Since Pop!_OS will skip upgrading to 22.10 Kinetic, there will be some
more users happily awaiting this roll out on 22.04 LTS Jammy. Thanks for

espeak-ng cannot load mbrola language files

Status in espeak-ng package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

7 de --/F german-mbrola-5mb/mb-de5
7 de --/F german-mbrola-7mb/mb-de7

espeak-ng -vmb-de1 "Test"

gives me:

mbrola: FATAL ERROR : cannot find file /usr/share/mbrola/de1/de1 !
mbrowrap error: mbrola closed stderr and did not exit
Error: Could not load the specified mbrola voice file.

It does speak, though, seemingly using a default voice.

/usr/share/mbrola does not exist.

The files actually seem to reside in

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/espeak-ng-data/voices/mb

I doubt that I can solve this via a simple symbolic link because
seemingly the expected directory structure is different: all mbrola
files are in the mb directory; there are no subdirectories like
/de/de1 or similar.

Bug description:
[Impact]

Installing the Galician language via Language Support fails. The
reason is that there is currently two hunspell spellchecking packages
in the archive:

* hunspell-gl-es, provided by the hunspell-gl-es source package
* hunspell-gl, provided by the libreoffice-dictionaries source package

Even if hunspell-gl-es conflicts to hunspell-gl, having both of them
available in the archive is not compatible with the way the writing
aids is pulled via Language Selector. The proposed upload in this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/lo-dicts-symlinks

drops the hunspell-gl binary from libreoffice-dictionaries.

[Test Case]

* Open Language Support
* Try to install Galician

[Regression Potential]

Low.

I'm on 16.04 with Gnome-Flashback Compiz, XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-
Flashback:Unity

When I resume from sleep, the contents of my desktop (including any
open windows, emails, etc) are displayed onscreen briefly before the
unlock screen is shown. This potentially allows an attacker to view
the contents of a locked screen.

To reproduce:
1) Suspend a machine, e.g. by closing the lid
2) Resume the machine

Expected results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the screensaver unlock screen.

Actual results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the set of open windows that
were displayed before the machine was put to sleep. After a second or two, the
unlock screen is drawn and you have to enter a password to unlock the machine.

This is reproducible on my system.

unlock screen is shown. This potentially allows an attacker to view
the contents of a locked screen.

To reproduce:
1) Suspend a machine, e.g. by closing the lid
2) Resume the machine

Expected results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the screensaver unlock screen.

Actual results:
Upon resume, the first thing shown onscreen is the set of open windows that
were displayed before the machine was put to sleep. After a second or two, the
unlock screen is drawn and you have to enter a password to unlock the machine.

This is reproducible on my system.

3. Hit F11 to enter full screen
4. Lock screen (ctrl + alt + L) or wait for it to lock
5. Move mouse

Title:
When switching users, desktop is visible before password is entered

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
Triaged

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity desktop.
gnome-screensaver 3.6.0-0ubuntu2.

Problem:
Sometimes, when switching users, it is possible to see the contents of
another user's desktop, as well as any windows they may have open, WITHOUT
entering their password first.

Steps to reproduce:
This requires a computer which has at least two users – let's call them A and
B.
1. Log in as user A.
2. Start a few applications, just to have some windows open on the desktop.
3. From the session menu, switch to user B and log in.
4. Start at least one application that will put the computer under high load
for a while.
5. From the session menu, switch to user A again.

What is expected to happen:
A password prompt window is shown, on a clean background.

What actually happens:
A's desktop, and the windows that are open there, is visible for a brief
moment before the password prompt appears. The higher the load on the computer,
the longer the desktop is visible.

This means that if several users are logged into a computer, one of
them can see what the others are doing without entering their
password. This is a breach of security.

Even if hunspell-gl-es conflicts to hunspell-gl, having both of them

2017-10-30 Thread Pander
When starting for example gedit, gnome-character-map or any other GNOME
applications in lxterminal on a fresh system with Lubuntu 17.10, the
same warnings are printed:

WARNING **: Error retrieving accessibility bus address:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not
provided by any .service files

If this should be a separate bug, please let me know.

Inkscape raising a hand. Although this may sound like a
bug it may be a cool feature if one builds an

the changes are being viewed on screen with Inkscape.
So we have two scenarios:

Feature:
The Revert command in the File menu is changed into a
dialogue box where the user can specify how often
Inkscape should reload the file, thus refreshing the
screen with the new updates. Something like:
"[checkbox] Revert every [data field] seconds"

Bug:
Tune Inkscape so that it complaints if it realises that

Wacom Intuos3 pad buttons breaks mouseclicking

Status in libwacom package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Ubuntu 16.10.
Pressing any of the pad buttons on my Intuos3 makes clicking stop working,
both in the wacom pen as well as in an ordinary usb-mouse. (All left-, middle-,
right-click stops working).

First click of a pad button gives a left down-click which I can only
get out of by pressing Esc. following presses does nothing. Only
solution is to reboot.

libwacom should be latest versions.

Rebooting into my old 14.04 installation the tablet works perfectly
fine there so no hardware failure.

