Title:
  Ubuntu Gnome Dock Randomly Dies

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Since upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04, I have noticed that the dock (which I
have at the bottom) will randomly die. When this happens:

  * The dock is reduced to just the "Show Applications" icon
  * One or more open applications will no longer accept events (mouse or
keyboard)
  * Ctrl-` (and sometimes Ctrl-TAB) cease working

I can restore it by hitting Alt-F2 and then "r" in the dialog. When
this happens, icons on my status bar (Slack, Dropbox, etc.) are
doubled. The extra icons go away after the screensaver kicks in and is
  then unlocked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1759300] Re: Gnome Shell: Touchpad right click (bottom right) area does not work

2018-10-15 Thread Randy
The claim that "You can get the old behavior back with the GNOME Tweaks
app" is simply not true. You can toggle between the two menu methods
(two-finger tap and bottom-right click), but I cannot get back the old
behavior of being able to do BOTH. This is not asking people to choose
between the Mac method and the Windows method; this is asking people to
choose between the Mac method and some hobbled version of the Windows
method.

Subject: Mama I love you!

RNA seq is essentially the same as DNA seq. There is just an extra
step in which a reverse transcriptase enzyme turns RNA into DNA.

The issue at hand is that you have to sample frequently as RNA is
short-lived. You also have to keep the samples in the cold or treat them
with an inhibitor for the enzyme that degrades RNA.

My guess is that the limit here is how fast you can sample without
hurting the octopus.

If you'd like me to go over it with you on PM, I'll do so happily.
D/s is typically very poorly understood as I said.

I feel as though most of what you'd be keen on hearing, minus the sex
that is, is more along the lines of Pillow Talk Audio's sub-reddit.
I'm honestly not entirely sure how I'd go about recording a massage.
That's, an interesting conundrum you've presented me. As I've
mentioned elsewhere, I enjoy romance as much as I enjoy my darker
half. The problem is, there isn't a plethora of gentler pieces to
work with and there is in fact a plethora for my darker half to feed
on. I also work best either Live or with a bit of time to know the
individual for whom the piece is being made for.

Confirming that Simon Quigley's packages here:

Resolve the issue (using the 1024 file transfer method described in the

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Without these fixes, copying any more than a few files in several file
managers including but not limited to Nautilus and Caja either completely
freezes up the file manager (if this happens with a Cut and Paste, it destroys
user data by leaving files half moved) or slows it down to a crawl. These bugs
are not found when using the mv command in the terminal, which will copy the
files in a couple of seconds at maximum. This is a nightmare for people who
want to Cut and Paste a lot of files and who need to do it quickly.

  [Test Case]
Either find some files that you would be OK losing (or have a backup for) or
create the files yourself. You can run the following command to generate 1024
empty 1 MB files (do this in an empty directory, where you have at least 1 GB
of free space), which is a valid way to reproduce this bug:

  i=1 && while [ $i -lt 1025 ]; do dd if=/dev/zero of=$i bs=4k
  iflag=fullblock,count_bytes count=1M; i=$[$i+1]; done

  (Credit to https://stackoverflow.com/a/11779492/4123313 and
  http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guide/html/sect_09_02.html - also,
neither truncate or fallocate are used because the bug cannot be
reproduced when using those tools, my theory is that with dd it
actually writes the zeroes, with those tools, they say they wrote the
zeroes to the filesystems but it seems they actually didn't (something
along the lines of that), although I could be wrong)

If you open Nautilus or Caja, and Cut and Paste these 1024 files
somewhere else, the transfer will slow to a crawl, and in one instance
where I tried this with 1024 empty 512 MB files, Nautilus actually
crashed. This is very different to using mv in the terminal before
doing it in the file manager, which transfers these files flawlessly.

Once this fix is applied and I recreate these files, the transfer in
Nautilus and Caja is almost as fast as using mv (I'd say within a
second), which is what should happen.

[Breakdown of the patches and the regression potential for each]
First, I'd like to thank levien for providing the patch links to fix this.
Without that, it would have been a bit more work to hunt down which patches are
applicable.

  lp1133477-metadata-use-sequences-instead-of-lists.patch:
Patch Description: The metabuilder stores files and data in sorted lists. An
insertion into a sorted list is done in linear time, which highly affects
efficiency. In order to fix this, use GSequence instead which does insertion
and deletion in logarithmic time.

This patch is in here because it helps with a large amount of files.
Regardless if the files are 1 MB or 10 GB, the sorting of the files to
be moved/copied is inefficient. This addresses part of the problem by
making sure large amount of files can be dealt with efficiently. The
regression potential for this is low, and the only case that I can see
where a package would regress is a file manager that depends on (not
100% on this theory but it's a possibility) monitoring the status of
the list at a given time, and is incompatible with using GSequence. In
this case, the package would have something peculiar hardcoded, and
would most likely have an upstream fix that could be backported
because this fix is in the gvfs release that is already in 17.04 and
later (so they should have fixed it already). I can't think of a
package that does this (from what I can tell, it's not sane code if it
isn't compatible with this change) but if something does regress, it
  should be trivial to fix.

  lp1133477-metadata-use-queues-instead-of-lists.patch:
Patch Description: Some of the lists used by the metabuilder have items
appended to them. Appending to a list is done in linear time and this highly
affects efficiency. In order to fix this, use GQueue which supports appending
in constant time.

