Public bug reported:

Hi,

mutter (46.0-1ubuntu6)
gnome-shell (46.0-0ubuntu3.1)
VRR activated in dconf/mutter

I do not get VRR in Display tab of g-c-c, for my external monitor or my
laptop's display alone.
I did restart my computer after VRR was activated in dconf.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059786] [NEW] [noble] Huge prompt for encrypted disk pwd

2024-03-29 Thread Francois Thirioux
Public bug reported:

Hi,

plymouth (24.004.60-1ubuntu6) noble

I get a huge prompt asking my luks-encrypted disk, at early start-up.

Seems to be linked to screen resolution as I experience this bug only on
my 2560x1440 external screen, not the 1900x1200 one. Only 1 monitor is
active in both cases.

2024-02-08 Thread Francois Thirioux
Ok. First at all sorry: I was thinking about Firefox, that shows the same issue!
But I can reproduce in TB too (so the issue is not directly FF or TB-related?).

1) make two ODT files
2) compress them to ZIP
3) send yourself an email with ZIP as attachment
4) open this ZIP with file roller
5) double click on one of the both files (open with LibreOffice)
6) audit: type=1400 audit(1707394260.979:341): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="open" class="file" profile="snap.libreoffice.writer" name=2F68...474
pid=7299 comm="soffice.bin" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=1000
ouid=1000

I do use Noble with TB snap 115.7 in GNOME Shell.

  realize this could be a GNOME (including gdm?) issue. That's not a
  hardware failure as W11+hdmi is working with on-demand. That's not
  Nvidia-535 related since I get the same bug using Nouveau.

  - Using Nvidia dGPU: all is ok (well, in a X11 session!)

  - Using dynamic graphics:
  --- Nvidia gpu is not listed in g-c-c system details (only Intel gpu is
listed)
  --- App menu's option to launch with dGPU is missing
  --- HDMI monitor is not detected

  When I boot, I notice in gdm's screen that my monitor is not activated
  (full black). It is when I use Nvidia dGPU-only mode. So that's not
  only a GS stuff, as far as I can see.

  I get this related to Nvidia in logs:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2034895] [NEW] [Mantic] No system-config-printer button in Printers tab

2023-09-08 Thread Francois Thirioux

At least, system-config-printer should be offered in apps list, not only in
command line.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2033059] Re: Unable to add a printer

2023-09-07 Thread Francois Thirioux
(Mantic)
I still do not see any system-config-printer button in g-c-c printers tab.
Is that intended?
I can launch s-c-p from command line, though.

  When writing into text fields in some applications (Firefox, VS Code)
  on Jammy in a GNOME / Wayland session, I can see an effect best
  described as the glyphs appearing / disappearing sometimes repeatedly.
  I have attached a recording from my phone (since attempting to record
  a screencast fails).

  This doesn't happen always, and it appear somehow sensitive to some
  environmental condition (load?) since for example when I'm on a video
  call, the effect seems to not be happening so often.

  I have also experienced a few instances of a currently not-focused
  window disappearing (seeing through to a window that is below that
  window), but cannot reproduce that reliably.

  I have the NVIDIA driver 510 in use, RTX3090-only 16-core Zen1
  Threadripper system with no integrated GPU.

  No similar effects visible when in a GNOME / Xorg session.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2013542] Re: [lunar] windows size/position is not saved for some apps

2023-09-01 Thread Francois Thirioux
Clearly I do experience this bug only using X11 (at the moment I have to
use Nvidia + X11 since Intel hdmi seems to be broken in new 6.5 kernel
and Nvidia + Wayland leads to an unusable desktop because of erratic
keyboard entries, erratic menu item selection and so on, e.g. with
Firefox snap).

Bug description:
  Hi,

  Lunar up to date, Intel+Nvidia GPUs, Ubuntu Wayland or X11 session,
  hybrid or discrete graphics.

  If I click on a snap dash icon, nothing happens.
  Tested with Thunderbird, Firefox, Shortwave...
  (VS Code seems ok, maybe due to classic confinment?)

  I can launch without issue Chrome (deb), Synaptic, GNOME apps, etc.

  Recent updates included gnome-shell and libadwaita.

