[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841387] Re: GDM hangs on boot with 5.3rc5 when using wayland

2019-08-25 Thread Troels Liebe Bentsen
This bug can be closed, one could argue that the kernel could handle
this a bit prettier as the -1 options is setting the firmware loading to
auto so a fallback to not loading the firmware would be ok.

Bug description:
Been testing newer kernels and everything works(5.2.9 works) until

When booting with 5.3rc5 GDM hangs on launch showing a blank screen, booting

I know this is not supported but there are some nice thermal fixes in
5.3 for the Dell XPS 9380 and 9370 that would be nice to have.

  How do i debug this?

2019-08-25 Thread Troels Liebe Bentsen
Found out it's unrelated to Wayland or GDM, I was using the
"i915.enable_guc=-1" to load the Intel power management firmware, this
causes the DRM initialization to fail if the needed version is missing
and the firmware was updated in 5.3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1796661] Re: Firefox can't download files to an fscrypt protected, unlocked folder

2019-01-21 Thread Troels Liebe Bentsen
The issue is because firefox does a rename from the /tmp folder to the
encrypted home folder, right now fscrypt returns EPERM instead of EXDEV
that would be normal when the operation can not complete because of
crossing a mount point or in this case unencrypted to an encrypted
folder.

The upstream firefox bug is here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1521041

But one could argue that the kernel interface is broken and it should
return EXDEV as tools like mv also breaks, there are some patches in the
works but I don't know how far they are, maybe ubuntu could carry them
until they go upstream:

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9943001/

Title:
Firefox can't download files to an fscrypt protected, unlocked folder

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
My Downloads folder is encrypted by fscrypt. I can save and read files
in there. However, for Firefox - all downloads fail and it says only
"download failed" and offers a button to retry which fails again.
After a failed attempt, a file is created with a proper file name but
  no content (0 bytes).

When I changed the download dir to a different non-fscrypted folder,
everything works properly and files do get properly saved.

I switched to Chromium and Chromium has no problems downloading files
into any dirs, regardless encrypted or not.

Bug description:
I got a new Dell XPS 9370 and upgraded it to 17.10, the included
kernel(4.13.0-38-generic) seems to be working except for some short
temporary hangs(1-3 secs) ones in a while under wayland.

Therefore I tried upgrading the kernel to a newer version to see if it
  fixed the issue:

  4.15.0-13-generic (from 18.04)
4.16.1-041601-generic (from mainline), bug report on this kernel.

For both kernels gdm will startup without issue and then after 5-10
seconds the UI will hang and keyboard/mouse will become unresponsive.

I installed an OpenSSH server and grabbed this bug report from there.

Title:
Dell XPS 9370: Gnome quickly hangs and becomes unresponsive

Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.10
  Package: gdm3 3.26.1-3ubuntu3
  Uname: Linux 4.16.1-041601-generic x86_64
  ApportVersion: 2.20.7-0ubuntu3.7
  Architecture: amd64
  Date: Tue Apr 10 19:12:21 2018
  ExecutablePath: /usr/sbin/gdm3
InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-01-27 (73 days ago)
  InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 17.10 "Artful Aardvark" - Release amd64 (20180105.1)
  SourcePackage: gdm3
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

I applied the fix, though it was line 20 not 23 that had to be commented
out for "problem_types" to be removed.

I also uploaded the files that were already in the crash directory, but
I don't get any new ones after for the last crash.
