Title:
It's difficult to save a Nautilus search

Status in Nautilus:
  New
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Currently, the only way there is to save a file search in Nautilus is
to click on the Save Search As menu item under the File menu. This
isn't very obvious and having this option near the Empty Wastebasket
  menu item doesn't help.

Since the search window already has a Reload button, would it be
possible to add a Save As button below it? This would be more
  intuitive and easier to find.

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
While logged to a ssh server using Nautilus and you double-click to
open a directory that the current user doesn't have execute
permissions, nautilus opens the directory and shows an empty directory
instead of showing an error message. There's no way to tell if the
directory is actually empty or if the user doesn't have the necessary
  permissions.

  Steps to reproduce:
1) Log in to the remote server using ssh in a terminal
  $ ssh username@server
1) Create a directory
  $ mkdir test
2) Create a file inside that directory
  $ cd test
  $ touch file
3) Revoke the execute permission on that directory
  $ cd ..
  $ chmod -x test
4) Open the ssh server using Nautilus
  File - Connect to Server...
5) Open that directory using Nautilus

  What I expected:
Nautilus should show some kind of visual clue that the user doesn't have
the necessary permissions to open that directory.

  What happened instead:
Nautilus didn't gave a warning or error message and showed me an empty
directory which is misleading.

If you have a symlink to a disk that is not auto-mounted, then
clicking on it gives an error message like The Link My Pictures is
Broken. Move it to the Rubbish Bin? This link cannot be used, because
  its target /media/Acer/Users/Steven/Pictures/My Pictures doesn't
  exist.

For a beginner this message is startling, and suggesting that it
should be deleted worrying, and not particularly helpful.

The best option from a usability point of view would be to mount the
disk, but I bet that's hard to do.

Second best, do not offer to delete it, and say something along the
lines of The file or directory that My Pictures links to
  (/media/Acer/Users/Steven/Pictures/My Pictures) is not currently
available. You should check that the disk is mounted.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 975510] Re: Gedit initiates write by dconf-service when using Replace... dialog

2012-04-07 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky
GEdit stores recent searches and replaces in dconf to have a history of
searches/replacements, so this is a feature not a bug.
What is the expected behavior in your case?

** Changed in: gedit (Ubuntu)

Title:
Gedit initiates write by dconf-service when using Replace... dialog

Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:

When Search for: field in Replace... dialog contains more than 3 symbols
every press on Find, Replace or Replace all buttons initiates write by
dconf-service.

  Steps to reproduce:
  a) I needed to change gedit's max-recents setting.
  b) since there's no option for it in the gedit's Preferences dialog, I
installed dconf-tools (0.10.0-0ubuntu1)

  1) open any file
  2) open Replace dialog
  3) type into Search for: any text (should be over 3 symbols long)
  4) press Find, Replace or Replace all
Every press on these buttons results in write by dconf-service (with audible
hdd sound).

When using /proc/sys/vm/block_dump it looks like this:
  #sda6 is a /home partition
#new entry in Search for: field
kernel: [11053.994218] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194707 (user) on
sda6
kernel: [11053.994225] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194707 (user) on
sda6
  kernel: [11055.974400] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194738
(user.HFP9BW) on sda6
  kernel: [11055.974413] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194738
(user.HFP9BW) on sda6
  kernel: [11055.974509] dconf-service(1656): WRITE block 134749472 on sda6 (16
sectors)
#same entry in Search for: field
  kernel: [11062.859499] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194737
(user.2QXUBW) on sda6
  kernel: [11062.859514] dconf-service(1656): dirtied inode 4194737

  kernel: [11062.859614] dconf-service(1656): WRITE block 134749488 on sda6 (16
sectors)
  ...

Indeed dconf contains list of used search and replace strings for
Gedit but writes occur on EVERY press of Find, Replace or Replace
  all. No duplicates added.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 969548] Re: Nautilus crashes by opening two or mode tabs

2012-04-02 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

bookmarks entry) _during this period of reading directory 2_ (only
then!) nautilus simply disappears, together with _all_ other nautilus
instances running on this machine. And all desktop icons disappear
likewise - all in the same moment.

Otherwise: Opening a third tab somewhat later (after all previor

Bug description:
  Version 11.10

The performance of accounts-daemon is unacceptable with large password and/or
group files. We have appoximately 4 users in the passwords file and 16000
lines in the group file. Having looked at the source, it appears to me the
problem is that for each user is pulls from the password database (via
getpwXXX) its then calls getgroups to return the users list of groups.

Getgroups must make a complete pass through the group file to determine the
groups for the user. When initializing this results in
reading the groups file 4 times.

I think a better solution is to build a inverted group file map then first
time getgroups is called by reading the entire group database and building a
data structure indexed by username where a users group list can by found in a
single lookup.
Of couse, an even better solution would be for getgroups to do that itself,
but that would require much larger code changes.

I tried installed nscd to see if this would make a difference but no
  dice.

At the moment, 11.10 is unusable for us because of this problem.

Hope this is all the info you need.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 965935] Re: Document Viewer 2.32.0 don't print page from pdf

2012-03-27 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky
What is your standard paper size? A4 or Letter? Please edit
/etc/papersize if it contains the wrong paper size name. Send the test
print job with the correct paper size setting. Note that Firefox and
Evince to not remember the paper size setting. You also have to select
Page Setup ... in the file menu to get access to the paper size.

Do a full system update to capture the newest bug fixes, especially a
paper size issue with the CUPS filters.

After that please try again. If the problem persists, please attach the
error_log again (proceed as described in the error_log section of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 956210] Re: gnome-system-log sometimes crashes on opening a log file

2012-03-25 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

on annother one (also network), the file gets copied of moved there.

  4) I open a nautilus window. It starts up with home folder selected. I
click on a file in the home folder and dragdrop it onto one of my
bookmarked folders. I can see the Icon floating back to its position
where I started to drag it. the Bookmarks section does not accept
  dragdrop.

the Computer section supports it, though. Also, this was working in

It seems that the mirror you are using (mirror.noreply.org) is down.
Could you please try using another mirror?

Also Intrepid Ibex has reached EOL on April 30, 2010 so I'd recommend
you upgrading to any supported release. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 962701] Re: samsung k3jqb(mtp) sync library crashes

2012-03-23 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky

Sayantan, this contains links to upstream bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48525, which covers both
'Group By' and autorarrangement.
This bug also is an ehnancement, so there is no point in creating
duplicates. A better solution would be finding someone interested in
implementing this.

Bug description:
I would request the developers over at Canonical to add a patch to allow

It becomes easier to find files in groups when there are thousands of files

Dolphin file manager has this option . Please see the links below for the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 961300] Re: This is my system bug report may be helpful for developers.

2012-03-21 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 961265] Re: Help, ubuntu 11.04 stps running aft abaot 6o seconds

2012-03-21 Thread Vadim Rutkovsky
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Should autodetect filename character encoding in zip files

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: file-roller

Many compressed file such as zip don't specify filename encoding. But
file-roller read every file as UTF-8, so it sometimes makes encoding
  problem.

I think may be, you could think that it's not a big problem or it's
not a bug or we don't need those feature. If you deal with only
English it's not a problem at all. But it's a big problem for East
Asian people such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Because zip file is
still popular. And many people compress zip file in Windows, and share
the zip files. Windows don't use UTF-8.

Many CJK people want to uncompress these zip files. There are some way
to solve this problem (by another software). But all are too complex
to Ubuntu newbies. I wish file-roller support encoding select
  function.