  I get this type of log for all problematic snaps:

  /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service/app.slice/app-gnome-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2012733] Re: [lunar] [X11] Adwaita instead of Yaru in non GNOME apps

2023-03-26 Thread Francois Thirioux
Using a 200 % scaled 4K display, I see that the header bars of these
buggy apps is small and not scaled (I mean fonts AND header bar itself).
GNOME apps are themed and scaled as intended.

Nvidia dGPU only mode, Lunar, GS 44 rc

1) run night light, external monitor only

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2009687] Re: [lunar] Nvidia GPU unused but still powered

2023-03-20 Thread Francois Thirioux
I do not experience this issue anymore (GS 44rc, 6.2 kernel, 525 Ubuntu main
driver).
Using powertop does not seem to be reliable but looking at GNOME's energy
panel, estimated remaining time seems ok. But it varies often with a 0.5 factor
(without any visible reason).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2012034] [NEW] [lunar] Odd switches behavior in Ubuntu Desktop tab (g-c-c 44 rc)

2023-03-17 Thread Francois Thirioux
Public bug reported:

Hi,

0) all 3 Ubuntu extensions disabled
1) open g-c-c (44rc)
2) go to Ubuntu Desktop tab
3) I see only a (new) switch (off) for "Tiling Assistant"
4) I do not see any other switch for Dock nor Icons
5) turn on the Tiling switch
6) 2 other switches appear for the Dock and Icons parts
7) odd!  :-)

Should be great to always see these 3 very convenient switches.

Title:
  [lunar] Odd switches behavior in Ubuntu Desktop tab (g-c-c 44 rc)

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

  0) all 3 Ubuntu extensions disabled
  1) open g-c-c (44rc)
  2) go to Ubuntu Desktop tab
  3) I see only a (new) switch (off) for "Tiling Assistant"
  4) I do not see any other switch for Dock nor Icons
  5) turn on the Tiling switch
  6) 2 other switches appear for the Dock and Icons parts
  7) odd!  :-)

  Should be great to always see these 3 very convenient switches.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1987209] Re: gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes when screen locker activates (jj)

2022-08-21 Thread Francois Lafont
Test suggested by oria on IRC: try "nomodeset" in kernel parameter and
try to reproduce the problem.

After the reboot:

```
$ uname -a
Linux flhpz4 5.15.0-46-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 4 18:03:25 UTC 2022
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.15.0-46-generic root=/dev/mapper/vg0-system ro quiet
splash vt.handoff=7 nomodeset
```

Remarks:

1. During the login, the choice "Ubuntu on Xorg" appears no longer (I
don't know why). I can choose only "Openbox" or "Ubuntu". And I have
chosen "Ubuntu" of course.

2. I have only one monitor which works (the HP monitor). The other
monitor (Asus) is just ignored.

And in this case, the automatic lock screen works correctly. I can find
my running appli after a re-login.

Title:
  gnome-shell (Wayland) crashes when screen locker activates (jj)

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

  On my Ubuntu 22.04 (migrated from 20.04 few days ago), I have a
  problem with the automatic lock screen which doesn't lock my session
  but closes it (and all opened applications in my session are closed
  too of course). In fact, I think the session is not really closed but
  there is some crash of gnome shell (see below).

  Maybe it's important, I have *2* monitors (more convenient for my
  tired eyes):

  * HP 24er (24")
  * ASUS MX279 (27")

  Theses 2 monitors are connected via a HDMI port, each on a dedicated
  card "Radeon Pro WX 3100" (1 card per monitor, so I have 2 same model
  cards "Radeon Pro WX 3100").

  Here is my setting in "Privacy" > "Screen", to test quickly the
  automatic lock screen:

  ```
  Blank Screen Delay: 1 minute
  Automatic Screen Lock:
  Automatic Screen Lock Delay: 30 seconds
  Lock Screen on Suspend:
  Show Notifications on Lock Screen:
  ```

  Note: I have tested with a fresh and new Unix account, just created
  for the test (by `sudo adduser foo`) and the problem is present too.

  Below, you can see the output of the `journalctl -eb` where:

  1. about ~13:02:50, screens begins to be blank,
  2. about ~13:03:20, the automatic lock screen should start.

