[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1792085] Re: MTP not working/very slow on Bionic

2019-09-07 Thread Valentin Crone
It's not the first bug who is not fixed in one or more years, the
problem is, when you invite new users to discover ubuntu, at a time,
they will need to connect their phone on their computer, and they will
say: This doesn't work, and the fix (via mtpfs-go) is complicated for
basic users.

Today from the boot to the basic usage, you have a lot of problems never
fixed or ignored when reported that make ubuntu or linux in general not
user friendly, and even if people with some knowledge in IT always find
after some hours a way to use their favorite OS on their computer, the
lambda user, who will be really happy to use ubuntu, is in fact not able
to install it, or use it on some specific points like this, even if they
follow a tutorial. (Boot, uefi, wifi, graphics, mtp, bugs in gui,
missing basic feature or removed, sound, video, etc)

For information, with go-mtpfs, you can set an higher timeout value, then the
mtp is usable, the bug is just a timeout issuenot fixed in 1 year

  Hi, unfortunately (for me) MTP android devices no more work on Ubuntu
  18.04.

  I have used MTP on 16.04 without problems, but on 18.04 it does not
  work. When I connect my Android devices (Samsung A5 and Samsung J3)
  and I try to list directories with many files (e.g. /DCIM/Camera) the
  window hangs until I disconnect the device. Same issue if I try to
  post the command "ls /var/run/1000/gvfs/".

  I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 on two different machines - an older HP
  laptop and a recent DELL laptop - and the issue is present on the all
  of them.

  I suspect a defect on the "libmtp". I tried many alternative solutions
  suggested by the net (e.g. jmtpfs and so on) but anyone worked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1797734] Re: slow calculator startup

2019-06-11 Thread Valentin Crone
Hello,
Try to remove the snap package:

snap remove gnome-calculator

And install the deb package:

apt-get install gnome-calculator

I have experimented this on Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04 and it seem to be really
faster.
I have experienced many speed problems with snap apps. And some was really
laggy.

For example, with discord on snap, on one of my laptop: crashes, and mic
problems.
For the other laptop: Really laggy, 5 to 10s between the time I type something,
and the time it appear on the screen, on a laptop with 2 SSD.
I have the time to start firefox 3 times on the same period, and discord in
firefox doesn't present any of theses problems.

After this, I remove the snap version, and install the official deb
version (from the discord website), and no problems. Fluid and not full
of bugs.

Same problem for Atom (atom.io), buggy and laggy with snap.
I don't understand why snap is slow like this for certain apps, and I don't
understand exactly how snap works, but I suspect him to be the cause of many
slow apps on recent versions of Ubuntu.

On my laptop, for gnome-calculator, the time to open:
- Snap: 2 to 10s
- Deb: 0.1 to 1s

I can't say it's definitely snap, but I suppose you can look at this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1825953] Re: Alt+Tab works with a wrong behaviour

2019-05-02 Thread Valentin Crone
Hello,
I have reported this to the gitlab, but I feel that the developers are not very
open minded to user's suggestions...

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/1233

"It's not a bug, you disagree with the behaviour" → Closed.

Very coolwhen will be the time where Linux UI will take the users
suggestions to make better UI in place to force users to change many
habits on each new version?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1825953] [NEW] Alt+Tab works with a wrong behaviour

2019-04-23 Thread Valentin Crone
Public bug reported:

Hello,
On GNOME Shell 3.32.0, there is a very confusing behaviour with the "alt-tab"
shortcut.

Example, I have this list of app (windows):

[w1][w2][w3][w4][w5][w6]

On alt+tab, now I get this:

[w2][w1][w3][w4][w5][w6]

No problem for the moment.
But if I use Super + H to hide the first Window (here, w2).

The list doesn't take the expected behaviour:
[w1][w2][w3][w4][w5][w6] (like on Unity, Windows 10, OSX, or others...)

But something like this:

[w1][w3].[w4].[w5].[w6].

[w2] go somewhere on a "." between [w3] and [w6], or after [w6].

This if very frustrating for example when you want to hide a half screen
window who is in front of another, and then want to go-back to the half
screen window.

For example, Unity have a correct behaviour with this.

Thank you

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1825340] [NEW] Wrong date on events

2019-04-18 Thread Valentin Crone
Public bug reported:

Hello,
On gnome-calendar (3.32.0), Ubuntu 19.04.

1 - Create or edit an event.
2 - Check the "Whole day" option. (French: "Toute la journée")

The event will start and end 1 day before the selected begin and the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1414714] Re: Wacom tablet not detected in Unity Control Center

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS.

