[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore
Not sure how affected we are. Nightcolor uses geoclue which is disabled
by default and I guess users will have to use the google option when the
time comes ( not necessarily easy, but an option. ) We do not have
location settings in systemsettings.

  Disable location services in gnome-control-center

Bug description:

Mozilla Location Services will be closed to all third parties (including
Ubuntu, GNOME, KDE, etc.) on June 12, 2024.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any suitable replacement
for our typical desktop and laptop users. (Mobile devices like phones
may have GPS that could be used but those devices would only rarely be
  using Ubuntu and gnome-control-center.)

To avoid later UI changes and disruption only a few months from now,
the Ubuntu Desktop team would prefer to disable location services
before Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is released.

  Details
  ---
  Specifically, this hides
  - Privacy & Security > Location
  - Date & Time > Automatic Timezone
  - Displays > Night Light > Schedule > Sunrise to Sunset
+ This last one wasn't done yet, but I expect it for gnome-control-center
46.1 which will be an SRU
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/3014

  Other Info
  --
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/2959

gnome-control-center 46.1 to be released in a few days will also
disable Location Services by default but with a build-time option for
distros who have different deadlines and user profiles.

If an alternative location provider is found that works well enough
for our users, we intend to re-enable this feature with a Stable
  Release Update if possible.

Because of this issue, Ubuntu has disabled the Location page in gnome-
  initial-setup for 24.04 LTS already.

Bug description:
Filing this against ubuntu-meta since I believe this is a seed problem
that potentially affects all variants of Ubuntu (flavors or
  otherwise).

wslu is "a collection of utilities for the Windows 10 Linux Subsystem,
such as for converting Linux paths to a Windows paths or creating
Linux application shortcuts on the Windows 10 Desktop." Obviously this
package should *never* be installed on a desktop or even on most VMs,
but only within WSL instances. However...

wslu provides the virtual package www-browser, as one of its features
is to open links in Windows 10 using the default browser set there.
This means that if a package depends or recommends www-browser, it may
attempt to pull in one of several packages, wslu included. In the
past, this hasn't been a problem because Firefox was present on all
flavor images, and Firefox provides www-browser as well. However, now
that Firefox is a Snap, it is possible for Firefox to be installed
without the firefox transitional apt package being installed. (This is
the case in a default installation of Kubuntu Noble Beta.) As it turns
out, Kubuntu Noble Beta ships with *no* packages that provide www-
browser, meaning that any package that depends on it will have to
  install a new browser.

Due to some stroke of misfortune, apt is picking wslu out of all
packages as the package for this use case. Installing gimp-help-en
will also install www-browser, which results in wslu becoming
  installed.

wslu causes quite a few problems when installed on a desktop system -
among them, the syslog is spammed with errors due to the system not in
fact being a WSL VM, audio breaks in weird ways, and application
launchers sometimes fail. Why this happens is unclear, but the issues
appear to resolve once wslu is removed from the system. It is
therefore probably a good idea to avoid wslu becoming installed on
  accident in this way.

Probably the best way to resolve this is to ensure that some package
that provides www-browser is available on every Ubuntu image. This
could be done via seeding or by adding a package to ubuntu-minimal.
Alternatively, wslu could be set to no longer provide www-browser,
though it's unclear if that would break its functionality.

So it seems the instructions for using cups printing here:

is wrong. It broke everything. I have removed cups from krita and users
will have to manually connect. With that snaps are broken for Beta.
Sigh.

[HP ProBook 440 G8 Notebook PC, Realtek ALC236, Speaker, Internal] No sound

From testing sound came but not from google chrome
  ---=== Update ===---
False alarm. Sound i was able to put back on, turn out i dont remember i
turned off sound on Chrome in task menu of Kubuntu. Icon shows sound playing
and when clicking sound speaker icon in taskbar of chrome then it shows very
thin line that sound is turned mute off.
  === Suggestion ===
Since i dont remember i turned it off or dont see big difference or red icon
that sound is off then i dont know its off.
NEED different icon (size, more contrast, red color, round red X sign) so i
can see warning that sound is off. image attached how hard it is to see any
difference from speaker icon when turned off
  === Suggestion 2 ===
I just accidentally again clicked on it because it appears on all open
windows. Can it not be only one one window of chrome where it playing?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1930145] Re: IBus Panel Show Icon on system tray doesn't persist

2024-03-08 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore
This bug is very old, if it is still an issue please update the bug with
information from a supported release.

