Confirming that 'restart unity-panel-service' fixes it for me as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1565522] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps

2016-04-06 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
To further clarify: I can still find menu entries by searching for them
in the HUD (fx. in Nautilus press Alt and type "folder" and select the
"Create folder" menu item there). So I guess the menus are still
exported somehow, just not being rendered.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites

2013-11-19 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
I can second what I mentioned elsewhere: This is *not* related to
nouveau. Nor is it related to Compiz effects.

I get these symptoms maybe 10-20 per day: Screen freezes. Music/sound
continues to work. Can move mouse but not click. Keyboard unresponsive.
After maybe 10s the system comes back up.

The hangs are seemingly random. Maybe slightly more likely to happen
when system is under load. But can happen at any given time.

I tried under Xfce, Gnome, and Unity. All environments display the
symptom. And frankly, it's driving me nuts.

(My system is all Intel, with latest Ubuntu 13.10 packages)

I have recently, re-installed fresh ubuntu 13.10 distribution release.
But everything worked fine. until recently i had strange problem of my
display screen getting freezed randomly; but no response to either
mouse/keyboard.
But i want to point it out; it happens randomly and is not specific ?
Other day, i had music player playing in background, but screen freezed. but
my music was still running.
Kindly note, i used multiple monitor setup and same issue of screen freeze
also cropped up.

I,am not sure, whether it is bug ?

  thanks for the expertise support.

Touchpad in laptops gets clicked all the time randomly when typing

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The touchpad is supposed to be disabled when typing text, but isn't
and texts get randomly selected, deleted, cursor moved, inserted
elsewhere etc. due to spurious clicks the proximity of the hand
  causes on touchpad.

I do have disable touchpad while typing set to true in mouse
settings -touchpad. (btw, I am curious why this setting even present
given I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to switch it off, even when
gaming - I think I will file a separate bug).

This happens so often, like every few secs when typing, that it's
super annoying to the point of not being able to use the laptop.

The only way out is to disable Enable mouse click with touchpad
setting. Then, it's very hard to use touchpad on macbookpro because of
the amount of physical clicks involved in middle of the touchpad
making select-and-drag kind of operations almost impossible. Either
way, it's unusable, so I recomment higher severity for this bug.

I am running 12.04, updated like yesterday, but I have seen this
happen before in 12.04. So, I don't think this is due to last release.
The macbook pro I have is, I think version 8,2. Please let me know if
more info is needed from me. Thanks.

Software Centre - automatically add app icon to launcher

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

It seems quite a common case where after clicking install the user
is prompted first with the user password and then with the add to
laucher option dialog. I was wondering if the second dialog could be
avoided providing a way to add it to launcher while it's
downloading/installing (ie. check box which the user can modify but
  might not).

  -
  Desired solution:

When a application is installed from the Software Centre it's icon
should be automatically pinned to the Launcher. The option in the
software centre to Add [app name] to the launcher? after installing
  a application should be removed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 833610] Re: Impossible to find Banshee in Unity on 11.10 by typing Music

2011-12-06 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
unity-lens-applications indexes the X-GNOME-Keywords field, so that
seems like a possibility.

Relatedly; I don't think it is a good idea to match in the Categories
field via text searches (even though it's a trivial tweak in u-l-a). The
Categories contains semantic data and not user content (and is not
translated).

We could potentially index the Name of the Menu tags in which we
find the apps and attach that to the application. This will just be
pushing the problem around though (Banshee is listed in the Multimedia
Menu element).

already listed there.

I captured a stack trace of the SIGABRT. You'll also find the trace from
a SIGUSR in there, but that looked like normal behavior.

fwiw - i bet this behavioral change is related to gedit recently
switching from a dbus-glib based single-instancing to a GApplication

If I start gedit using --standalone it does work the first time. This
implies that default behaviour is to start gedit in the background.
The file is ignored when gedit starts in the background, so a second

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 827414] Re: gedit fails to start on first try, but does on the second

2011-09-23 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Sorry Michael, Seb just taught me on IRC to use 'strings /proc/$(pidof
gedit)/environ | grep DBUS', and lo and behold, my gedit *does* have the
starter address set.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 855414] Re: Unity dash becomes very slow/laggy when opening certain webpages (Launchpad) in Firefox

2011-09-21 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Seeing this as well. But the slowness of the dash reveal is disregarding
whether I use mouse or keyboard to reveal the dash.

** Also affects: unity

Bug description:
  Hello,

the problem I'm reporting here is actually a weird interaction between
the Nvidia propritary driver, Firefox and Unity, so I'm not sure if I
should have reported it against Firefox or Nvidia driver instead.

With the propritary Nvidia driver installed, the following happens:
  - When I visit certain webpages in Firefox, scrolling through
them/interacting with them becomes very slow and laggy. The most prominent
example are all kinds of paged from launchpad.net, e.g.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs, or a random bug report page. This problem
exists as long as I can remember (5 years?!), regardless of the version of
Firefox or Nvidia driver.
  - In Oneiric, there is an additional interaction of this slowness/laginess
with Unity: If one of those slow pages is opened in Firefox as currently
selected tab (e.g. a bugreport) and I press 'Super' to reveal the dash and
launcher, they take a rather long time to appear in contrast to the normal
behaviour and the animation is also slow and laggy (if the dash has come up, it
works fine and sleek as usual, so it's the process of the dash/launcher coming
up that is slow).
  - Interestingly I don't experience this slowness of dash/launcher if I reveal
them via mouse (hovering to the left screen side and clicking the dash button).

The slowness of certain webpages only happens in Firefox (not in
Chromium for example), and only if propritary Nvidia drivers are
installed, with Nouveau drivers this slow pages phenomenon
  disappears in Firefox too.

The additonal problem with the Dash in Oneric may seem small, but it can be
rather annoying when trying to write bug reports for example.
In Natty there is no such slowness when opening the dash via 'Super' and a
slow web page is opened, so I reported it to Unity in hope that there may be
an easy workaround.
But the best thing of course would be if this slow pages issue would be
fixed in Firefox and/or the Nvidia driver (the latter is of course beyond
control of anyone not working for Nvidia :-( ).

  Kind regards,
  Jan

Can everyone confirm that this only happens when using alt-f2, and *not*
when using the normal dash (ie. hit super and type 'gedit'). That's
the behavior I am seeing here at least.