  As you can see below, "Aug 21 13:03:19 => gnome-shell: segfault":

This is perfectly summarized.

FYI, the problem doesn't appear if I lock my session manually with
"Windows-L".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1987209] [NEW] Automatic lock screen doesn't lock my session but closes it because of a gnome-shell crash

2022-08-21 Thread Francois Lafont
Public bug reported:

Hi,

On my Ubuntu 22.04 (migrated from 20.04 few days ago), I have a problem
with the automatic lock screen which doesn't lock my session but closes
it (and all opened applications in my session are closed too of course).
In fact, I think the session is not really closed but there is some
crash of gnome shell (see below).

Maybe it's important, I have *2* monitors (more convenient for my tired
eyes):

* HP 24er (24")
* ASUS MX279 (27")

```
Blank Screen Delay: 1 minute
Automatic Screen Lock:
Automatic Screen Lock Delay: 30 seconds
Lock Screen on Suspend:
Show Notifications on Lock Screen:
```

Note: I have tested with a fresh and new Unix account, just created for
the test (by `sudo adduser foo`) and the problem is present too.

Below, you can see the output of the `journalctl -eb` where:

1. about ~13:02:50, screens begins to be blank,
2. about ~13:03:20, the automatic lock screen should start.

As you can see below, "Aug 21 13:03:19 => gnome-shell: segfault":

I don't see TB in Calendar as available default app.
I remember it should be possible now?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2022-04-07 Thread Francois Thirioux
I hit this bug in Jammy, up to date including GS 42.0 latest.
See attachment.

I noticed it because Dock from Dash extension relies on windows count to
switch to app or to overview...

  Using Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute) that starts in Wayland, by default.
  Thunderbird version: 78.11.0 with "gnome-support" package.
  Same problem in safe mode.
  Description:
  By default in this context, TB is a Wayland task.
  When opening a compose windows (or reply or transfer), sending mail
apparently close the windows, but gnome shell continue to show multiple
"points", as if multiple windows are still active.
  And after closing TB, it seems maintained in the same state, so it becomes
impossible to relaunch it from the desk. But task manager of "looking glass"
does not show it and it is possible to launch from terminal.
  Provisional solution:
  Modify .desktop file to launch with --display=:0 option, that force to use
XWayland interface, as shown by xlsclients (for example).
  But it is actually a bug under Wayland context, that also badly interfer with
many add-ons or extensions.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1951698] Re: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved

2022-04-05 Thread Francois Thirioux
This bug is marked as fixed upstream:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1710344
but it did come back (maybe in FF 97 snap ?).

Well that's a very very annoying bug, as UI bookmarks management is completely
broken.
Since snap version is now default in Jammy, that's a problem.

  When running firefox on wayland, it appears to be impossible to move
  bookmark items in the menu bar sub menus.

  How to reproduce:

  * haver a gnome session with wayland
  * have the menu bar toolbar activated
  * have a folder in the menu bar
  * have multiple bookmarks in that folder
  * click on the folder icon in the menu bar, when it opens, try to drag and
drop the item to put it into another position - e.g. from the last to the first

  Expected result:

  * the bookmark item is move to the new position - this is waht happens
  when doing these steps with firefox on gnome with an xorg sessions.

  Actual result: the item stays where it was.

  similarly, i cannot drag and drop a new bookmark into a folder and out
  it into the position where I want to have it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1965507] [NEW] [jammy] New GS 42 colors management leaves GNOME session incomplete

2022-03-18 Thread Francois Thirioux
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Playing with new GS colors... Thanks for that moment.

Well, that new feature is cool in Ubuntu session.
But in GNOME session, you do not have any Appearance tab in g-c-c.

In a GNOME session, you can change colors back through Tweaks, anyway, after
have set them in an Ubuntu session.
But I did not find how to change the Shell light/dark variant (without dconf).
So I get "this wallpaper will only apply for the light style" under the
wallpaper's image in corresponding g-c-c, but I cannot change the Shell style.

Would it be possible to make the light/dark new shell style selection
available for GNOME session? Or having a light/dark shell style
selection in Tweaks?