Title:
IBus Panel Show Icon on system tray doesn't persist

Status in ibus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in plasma-desktop package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After a reboot in Kubuntu 21.04 (and 20.10) the IBus Panel icon
appears in the system tray despite "Show icon on system tray" NOT
being checked. Right clicking on the IBus Panel icon, checking "Show
icon on system tray" and then unchecking again it causes the icon to
be correctly hidden. But the problem reappears after the next reboot.

Another user reporting what is almost certainly the same behavior:
  https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/j91t8f/ibus_panel_icon_in_system_tray/

And this is an _identical_ bug report from 2012, so maybe it's a regression
of some sort?
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=877135

Based om the trouble shooting requested at that time I get:

  $ gconftool-2 --get /desktop/ibus/panel/show_icon_on_systray
  No value set for `/desktop/ibus/panel/show_icon_on_systray'

Note that I am running KDE, in case that's the important detail.

The primary problem is that if you click on it accidentally and close
the panel, you lose all keyboard input.

Title:
autologin breaks keyboard and mouse in GDM3

Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrade from 19.10 to 20.04, mouse and keyboard are
unresponsive. Re-installing does not fix the problem. Problem is not
apparent in KDE or LightDM. Three workarounds have been found so far:

  1. Boot into recovery mode, then exit to normal boot via "resume"
  2. Disable autologin. Allows normal bootup via login screen
  3. Install alternative desktop manager such as KDE Plasma or LightDM.

  Source package is unknown

  Release: Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1

Expected behaviour: System boots directly into desktop, mouse and
  keyboard both work as normal

Actual behaviour: Mouse and keyboard are non-responsive unless
  autologin is disabled.

Expected behaviour: virtual console should appear with login prompt.
  Actual behaviour: nothing happens.

When a user is logged in, Ctrl+Alt+F3 switches to terminal tty3...
However, hitting first Ctrl+Alt+F1 and, subsequently, hitting
Ctrl+Alt+F3 does not show tty3, and remains at the graphical login

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I'm using a thinkpad as a workstation, with a dual-display configuration: the
laptop screen and a big external screen.
The screen is directly connected to the laptop hdmi port, because using it
through the thunderbolt port is hit-and-miss, but this is another story.

When I wake my system on after a night sleep, more often than not -
it's not systematic -, my primary screen - the bigger external Dell
monitor - is activated alone, and the laptop screen stays completely
  black.

I have to go to system settings -> Display to activate it again.

  thanks for your support

  /Bruno Hivert

Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

Status in kwin package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This is a well investigated bug by me.

Problem: a black screen freeze occurs by suspend-resume process
Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 19.10 default plasma, or the backported 5.17
Kernel version: default 5.3.10 or the mainline 5.4.0rc3
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: 19.* or the newest from git, the 18.0.1-1 works
well

This freeze can be reproduced only if opengl 2.0 or 3.1 compositor is
enabled in Plasma settings. Xrender is OK however I don't like screen
  tearing.

On Ubuntu 19.10 Gnome desktop (X based) this doesn't occur even if the
Gnome's compositor is enabled. (I don't know what is the default one
there but I haven't disabled it)

I think this is a Kwin / amdgpu driver related bug because of the
differentiation. These can be fixed even in Kwin/opengl compositor not
just in the amdgpu driver or in kernel.

One possible solution: disable opengl compositor by suspend and re-
enable it after login. Use fe.: Xrender before login / before the
  system restored from suspend.

For Ubuntu's maintainers: Couldn't be this problem solved by a
downstream solution? Maybe a proper script could be enough by resume
and by suspend. There are a lot of bugs like this reported in
freedesktop bugreport and the developers haven't got enough time for
  fix them fast enough.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-02-03 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore
Thank you so much for the information! I am going to go with putting
them in the respective application packaging. That apparmor.d project is
a nice starting point indeed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-02-02 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore
I have tested the above packages and created a profile for kontact
locally and kontact no longer crashes hooray. I am still sorting out
what I need to do here for the kde packages ( returning after a long
time gone ) Is there a package I need to add new profiles or is someone
else adding the new profiles? SO for my newbness.
