[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1241282] Re: [regression] Wall: keyboard bindings for 'Move up Move down' are being set to shift+super+prior shift+super+next' for Move with window with wall'

2013-11-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Also, the description of the shortcuts you get when pressing and holding
super in the overlay cheat-sheet is wrong - it says:

ctrl + alt + left + arrow... switches workspaces
shift + ctrl + alt + left... moves focused window to another workspace

Should read:

ctrl + alt + arrowswitches workspaces
shift + ctrl + alt + arrow moves focused window to another workspace

(I know it's not the same thing, but it's sort of related)

 It's good, Dražen.

But I mean normal safely remove which switches USB-flash LED off and spins
 down external USB-HDD.
This functionality is missed now (starting from Ubuntu 12.10).
But non-user-friendly udisks --detach /dev/sdX works normally.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220472] [NEW] USA keyboard layout - ctrl + z and ctrl + y replaced

2013-09-03 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

I change between two keyboard layouts - Croatian (a typical European
layout where 'z' is located between 'u' and 't') and US. In most program
this works fine, but I noticed that in Inkscape this change doesn't
affect the Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+Y undo/redo combination. Whether I am in Croatian
or US - the same physical keys perform the undo action (the 'Croatian'
ones (which is my primary layout) - the key between 'u' and 't' does
undo). It doesn't manifest in the rest of Inkscape, though - I can
normally write in the chosen layout in e.g. a text box on the canvas.

Expected - changing to the US layout should also change the layout for
the purposes of undo/redo shortcuts.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 947281] Re: Lock Screen should directly turn off backlight without waiting ...

2013-08-05 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Actually, I noticed that the normal screen saver (activated by the OS
after no activity for a certain time, not manually activated using e.g.
`gnome-screensaver-command -a` or `xset dpms force off`) successfully
turns off keyboard backlight and additional lights (e.g. the Apple logo
light on the back of Macbooks).

Maybe it would be enough to make the lock screen command activate the
screen saver in the same manner the OS activates it after a certain
amount of non-activity.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1113420] Re: Alt+key window menu shortcuts cannot be disabled

2013-06-05 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Woohoo! It seems that this is already possible! I just read this comment
on an SO question

http://askubuntu.com/questions/124815/how-do-i-enable-emacs-keybindings-
in-google-chrome#comment332725_233539

System Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts tab - Windows section - Disable
Activate the window menu

Although this is only alt+space initially, disabling it removes all the
alt+key window menu shorcuts. Since this is the case, this bug report
can be aimed at making that description clearer.

Currently, though, alt is hardcoded to activate window menu entries
(such as alt+F for the file menu, alt+E for the edit menu) and
there is no way to surpass this functionality in all the applications.
Personally, I find these shortcuts quite useless - they take you to

What I would like to see is a global option to disable these alt+key menu

option would also remove the first-letter underlining in the menu to indicate

False alarm, it doesn't really work :(

It seemed to be working for Chromium, but not for all applications.
Seems that Chromium didn't have these shortcut menu items - just alt+f
mapping to its options.

In the terminal application in specific, you can disable the menu shortcuts
it in the options (otherwise I don't know how would I edit long commands).
See:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/30224/how-to-disable-the-alt-hotkey-
behavior-on-gnome-terminal

For all the other applications, though, it is not possible to free
alt-shortcuts for other uses.

Title:
Alt+key window menu shortcuts cannot be disabled

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I find the alt key ergonomically very useful (it can be pressed with
a thumb without moving any of the letter fingers) and I would like
to use it for many custom keyboard shortcuts (there is a reason why it
plays such a big role in Emacs and the whole OS X for that matter).

Currently, though, alt is hardcoded to activate window menu entries
(such as alt+F for the file menu, alt+E for the edit menu) and
there is no way to surpass this functionality in all the applications.
Personally, I find these shortcuts quite useless - they take you to
copy, paste, and open file which have standard shortcuts anyway
(with the exception of preferences, which for some reason don't have a
standardized shortcut even though that's often the only thing a person
  looks for up there).

  Expected behaviour
  -

What I would like to see is a global option to disable these alt+key menu
shortcuts to free up the alt key for other uses (similar to the option
already available in gnome-terminal, only global). Preferably, activating this
option would also remove the first-letter underlining in the menu to indicate
to users that they can't acess it through shortcuts.

(I marked nautilus for apport to collect my version numbers, but this affects
most applications - didn't know what the right target is)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1178336] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when copying folders accesed through bookmarks

2013-05-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

I open some folder A through its bookmark entry in the sidebar.
Nautilus crashes when I try to select one of A's children folders and
copy/paste it in the same location (ctrl+c/ctrl+v and right click

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067876] Re: Missing Safely Remove Drive option from Quicklists. Only have Eject.

