Should that be fixed in the Linux kernel, or at least reported to the
developers?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1956147] Re: bluetooth: Google Nest not working

2022-01-17 Thread Paul Menzel
The system was updated from Ubuntu 20.04 to 21.10, but it’s still not
working out of the box without the script `a2dp.py`.

I am not able to work more on the issue, as I do not have the
environment, but maybe Canonical and Google should work more closely
together on the QA side.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1956147] Re: bluetooth: Google Nest not working

2022-01-05 Thread Paul Menzel
Yes, thank you for assigning the right component.

Personally, for desktops, I would always recommend the latest release. I
think a lot of users do not know the difference, and just click the
green button.

> We also have the latest BlueZ in Ubuntu already.

Do you mean 21.10, which has 5.60-0ubuntu2.1? Ubuntu 20.04 has
5.53-0ubuntu3.4.

Also, as written, `bluetoothd` seemed to have crashed several times, and
the user allowed the crash reporter to upload the traces. Where can
those be found?

This is not my system, so I cannot debug a lot.

Linux kernel 5.4.x is used, and Linux logs hci related messages, and
bluetoothd also segfaults. (Ubuntu noticed the crash, and should have
uploaded the resulting dumps.)

What fixed it was using `a2dp.py`:

```
The article *Firefox 90 on POWER (and a JIT progress report)* [1]
there are two simple patches to be applied to NSS 3.66.
Rico is right. I only had the entry below. No idea, if I only added the
line below several versions ago or some upgrade changed it. (Probably
the former.)
deb http://de.ports.ubuntu.com groovy-proposed main restricted
Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed I added
`multiverse universe`, and now the upgrade went through.
Sorry for the noise. Please close the issue.
2020-09-26 Thread Paul Menzel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1872564 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872564
The original report contains two issues, where only the second one is
fixed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/1872564.
For the first audit messages for `cups-browsed`
[ 1769.505132] audit: type=1400 audit(1587372138.575:3011):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="capable" profile="/usr/sbin/cups-browsed"
I created https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1897369.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1897369] Re: apparmor: Allow cups-browsed to change nice value (CAP_SYS_NICE)
2020-09-26 Thread Paul Menzel
>From the manual page capabilities(7):
   CAP_SYS_NICE
  * Lower the process nice  value  (nice(2),  setpriority(2))  and
change the nice value for arbitrary processes;
  * set real-time scheduling policies for calling process, and set
scheduling policies and  priorities  for  arbitrary  processes
(sched_setscheduler(2), sched_setparam(2), sched_setattr(2));
  * set  CPU  affinity  for  arbitrary  processes (sched_setaffin‐
ity(2));
  * set I/O scheduling class and priority for arbitrary  processes
(ioprio_set(2));
  * apply  migrate_pages(2)  to arbitrary processes and allow pro‐
cesses to be migrated to arbitrary nodes;
  * apply move_pages(2) to arbitrary processes;
  * use the MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL flag with mbind(2) and move_pages(2)
No idea, if cups-browsed should be allowed to change the nice value of
*arbitrary* processes.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 313514] Re: MASTER: evdev driver ignores keycodes > 255
2020-07-02 Thread Paul Menzel
Is this still a problem with *xserver-xorg-input-libinput*, which
replaces *xserver-xorg-input-evdev*?
  Invalid
Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev
  package Version: 1:2.0.99+git20080912-0ubuntu5
  Ubuntu 8.10
  Keyboards can use keycodes that go above 255. See
http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.28/include/linux/input.h
  These are often multimedia keys for keyboards and remotes.
  These are ignored by the evdev driver:
  gimble:~/xserver-xorg-input-evdev-2.0.99+git20080912$ grep 255 src/evdev.c
  if (code > 255 && ev->code < KEY_MAX) {
  /* The X server can't handle keycodes > 255 anyway, just drop them.  */
  Which means they never reach X and therefore cannot be used in anyway.
  The only workaround at the minute would be to use input-kdb to remap
  all keys for an input device to values lower than 255.
[Sorry, I wasn’t subscribed to the notifications.]
@hui.wang, your attached firmware, what version is that?
$ md5sum sof-icl.ri
2ca373e6254b0e9b37439f7a31984973  /dev/shm/sof-icl.ri
@adamfubuntu, do you still have the problem *without* `dsp_driver=0` on
an up-to-date Ubuntu 19.10 with Linux 5.5-rc6?
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738774] Re: Pixeled icons with LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 on HiDPI/4K display
2020-01-18 Thread Paul Menzel
This is still an issue, and due to HiDPI getting more and more common,
Ubuntu should really look into this to give users a good experience with
the setups.
Off-topic: Adam, you should also install the other firmware files like
