[Desktop-packages] [Bug 330833] Re: NetworkManager always overwrites default route when connecting to OpenVPN network

2020-09-25 Thread Peter Würtz
Well, it's 2020 now. I'm stunned to see that Ubuntu chooses VPN as the
IPv6 default route, even when choosing IPv6 "Disable" in the VPN
settings :( (completely ignored by the way).

  Binary package hint: network-manager

  My office VPN has IMAP, (forwarding) DNS services and not much else.
  It doesn't forward client traffic to the Internet. This means I can't
  use the VPN server as a default gateway.

  Every time I connect to the VPN using NetworkManager/OpenVPN, my
  routing table gets a default route to the VPN. I've tried everything
  to avoid this in both the Intrepid package and the version from the
  network manager PPA with no success. Even telling NetworkManager to
  ignore routes from the server doesn't work.

  As it is right now, I have to connect to the VPN, delete the default
  route, and re-add my wireless router as the default gateway before I
  can have both email and web access.

  See attached routing table details.

Bug description:
  First time I use an USB drive since I updated to 12.04 and I found a
  really annoying bug on Nautilus. Nautilus claims that the destination
  drive is read-only when in fact it is not.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Connect a USB stick drive to your competer.
  2. The USB will appear in the desktop.
  3. Open two Nautilus windows one in your home folder, other in the USB stick
drive.
  4. Select any file from your home folder (small enough to fit the free space
in the USB drive)
  5. Drag the file and drop it in the USB drive window.

  -- Nautilus will say that it cannot copy the file because the
  destination is read ony --

  If you try the copy the same file with the terminal you will see that
  the file is copied without problem, other programs like gedit or
  LibreOffice can write in the usb stick drive just fine.

  It is not a problem with the USB stick, as shown here:

  But nautilus just dennies to copy the file claming that the

  I tested it with two different USB sticks in two different computers

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 941826] Re: dlopen(libGL.so) resolves to mesa rather than nvidia

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Würtz
I don't even understand the argument. Lets turn it around/right again:
Why not just dlopen libGL.so? Any application should be able to dlopen
libGL.so.

"libGL.so" is the library name everyone agrees to and everyone expects
to find, which is exactly why this file exists in the first place,
doesn't it? One should expect that this primary library name points to
the most reasonable and (before all else) WORKING OpenGL library. If a
distribution decides to do some name mangling for maintaining multiple
versions or vendors it is of course free to do so. Please name it
"libGL.so.foo" or "libGl.so.bar" if you want, buy why is it necessary
for pyqt to know about your naming decision and most importantly: Why is
it necessary to stick with a broken(!) default configuration?

It baffles me that it took 4 years to boil it down to one line of not
giving a damn.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1472622] [NEW] Unity doesn't update or freezes contents within application window

2015-07-08 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

When switching between different application windows there is a chance that the
contents of a window just freeze. For me this happens with Firefox quite often,
and extremely often when using QtCreator. Once such a window is frozen,
scrolling or keyboard input seems to work, but you won't see any effect because
the window contents are not updated anymore.
You can re-animate such a frozen window again by just resizing it a bit, but
it will get stuck again some time later after switching between windows.

  Test under both Unity and GNOME shell (and optionally other DEs) that

  [ Development fix ]

  Identical  already uploaded.

  [ Regression potential ]

  Due to the nature of this change, you won't get the app menu when full
  screened under Unity any more - langs and subtitles can only be
  selected from the regular menu which is visible when not in full
  screen.

  No other regressions are expected, so if you find any please report in

Sorry, but why did you remove the my reported regression concerning the
menu in VLC?

What is the solution now? Totem gets some workaround, but the bug in
Unity/Appmenu remains, leaving VLC and who knows how many other
applications in a broken state?

  you can load a video (e.g.

http://trailers.divx.com/divx_prod/divx_plus_hd_showcase/Sintel_DivXPlus_6500kbps.mkv
  [large - 819M]) with subtitles and languages and select between them.

  [ Development fix ]

  Identical  already uploaded.

  [ Regression potential ]

  Due to the nature of this change, you won't get the app menu when full
  screened under Unity any more - langs and subtitles can only be
  selected from the regular menu which is visible when not in full
  screen.

  No other regressions are expected, so if you find any please report in
  this bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1447224] Re: Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-04-26 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, I read about restoring subtitle functionality by switching to
fullscreen in #1448234, which gave me an idea. There is nothing wrong
with totem or vlc. Yet again its Ubuntu's appmenu that botches up
applications. After uninstalling appmenu everything works as expected.

