That issue finally pushed me to Arch Linux / EndeavourOS after years of
delayed package updates in Ubuntu LTS I created issue tickets for ^^

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1905025] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 package out of date

2020-11-22 Thread Martin Dünkelmann
How the ubuntu LTS releases, which are focused on stability and security fixes,
are handled by the company canoncial is devastating.
It's okay that a open source community doesn't have the ressources, but ubuntu
is made by a company. And this company makes me angry.

After 15 years with ubuntu with the same trouble I should search for
another linux distribution.

2019-11-04 Thread Martin Dünkelmann
Okay, I will stop and just answer your message.
And it is just my opinion about the disadvantages of snaps.

And I don't address developers who maintain everything.
But I address the developers who think they can throw a snap into the snap
store and doesn't put in updated dependencies. These developers exist.

And deprecated? Since a LTS distribution must ship updated versions with bug
and security fixes?
I don't speak about the shiny new and maybe buggy major version updates, I
speak about the bug and security fixing patches.
You install a deb and used third party libraries standard shipped in the
distribution get maintained by the distribution maintainer. And the developer
is forced to update his application to remain compatibility.
You install a snap and you can hope that the snap guy puts effort in updating
third party in his snap.

And again, I don't address every developer.

We always prefer a repository package over Snap.
Snap takes more storage space and forces us to run an application with
deprecated and security breaking libraries just because a developer doesn't
want to test his application with the newest dependencies.

Upgrade the Mono version to 5.x

Status in mono package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
It appears that the Mono version included in Bionic Beaver is `4.6.2.7
+dfsg-1ubuntu1`. This is a fairly outdated version considering that
Mono 5.0 stable was released about a year ago. Many new Mono programs
require a Mono version that is 5.x. For example, Godot states that
  they require Mono 5.4.

Without upgrading the Mono version, users of new Mono applications will have
to manually add a repository to get the latest Mono.
http://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/#download-lin-ubuntu
This is not ideal, we should upgrade the Mono version in the Ubuntu repos.

2018-12-19 Thread Martin Dünkelmann
Sorry

But I don't understand why you provide a popular email client in the standard
repo, if you don't maintain the version correctly.
Instead redirecting to their PPA
https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa would be better.
Most of the people doesn't know that there is a new version, because the update
manager provides no update.
So they think the software is crap, because bugs like "Thunderbird hung if HTML
signature references non-existent image" getting not fixed.

By the way, this is a popular internet application
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2018-28/

Not maintaining it correctly means many open security vulnerabilities
left on thousands of computers.

Are you kidding me?
Every new version receives bugfixes and securityfixes.
Do you want, that the user of an Ubuntu LTS suffer from security fixes and
annoying bugs?
I thought LTS means (security fixes and bugfixes).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1552040] Re: Laptop sometimes doesn't detect external monitor

2018-07-01 Thread Martin Dünkelmann
ThinkPad T460p
Ubuntu 18.04 / Linux Mint 19
uname -a Linux deus-ex-machina 4.15.0-23-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23
18:02:16 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Mate Desktop

Same problem.
If I boot with the dock, everything is fine.
If I unplug and plug it again, my external monitors are still black and my
internal keyboad and the USB are not working.
But I get the message, that the ethernet cable is connected and that the laptop
gets power.

I also tested
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1552040/comments/14
 from Sergey Menshikov (sergem)
After adding /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf my computer was unusable,
stopping at the bootscreen, with the message
PKCS#7 signature not signed with a trusted key
Secure Boot is deactivated.

  3) As far as the info I could find, the package "pm-utils" is supposed
to write log files in /var/log, such as "pm-suspend.log". These log
files, as you know, help troubleshoot hibernate/resume issues.

I happen to have one issue with hooks that don't run on resume, that
do run prior to hibernate when I run them manually and don't after
resume when I run them the same manual way. (different issue than this
  bug report)

  4) Therefore I need to scan through pm-suspeng.log file, but the file
is not created on my machine, anywhere on the HDD.

I have added my user to the "systemd-journal", "root" and "sudo"
groups, in case that could help, I still don't see the log file.

With previous Kubuntu versions (13.10 and others before, didn't try
between 13.10 and 16.04), this log file was created right away.

After searching and trying things out, I'm leaning towards the
possibility of a bug, which is the reason why I am posting here.
