2016-09-03 Thread Ilan Tal
Hi Matt,
I just checked on my 16.04LTS and I have no problem. For me at least, it is
fixed.

I've been using both Ubuntu and dropbox for several years. With Ubuntu
15.04 there is a new problem that my desktop icons disappear when I
click on the dropbox icon in the status bar and choose Open Dropbox
Folder. Then the desktop icons will disappear - but will remain
  visible in Files -> Desktop.

The only way I know to get the desktop icons back is to log out and
then log back in again. The bug is 100% reproducible, and it never
appeared before 15.04. I also have Copy on my status bar. Clicking on
Copy -> Open Copy Folder has no problems. Likewise I can use File with

dropbox has a problem and only since 15.04

If I can help in any way, please contact me ilan.tal - at - gmail.com

  [Impact]
DE-agnostic programs that invoke nautilus using "nautilus --no-desktop" will
make the nautilus-rendered desktop vanish. Dropbox is one such case.

  [Test Case]
  1. Launch nautilus, and make sure it is currently rendering the desktop.
  2. Run "nautilus --no-desktop /"
  3. See if the desktop vanishes.

  [Regression Potential]
The patch is relatively trivial, only affecting the --no-desktop codepath. As
a worst case, --no-desktop would not function correctly in cases where nautilus
is not already running (--no-desktop when nautilus is not already running means
nautilus should not render the desktop at all). Just to make sure, this
additional test case should be used:

  1. Kill nautilus, and make sure it doesn't get relaunched.
  2. Check to see what the desktop looks like (shouldn't be rendered by
nautilus, at least)
  3. Launch "nautilus --no-desktop /"
  4. Make sure that nautilus really doesn't render a desktop.

Title:
copy paste of Hebrew consistently crashes Writer

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Yesterday I wanted to copy-paste an article from a newspaper into Libre
Office. My initial attempt crashed the system such that the only way to turn
off the system was hold the power button.
After that I decided to do it in parts. I took the first part which was
basically a single paragraph. The first paragraph went in, so I tried some more
text, after the first picture. That again crashed Ubuntu so the power button
again was needed. A third attempt likewise crashed the system, so that I
understood that there are apparently some characters which Libre Office has
real trouble with.
To solve the problem I did a copy paste into gedit which lost all the
formatting information - but at least it worked with no crashes. After I had
all the text in gedit, I could copy paste from gedit to LIbre Office. Then I
did a copy image on the pictures and added them. The copy image was clean - as
I have come to expect from Libre Office. In short, I got the job done.
Since I have a very high opinion of Libre Office, I would like someone to
look into the problem and filter out whatever nasty character is crashing the
system.
  The article is the following:
  http://www.israelhayom.co.il/article/281893
I'm sure a lot of other things would also show the problem, but this one
crashes it for sure.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1453655] Re: desktop icons disappear on Ubuntu 15.04 when clicking Open Dropbox folder

2015-06-06 Thread Ilan Tal
It is clearly not obvious that it should be connected to dropbox. In fact it
took me a while to find where the connection was. It is however connected to
dropbox. I have solved the problem personally in that I now never ask to open a
dropbox window. Instead I right click on File and choose Open a New Window.
That works properly. Right click on the dropbox icon - Open Dropbox folder
will kill my desktop icons.
This didn't used to happen before 15.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1453655] Re: desktop icons disappear on Ubuntu 15.04 when clicking Open Dropbox folder

2015-06-06 Thread Ilan Tal
The dropbox command is located somewhere else:

ilan@ilan-main:~$ $HOME/Dropbox
bash: /home/ilan/Dropbox: Is a directory
ilan@ilan-main:~$

I just tried again right click on the dropbox icon on the taskbar -
Open Dropbox Folder and again it erased my desktop icons. One of the
icons is to fire up Netbeans if that helps. Another one is to fire up
Virtual box to start up XP. My guess is that it isn't important what
exactly the icons are.

Now I will log out and back in to get my icons back. I can still clearly
see them in $Home/Desktop, so the bug is alive and well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 908465] Re: Hebrew Menus texts unreadable - characters show up as square blocks

2011-12-25 Thread Ilan Tal
Eli shalom,
On this system Use system font for user interface is checked and I can set
Hebrew as the locale and all works perfectly well. Thus it seems in most cases
the default Ubuntu font does indeed support Hebrew. On my friend's computer, on
the other hand, there IS a problem.
So maybe there are 2 different versions of the default Ubuntu font? On this
computer there is a good one and on your computer and my friend's computer, a
bad one? It sounds a bit far fetched, but how can one explain what we see?

In any case, I'll try the work around on my friend's computer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 891638] Re: missing Hebrew menus at login time

2011-12-07 Thread Ilan Tal
Hi Gunnar,
This morning I saw there were updates available and among them was the greeter.
I downloaded and it asked me if I wanted to update the config file or keep the
current version. I guessed that in the default version the show language combo
box wouldn't be true, so I opted to keep the current version.

I logged out and back in again with no change, so I did a reboot. Then
it worked and changed to Hebrew. You also improved the text in the combo
box. Instead of he-il, it is now Hebrew, which is nicer. Also it seems
that the list is shorter (this may be just my imagination). In any case
it was much easier to see the Hebrew entry.

In any case, it is up and flying! Thanks for your effort.

Hi Gunnar,
I just did an update to the software to check out your new fix. I didn't see
any apparent change. Maybe it hasn't yet made it to the usual repository? I
just used the gear control to get software updates. I have no problem waiting a
few more days if it needs to filter down.
Where should it be on the logon screen?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 891638] Re: missing Hebrew menus at login time

2011-12-05 Thread Ilan Tal
Hi Gunnar,
I went to synaptic and installed lightdm-gtk-greeter. I didn't have it
installed.
also the greeter session was unity-greeter.
Also added the true for the show language bar.

Did a reboot and now it appears. I must say that in my opinion the greeter is
nicer than unity.
Among all the variations of English, I finally saw Hebrew, so I chose it.
It nicely ignored me and continued in English. Next time I logged in, it was
back to English as the default language.
My guess is that I still don't have your corrected version, so I will wait
another few days.

Since you obviously understand the system, I would like your opinion on
another bug I reported:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/883533

The unity bar, without colors, isn't nearly as nice as the high contrast
bar, but the high contrast bar is missing the gear at the end to do a
shutdown, logoff etc. It might be as simple as a missing png file, but I
don't understand the structure of the object. I tried to dig in but I
couldn't find the missing piece. If you have a few minutes please look
over what was written and give me your opinion.

Thanks,
Ilan

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 891638] Re: missing Hebrew menus at login time

2011-11-17 Thread Ilan Tal
Hi Gunnar,
I finally see my error! In the Language Support Hebrew was always grayed out. I
assumed that the fact that it was grayed out meant that I couldn't use it. In
fact I couldn't choose it, but I COULD drag it up to the top, and THAT I didn't
know.

So that solves the main problem in that my friends can use Hebrew. There
is another system which I use for compilation of Netbeans and others use
for data entry. I prefer English but Hebrew is necessary for those doing
the data entry. Thus I await your update which will completely solve the
problem.

BTW, I REALLY appreciate your very prompt response. In the old days I
used to use Windows and in your fondest dream you could never get
someone to even look at the problem, let alone FIX it!

Thanks,
Ilan