2015-04-26 Thread Peter Würtz
As stated in a similar bug report

that appmenu is responsible for the missing menu items.

  The old situation was much easier because the search is done on a file

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 941826] Re: PyQt cannot compile shaders with Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers

2014-08-12 Thread Peter Würtz
Please also have a look at my example and workaround in #10. As
described in #5, the problem seems to be an error when python
dynamically loads the required opengl libraries. Unfortunately we still
don't know what exactly goes wrong and why it only affects python qt
bindings loading the ubuntu-packaged nvidia driver.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 941826] Re: PyQt cannot compile shaders with Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers

2014-08-12 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, I think I found the problem.

Apparently the PyQt application ends up loading the Mesa GL library
(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0) instead of the NVidia
driver (/usr/lib/nvidia-331/libGL.so.331.38) that is loaded when
importing PyOpenGL first.

The difference seems to be the library name when calling dlopen().
PyOpenGL tries to import libGL.so.1, whereas PyQt imports libGL.so,
without the .1 suffix.

A simple C application calling dlopen() and checking /proc/pid/maps
shows that libGL.so points to the Mesa driver, whereas libGL.so.1
ends up loading the NVidia driver.

So this is a bug in Ubuntu's NVidia package I assume?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 941826] Re: PyQt cannot compile shaders with Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers

2014-08-12 Thread Peter Würtz
The first entry of libGL.so in ldconfig -p points to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so, which is a symlink to the mesa
driver. After deleting that link pyqt works fine as expected. That
symlink belongs to the libgl1-mesa-dev package and seems to overrule
the libGL.so entries in ldconfig for the nvidia driver.

Hm, this bug here existed already in 2012, whereas bug 1248642 is a
regression from a change in binutils in 2013. Also, this missing
libpthread.so.0 link problem shouldn't apply since the main application,
python, is definitely linked to it:

$ objdump -pR /usr/bin/python | grep libpthread

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1248642] Re: dynamic library inconsistencies with OpenGL/C++

2014-01-16 Thread Peter Würtz
@Daniel Dadap, @Brian Nguyen
This kind of problem seems to be similar to a very old and persistent bug where
PyQt cannot create shaders when using the NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu (bug #941826).
This small script
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-qt4/+bug/941826/+attachment/3950419/+files/nvidia-python-qt-bug.py)
 demonstrates the problem and a workaround by preloading another opengl
module. This really looks related, I don't see how though since the problem is
way older and python is definitely linked to pthreads.

Title:
  dynamic library inconsistencies with OpenGL/C++

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-319” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  While using the nvidia-319 driver, the following C++ program won't
  run:

  $ cat  test.cpp  EOF
  #include string
  #include GL/gl.h
  int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
std::string s;
glEnable(GL_LIGHT0);
  }
  EOF

  Instead, it fails with the following error message:
  $ g++ test.cpp -lGL
  $ ./a.out
  Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-version.c: 224: _dl_check_map_versions:
Assertion `needed != ((void *)0)' failed!

  Using the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver, the problem does not
  occur. Also, when std::string is not used, the program runs without
  problems. Using OpenGL from pure C programs is also not a problem. The
  problem can be reproduced with both g++-4.6 and g++-4.8.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1241988] Re: All pyqt5 quick examples fails with shader program link error

2014-01-08 Thread Peter Würtz
I already reported this problem years ago when I tried running PyQt4
applications on OpenGl.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-qt4/+bug/941826

Some Ubuntu specific modification in the nvidia driver package causes
shader compilation errors in PyQt and PySide.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2011-12-02 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok this is getting nasty. The latest experience with this bug (Ubuntu
11.10) when trying to edit/save a textfile is a dialog popping up,
telling me that gedit is unable to save the file. If you decide to close
the editor for some reason now, the file is completely gone. You didn't
just loose your changes, you lost the complete text file. There might be
an invisible ~backup file around, but from a users point of view, the
file is gone.

Can we please make that bug critical?

Bug description:
  Saving files over a cifs/smbfs server doesnt work. You can open file,
  edit then save perfectly. But repeated saves after give you this
  error:

  The file /home/dhonn/website/arrays.php has been modified since
  reading it. If you save it, all the external changes could be lost.
  Save it anyway?

  The think is lying to me because I havent made any external changes.

  When I click Save Anyway, i get this error:

  Could not save the file /home/dhonn/website/arrays.php.

  But on the third try it works just fine.

  Here are the error messages, btw there are also GUI glitches too:
