[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1639471] Re: nvidia-367 broken by upgrade to .57

2016-11-05 Thread Peter Silva
I fixed it with:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia

reboot.

no idea what that did.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1380996] Re: File size for backups not user-defineable

2015-05-06 Thread Peter Silva
here is a very small patch that just adds a dconf setting. So people
who do not care, will not see it. But I need it. I did some backups
with 250MB chunks, and I did not notice any slow down vs. 25mb chunks
that are the default, but I don't really care how long it takes, I need
the big chunks on the other end.

** Patch added: patch to add dconf setting so that only advanced users see it.

Deja-Dup still has file size for backups hard-coded?!? but not user-defined.

It is allways good to have a standard that fits for most user, but the

to rewrite the whole program would be nice.

Please make the filesize for the backups an option in settings tab.

2015-04-06 Thread Peter Silva
Affects me too with an ASUS video card with AMD HD 7850. It started
because I had a really poor frame rate on Steam game CS:GO. was trying
to get latest driver from AMD (14.5) but it would never work (could not
get GL to work with the driver installed, had no unity, GL failed to
load) so backed out to open source driver, and then updated to the
hardware enablement stack, and tried to install just the normal fglrx.
no go. so now steam works, but I'm on the open drivers, and cannot
really play CS:GO at all (frame rate unusable.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1100874] [NEW] lockscreen presents no unlock dialog

2013-01-17 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Standard Unity. Have a laptop on a docking station, with a second
monitor connected. Lock the screen, go away for sufficient time for the
displays to blank. when I return, hit a key, the external display
powers up, but just shows me the background set for my account, no
dialog to unlock the screen, the laptop display does not even power up.
no way to unlock the screen. I move the mouse around, to where it
should be on the laptop screen, but that screen stays dark. There is
no disk activity and no cpu load during this event, it is not busy, it
just does not present the dialog.

I do not know if this is what fixes it, but I do it every time:
Ctrl-F1, log into a terminal session, then switch back and forth
Ctrl-F7 a few times and after a few minutes it will present a dialog,
and can then unlock.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 704123] Re: PIN is asked despite it's configured into the system connection

2012-06-22 Thread Peter Silva
This bug still occurs on precise, using 0.9.4. I can connect (without
using the PIN), the PIN is entered in the configuration, but while
connected it prompts to enter the pin, then states that the PIN cannot
be applied while connected. I disconnect, then apply unlock, and can
connect again.

Title:
PIN is asked despite it's configured into the system connection

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

  I've configured a system-wide 3g broadband connection.
In fact it's there a file with all the provided details in
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ .
  If I switch (log-out + log-in) to a non-administrative user, as soon as I
plug the USB 3G modem I get asked the modem PIN.
This is included into the mentioned file.
The objective is to allow a normal user to connect with the modem with out
the knowledge of username, password and PIN.
  The defails follow.

  $ lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 10.10
  Release: 10.10
  Codename: maverick

  How to reproduce the bug:
  1. Log in as an administrative user (the first one you create at installation
time)
  2. Plug the USB 3G modem into a port
  3. Go to System--Preferences--Newtwork Connections--Mobile Broadband
  4. Fill all the needed details (as well as the PIN)
  5. Check Automatically connect and Available to all users
  6. Test the connection is working.
  7. Check the file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
  8. Reboot (maybe just logout and long is enough)
  9. Log in as the administrative user
  10. Plug the USB modem

  What happens
The system asks for the PIN. You can ignore this request. Then you can go to
the
netowrk icon and select the broadband connection and click it. This time the
PIN
is not required and the connection fires up.

  What is expected to happen
No PIN is required at the modem insertion and the connection fires up
automatically.

  Extra steps.
  11. Create another non administrative user which is capable to connect
through modems (groups dialout and dip).
  12. Switch to this new user
  13. Plug the USB modem.

  What happens
The system asks for aìthe PIN. You cannot ignore this request.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 963943] [NEW] nm overrides LAN dns settings: host lookups on LAN fail.

2012-03-24 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

There is a local network, with two DNS servers, and a DHCP server. They
are both correctly configured and entirely functional, with correct
zoning (bind9) for split-horizon DNS. This has been a working
configuration for years. DHCP is configured so that clients use these
internal DNS servers.

There is no configuration in /etc/network/interfaces, so this is
entirely run by network-manager. When the wireless configuration comes
up, rather than pointing at the LAN dns servers, it points at 127.0.0.1.
I can identify no process providing the caching servics, ps -ax | grep
ns, name, bind, all come up empty. Whatever is doing name resolution,
it is not using the LAN's DNS servers, because none of the internal zone
entries are available. While public name resolution works, ssh to
other systems on the LAN fail because the internal zone host names are
never found.

If I manually place the local dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf,
everything works fine for a few minutes, when something overwrites it
back to 127.0.0.1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 963943] Re: nm overrides LAN dns settings: host lookups on LAN fail.

2012-03-24 Thread Peter Silva
I also wonder if this is some sort of infection... some strange process
hijacking DNS.

Title:
nm overrides LAN dns settings: host lookups on LAN fail.

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
There is a local network, with two DNS servers, and a DHCP server.
They are both correctly configured and entirely functional, with
correct zoning (bind9) for split-horizon DNS. This has been a working
configuration for years. DHCP is configured so that clients use these
  internal DNS servers.

There is no configuration in /etc/network/interfaces, so this is
entirely run by network-manager. When the wireless configuration
comes up, rather than pointing at the LAN dns servers, it points at
127.0.0.1. I can identify no process providing the caching servics,
ps -ax | grep ns, name, bind, all come up empty. Whatever is doing
name resolution, it is not using the LAN's DNS servers, because none
of the internal zone entries are available. While public name
resolution works, ssh to other systems on the LAN fail because the
internal zone host names are never found.

If I manually place the local dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf,
everything works fine for a few minutes, when something overwrites it
  back to 127.0.0.1

2012-03-24 Thread Peter Silva
Please close bug, I figured out that bind9 had been installed on the
client with the issue. the bind was just running a default
configuration. Once it is removed, resolv.conf has the normal entries
in it.

Bug description:

  Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
  Release:10.04

WPA wireless N network(Linksys DIR-655 router, WPA) was working reliably
under Karmic Kubuntu using either knetworkmanager or nm-applet. Since upgrade
to Lucid, it is very difficult to connect using: knetworkmanager, and/or
nm-applet. (started trying the others because knetworkmanager was at around 10%
success rate.) nm-applet seems to work more often than the others, but it is
still only, perhaps 30% successful. I downloaded cnetworkmanager (python line
mode api to dbus/networkmanager) to better see what is going on, similar rate
of success to nm-applet

none of the tools seem to store the SSID password anymore, always have
  to re-enter it manually.

What is the correct kde network manager applet: network-manager-kde
  (kwifimanager) or the plasmoid?

Regardless of method, they see the SSID, and try to connect, but
rarely succeed just hang in ´connecting´ or ´activating´ and
  eventually give up.

  Often resorting to hard-wired connection.

It's so annoying to enter your password each time you resume from

I have two desktop systems that are not intended to ever go into sleep
mode. The keyboards have the sleep key right near the escape key, and
even no the screen, suspend and hibernate are too close to logout and
lock screen, without and any confirmation, and typically about twenty
minutes of work to recover. I think I toasted a raid device out of
this. working on recovery.
