I still have the same problem since upgrading to 18.04, but only when
*not* connected to a wired network. When connected to a wired network, I
see the wireless menu and the wired menu correctly. However, when not
connected to a wired network, the user menu starts with VPN.

Recently, in the GNOME session, the WiFi icon vanished, and all that I
get is the icon for connected network, which is odd. My other machine
does not even seem to get that icon.