  When lock is enabled, the screen doesn't get blank/covered by
  lockscreen before suspending, thus on early resume the content might
  be shown.

  Video showing the bug: https://youtu.be/dDOgtK1MldI

  Reproduced on Ubuntu 2015.10, Ubuntu 2014.04

  [Test case]

  1. Work on highly secret files
  2. Close the lid of your laptop and go have a break
  3. Anyone who opens the lid of the laptop can see the secret files for a half
second before the lock screen appears

  [Possible Regression]

  Content on screen isn't painted anymore and screen stays black.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1965449] [NEW] new Ubuntu logo looks bad

Not a big deal and for sure just my opinion.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1934697] Re: Default keyring password keeps resetting if set to empty

2021-12-09 Thread Francois Thirioux
I maybe experience the same issue: seahorse keeps (randomly after
session start) asking me a password to unlock keyring. The point is that
I set a void keyring pwd avery time and it's resetted every time.

I have full-disk-encryption too... but I kept a gdm login pwd after boot.
Ubuntu 22.04 dev, up to date.

Title:
  Default keyring password keeps resetting if set to empty

Status in seahorse package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  My system (on which I'm the only user) has full-disk encryption turned
  on, and I thus have the same password for both the encryption password
  and my user account. Likewise, I have automatic login turned on so I
  don't have to type my password twice, as it would be quite redundant.

  With automatic login turned on, I thus changed my password for my
  default keyring to be nothing, as one, the security of full-disk
  encryption solves all of the needs that a keyring password would for
  me, and two, I'd like to not have to enter my keyring password every
  time I boot.

  Issue is that for some strange reason the keyring password
  miraculously keeps resetting to the password of my user account. I
  don't know why, I don't know how, but it's been happening for at least
  the past couple of months, awaiting me to make an Ubuntu One account
  so I could report the issue.

  The machine that's affected has been wiped at least three times over
  the past few months (due to various reasons), and the issue has also
  happened on another machine I was temporarily using at one point.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2020-11-27 Thread Francois Thirioux
Another concern:
https://github.com/kewisch/gdata-provider/issues
this very common addon that manages Google Calendar does not always show Google
calendars at TB startup. It's not snap nor Ubuntu nor Linux related. There are
numerous similar bug reports.
Another one with task creation:
https://github.com/kewisch/gdata-provider/issues/110

I know Ubuntu is promoting GNOME Calendar but using former Lightning one
is very common.

Status in nautilus-sendto package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in nautilus-sendto source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed
Status in nautilus-sendto source package in Groovy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  * Impact
  Nautilus->sendto fails to use the thunderbird snap command

  * Test case
  On a Ubuntu default session
  $ snap install thunderbird
  $ nautilus
  $ right click on a file and select the sendto entry

  -> thunderbird should be started with a composer dialog and the
  selected attachment included

  * Regression potential
  The patch removes an old hack that parsed and changed the thunderbird
command, verify that thunderbird is still correctly start using it from
different source (snap, deb, flatpak?)

  -

  TB 78.5.0 snap
  Focal

  Nothing happens when I right-click on a file (using Nautilus) from my
  home and choose 'send to'. I did not have such a problem using TB deb.

No it's only another attachment handling bug, but you showed it is not related.
The original bug stands still.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1898206] Re: Thunderbird snap 78.3.1 experiences some oddities to open attachment

2020-11-24 Thread Francois Thirioux
Note that I cannot open attachments in a compose window. Nothing happens
(because confinement/apparmor, as far as I can see in Logs).
That's very annoying to check I send the good files.

The url of the attachment begins with file:///run/user/1000...
If I choose to send a file through Nautilus right-click/send-to, the url of
file attached is usual one (location in home folder).

Please note that right-click works with TB snap only through nautilus-sendto

Seems to be Wayland related, from other sources.
(I did not test it in X, though.)

  ```
  #!/bin/bash
  DISPLAY=:0
  for t in $(ls -1 /usr/share/themes/)
  do
for i in $(ls -1 /usr/share/icons/)
do
  echo -e "\nTheme: $t, Icons: $i\n"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme "$t"