for graphics.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1856366] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected
2019-12-14 Thread Paul Menzel
It should work out of the box without the user having to specify any
options.
1.  There does not seem to be an Ubuntu package for Sound Open Firmware
yet. Adam, does the pre-built firmware file from
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/releases work? Linux 5.3, 5.4,
5.5-rc1?
2.  With the firmware file installed, does Linux 5.3 work with
`dsp_driver=0`? Please attach the Linux messages from the non-working
and working boot.
I tested this yesterday with Ubuntu 18.10, and Firefox did crash
anymore. So this can be tagged as solved. I do not know the first fixed
version though.
files](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/cairo/cairo/issues/342). Thank you
to Tobias Hoffmann for mentioning that in the Launchpad bug report.
Distributions should probably back port that commit. I’ll ask the Cairo
developers to cherry-pick this into the 1.16 branch.
I’ll reassign this to the libcairo2.
Title:
  Unable to correctly print PDF file: Error: Ignoring spurious ET
Status in cairo package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Upstream bug report https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups-
  filters/issues/93.
  The university document
  [antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf](https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups-
  filters/files/2881078/antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf) causes problems on
  different printers.
  Printing on the Canon iR-ADV C2225i using the Canon PCL, an error page
  is first printed, and on the first page after _Email_ everything is
  missing. The second page is fine.
  ```
    Error: Ignoring spurious ET operator. Output may be inco
  ```
  For that printer a special filter `sicgsfilter` has to be used, and is
  distributed by Canon. This also happens with their CQue 4.0-1 release
  from September 2018.
  ```
   *FoomaticRIPCommandLine: "gs -q -dBATCH %F -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE %B%A%C
-dPDFFitPage  -sOutputFile=- - %D%E | sicgsfilter -MPCL -NP %G%H%I -u
-V -n "
  ```
  On the Epson printer _WorkForce WF-2660_, no error page is printed,
  but on the first page everything after _Email_ _is missing_ too.
  Trying to use different pdftops renderers did not make any difference.
  For example,
  ```
   lpr -o pdftops-renderer=pdftops -P chipprinterpcl antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf
  ```
  gave the same result, the same with `pdftocairo`, `acroread`, `mupdf`.
  Following `/usr/share/doc/cups-filters/README.gz` and
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, I verified that the
  exact same PDF is put into the CUPS spool directory, and I captured
  the data sent to the printer with the commands below.
  $ lpadmin -p chipprinterpclfile -E -v file:/tmp/printout -P
~/chipprinterpcl.ppd
  $ lpr -P chipprinterpclfile -o psdebug ~/antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf
  I get the attached Postscript file, which indeed contains the error
  messages.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1817033] Re: Unable to correctly print PDF file: Error: Ignoring spurious ET operator.
2019-02-21 Thread Paul Menzel
Tobias, Till, thank you for your responses. It looks like Launchpad does
not import comments from the upstream report, where I responded.
cups-filters 1.22.1 fixed the issue, as it’s using QPDF for flattening
now. I guess it was fixed in 1.22.0.
The question is, what to do in Ubuntu? Upgrade to cups-filters 1.22.x?
Two more things.
1.  Can you reproduce the issue on your printers?
2.  To report this to the Ghostscript folks – that was used in the error case,
wasn’t it –, I need the command to reproduce this.
So maybe it is a Ghostscript issue.
  Unable to correctly print PDF file: Error: Ignoring spurious ET
Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  Upstream bug report https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups-
  filters/issues/93.
  The university document
  [antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf](https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups-
  filters/files/2881078/antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf) causes problems on
  different printers.
  Printing on the Canon iR-ADV C2225i using the Canon PCL, an error page
  is first printed, and on the first page after _Email_ everything is
  missing. The second page is fine.
  ```
    Error: Ignoring spurious ET operator. Output may be inco
  ```
  For that printer a special filter `sicgsfilter` has to be used, and is
  distributed by Canon. This also happens with their CQue 4.0-1 release
  from September 2018.
  ```
   *FoomaticRIPCommandLine: "gs -q -dBATCH %F -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE %B%A%C
-dPDFFitPage  -sOutputFile=- - %D%E | sicgsfilter -MPCL -NP %G%H%I -u
-V -n "
  ```
  On the Epson printer _WorkForce WF-2660_, no error page is printed,
  but on the first page everything after _Email_ _is missing_ too.
  Trying to use different pdftops renderers did not make any difference.
