29 Thread David M
Not that it needs more confirming, but yeah, the killing of gvfsd-http
worked for me, too. If it's a bug in Rhythmbox itself then I'd be happy
to attempt a fix it if a maintainer or other expert in the source code
can give me pointers to get started. I was recently hacking the
Rhythmbox source, so it's still fresh in my head.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 952185] Re: ~/.pam_environment not parsed when HOME is encrypted

2013-01-14 Thread David M
I don't know how it is created, but I think it is more about timing.
Perhaps SSH tries to get a file handle to ~/.pam_environment and run it
itself at a point in time after the encrypted home has been mounted,
whereas perhaps the normal LightDM session login does so too early.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 993818] Re: Language selector fails to set language and regional formats on user level (Precise)

2012-11-19 Thread David M
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 952185 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/952185

Looks like this is a dupe of 584249. There's a workaround in that one
that worked for me:

session required pam_env.so

Add that line at the end of /etc/pam.d/common-session is supposed to
force it to read the ~/.pam_environment after an encrypted $HOME is
mounted. Maybe that's all Ubuntu needs to do in its distro to fix this
bug? Not sure what any side effects might be, but so far everything is
working awesome for me with that fix.

Title:
Language selector fails to set language and regional formats on user
  level (Precise)

Status in “language-selector” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin (64 bit) last weekend
and noticed that changing the display language and regional formats
via language selector does not have any effect unless changes are
  applied system-wide.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. On a clean Precise install, navigate to System Settings - Language support
  2. Select desired display language (e.g. German) by moving it to the top of
the list; select desired regional format setting (e.g. German/Germany) from the
Regional Formats tab
  3. Log out and back in, open a terminal and run locale

  Expected result:
Display language and regional formats are set according to user's choice --
i.e. here German and German/Germany. Terminal shows that all locale variables
are set to de and de_DE respectively.

  What happened instead:
The display language remains set to (American) English and terminal reports
that locale variables remain set to en and en_US. The system does not
honour the settings applied through language-selector.

  Workaround:
Clicking Apply system-wide on both the Language and the Regional
Formats tabs on language-selector will change the language for the whole
system. This will also apply the respective language settings on the user
level. In my case this is no problem, as I am the only one using this system.
But this is certainly not a solution for multi-user setups.

  System information:
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin), 64 bit
  Language selector version: 0.79
Hardware: ThinkPad Edge 13, Intel i5 CPU

2012-11-19 Thread David M
I confirmed that the above work-around (adding session required
pam_env.so to /etc/pam.d/common-session) works great. Perhaps that's all
Ubuntu needs to do to fix this bug? Not sure if there are any negative
side effects, but so far I'm not experiencing any.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1027448] [NEW] Can't use compose key at login screen's password entry

2012-07-21 Thread David M
Public bug reported:

My /etc/default/keyboard file (attached) has this:
XKBOPTIONS=compose:ralt

The XKBOPTIONS line allowed me to use the compose key in the LightDM
password entry box so I could have a more secure password. It was
working fine. But a recent update came through and now the compose key
isn't working in LightDM. Now I can't login!

I can login using GDM, because Gnome has its own separate compose key
config and it loads that. And I can login via SSH. So I know that the
password wasn't corrupted. I also see in LightDM that no masked bullet
is typed when I do my compose key sequence. That leads me to believe
that the issue is LightDM not doing the compose key.

Also wanted to note that this is the second time this sort of thing has
negatively impacted me. First time was when LightDM replaced GDM, because it
didn't load the GDM kaymap file and I had to waste a bunch of time figuring out
about the XKBOPTIONS in /etc/default/keyboard. That case was not really a bug
but rather a sloppy oversight in the transition to LightDM. Point is Ubuntu
should pay attention to this with new LightDM releases. Being unable to login
is an extremely negative experience. I've used Ununtu for less than a year and
this has been messed up twice. Yet I've had compose-key passwords in Mac OS for
*years* with no problems.