2013-04-29 Thread Dražen Lučanin
And another issue from my point of view that Norbert forgot to mention -
when your external hard drive has several partitions (which I think is
quite common nowadays, with multi-TB sizes), there is no more an option to
remove the whole device with a single action. This used to be the safely
remove drive option.

Instead, one has to right-click - eject every partition on it (quite
cumbersome for my 4 partitions, especially since I have to discern them by
name from my internal HD partitions used for Windows).

On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 11:05 AM, Norbert
1067...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote:

 Hello, Sebastien!

 I’ll summarize my posts here.

My main linux distro is Ubuntu 12.04 and I think that Ubuntu is the best
distro and will fix the bug #1 soon :)

In Ubuntu 12.04, Gentoo stable, Debian 6 and Debian 7 safely remove
works for both USB-flash and USB-HDD.

In Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 (even with Gnome 3.8 from ppa); OpenSuse 12.3
and Tumbleweed; Fedora 18 and 19; Sabayon 11 safely remove does not
exist or does not work as before.

I did some tests at my free time for Ubuntu and linux community. It
seems that this bug is not Ubuntu-oriented, it is distro-wide.

We have 94 users affected by this bug here (they does not make as much
buzz as me) and some in other bug-trackers.

I tested 4 USB-flashes and 1 USB-HDD on different PCs and distros (see my
table at Google Docs for product names and USB VIDs and PIDs -
 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ao5e713Ig9g_dEtqbmhOVnJuVmRmOEx1QXpMSncwbEE#gid=0).

 1. USB flashes
I understand that removing unmounted (and synced) flash is quite safely
operation. But in 12.04 (and other distros) flash led switched off after
Safely remove. For me it is more comfortable to remove flash which LED is
 switched off.

In Ubuntu 13.04 I see Safely remove entry for only one my USB flash
(Kingston DataTraveller G2 16 GB), and it works as expected (after
pressing Safely remove LED on flash switched off, flash is removed from
 lsusb, fdisk -l and gnome-disks).

For 3 other flashes I see only Eject option. After pressing Eject LED on
flash is switced on, flash is removed from fdisk -l, but still exists in
lsusb and gnome-disks). After Eject I can not switch USB-flash manually
 (by udisks --detach).

 2. USB HDDs
In Ubuntu 13.04 there is no way to spin down USB-HDD from GUI. I can spin
down HDD only from console with udisks --detach. There is a Safely remove
option in Nautilus window, but it does not spin down the drive. It removes
drive from lsusb, fdisk -l and gnome-disks, but plates are rotating. I
understand that SATA HDD are hot-swappable, but it’s not comfortable for me
 to remove rotating hard-drive.

So I hope that convenient safely remove will be back in next releases of
 major distros and Ubuntu.

I prefer LTS versions of Ubuntu - I use 12.04, and safely remove works in
 it as I expect.
If you does not believe my results - you can repeat these tests by
 yourself.

  my external hard drive.

However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, this option is no longer
available in the context menus (Quicklists) for external drives.

Instead, all I see is Unmount, and after clicking Unmount the icon

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1113447] Re: Starting a Flash video disables keyboard shortcuts

2013-03-11 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Yeah, that's probably so. Also, I'm thinking Flash games (if anyone
plays those these days) wouldn't be playable if some keystrokes were
interpreted by the browser.

Still, it would be nice if some wide-used browser key combos such as
ctrl+T or ctrl+L got caught by the browser. For example in OS X I find
that this works - cmd+L jums directly to the nav bar.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1119337] [NEW] Copy file to desktop sends it off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area

2013-02-08 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

Similar to Bug #389519 that was fixed, but the effect is still visible
when copying files from Nautilus to the desktop. The file icon can end
up off-screen and become inaccessible (it can only be reached by going
to the Desktop folder in Nautilus).

Expected behaviour - this void space should not exist at all. Nothing
should be able to go there - copied files included. The desktop should
only consist of what is visible on the screens.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 995111] Re: Print failure since upgrade to 12.04

2013-02-07 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Something similar happening to me with cups 1.6.1-0ubuntu11. The test
page prints fine, but when I try to print a pdf from evince, I get the
1st page printed relatively OK, but with many artifacts making it
readable and the second page only lists:

ERROR:
undefined
OFFENDING COMMAND:
Undefined
STACK:

etc.

I tried different drivers (IPP, JetDirect) and they're all the same. The
printer used to work fine some time before (I can't say when exactly,
probably back in 12.04).

