[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2018010] [NEW] Cannot backup bookmarks

2023-04-28 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

I cannot backup my bookmarks (on two different computers). Going to menu
overflow -> bookmarks -> manage bookmarks
gets me to what I would expect but neither of the two backup options work (JSON
and HTML). In both cases, when I click save, the dialog disappears
immediately, but no file appears in the destination folder (Documents).

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1812754]

2019-09-22 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
I just saw this. Sorry for the delay.

I use the version distributed with my Linux, and follow the versions
there. I'm never going to be at the bleeding edge, and I don't want to
mess with the support I get.

May I suggest that it's easier for you to do a quick load of the two
samples I suggested than it is for me to do an unsupported upgrade and keep
following thereafter. This is especially true if you run it under Ubuntu
or anything where you can use a command line like I did. This is a VERY
quick way to reproduce the problem or confirm it has been fixed.

Libreoffice writer adds blank pages on multiple inputs

Status in LibreOffice:
  Incomplete
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I have multiple .txt files on the command line and start
libreoffice writer, it adds (many) blank pages to the documents.
These blanks contain nothing at all and I have not figured out how to
remove them. But they are included when I print them.

I'm attaching a file on which this happens. It contains an anonymized
fragment of the original, repeates a number of times. I suggest you
create two copies, called perhaps junk1.txt and junk2.txt.

I use the command "soffice junk*" to load them into the writer, and I
  get the extra blank pages.

If, however, I just do soffice junk1.txt, I get a document of the
  correct size.

I can do that of course, but it is still an annoying and inconvenient
  error for my workflow.

  ---

One hint to debugging: if I do this:

  for i in junk1.txt junk2.txt
  do
soffice $i &
  done

I see the problem. If, however, I introduce a delay the problem does
  not appear. Like so:

  for i in junk1.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1812754]

2019-03-20 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
I have a better idea. Instead of inventing reasons for me to mess up my
settings why don't YOU try to confirm it. I sent all the stuff you'd
need to try this. If it does not add blank pages for you with whatever
settings you have, go ahead and mark it invalid. If it _does_ add blank
pages, mark it confirmed and go from there.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1812754]

2019-03-15 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Sorry, I do not have a spare machine to download the software.

When I first reported this to Ubuntu I got immediate confirmation, and
they suggested I re-submit to you. If you have the latest software,
please give it a try. It will either fail or not in a hurry. Maybe 5
minutes max will any downloading and directory prep you decide to do.

I set it back to unconfirmed.

can remove the package that's generating these messages:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1267452] [NEW] Panel sound control is inactive

2014-01-09 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

This is a pretty fresh install of Xubuntu 13.10. The place where sound
control used to be in the panel in previous versions now shows a greyed-
out speaker and row of dots. It is completely inactive, unresponive,
useless.

AFAIK, there is no way for me now to control sound volume internally --
fortunately, my speaker system has its own knob. But it's incoveninent,
and an embarrassment to Ubuntu, that I have to use it.

ProblemType: Bug

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1267457] [NEW] ubuntu-bug needs an unknown category at the end of every search

2014-01-09 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

I just reported a bug relating to sound, against apport out of
frustration.

The problem related to something that's placed in the panel
automatically. I have no idea what the panel software is called, or
what package its in. Same for sound, actually.

Ubuntu-bug presented me with choices, none of them good, so I chose
sound. I wound up at the end of its search for a package in a bunch of
sound things that were clearly wrong.

So I'm reported that this part of Ubuntu-bug needs tweaking. Perhaps a
prominent first-tier category for the stuff that gets added
automatically, like panel and so on.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1264159] [NEW] wishlist: a version of ubuntu-bug for console mode when the GUI fails

2013-12-25 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

I've got a GUI failure in my Raring system. I can log into a console
session, but not a graphical one. But I cannot report the bug on that
system because ubuntu-bug requires Firefox to be runnable.

So I'm going to have to report the problem on a different system, and
hope the readers understand that the logs that are automatically
attached do not apply to the bug.