I remember having this kind of issue in older distros (like <12.04 or
so) so this feels like a nasty regression.

I have to disable pad buttons with "xinput disable 'Wacom Intuos3 6x11
Pad pad' to be able to use Ubuntu 16.10 at all without risking to
break the whole system when working, but I really need to use the pad
buttons so I need a solution.

This is not a bug. Set it please to wishlist.

I've made some changes in gnome-media package for ease of switching
the sound output in cases where you have more than one sound output.
Now there is sub-menu in the gnome-volume-control-applet menu where
you can choose the current sound output. This is very useful if you
have a bluetooth headset. Menu will show up only when there is more
than one audio output devices.

I've contacted gnome-media maintainer Marc-André Lureau. He recommended me to
register it as a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org, which i did.
Bug:#593752
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593752

Also he said that this will not be in the 2.28 because it is in UI/string
freeze.
Maybe it is possible to get it into Ubuntu karmic?

Attached patch file with changes made. Just get gnome-media source
package, drop patch into package's debian/pathces directory and build
it.

Here you can see how it looks in action:

Title:
Bluetooth headset can do input but not output

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed

Bug description:
In gnome-control-center -> Sound, my bluetooth headset can be
identified under the Hardware tab. When the headset is selected for
Test Speakers (profile Telephony Duplex HSP/HFP), no sound is
detected. When headset is selected under Output tab, no application
can play any sound on it. By using paplay, error msg returned as
"Failed to drain stream".

When the headset is selected under tab Input, it can record sound just
fine (with Input Level responding). It can also record clear sound
with the Sound Recorder application.

The headset can function on my Android phone so the headset hardware
is intact, although it's an aged one, which is Nokia HS-11W on
bluetooth 1.1 supporting HSP 1.1 & HFP 1.0. The bluetooth adaptor is
slightly better, which is Belkin F8T012 on bluetooth 2.0.

Bug description:
An SVG file that is being viewed by Inkscape may be
changed externally by another application without
Inkscape raising a hand. Although this may sound like a
bug it may be a cool feature if one builds an
application that frequently updates the SVG file and
the changes are being viewed on screen with Inkscape.
So we have two scenarios:

Feature:
The Revert command in the File menu is changed into a
dialogue box where the user can specify how often
Inkscape should reload the file, thus refreshing the
screen with the new updates. Something like:
"[checkbox] Revert every [data field] seconds"

Bug:
Tune Inkscape so that it complaints if it realises that
the SVG file has been changed externally. Provide an
option to deactivate this behavior by activating the
feature presented above.

Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 797686] Re: Hunspell is not used via libhunspell

still needs software upgrade.

Title:
Hunspell is not used via libhunspell

Status in enchant package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed

Bug description:
Hunspell is not used when myspell is not install, enchant falls back
to inferior aspell.

I have installed on Ubuntu (Natty) the following packages:
libenchant1c2a1.6.0-1
aspell0.60.6-4ubuntu1
hunspell 1.2.11-1ubuntu1
and a series of dictionaries but no package with the myspell executable.

When using e.g. gedit that uses enchant, enchant will use aspell instead of
hunspell. I have verified this by running both hunspell and aspell manually on
the same document. The false positives that I see in gedit are indeed from
aspell.

I did not use a custom .enchant file, just the normal installation that would
use:
*:myspell,aspell,ispell
So I would expect hunspell and not aspell.

How can this be solved without having to install myspell executable?

I consider this a major bug because many many users might expect that they are
using a very recent and acurate spell check from hunspell but are actually
thrown back to inferior checking with aspell.

Can enchant bugs be linked to upstream bugzilla bugs in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/bugtrackers/abi-bugs ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1669997] Re: Remove libunity9 package dependency for thunderbird-gnome-support

2017-03-08 Thread Pander
Thanks for your elaboration. My reasons for requesting this are:
- GNOME != Unity, with all respect for Unity, but there are GNOME users that do
not use any of it
- at the moment it pulls in only 2 kB, but when Unity extends dependencies
(without being aware of this little package), it could pull in a whole lot more
are did happen in the past
- hence, suggestion to split the package in thunderbird-gnome-support and
thunderbird-unity-support
- for recommended packages I can still decide myself to install or deinstall
it, with hard dependencies that is more difficult, luckily there is no hard
dependency on thunderbird-gnome-support

Perhaps it is all a bit too much on the details in order to optimise
this for GNOME non-Unity users, but I hope you also see my point. So
sudo dpkg -P thunderbird-gnome-support works for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977993] Re: Can't lock screen

Title:
Can't lock screen

Status in xscreensaver package in Ubuntu:
New

Bug description:
Similar to bug #10228, I'm currently unable to lock the screen with
xscreensaver. Ctrl-Alt-L does nothing, and `xscreensaver-command
-lock` reports "xscreensaver-command: already locked."
.