Since upgrade to 12.04 LTS have had difficulty printing which persists even

Bug description:
  In Ubuntu 12.04, I could right-click on my usb-external-harddrive's
Unity-Task-Bar icon (launcher icon) and select Safely Remove. Upon
doing this, the icon would disappear and I would proceed in unplugging
  my external hard drive.

However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, this option is no longer
available in the context menus (Quicklists) for external drives.

Instead, all I see is Unmount, and after clicking Unmount the icon
remains on the task-bar (launcher) and no indication is given that
would imply that the unmount occurred successfully.

The intent of this report is to bring back the Safely Remove option
which (by making the icon disappear after selected) indicates that you
may now safely removal your USB external hard drive (by unplugging its
  usb connector).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1113420] [NEW] Alt+key window menu shortcuts cannot be disabled

2013-02-02 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

I find the alt key ergonomically very useful (it can be pressed with a
thumb without moving any of the letter fingers) and I would like to
use it for many custom keyboard shortcuts (there is a reason why it
plays such a big role in Emacs and the whole OS X for that matter).

Currently, though, alt is hardcoded to activate window menu entries
(such as alt+F for the file menu, alt+E for the edit menu) and there
is no way to surpass this functionality in all the applications.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1113447] [NEW] Starting a Flash video disables keyboard shortcuts

2013-02-02 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

When I click play on a Youtube video, Firefox doesn't respond to
keyboard shortcuts any more, even though it's shown to be the active
window. Before I can get it to react to e.g. ctrl+L to let me enter
something in the Awesome bar, I have to pick up my mouse, click
somewhere on the webpage outside the Flash video and only then can I
start entering keyboard shortcuts again.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081740] Re: Every tab named New Tab

2013-01-21 Thread Dražen Lučanin
You can mark this as invalid or fixed as far as I'm concerned - it was
due to one of my plugins, indeed. Going back to a vanilla Firefox
removed the issue.

Cheers,
Dražen

Yes, it is as if some elements used for scrolled windows respect the

I can confirm this bug is still relevant, at least on Ubuntu 12.10 on a
Gazelle Professional laptop from System76 (has Ubuntu preinstalled).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1094389] [NEW] Default synaptics settings not the best for Apple trackpads

2012-12-28 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu on a Macbook Pro. The trackpad was working out-of-
the box, but it didn't run quite as smooth as it could. My palm wouldn't
be recognised while typing and when I would use two-finger scrolling my
two fingers would get recognised as three fingers here and there (when
they get to a poistion more parallel to the trackpad, with the largest
finger area touching it) which would cause quite a few accidental
clicks, windows misbehaves (as the 3-finger click and drag somehow
switches windows by default in ginn) etc.

As a result, I had to find out about synclient and the settings it
offers. This blog post helped me a lot

http://uselessuseofcat.com/?p=74

What proved to work for me is
 - palm detection on
 - MaxFinger 50

I set this by creating an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-synaptics.conf with
the following contents:

Section InputClass
  Identifier touchpad
  Driver synaptics
  MatchIsTouchpad on
  MatchDevicePath /dev/input/event*
  Option PalmDetect on
  Option FingerHigh 50
EndSection

I think these (or close to these) settings should be set as the default
in Ubuntu for Macbook trackpads. If not, they should at least be
accessible in the mouse touchpad menu in the control center to save
others from the same pains. Also, the sensitivity option in the control
center is not doing anything - only the acceleration slider has any
effect.

It would be great if Apple trackpads would be tweaked to work more
nicely in Ubuntu, as I think this is (with also maybe multi-monitor
handling and battery life) the only remaining big reason not to switch
from OS X to Ubuntu on Apple hardware. This is a problem many users are
facing, which can be seen from the 20 thank you comments on the
aforementioned blog post (I can only imagine how many other people went
back to their OS X without bothering to search tech blogs to tweak their
drivers). There are some nice projects out there, such as Touchegg and
Ginn, but even after playing with compiling the source, Touchegg it is
still very difficult to get running in Ubuntu. What I'm trying to say
is, there are recipes and separate projects out there and it would be
great if someone with a wider grasp of the technologies involved
collected the best parts and integrated them in future Ubuntu packages.
Especially now, that Ubuntu is spreading towards other touch-aware
devices such as tablets :)

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1076955] Re: Display options stuck on only one screen icon

2012-12-13 Thread Dražen Lučanin
NP. So, I have an external monitor attached and I want to edit some
settings (e.g. change the resolutions). When I enter the displays options
in the control center I can click on one of the screen icons and edit this
screen's settings normally. If I then want to select the other screen to
edit its settings, however, I am unable to do so. Clicking on the other
screen's icon doesn't do anything.