  For example,
  ```
   lpr -o pdftops-renderer=pdftops -P chipprinterpcl antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf
  ```
  gave the same result, the same with `pdftocairo`, `acroread`, `mupdf`.
  Following `/usr/share/doc/cups-filters/README.gz` and
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, I verified that the
  exact same PDF is put into the CUPS spool directory, and I captured
  the data sent to the printer with the commands below.
  $ lpadmin -p chipprinterpclfile -E -v file:/tmp/printout -P
~/chipprinterpcl.ppd
  $ lpr -P chipprinterpclfile -o psdebug ~/antrag_exmatrikulation.pdf
  I get the attached Postscript file, which indeed contains the error
  messages.
I believe, although bug #1424201 is assigned to *chromium-browser*, it
is too general, as it also mentions and links to Mozilla bug reports.
Therefore, that one should be closed or treated as a “tracking report” –
if Launchpad allows that, and individual reports should be created for
each browser.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1688592] [NEW] Missing VA-API hardware decoding support drains battery
2017-05-05 Thread Paul Menzel
Public bug reported:
Current devices ship with graphics devices supporting hardware decoding
of certain video formats. While doing that, energy can be saved, as the
main processor can go to sleep, and the graphics devices do their jobs
more efficiently saving energy.
Today, the browser is used a lot to watch movies. Unfortunately, the
Firefox browser does not support VA-API hardware decoding, which is the
interface to be used for Intel graphics device, which are included in
current Intel processors.
The issue in the Mozilla bug tracker [1] is open for over two years.
Currently, this missing feature is a major show stopper for people using
Ubuntu GNU/Linux on their laptops, as compared to Microsoft Windows one
battery charge(?) lasts noticeably less time.
Just a small nit pick. In the SRU message it says that part of the
offending commit are reverted. Actually nothing is reverted and the
change just completed.
  Impact:
Currently Brasero will fail to write files to a disc in on-the-fly
mode using the libburnia plugin resulting in 'coastered' media.
This is the default mode of operation and unless the user is writing
a pre-built ISO image, this fails 100% of the time and has since Oneiric
-- possibly Natty.
  Fix:
Revert part of the following commit:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=1b8397ee252df2d554682ca2d694d5937fbf6e39
Particularly the chage to plugins/libburnia/burn-libisofs.c around line
200 that adds an additional priv-libburn_src-read_xt() call.
  Patch:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=253031b69c5dcbcf079c445ec530afb7ccd9ea82
  Test Case:
* Insert blank CD or DVD in drive:
  (1) Attempt to write files to the writable optical disc by dragging
  files from Nautilus to a blank disc.
  (2) Click on the 'Write Files to Disc' button in nautilus.
  (3) Make sure 'on the fly' mode is enabled by selecting 'Burn image
  directly without saving to disc' (which should be the default).
  (4) Click on the 'burn' button.
* If the bug is fixed, you should have a properly written and readable
disc.  Otherwise, the procedure will fail and the disc will be unusable.
  Binary package hint: brasero
  When I burn a DVD (4,7 and 8,5 GB) Brasero show the progressbar till
  about 30-40% (exact point is randomly) and than says, that it is
  finalizing the media. This finalizing messages is showing for the rest
  of the burning process (~10min @8x 8,5GB). After that, it ejects the
  media without any error. But when I insert the media again, nothing
  happens, except, that the DVD-Drive disappears from the computer:///
  location in nautilus.
  This problem only exists when burning On-The-Fly. Burning ISO Images
  or automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without
  problems. The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x,
  4x and 2x. All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works
  quite well @8x speed.
  One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
  while K3B uses just about 5-15%.
  I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that
  it was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about
  28 minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices
  (Linux/Windows).
Also please look at Thomas’ comment. The patch is just for some follow
up comments in this report. The original reporter of this issue
(LP:780117) has a different issue with growisofs. Though closing this
report might be wise and people still experiencing problems with Brasero
should submit new reports as this report here is way to confusing with
all the comments.
  Binary package hint: brasero
  When I burn a DVD (4,7 and 8,5 GB) Brasero show the progressbar till
  about 30-40% (exact point is randomly) and than says, that it is
  finalizing the media. This finalizing messages is showing for the rest
  of the burning process (~10min @8x 8,5GB). After that, it ejects the
  media without any error. But when I insert the media again, nothing
  happens, except, that the DVD-Drive disappears from the computer:///
  location in nautilus.
  This problem only exists when burning On-The-Fly. Burning ISO Images
  or automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without
  problems. The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x,
  4x and 2x. All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works
  quite well @8x speed.
  One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
  while K3B uses just about 5-15%.
  I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that
  it was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about
  28 minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices
  (Linux/Windows).
2012-09-28 Thread Paul Menzel
The way to solve this error, is that people provide the necessary log
files from Brasero and to improve the things Thomas Schmitt and George
Danchev have found out to be incorrect [1].
2012-09-24 Thread Paul Menzel
Parriman, thank you for testing.
Unfortunately without any log files, the developers have a hard time
fixing the error. Do you have log files from failed and successful
burns? It would be great if you could attach those.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)
2012-09-24 Thread Paul Menzel
Perriman, thank you for following up on my question.
I think the only way is to save the log, when Brasero asks you to after
a burn process. You can also look into `/tmp/` for the log.
Are you sure, you are seeing the exact same error as the reporter of
this bug does? That means progress bar stops after 40 %?
If not could you please take a look at Debian bug #688229 and see if the
corrupt DVD medium (coaster(?)) – if you still have it lying around –
exhibits the same symptoms as reported in #688229? That would be
awesome.
I think the most useful steps to try is the following.
$ sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr1 /mnt/
mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
   missing codepage or helper program, or other error
   In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail  or so
$ dmesg | tail # see what the error is
If that fails with the same error, please paste the following.
$ dd if=/dev/sr1 bs=2048 skip=16 count=1 | od -c
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)
2012-08-13 Thread Paul Menzel
Dear Andrea, thank you for testing the patch.
Could you please provide more information. Especially the version of
Brasero, maybe find out if libburn is really disabled and what is used
now. Additionally the versions of the components Brasero depends on and
the any log files from Brasero.
It is sad, that upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655601 does give more
information. Also it makes it more difficult that this bug is discussed
in at least three different places. But the libburnia developers prefer
to use mailing lists and additionally it looks like there are some
problems how Brasero uses libburnia.
So to fix this once and for all, it would be great if you could join the
discussion at #617409 in the Debian BTS. You can easily import the
messages by directly downloading the mbox file [2] or by installing the
package devscripts
$ sudo aptitude install devscripts
and executing `bts show --mbox 617409` and import that message to your
mail program. That reply to the appropriate message with your findings.
For example if I remember correctly Thomas asked to use the command line
tool `xorriso` to test if libburn4 is working correctly on with your
burner [3]. If that is verified the bug in Brasero using libburn4 should
be found and fixed. But the developers definitely need more information
for that.
I am sorry, that there does not seem to be an easier way to solve this
issue.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)
2012-07-05 Thread Paul Menzel
A similar bug report is on Debian [1], but it is not known yet if all
talk about the same cause the original reporter was seeing.
Anyway the libburnia developers stepped up and cooked up some patches
for you to try please to gather some more information what goes wrong.
So please apply Georges patch [3] and post the result to the discussion
(on the Debian bug tracker, since they are doing the work currently)
doing the following to keep threading.
$ sudo aptitude install devscripts
$ bts show --mbox 617409 # downloads the messages from the archive \
# quit possible opened mail client like mutt by pressing key q
Now import that file from `$HOME/.devscripts_cache/bts/` into your mail
program. Choose George’s message and hit reply to all and write your
results (quote properly and delete unimportant stuff in George’s
message) and attach the log files.
Thanks,
Paul
  This problem only exists when burning On-The-Fly. Burning ISO Images
  or automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without
  problems. The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x,
  4x and 2x. All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works
  quite well @8x speed.
  One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
  while K3B uses just about 5-15%.
  I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that
  it was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about
  28 minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices
  (Linux/Windows).
