[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1428591] Re: Dash crashes when trying to authenticate soundcloud scope with google, empty auth page

2015-03-05 Thread Pawel Stolowski
** Also affects: canonical-devices-system-image
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

  1. Go to Soundcloud scope
  2. Hit Log-in to SoundCloud button
  3. Choose 'Sign in with Google' on the SoundCloud auth page
  4. Fill in google account credentials, confirm soundcloud permissions

Result: a blank page with 'Cancel' button, no way to navigate back,
hitting it crashes the dash (I couldn't get a usable backtrace).
+
+ NB, this works fine when authenticating using a genuine Soundcloud
+ account. It seems like authenticating via Google is causing the problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1266784] Re: GPU hangs during login to rotated display

2014-02-27 Thread Pawel Stolowski
I get this error pretty consistently when having desktop effects enabled
and using google hangouts at the same time; it makes my screen freeze
for several seconds, sometimes it recovers after a while (and freezes
again some time later), but sometimes it freezes completely and I'm
forced to do hard reset. When this happens, I see same i915 error
messages as in the description of this bug.

Title:
GPU hangs during login to rotated display

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This is occuring when I change users, and when I log in from the login GUI,
but not 100% of the time (!).
  It just started yesterday.

Boot brings up the graphical login screen normally. I log in with the
primary/only user, and the screen goes very dark and I get just a mouse pointer
which appears and moves if I use the mouse (trackpad or etc).
I don't seem to be able to get windows to work, but if I could I couldn't see
them, since the screen stays black except for that pointer.

If I type Ctrl-Alt-F1, it takes a few seconds rather than less than 1
to get to a TTY. There, there is a steady but slow stream of errors
coming up that look like this:

*ERROR* render ring hung inside bo (0) at (0)
  drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed
i915_set_reset_status *ERROR* render ring hung inside bo

I can however, log in fine in TTY and access my files. It looks like nothing
much is running (top), and I don't see the normal X processes.

This is making my computer unusable. I'm running on the latest 13.10 on a
Lenovo thinkpad X230tablet.
I don't think I made any changes. There was one update that occurred shortly
before this started yesterday, but it doesn't have anything suspicious-looking
in it. It was:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-16 Thread Pawel Stolowski
This is by design: apps in Home should only include installed apps.
More suggestions in Applications scope is the only place in the dash
where additional apps available from S-C should be listed.

While it would be relatively simple to display suggested apps in Home,
it would mean they would be mixed together with recently used
applications (since in Home results coming from a scope are merged and
collapse into single category).

I'm seeing rightly on forums and generally the Internet that 100scopes

On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application
takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no
button to launch the application (because you didn't double click,
just left click and thought argh, I should have double click).

Because of this, we are making the 1st landing of 100 scopes
experience bad and we should fix it (at least, in that applicatoin
lens) by either preloading the software-center-dbus (/usr/share
/software-center/software-center-dbus) daemon (we can't have it always
running as it's taking over 100MB of memory) when hovering an app lens
result, or when it's the first result (so can be directly triggered by
  pressing [Enter])

This works fine from 13.04 (probably also in 12.10 but I cannot verify
this at the moment), we display top apps (as reported vy Software
Center) if the query is empty, otherwise only apps matching the query
and selected app categories. Please re-open the bug if you still see any
problem with it.

For example dash home more apps accessibility this time around

Seems those are all games? Not accessibility?

I can click it, and the Applications menu goes away, making me think

  Not a bug specifically, but...

It would be really nice if, when you hit Super and start typing the
name of an application you wish to open, Unity behaved more like
GNOME-Do. What I mean is that in Unity's current form, you have to
type the proper name of the application. Whereas in GNOME-Do, you can
just hit a few characters from it and it will find it for you. For
example, Synaptic Package Manager. In Unity you have to start typing
  S Y N, but in GNOME-Do you could type S M or S P or S P M, etc and it
knows what you mean. The letters don't have to be adjacent to each
other in the name of the application for GNOME-Do, but they must be in
Unity. This would be a nice little feature to have, and would make
Unity that little bit more unifying.