With the kernel 3.13, the tablets are detected properly, but with the 4.4
update, no tablets are detected.
I uses scripts with xsetwacom to use my tablet without this, but it's
problematic for beginner users...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1779111] [NEW] High CPU usage, framerate drop after adding or removing monitors

2018-06-28 Thread Valentin Crone
Public bug reported:

Hello,
On Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS up to date (28/06/2018, DD/MM/), after connecting or
removing a monitor (moving, etc...) with a Nvidia GPU, unity-control-center
takes high CPU and makes Xorg taking 100% of the CPU.

This produces lags, framerate drop, etc... even with office apps (Firefox,
LibreOffice, etc...).
It makes Steam and Discord very slow to start, and very laggy.
And Steam games run with 10 - 15fps were they run with 60fps or more without
this bug.

Typing:
```killall -9 unity-control-center```
fix immediately the problem, but it's not good for users who don't know
the reason and think it's due to a bad performance from Ubuntu
Note: I use Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS from about 4 years now, and I experience this
bug only since 3 - 6months, on 5 different computers who are all up to date.
(Kernel 4.4+, and all others updates)
Thank you !
PS: I don't know if it affects only computers with nvidia GPUs, but in
my case I have the problem on all my computers...and they have all
nvidia GPUs. Models used: GTX 770, GTX 1050, laptop and desktop, with
and without hybrid graphics (intel).
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1665919] [NEW] Asus Xonar DGX - snd_oxygen - Linux 4.4
2017-02-18 Thread Valentin Crone
Public bug reported:
Hello,
On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, the update manager was just upgraded my kernel from
3.13.0-87 to 4.4.0-62, and now my sound card is unusable. (Driver regression?)
03:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788
[Oxygen HD Audio]
who uses snd_oxygen (module)
Before the update: All speakers works perfectly.
After the update:
Right speaker -> Works
Left speaker -> Doesn't work, and make noise
Center/Rear left and right/Subwoofer -> Doesn't work at all.
Please fix this if you want to make the update usable.
The sound card works perfectly with Linux 3.13 and even with Windows 7.
So now I'll remove this update.
Thank you,
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1551385] Re: No sound on ASUS Xonar DGX Soundcard (16.04)
2016-05-17 Thread Valentin Crone
The problem of this "solution" is that is temporary, because on each
boot you need to set manually the output on alsamixer (because
pulseaudio can't change it)
The driver developer Clemens Ladisch said me that it's because of a
difference between the name of the output purposed by the driver and the
name that pulseaudio search.
The driver said "Multichannel", but PulseAudio search about "Speakers", so he
didn't found the right output.
This bug is because the output was renamed in the driver.
A simple name update in pulseaudio will fix the problem normally.
And for the workarround, thanks Clemens Ladisch :)
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1551385] Re: No sound on ASUS Xonar DGX Soundcard (16.04)
"2014-01-29 Change the order of elements in the output select control.
This will reduce the number of relay switches. Change 'put' function to
call the oxygen_update_dac_routing() function. Otherwise multichannel
playback does not work. Also there is a new function to apply settings,
this prevents from duplicating the code. Signed-off-by: Roman Volkov
 Signed-off-by: Clemens Ladisch "
This is the cause of the problem, it seem that PulseAudio not recognize the
Speaker output.
On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS PulseAudio set the output on "Speakers"
But on Ubuntu 14.10 + the output "Speakers" doesn't exist.
In alsamixer:
Ubuntu 14.04: Speakers, Headphone, Headphone FP
Ubuntu 14.10 → 16.04: Stereo Headphone, Stereo Headphone FP, Multichannel
If I manually set "Multichannel" in alsamixer, I can play sound, but PulseAudio
show only "Analog headphone" (in Pavucontrol), so the output persist on "Stereo
Headphone FP" and no sound is played on the speakers. (And the output
Multichannel is not set by default)
Ok, now I have tested with Ubuntu 14.10: Pulseaudio 4.0, Linux 3.16,
same problem, so because the PulseAudio version is the same between
Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10 it seem it's a bug in the kernel module
snd-oxygen :(
It's a regression from Linux 3.13 to Linux 3.16 → 4.4
Linux 4.4 and PulseAudio 8.0, I can't play any sound on my ASUS Xonar DGX.
Tested with the app to test speakers, Firefox, VLC, and checked with
pavucontrol, the progress bar indicate that a sound is played on the card, but
no sound on the speakers.
  I report this bug because it works on the same version with the
  integrated card of my motherboard. (ASUS H87-PLUS)
  On Ubuntu 14.04 (PulseAudio 4.0), the sound work correctly (with all
  defaults params)
  The speakers connected are the Logitech Z9600 (by 3 jacks), and I
  precise that they are correctly plugged in, etc..., it works when I
  connect it to the integrated sound card of my motherboard (and if I
  use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS)
