Title:
[nvidia] Display scaling results in a blank screen (power save state)

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-440 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Working on fully updated focal fossy

  Procedure to make bug happen:

  1. open gnome control center and select screen (skærme in danish)

  2. click the "fractional scaling" switch

  3. select 150% scaling and click the green button at top right

  4. Result is a blank screen and the monitor going into a power save
  state

A reboot doesn't help. The login screen appears, when I log in the screen
goes blank again and the monitor power save kicks in.

If I select the "unity" environment, the display does work.

If I do this on the command line "gsettings set org.gnome.mutter
experimental-features ['']", I can log in as usual and fractional
  scaling has been turned off.

mouse-over the destination window, and then release the tab in the
  newly focused window.

There is no equivalent behavior with Unity. Dragging tabs to its bar
  does nothing.

  -
  Desired resolution:

Users should be able to move tabs between browser windows irrespective
of window state (minimised, restored or maximised) by dragging and
dropping the via the Launcher app spread.

  Use case
  1. User opens two Chromium or Firefox windows, with two tabs open in each.
  2. User starts dragging a browser tab
  3. Unity slides out the Launcher with valid drop receptacles highlighted
  4. User drags the tab over a browser icon in the Launcher
  5. Unity displays a spread of the two browser windows
  6. User continues the drag, and drags and drops the tab into the other
browser window
  7. Unity shifts the tab to the other browser window. If this window is
minimised it is restored and brought into focus. If this window is maximised
or restored it is brought into focus.

  =
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on large
screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a small window
somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the cursor all the way up
to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why the global menu was used for
the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since
Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to
switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by
many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will

Most toolkits properly deal with right-to-left, properly inverting the

When doing ISO testing, I noticed it's not quite the case for unity
greeter and unity, here are some notes of the inconsistencies I
  noticed:

  = Unity =
  - Launcher is on the left, identical to a left-to-right system
  - Indicators are on the right, identical to a left-to-right system

I'm not sure what's the best as I'm not a right-to-left user myself,
but we should either have Unity also invert its UI, making it
consistent with what's done in the greeter's panel.

[This report previously also covered RTL in the greeter, which is
  tracked separately in bug 834386.]

  Use Case:

Dragging movie/audio files from nautilus to totem.

  Steps to Reproduce:

  1. open totem media player full screen
  2. open nautilus full screen
  3. browse to media files
  4. select some media files (e.g. a movie file) and move it to start a drag
and drop operation
  5. press Alt+Tab

  Observations:

  Nothing happens.

  Expected Results:

Alt+Tab should allow the user to switch tasks and preserve the drag
state, so the user can drag files from one application to another.

  Notes:

Drag and drop works if the applications are tiled to the left/right of
each other, or if they are windowed so it should work when they are
  full screen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 837145] Re: Memory leak in pango_layout_get_extents

2012-07-02 Thread Tim Penhey
** Description changed:

Impact: there is a memory leak when using pango_layout_get_extents

Development Fix: the bug has been fixed in quantal

Stable Fix: simple patch accepted upstream at
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678059

Regression Potential: could potentially cause other bugs

  Test Case:
- - TODO
+ - Run the following code in a terminal (feel free to check the result of the
GET first)
+ {{{
+ for size in 100 200 500; do
+ echo With size $size
+ GET https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=216360 | sed s/100/$size/
 pango_leak.c
+ gcc pango_leak.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs pangoft2` -o pango_leak
+ valgrind ./pango_leak 21 | grep ' lost' | cut -d -f 2-
+ done;
+ }}}

- ...
+ Observe that before the fix the possibly lost reported grows
+ significantly which different loop counts, and that after the fix it
+ does not.
+
+ -- End test case

Valgrind found a leak deep in the nested calls for
  'pango_layout_get_extents'.

It appears to be not freeing something.

4,224 (512 direct, 3,712 indirect) bytes in 1 blocks are definitely lost
1,904 (768 direct, 1,136 indirect) bytes in 1 blocks are definitely lost
1,904 (768 direct, 1,136 indirect) bytes in 1 blocks are definitely lost

This from an hour long valgrind run.

Add the option 'Launcher placement' to the Displays panel.
A drop-down list provides the following options:
  Display name 1
  Display name 2

  All displays

By default, the primary display will be selected, to display just a
single Launcher on the primary display.

A fallback solution is proposed where proprietary drivers report a single

Bug description:
  hi,

after reviewing the current beta release of oneiric, I found that
there are mostly great design improvements. Just the nautilus theme
looks quite weired. the sidebar looks like a cancer IN MY OPINION.
that is given because the sidebar comes with a different color schema
  in the Ambience theme.

The most important part is that the sidebar does feel like a part of
nautilus and not like a unthemed plugin

  My suggestions:
  1) Toolbar, Sidebar and Pane with the same color and/or gradiant
  2) ...or... The upper part of the sidebar could have the same color/gradiant
as the toolbar and so acting as it would be part of the toolbar (although
it's not)..

for suggestion one, I attached a possible tweak that I gimped. The
upper part of the sidebar continues the gradiant of the toolbar and
the rest of the sidebar continues uni-colored.

  ---

  Desired solution:

Update Nautilus theme to follow the attached tweak suggestion image
  (suggestion 1 above)

exhibit this behaviour)
  2) Shows up in launcher as application Background, with wallpaper icon.
  3) Click All Settings at top left of window.
  4) Click some other settings panel (such as Backup or Keyboard)
  5) The launcher item is still Background with a wallpaper icon, which no
longer has any relation to what's in the window.

  Desired solution:

  - Detect which panel is opened and adjust the Launcher icon
  accordingly.