A console version would make sense for this. It's not clear to me that
I can file a bug directly in launchpad without going through ubuntu-bug,
but I'll try that first.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1239807] Re: hp-setup components need Qt4, but don't pull it in

2013-10-17 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Text mode did not allow me to set up the printer, so I installed hplip-
gui. The printer is now installed, so I'm not sure how I could give you
any details about what went wrong with text mode.

  Details:
Starting a fresh install of Xubuntu 13.04 64-bit, and configuring my printer.

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HPPrinterInstallation advises gksudo
hp-setup which fails with complicated error messages, including the variations

533 gksudo -i hp-setup
534 gksudo hp-setup --qt3

But the error message from the last of these suggested a way to do the setup

This worked sort of -- at least my printer seems to work now. The above are
annoyances, but I'm not sure how to file bugs against them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1239807] Re: hp-setup components need Qt4, but don't pull it in

2013-10-17 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
I did a fresh install and was able to recreate the problem. I was also
able to see why it didn't work, and what to do. I'll attach the
typescript, but I can summarize pretty well

I started with gksudo hp-setup as advised, and got error messages
suggesting trying --qt3 and -i

I tried -i thusly: gksudo hp-setup -i and got a long error response.
This is what caused me to file a bug.

What I should have tried was hp-setup -i That is, without the
gksudo; it asks for a password in a GUI dialog(!) but otherwise
proceeds sanely. Because of the GUI dialog, it might have failed in a
console login, but I didn't try that.

How I should have know that, and why it makes a difference are opaque to
me. They may be opaque to other users. Please give them some help with
more sane advice in the error messages.

The typescript contains the results of three commands (all three fail)
gksudo hp-setup
gksudo hp-setup --qt3
gksudo hp-setup -i

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1194312] [NEW] users-admin retains info about deleted user

2013-06-24 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

I'm creating temprary users to diagnose a different problems I'm having.
users-admin is making this harder. When I delete a user, not all info
disappears and when I restart user-admin the frakenuser is back in the
list of existing accounts, and survives multiple attempts to delete it.

In this case, I found entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. When I
manually deleted them, the problem was solved.

Could it be that users-admin is confused by the situation where there
are entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, but no home directory
exists?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078070] Re: Creating a table, cannot change the number of rows in the header

2012-12-23 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
A screencast seems like overkill. Do this:
Prepare: try to imagine you're a beginner, or at least that you're new to using
multi-line headers.
start LO Writer
table - insert table
in the popup dialog, try to change the X in
The first X rows
without changing anything else. It won't change.

I submit that this looks like an unresponsive dialog. Even if the
behavior is correct in a way, it would be nice if there were more
feedback.

So: change this from a bug to a feature request. Either:
1. Automatically also increase the number of rows.
2. Pop up a dialog explainging the problem.

the same issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1082110] [NEW] Endnote formatting is inconsistent and inflexible

2012-11-22 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

A document with endnotes, attached, exhibits two problems:
1. The note number of the first endnote is formatted differently from the
others, and if there's a way to change it, it sure is not obvious -- I can't
even select that number.
2. The endnotes are forced onto a separate page. Again, if there's a way to
change this, I haven't found it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078070] [NEW] Creating a table, cannot change the number of rows in the header

2012-11-12 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

When I create a new table, the dialog has a box to enter the number of
lines of header, and an up/down widget to nudge it. By either method, I

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078070] Re: Creating a table, cannot change the number of rows in the header

2012-11-12 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
It turns out this happened because there were only 2 rows specified. With more
rows, the heading can be more of them.
There ought to be better feedback. Like maybe changing the number of rows.
But something.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1077358] [NEW] Table width is not honored from RTF

2012-11-10 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

Saving as RTF loses table width information.

I'm attaching a snippet containing just a table, called bug.doc
To replicate the problem
*** begin steps
lowriter bug.doc (observe table width is 3 inches)
file - save as
   something.rtf
   confirm Use Rich Text Format
file - exit
lowriter something.rtf
*** end steps
At this point you should be looking at a table the full width of the document

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1073745] [NEW] New separator button causes crash

2012-10-31 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

As near as I can tell, the new separator button never does anything.

In addition, in a menu I created, Settings-Games-AisleRiot (not to be