  I don't know if it's a normal development bug, but in doubt I report it.
  Thank you,
  Valentin Crône
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1551385] Re: No sound on ASUS Xonar DGX Soundcard (16.04)
2016-02-29 Thread Valentin Crone
On Ubuntu 15.10, the bug is present with Linux 4.2.0-16 and PulseAudio 6.0
(tested now, with a fresh iso)
I discover this now, because I daily use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (because it's a LTS
version), and now I see that because I will upgrade to 16.04 LTS when the final
version will be available.
2015-09-19 Thread Valentin Crone
I have personnaly disabled the execution of hud-service (chmod 000)
because my computer use always 6GB of ram including 3GB by hud-service.
And the last time hud service was running it take 18.7GB of RAM for 16GB
available.
Please fix this bug, on computer with only 4GB of ram it's a huge problem...
And sometimes it takes 100% of one I5 core, it provide lag and freezes...
Bug description:
  I got an ASUS Xonar U3 USB sound card for my Thinkpad T420 for my
  birthday this year and tried to use it on Ubuntu 12.10. Unfortunately,
  its sound output is either bearably noticeable or - if I increase the
  volume by even the slightest notch with the audio indicator -
  EXTREMELY loud (and, because I use earphones, pretty painfully so).
  I did some experiments with alsamixer, and it seems as if the complete
  volume range that I would expect to be stretched over the complete
  slider is compressed in the PCM levels between 1 and ~7. This means
  the only way I can sanefully use the USB sound card right now is by
  turning the volume in each application very, very low so that I have
  some amount of precision with the global volume slider (which I can
  control with function keys), but every time I forget this somewhere,
  it's a pretty painful surprise, so I hope this can be fixed.
  slider is compressed in the PCM levels between 1 and ~7. This means
  the only way I can sanefully use the USB sound card right now is by
  turning the volume in each application very, very low so that I have
  some amount of precision with the global volume slider (which I can
  control with function keys), but every time I forget this somewhere,
  it's a pretty painful surprise, so I hope this can be fixed.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 209746] Re: File permissions are incorrect during file copy
2015-06-11 Thread Valentin Crone
The cp command use umask permission by default, it seem logic that nautilus do
the same thing. cp don't preserve chmod and chown by default.
This fake bug can be resolved by adding a new feature that purpose to preserve
permissions, or by choosing new permissions on a Window before copy.
Example by adding a Advanced paste option in the menu, under the normal
Paste option.
Advanced paste can be a Window that purpose to preserve or not permissions,
or/and define new permission for files and for folders copied.
I think it's the best way to solve this problem...
Title:
  File permissions are incorrect during file copy
Status in Nautilus:
  New
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus
  From http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=458397
  reported by Roberto Zunino:
  When copying files, files are created with the default umask permissions
  instead of using the permissions of the file being copied. Permissions are
then
  fixed after the copy has been completed. This however leaves a window of
  vulnerability.
  Real world example: I just copyed my old home (perms=700) to a new disk. This
  took quite a long time, during which my home had permissions 775.
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Create a folder and put some large files inside
  2. chmod 700 folder
  3. Nautilus-copy it somewhere else
  Actual results:
  while copying, ls -d folder_copy shows 775 perms, and other users can go in
and
  read inside the folders
  Expected results:
  folder_copy should be created with 700 perms
  Does this happen every time?
  yes
  Other information:
  The Right Thing would be to pass the correct permissions to open()/mkdir()
etc.
  Failing that, a good enough easier fix would be to set umask to 700old_umask
  for the copying stuff.
  -[ End of bug report by Roberto Zunino
  ]---
  I can reproduce this bug now with nautilus version 1:2.20.0-0ubuntu7.1
  under Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy). I tried to copy a single regular file with
  the permissions set to 600, so the problem is not limited to copying
  directories.
  I'm marking this as a security vulnerability because under appropriate
  circumstances it can allow local users to read other's files
  effectively bypassing the permissions set by the owner. It is true
  that many users won't be affected by this but that's not a valid
  reason to ignore the problem.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1238346] Re: on bootup wrong keyboard layout is recognized
2015-06-09 Thread Valentin Crone
I'm affected too on Ubuntu 14.04, in fact the keyboard is correctly
configured on Azerty (fr) on lightdm, but it switch to Qwerty (en)
when the desktop (Unity) starts. I have only the Fr as possible input
mapping in the config panel. I must select the Fr icon in the top bar
and click on French again to have the correct mapping for the