Instead, I must go back to the main view of the control center and re-enter
the displays settings to be able to select the other screen. Once again, I
can't switch to the other screen's settings and the cycle continues.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067876] Re: [quantal] Missing Safely Remove Drive and Eject options from Quicklists. Only have Unmount.

2012-12-07 Thread Dražen Lučanin
If there can't be a safely remove option, could you at least add an
unmount all partitions on device option or something similar so that
people don't have to right-click and unmount X partitions separately before
they can unplug the device? I'm guessing it can't be that hard to find
other partitions mounted from a certain device if one has been selected.

Anyway, from all the machines with Linux installed I've worked on over the
years I haven't once encountered an internally wired USB device and I have
to deal with my multi-TB external disks and their numerous partitions
daily. I think that a mistake of forgetting to unmount one of 6-7
partitions and causing the loss of data greatly outweights having to reboot
your machine if you accidentaly unmount an internally wired CD drive or
something.

On Fri, Dec 7, 2012 at 7:01 AM, Blair Zimmer bmaz...@gmail.com wrote:

Martin Pitt (pitti) wrote on 2012-11-13: #13
The safe remove functionality was removed from udisks2, and it's not
planned to bring it back. It caused too much trouble with e. g. devices
which are internally wired to an USB port, and you could never use them
again until after a reboot. Also, having two options was a constant source
of confusion. So I'm afraid this is wontfix from the distro side.

Martin, There is myself and I am sure many others who find this
justification unacceptable! I have several systems in which devices
are connected internally via USB headers/ports. Yes, the option does
exist, be it Ubuntu 12.04.1, Windows XP-7, etc. to safely remove these
devices via a right-click, even though they are devices that would not
normally require such action. Examples of these devices are a wireless
N network adapter, an internal media card reader with USB port, etc.
Quite frankly, it comes down to a user exercising diligence when right-
clicking on any device and knowing what device it is that they are about
to safely remove beforehand! Saying that it causes too much trouble for
devices that would then require a reboot to use again is in my opinion,
a cop-out! It is a chance that most users would be willing to take, to
err on the side of caution when it comes to properly powering down a
device first before removing it! If it is a choice between having the
safely remove command available to remove a device properly by
completely powering it down or not having the safely remove command
available at all in an attempt to eliminate the confusion that exists in
correlation to the eject/unmount commands while helping to prevent some
users from accidentally removing the wrong device, I think the majority
of users do not find it as confusing as you implicate. I and others I
am sure would rather have the option to safely power down our devices
using the safely remove command and thus this is a request to have it
formally reinstated. This too, has prevented me from upgrading to
 Ubuntu 12.10!

Also, the safely remove option would recognise if the external drive had

Expected behaviour - Expected behaviour - when Unity detects that the

Done. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1081740

Sorry, I was reporting several bugs at the same time so I got mixed up.
Also, bug reporting is not so user friendly any more.

Also, I've noticed that I unfortunately can't reproduce the bug
willingly. During some sessions it works normally, while during others I
get all new tabs.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081740] Re: Every tab named New Tab

2012-11-21 Thread Dražen Lučanin
OK, thanks for the tip. I disabled the multiple tabs add-on and fixed the
permissions. I'll see if it helps.

BTW, where did you find the messages about the wrong permissions? I can't
find it in any of the files I attached. Is that something that I
automatically sent in one of the crash reports?

On Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 9:09 PM, Chris Coulson
chris.coul...@canonical.comwrote:

You've got a lot of addons installed, and at least this one looks
 suspicious:

 * Multiple Tab Handler - ID=multiple...@piro.sakura.ne.jp,
 Version=0.7.2012111301, minVersion=10.0, maxVersion=19.0a1, Location
 =app-profile, Type=extension, Foreign=No, Visible=Yes,
 BinaryComponents=No, StrictCompat=No, Active=Yes

In addition to that, you've got files in your profile folder that are
owned by the wrong user. The most likely cause of this is having
previously ran Firefox with sudo, which is always a bad idea:

  startupCache (0o755, wrong owner)
  startupCache/startupCache.8.little (0o644, wrong owner)
  zotero/translators/RIS.js (0o644, wrong owner)

Having files with the wrong ownership in your profile will break things
 in strange ways.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1076956] Re: No help-report bug menu entry

2012-11-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
OK, I just noticed that it's been pushed to dev releases only.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Not such a good move in my opinion - it prevents regular users from
having a user-friendly way of reporting bugs, without knowing that
System Settings is actually called gnome-control-center. Help -
report problem was really a nice way of doing it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1076990] [NEW] Nautilus hanging