This patch is extremely similar in function to the last one, but this
one addresses items appended to a list instead of files and data in
sorted lists. As such, the regression potential is similar (low)
because it would involve a package hardcoding some things that are

Subject: good shit

Samurai Warriors 4. It has enough changes to the standard Dynasty
Warriors formula (combat finishers, special attacks, character
switching, tactical elements, etc.) to stand on its own, and it also
has some top-notch writing and replayability.

It's not without its faults, but it's probably the best game to come out of
the entire Warriors/Musou franchise, and in my opinion, the gameplay puts
Sengoku Basara (and Dynasty Warriors 8) to shame.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1447251] Re: Window switcher freezes with 3 finger tap and hold

2015-04-23 Thread Randy
** Description changed:

Sometimes the window switcher will pop up and then become unresponsive
for a few seconds. I believe this happens with a three finger tap and
hold (because it happens when I am using two finger scrolling and a
third finger could easily brush the touchpad), but I have ever been able
to replicate the bug on purpose. I am using a Synaptic pad with multi-
  touch.

The expected behavior is that dragging to the left or right with three
fingers after the switcher appears will move the highlighted window
choosing cursor (the best description I can think of) to the left or
right and then releasing the touch will immediately switch to the
selected window. Instead I must wait for the switcher to time out,
because the highlighted window choosing cursor will not move.

I can make the switcher go away with a right click outside the switcher
  box.
+
+ Also affects Ubuntu 14.04.2.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2015-01-02 Thread Randy
I'm not sure if this is correct forum protocol but I'd like to add info
to my previous post about substituting the Nouveau drivers for the
proprietary Nvidia drivers in Lubuntu 14.10 with Nvidia GeForce 7300GS
drivers. As stated that eliminated the broken pipe error, but I've
since upgraded the Linux kernel in my OS to 3.18.0, reinstalled the
Nvidia 304.125 drivers and...no broken pipe error!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2014-12-23 Thread Randy
Most of this is way over my head. Man, do I envy and admire all you who are
light years ahead of this 59 yr. old who never touched a computer until a few
yrears ago. I'm posting this for the many newbie users out there like me.
I too was getting the init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken
pipe error in Lubuntu 14.10 with Nvidia GE 7300 Force using the recommended
Nvidia 304 drivers (I got the error most of the time- but not always- although
the boot always completed and I was always able to use the machine with no
other errors).
It just bugged me enough to start researching the error. I've read all the
posts above and I'm really confused now. From the posts it seems the concensus
is that its not necessarily Nvidia-related, but I decided anyhow to revert back
to the basic Nouveau drivers...just for giggles and kicks the error is no
more, and Lubuntu still seems to be flawless. Hmmm.
Maybe this will help someone who gets the error and can't even get their
machine to boot. Worth a try.

When I give up remote login an Ubuntu error report is initiated and I

a credentials error that I should see a selection of Remote Login options.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1115886] Re: Can't change wallpaper unless /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons is true.

2013-12-01 Thread Randy Bass
It's not a bug, it's a feature. Yeah, right. Who's idea was it to say
this isn't a bug? And then you need to install some other app to
override it? I tried the recommended operations above, and it still
didn't work for me. This is totally bogus.

Title:
  Can't change wallpaper unless /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-
  desktop-icons is true.

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
When I logged into my computer today, Unity wasn't showing my
wallpaper. The first thing I tried was to go into the Appearance
settings and change the wallpaper. At first, I was not able to make
any changes to the wallpaper. Then I started tinkering around with
dconf, just to see if I could find any settings that might interfere
  with the wallpaper.

What I found was that /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons
was set to false, but if I set it to true, then the regular Appearance
settings panel was able to change the wallpaper. and again, if I set
it back to false, then I was no longer able to change what wallpaper
  is used.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Using dconf, set /org/gnome/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons
  to false

  2. Using Gear menu - System Settings - Appearance, try to change the
  wallpaper. You can't.

  3. Set show-desktop-icons back to true.

  4. Change the wallpaper now -- it works.

So, this is quite strange to me -- turning on show-desktop-icons
doesn't actually render any icons on my desktop. It only enables the
wallpaper switching to work. My best guess as to what is happening
here is that show-desktop-icons really just means make nautilus
render root window, and somehow I've stumbled onto a bug by which
g-s-d can no longer render the wallpaper for itself, so turning on
show-desktop-icons forces nautilus to take over, where it is
  successful in rendering the wallpaper.

Let me know if there's any additional information I can provide, and I
will happily cooperate in troubleshooting ;-)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 835153] Re: oosplash.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in XSetForeground()

2011-09-06 Thread Randy Perkins
i was opening a password protected oo doc file that was located on an
nfs share. file opened fine. didnt even see this crash notice until i
closed firefox that had been running. I was manually installing 64 bit
flash player when I noticed crash dialog. dont think that had anything
to do with crash. Note I am running gnome shell. thanks for all your
hard work.