  ---
Second description of same issue from dupe bug:

This could be seen as a wishlist, but in my opinion the current
  behavior is unexpected.

When using dash and starting writing the name of the application/file,
I expected the match being done with *all* the name of the
application, not just the *start*. I mean, if I type dict, I expect
  to see both Dictionary and StarDict. I notices this several time;
you often remember part of the name of the application and sometime it
is not the start of it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1189060] Re: Dash: com.canonical.Unity.Lenses 'home-lens-default-view', scope id's that are listed should remain enabled once a search is started

2013-08-20 Thread Pawel Stolowski
This is not a bug and it works as designed (but I recon it's confusing
and not easy to discover).

The 'default view' is the view of home with empty search string (aka
surfacing mode) and this key dictates what scopes should be queried in
this mode. Whilst in the default view, user can *modify* it be
selecting/deselecting filters to personalize it. The change becomes
permanent (stored in dconf) as long as search string is empty. Note that
not every scopes (actually, very few of them at the moment) surface any
data for empty queries.

Bug description:
I'm seeing rightly on forums and generally the Internet that 100scopes
previews are slow, combined with the fact that we now have the left
click showing the preview by default frustrate a lot of users.

Bug description:
Currently when the user installs an app from a Dash App Previews, an
animation is triggered whereby the icon travels downwards from the BFB
(Dash launcher icon) to it's new location in the Launcher. This is
  incorrect.

The animation should start at the app icon *inside the preview* (the
icon to the top right side of the preview image), and show the icon
travelling from this location to it's new position in the launcher
(the end position in the current animation is correct).

So when the user clicks 'install', two things should happen simultaneously:
  1) The Dash closes
  2) The app icon travels from the location it was a moment ago inside the app
preview across the screen to it's new location in the Launcher

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1054085] Re: Icons missing in previews for some purchasable items

2012-09-21 Thread Pawel Stolowski
** Description changed:

Previews for some purchasable items in the Dash are missing icons and
display a generic icon instead. Software-center-dbus should upload
missing icons into ~/.cache/software-center/icons on demand when
  applications details are requested.
+
+ When icon is loaded on demand, software-center-dbus should send
+ icon_added(s) dbus signal, passing icon name. Icon name should be

2012-09-05 Thread Pawel Stolowski
After some discussions IRC it was decided that unity-application-lens
should rely on raw_price property rather than price, as price will
contain a localized price string and localized 'Free' string for free
apps.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 989554] [NEW] Some windows loose decoration on small screen

2012-04-27 Thread Pawel Stolowski
Public bug reported:

Windows that have some size constraints (i.e. can't be made smaller than their
original size) and don't have enough space on the screen on startup, loose
decorations when started on small screen.

Preconditions:
- screen resolution 800x600.
- a panel taking some space on the left (in my case - unity-2d launcher, always
shown).

I observed this problem for two applications: gnome-control-center and dejadup
in Ubuntu 12.04. It seems that metacity considers them maximized if they don't
have enough horizontal space on start.

There is a gconf metacity flag - show_maximized_titlebars - if set, then the
problem is gone, however the window can't be made fullscreen, as metacity seems
to consider it maximized already.

  1) Open Firefox, go into its menu (History) and search for a site you've been
visiting. (Let's call it foo.)
  2) Press and release ALT to open HUD
  3) Enter foo into the appearing search bar.
  4) HUD stops responding. After a few seconds, HUD disappears and apport opens.

This is not absolutely reproducible. Immediately after the steps
  described above, I got this:

  5) Press and release ALT to open HUD
  6) Enter foo into the appearing search bar.
  7) HUD shows the entry foo in firefox-history as expected.

i could type text there instead of into the hud.

The the HUD crashed. Interestingly, the global menu appears a rather
strange position in the top bar: somewhat near the center instead of
the left corner (see the attached screenshot). Im not sure if this is