keyboard.
This type of bug, like sometimes bug with control panel (incomplete, or
bugged), or unable to do something without searching a command line on the web
to solve a innexistant function in GUI, or a bug, is typicaly what it's a
problem with beginner, or person who search to have a easy computer with
Ubuntu, and they ran away.
So, this type of bug or lack must be considered as important bugs for a general
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1393226] [NEW] Nautilus take huge quantity of RAM with thumbnails
2014-11-16 Thread Valentin Crone
Public bug reported:
Hello,
When you open a folder containing many pictures/images, nautilus take huge
quantity of RAM because it open all thumbnails in same time.
On my laptop, nautilus have take more RAM than my computer have (4GB) for o
folder containing 2000 - 4000 images/pictures.
Just for testing, I have linked many images on the same folder (28000), and try
to open it with nautilus.
Nautilus take 5GB of RAM per windows/tab in the folder. (So nautilus take 8GB
of ram just for that), and the time used just to display icons (without
thumbnail) is very long.
To compare: Windows Explorer (on Windows 7) is very faster than nautilus to
open that, and don't take this huge RAM quantity !
Other test: Open the System32 folder on Windows with the explorer, and the
System32 folder on Linux with nautilus:
On Windows, it's fast (5 - 10s to open max), with nautilus, it takes 40 - 120s
to open it. (and just to open)
It can be a good thing to optimise the time to open folder when it contain many
sub-folders or files, try to open /bin, /usr/bin, or /usr/share (or
equivalent), if you're not on a SSD it's take 2 - 3min
And for thumbnails: It can be a good think to load the thumbnail when it's
displayed, and unload when it's not displayed.
It you have 100 files in the folder, with many pictures, You have 50 pictures
displayed in same time, the 50 others can be savec in thumbnail cache, but
nautilus must not open it.
For 5000 pictures, you have already 50 pictures displayed at same time,
but, if nautilus load the 4950 others, the RAM explode.
Please, add this functionnality to make nautilus thin and faster. Just,
after opening 2 windows on my folder (with 28000 small pictures), the
computer use 12.4GB of RAM (1.8GB before the test), you understand the
problem?
This bug, affect all versions of Ubuntu.
Thank you :)
used to open the file is long, because eog make a list, or something like that
of all files in the folder.
  For a small number of picture in the folder it's fast, but if you have many
pictures in the folder, eog can take 1 or 2min to open, it's a problem. And my
Ubuntu is installed on a SSD, so it's faster than a normal disk.
  And, if eog use 9MB of RAM for you picture, if your folder contain
  1000, or more picture, eog will use more than 50 - 100MB of RAM.
  Can you fix this bug?
  Thank you :)
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1241972] Re: Drag and drop from Dash to Desktop doesn't work
2014-06-07 Thread Valentin Crone
For the moment the only solution we had to make a shortcut is:
1 - open nautilus (File browser)
2 - Go to: /usr/share/applications/
This folder containt all shortcuts of the menu.
Copy what you would, and paste where you would.
My attachment is a screen of a shortcut I have put on the desktop with
this method.
But, it's true that is a big fail for Ubuntu
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1325752] Re: All apps become mute when certain apps are opened.
2014-06-03 Thread Valentin Crone
My config of VLC:
(But, I precise, it's not a problem of VLC because all applications become mute
if Musescore is opened)
Other problem: On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I can play sheets in musescore, on Ubuntu
14.04 LTS, Musescore will not read notes.
I suppose it's a problem between Musescore and it's configuration for the sound
server. (Or a bug)
Verify that the config is correct, but with the config by default, or with this
config, I problem persist.
Thank you :)
2014-06-03 Thread Valentin Crone
Hello,
I use all defaults settings.
And I have just installed Musescore and have this bug immediately.
When I quit musescore, I have like a lag and the sound of others apps I
here again.
On my screenshot, the music is playing in VLC.
I have opened pavucontrol, I see the volume of VLC move with the music.
But,  when I open musescore, the volume is in pavucontrol is freezed,
and I ear no sound of all others apps (same for notification sounds of
Ubuntu)
When I quit musescore, the sound lag 1s and it can be ear again for all apps,
the volume in pavucontrol move a with the music again.
I can test with others computer to test, but on the same computer I have
try with my 2 sound cards and same if VLC use one card, and Musescore
the other card, the problem persist.
  Hello,
  I have a problem with PulseAudio on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. (This problem is not
present for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS)
  If you start a music, for example with VLC, a mp4 or a flac (or all
  others files), or a video on Youtube with the Adobe flash player, or all
  program who use PulseAudio.
  If you start a program like Musescore or Mixxx, all others programs
  become mute. It's a bug, because the volume indicate the program have a