Misleading placement of 'Launcher placement' and 'Sticky edges'

Status in Ayatana Design:
  Fix Committed
Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The placement of the options 'Launcher placement' and 'Sticky edges' is
misleading, as they are grouped with other *per-display* options such as
Resolution and Rotation.
As these options globally affect the entire display setup, they should be
separated from the per-display options.

The suggested solution is shown in the attached image
  'globalOptionsPlacement.png'

Following the 'Rotation' drop-down list there is a vertical gap of 12px.
  There then follows a 2px wide rule, #B8B8B8 RGB(184, 184, 184) for the top
colour and #FCFCFC RGB(252, 252, 252) for the bottom colour. If there is
already a separator widget which provides this type of appearance, it can be
used instead.
Another vertical gap of 12px follows the rule, followed by the 'Launcher
placement' drop-down list.

Please note: In the attached image, the labels shown are incorrect.

  Rational:

SUPER triggers the launcher, and the actions listed above do not
require launcher interactions. As a result, using SUPER on it's own
for these interactions has resulted in false positives where the
launcher is revealed even though it provides no benefit for these

Reduce the spread delay for all items other than the initial item the
select lands on after alt-tab opens. After the user moves the select
off it's opening position, spread delay should be shortened. This
change is because a longer spread delay is only required for the
initial item to allow the user time to scan the items in alt-tab
without being disrupted. The spread delay on all other item can be
shorter, which should give a more responsive feel.

  --
  Note from User Testing:

In user testing, participants did not find the spread because they
moved between applications too quickly. When I pointed out the spread
to them, they commented that the delay was too long. Power users said
that it would be faster for them to find what they were looking for
  without the spread.

Title:
[FFe, UIFe] Dash - When the Dash is open and there is a maximised app
in the background, the top bar background should not disappear

Status in Ayatana Design:
  Fix Released
Status in Unity:
  Fix Released
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When the Dash is open and there is a maximised app in the background,
the top bar background should not disappear.

  To reproduce:
  1. Open any window and make it maximised.
  2. Open the Dash

What you currently see that is incorrect:
  - The background of the top bar disappears showing the background wallpaper
in the position where the top bar was.

  What you should see:
  - The background of the top bar (just the dark bar without any emblems or app
title, effectively just the top bar texture) should remain in place, and you
should *NOT* be able to see the background wallpaper. For clarity, this change
does not change the dash in any way, we are only changing the background
*behind* the dash.

  Desired solution:
  - *ONLY* in the case where there is a maximised window, the top bar
background should be displayed when the Dash is open.
  - When there is no maximised window the top bar background should not be
displayed (as currently happens)
  - The attached images ambiance_topbar.png and radiance_topbar.png show
*exactly* the effect we are trying to achieve

only the icons on the monitor with the dash/hud visible are re-
  saturated.

Bug description:
Typing a key combination fast enough brings up the HUD.

The problem is especially evident in emacs, where M-x is a very fast
key combination to type, and will invariably bring up the HUD. But
even outsideof emacs, typing Alt-f or Alt-b on the shell will often
  bring up the HUD too.

gdu_pool_new() is the function that is crashing. This is called from
unity but isn't part of unity.

I believe it to be part of gnome disk utility.

  - revealing the launcher by putting mouse on the edge and pushing seems very
hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

  Related issue:
on multimonitor setup, going from one monitor to the edge suffer from the
same issue (you have to push the mouse a lot, more than it felt naturally
needed). Especially when you drag a window using the trackpad.
Also, when you put your mouse on the central point slowly to go to monitor 2,
you get stuck even if you believe that the mouse is already on the monitor 2
(because there is one pixel left on monitor 1 and the whole cursor is drawn on
monitor 2)

This is on a dell Latitute XT2, with default mouse velocity option.

  2. Run gedit
  3. Gedit window should appear on screen 2.
  4. Maximise gdit window.
  5. Close gedit window.

If you unmimimise the gedit window on screen 1, it jumps back to

  Note:
Metacity is patched to make almost-fullscreen application windows change to

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 11.10

  1. Type Ctrl+Alt+Del.

What happens: In Unity, a mutant version of the Log Out dialog
  appears.

What should happen: The nearest equivalent to the Windows Task Manager
appears. Currently, that is the Processes tab of System Monitor.

(Implementing this probably would invalidate bug 485740.)

Bug description:
This is something which used to happen regularly though not always (I
switched to using fallback mode for a while because of it).
Basically, drop-down menus in Firefox such as RSS feeds (or in Natty
without the global menu the normal application menus were affected
too) are simply not shown when clicked on. Context menus also fail to
appear. This often disappeared for no apparent reason after I had
used Firefox for a while. I haven't seen it for a while, but it has
just re-appeared, possibly because I started Unity as unity
--replace since I am currently testing an application's behaviour
  with different window managers.

I'm sorry if this information is a bit threadbare. Please let me know
if I can provide any additional helpful information.

  Requested changes:

  - Rename the title Theme at the bottom of the dialogue to Desktop
  appearance

  - Add a option underneath the theme selector that says Launcher
visibility followed by drop down selector with two options: always
visible and when cursor touches left edge of screen. The default
option is when cursor touches left edge of the screen

Many of Unity's bindings use Super, including 'Show Desktop' which
used to use Ctrl-Alt-D. Lock screen however, has remained with Ctrl-
Alt-L. Super-L should be added to (not replace) the existing
  keybinding by default.

This would also be familiar for users switching from a well-known OS.

  ---
  Desired solution:
  - Add Super-L keyboard shortcut to lock screen
  - Leave the existing Ctrl-Alt-L keyboard shortcut in place as an alternative