I've tried the following to get it back up:
$ killall xscreensaver # Returned with exit code 0
$ xscreensaver-command -lock
xscreensaver-command: no screensaver is running on display :0
$ xscreensaver-command -restart
xscreensaver-command: no screensaver is running on display :0
$ xscreensaver
xscreensaver: 14:22:19: "gnome-screensaver" is already running on display :0
(window 0x3a1)
$ xscreensaver-command -lock
xscreensaver-command: no screensaver is running on display :0

Looks like there might be some conflict between gnome-screensaver and
xscreensaver. I've no idea why gnome-screensaver is running - I'm
running LXDE and xscreensaver by default.

Workaround: gnome-screensaver-command --exit && xscreensaver &

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 726480] Re: gnome-screensaver forces itself upon xscreensaver users

2017-02-23 Thread Pander
Can this bug still be reproduced with 16.04 and/or 16.10? If so, what
can be done upstream by GNOME and/or Ubuntu? What are urls to upstream
bugs in GNOME?

Title:
gnome-screensaver forces itself upon xscreensaver users

Status in gnome-screensaver package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

gnome-screensaver installs the DBus file

/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.ScreenSaver.service

which unconditionally starts gnome-screensaver whenever some other
process (e.g. nm-applet, update-notifier) "pull the trigger". This is
troubling for users of non-gnome desktop environments, e.g. LXDE.

A workaround for me was to install the following
/usr/local/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.ScreenSaver.service:

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.gnome.ScreenSaver
Exec=/bin/sh -c 'if xscreensaver-command -version >/dev/null 2>&1; then
renice +10 $$ >/dev/null 2>&1; while sleep 60; do :; done else exec
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver; fi' gnome-screensaver-placeholder

The dummy process remains active because if it exited immediately,
dbus might try to restart gnome-screensaver. I don't know if this is
really necessary.

First of all, this needs to be fixed -- screensavers should not step
on each others' toes. Secondly, is there a more elegant workaround?
Note that because of bug #726471, a user can't override a misguided
/usr/share/ service file in his home (~/.local/share) configuration:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1369216] Re: gpu-manager: /etc/modprobe.d is not a file

I have Radeon HD 5970. As root I can do startx and use everything. All

gpu-manager treats all files in /etc/modprobe.d as config files

Status in ubuntu-drivers-common package in Ubuntu:

Fix Released

Bug description:
My media center computer have a single nvidia GPU connected to a TV,
and have for many years been happily using the nvidia driver.
Unfortunately the recent upgrade to version 1:0.2.91.7 broke X.
Starting lightdm would fail, delete my xorg.conf and redirect libgl
symlinks to mesa.

After some debugging I fond that this was done by gpu-manager, because
it incorrectly believes that my nvidia module is blacklisted. gpu-
manager.log contained "Is nvidia blacklisted? yes".

More debugging determined that this was happening because I have a several
years old file named:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.dpkg-old
which among other things contain the line "blacklist nvidia".

However that is _not_ a modprobe config file. modprobe only uses files
with a .conf extension. (See the man page modprobe.d(5)).
Unfortunately gpu-manager does not have this restriction and looks in
all files in /etc/modprobe.d by running:

grep -G "blacklist.*nvidia[[:space:]]*$" /etc/modprobe.d/*

I could work-around the bug by removing the .dpkg-old file. However this will
likely break other machines as well. I found two bugs 1373968 and 1374871 about
X not working after installing the latest update. However they does not contain
enough information to determine if they are duplicates of this bug or not.

Update to upstream V1.4.2

Status in ptouch-driver package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released

Bug description:
I've just released upstream version 1.4.2 of the P-touch printer
driver to resolve two issues raised by Ladislav Laska and @Pander.

https://bitbucket.org/philpem/printer-driver-ptouch

Issues resolved:

* NegativePrint=True causes "Unknown RLE flag" errors from CUPS
(This is considered a critical bug and prevents the driver from
functioning)

* CutMedia=JobEnd doesn't cut. The label is printed, but not cut.
=LabelEnd works as expected.

I would appreciate it if the Ubuntu (and upstream Debian) maintainers could
release these bugfixes in their packages.

issue on such a printer they own. Hopefully, that can be tackled soon

Hello,

I'm discovering a bug when printing complex PDFs or other complex
documents from GTK applications. Printing complex PDFs from evince, or
sometimes even printing comples webpages from firefox result in one
error page being printed instead of the document content:

+-+
ERROR NAME;
undefined
COMMAND;
Q
OPERAND STACK;
+-+

My printer is a Brother HL 5270DN. It doesn't matter whether the
printer is connected via USB or as network printer. In both cases the
described bug does happen. The PPD I use is "Brother HL-5270DN BR-
Script3", similar to the one at
http://www.openprinting.org/download/PPD/Brother/BR5270_2_GPL.ppd

I discovered this bug in up-to-date Debian unstable for several years
already. Now I switched one of my laptops to Ubuntu Natty (fresh
installation), and unfortunately discovered the same bug there as
well.

I'm pretty sure that this bug is related to bug #419143, and not
really in CUPS, but rather in some library (poppler or cairo) used by
GTK applications. The same PDFs that produce the described error in
evince, print fine in okular.

I attach an example PDF that doesn't print in evince, but prints fine
in okular. It's sufficient to (try to) print page 1 of the document.