  volume of 100% but no sound.
  If you exit Musescore or Mixxx, you can ear all others programs again.
  (Instantly)
  On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS the bugs is produced each time.
  If you use pavucontrol, you can see the volume of VLC or others apps freezed
when Musescore is opened.
  I haven't tested Mixxx on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS so I can't compare, but for
  Musescore it's certain that the problem had appear on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
  (I have installed all updates, and I use only apps on the official
  repository of Ubuntu)
Bug description:
  Since the update to Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, ShockWave Flash files are not
open in a web browser anymore. Indeed, when I clicking on it or when I use the
open a download dialogue box instead of opening the file. The only way to
launch the animation is to include it in a HTML file using an EMBED element.
  I actually have flasplugin-installer 11.2.202.291ubuntu0.13.04.1 installed on
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 871385] Re: Timeout while waiting for mount to appear when mounting NFS
2013-05-05 Thread Valentin Crone
I have the same bug on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with nautilus 3.4.2.
--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871385
Title:
  Timeout while waiting for mount to appear when mounting NFS
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  I've got a couple NFS mounts in my /etc/fstab, set up to be user-
  mountable.  These mounts show up as network mountpoints in Nautilus's
  computer:// location, which I can click on to mount.  When I do click
  on them, nautilus successfully mounts the mountpoint -- it appears as
  a new harddisk in the same computer:// view (right next to the
  original icon I clicked).  However, Nautilus then doesn't switch my
  view to that location, and after a few seconds pops up a message,
  Unable to mount location: Timeout waiting for mount to appear.
  After all this, I can manually click on the newly created icon and
  browse the drive.
  Further, double-clicking on the original icon while the mount is
  already there causes nautilus to pop up a message, mount.nfs:
  location is busy or already mounted.  What I expect to happen is
  that this takes me to the view of the root of the mount.
  Optimally, there shouldn't be two icons either.
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 378861] Re: access errors when using tabs
2012-08-05 Thread Valentin Crone
(I'm french, sorry for eventual errors of English)
This bug affect my on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS amd 64 with nautilus 3.4.2.
When I use a FAT32 or NTFS partition in a tab, my folders are created in
other tab.
I would copy my Music on my Android Phone (SD), I select the files and I
can't click to Copy because nautilus consider I would to copy the
empty folder in other tab. (he consider no files selected in the empty
folder)
I have this bug for 2 - 3 months approximately, when I can select my
files for a copy they are moved or copied in the wrong tab !
The bug is random, to reproduce it, it's easy when you use Ubuntu (you
have frequetly this problem with FAT32 paritition), but you can try
several time to constat the bug.
Try with a SD Card or USB Key in FAT32 and you HDD in ext4 for example, open 3
or 4 tab and move form one to another.
Try to Open a file in a tab, an move this to n other tab.
If you can't see the bug, try again, I have the bug every time I use a FAT32
partition.
For a NTFS partition I don't know if the bug is present... I have not found the
bug with NTFS personnaly, only with FAT16/32, in only a Linux partition (ext4)
Nautilus don't have this bug.
Thanks you.
→ I have tested (when I write this message) to clic to proprities
(contextual menu) in the ext4 folder affected with the bug, I think
nautilus give the detail of the FAT32  folder (by logic) and not,
Nautilus crash, it's a chance because apport have been started and I
have send the bug report.
Title:
  access errors when using tabs
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus
  I wanted to import my files from a external drive to my internal ntfs drive,
where i store all my non-os-data.
  So i opened the ntfs disk in the first tab and the external disk (ntfs, too)
in the second one.
  Now, if i right click in the window (first tab) and choose to make a new
directory, file or whatever, it is written to the folder on my external drive,
which i have opened in the second tab.
  (Also, i cannot delete a file from the local disc because the external drive
is read-only.)
  Edit: The second drive is also writable but if i open them both in two tabs,
i cant delete files or folders on the first and the second drive.
  If i open the two drives in two separate windows instead of tabs it works
alright.
  I hope you understand what i mean, it is really difficult to explain.
  Maybe i will record a video showing what happens and post a link...
  I tried to search for The Do in the search bar, but the space bar
  didn't write a space. Instead, it played the currently selected song
  (space is the shortcut for playing/pausing the song). I've just
  installed the last Hardy release candidate.