2012-11-09 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, I started experience this happening.
It sometimes happens that Nautilus hangs. It's eating 100% of my CPU,
the window is darkened, I can't do anything on the desktop etc.

top output:

PIDUSER PR NI VIRTRES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

help. After some time it can get ok once again, while sometimes I have

Title:
Wrong resolutions in lightdm login screen when using external monitor
  connected to laptop

Status in “unity-greeter” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
When booting with an external monitor attached, the external monitor shows a
stretched-out display, which the laptop monitor shows two black bars on each
side of a lesser-resolution GDM display. This problem persists after logging in
and is illustrated by these pictures:
  GDM display:

  In-session display:
  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/80418884/IMG_20110920_091318.jpg

It's rather common to boot with the screen connected, so the use case
for this really is problematic as the Ubuntu splash doesn't look right
when a workstation is started like this. I happen to be in an
environment where everyone runs Windows and cosmetic details like this
  really undermine confidence in Ubuntu.

This was also tested with a 11.10 nightly 3 weeks ago. I have to use
the monitors utility every-time the system is rebooted to adjust
  resolutions.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1045281] [NEW] Selected color profile won't stay applied

2012-09-03 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Public bug reported:

When I select a new color profile for a screen in the color menu of the
control center it goes back to the default after a reboot. When I go to
select it again in the color menu, it shows the right colors on the
screen for approx. 1 second and then flips back to the default profile
(the radio button stays on the new profile, though).

Expected behaviour - the color profile should stay the same after a
reboot. Selecting a new profile in the color menu should stick and not
flip back after 1 second.

To reproduce:
- add and select a new profile in the color menu
- restart the machine
- the profile is not applied any more and you can't select it in the options
for longer than 1 second

Title:
Selected color profile won't stay applied

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I select a new color profile for a screen in the color menu of
the control center it goes back to the default after a reboot. When I
go to select it again in the color menu, it shows the right colors on
the screen for approx. 1 second and then flips back to the default
profile (the radio button stays on the new profile, though).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 232172] Re: MASTER no wlan option for pppoe configuration

2012-08-29 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Still no answer? Isn't somebody maintaining network-manager monitoring
these comments? Because there isn't a stable, supported method to
establish a PPPoW connection in Ubuntu, I am unable to use it at all in
certain locations, which is making my work difficult as Ubuntu is my
main OS. Also, as I am trying to popularize Ubuntu with other people, I
have to cope with pppd and its quirks on their machines as well.

pppd is behaving very unstable on my main laptop, breaking the ppp
connection every couple of minutes and freezing, making me do this way
too often:

sudo poff -a
sudo kill -9 `pidof pppd gpppon`
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
sudo restart network-manager

(otherwise I can't reestablish the connection and even like this I have
to wait for some time for DNS to start treating me nicely again)

It's not up to the network, as on the same machine on OS X it works
smoothly.

Having a functional internet connection is an **essential** part of an
OS. I really think that one road to connecting to the internet shouldn't
be marked as a whishlist for 4 years, basically making it unsupported
and left to end users to meddle with low-level tools that are hard to
understand. The process of controlling this daemon, redialing if it's
not working etc. is something that (at least in my eyes) falls in the
domain of network-manager.

I hope this will grab somebody's attention and help in advancing the bug
past the whishlist state. If this starts making way towards a new
feature, I'd be more than happy to test it and provide feedback.

Cheers,
Dražen

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 232172] Re: MASTER no wlan option for pppoe configuration

2012-08-04 Thread Dražen Lučanin
Bump.

Two years later and I still have to struggle with setting up a PPP
connection in Ubuntu. Is there any chance this might get fixed one day?
It can be done very easily through a GUI in OS X and Windows, but in
Ubuntu I have to go through the same *setup_using_pppoeconf-
break_other_connections-happen_uppon_this_old_hack* loop every time I
have to set up someboy's computer on this kind of access network.

I mean, I know this is a corner case, but it still counts towards
building an image for Ubuntu. If you're trying to impress somebody to
become a new user and he sees you have to do some terminal mumble-jumble
to set up his/her net connection, it definitely doesn't seem as nice as
simply doing 3 clicks in a GUI.

Surely it wouldn't be a big patch for somebody who has some insights
about the inner workings of Network manager.

Cheers for nm stability other than that! This is the only major bug I
noticed :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 334125] Re: Search not showing hidden files

I also see this as a serious bug - the only way to search for some
hidden files (which can be important, such as .conf files) is through a
terminal.
