This bug causes xserver to crash when using newer Nvidia drivers
(NVIDIA 495.46+) with Optimus. It's apparently triggered when using
the MATE desktop environment. It has been noticed on xorg-server-21.1,

It has been fixed already, but could you please backport the fix?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6

2019-02-13 Thread dlotton
For those using OpenVPN, I discovered that there is a package named
'openvpn-systemd-resolvd' that finally resolved this issue for me.
Here's the synopsis for the package in the repo...

"This is a helper script designed to integrate OpenVPN with the
systemd-resolved service via DBus instead of trying to override
/etc/resolv.conf, or manipulate systemd-networkd configuration files.

Since systemd-229, the systemd-resolved service has an API available via DBus
which allows directly setting the DNS configuration for a link. This script
makes use of busctl from systemd to send DBus messages to systemd-resolved to
update the DNS for the link created by OpenVPN."

Discussion in #1639776 indicate that we need new bug for this so I am
opening one ... Please don't mark this as duplicate to #1639776 or
other similar bug report. We already lost several months and we are
  again at beginning ...

  TL;DR; -> network-manager-1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 use DNS defined by
VPN (correct). network-manager-1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 use DNS from
DHCP instead of one defined by VPN (wrong).

DNS resolver should query only DNS servers defined by VPN while
  connection is active.

  =

  Test steps / result:

  - upgraded network-manager to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
(dnsmasq-base-2.75-1ubuntu0.16.04.2)
  - restated my laptop to ensure clean start
  - connected to VPN using openconnect / network-manager-openconnect-gnome

Observed results -> DNS queries are forwarded only to DNS servers
defined by LAN connection (this is wrong / connection not working at
  all)

  - "killall dnsmasq"
  - dnsmasq get automatically restarted by system

Observed results -> most of the the queries are forwarded to DNS
servers defined by VPN, but lot of queries get forwarded to DNS
servers defined by LAN connection (this is still wrong / DNS leaks,
attacker can hijack connection even if VPN is enabled)

  - I downgraded back network-manager to 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4 (dnsmasq-base
stay same)
  - restated my laptop to ensure clean test
  - connected to same VPN using openconnect

Observed results -> DNS queries are forwarded only to DNS servers
defined by VPN connection. There are no leaks to LAN DNS server (this
  is correct behavior).

  =

Paul Smith requested additional details in #1639776. Here are:

  * If you're using IPv4 vs. IPv6
-> IPv4 only. I have IPv6 set to ignore on all network definition (lan / wifi
/vpn)

  * If you have checked or unchecked the "Use this connection only for
resources on its network"
-> unchecked on all nw definition

  * If you have this checked, try unchecking it and see if that makes a
difference
-> no change if I toggle this option. Behavior is same.

  * When you say "DNS lookups" please be clear about whether the hostnames
being looked up are public (e.g., www.google.com or whatever), on your local
LAN, or in the network accessed via the VPN. Does it make a difference which
one you choose?
  -> No difference.

  * Are you using fully-qualified hostnames, or relying on the DNS domain
search path? Does it make a difference if you do it differently?
-> I normaly use FQDN due to nature of HTTPs cert validation. I don't see
difference when I try same using hostname + domain search.

  =

I am using openconnect (cisco) and openvpn. Test result are by using
openconnect but I saw same behaviour also while using openvpn.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6

2018-02-17 Thread dlotton
By far, the easiest and most effective workaround I've found is commenting out
"dns=dnsmasq" in "/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf" as a few others have
suggested above.

Disappointing that this continues to be an ongoing problem.

2017-09-05 Thread dlotton
Just an FYI, I have to downgrade both network-manager=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
and resolvconf=1.78ubuntu2. Doing one or the other would not fix the problem
on my system (Linux Mint Mate 18.1).

I'm using a PPTP tunnel.

Just did a fresh install of Mint Mate 18.2 onto a new machine. Same
problem exists. While connected to VPN DNS queries are leaking to non-

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-03-15 Thread dlotton
I've done some additional testing and it seems as though both the
network manager and the resolvconf package need to be downgraded to get
to a working state. If either or both are at the latest revision
(resolvconf = 1.78ubuntu4 and/or network-manager =
1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1) name resolution through the DNS specified by the
DHCP information for my PPTP tunnel (interface ppp0) doesn't work.

In some instances when one or both packages were at the latest revision name
resolution worked properly for a few minutes, then broke.

The only stable working configuration I've found is having BOTH packages
downgraded (resolvconf = 1.78ubuntu2 *AND* network-manager =
1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4).

Hope this is helpful.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1671964] Re: DNS fails after reconnecting to a VPN

2017-03-14 Thread dlotton
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1671606 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1671606

I have a similar problem. I tried rolling back the network manager from
1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 to 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4. Oddly, it seemed to fix DNS
for a few minutes, but it reverted to not working.

I noticed that a few days before the network manager was updated
resolvconf also updated. I believe resolvconf is responsible for
notifying applications (like the local resolver) when something like a
DHCP lease gets established and a new DNS server is needs to be pointed
to.

I downgraded resolvconf from 1.78ubuntu4 to 1.78ubuntu2 and this seems
to have fixed my problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-03-13 Thread dlotton
More input...

I downgraded the network manager from 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 to
1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4. Oddly, name resolution seemed to work for a few
minutes, then resumed the previous behavior where it would use the dhcp
specified DNS.

I downgraded resolvconf from 1.78ubuntu4 to 1.78ubuntu2. So far this
seems to be a sticky fix. So far still resolving names from remote DNS.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-03-13 Thread dlotton
It looks like the resolvconf package was updated on my machine on 3/2/2017
also. Isn't resolvconf responsible for updating DNS info when something like a
DNS lease is obtained?

I'm pretty sure I didn't see the problem until after the network-manager
package was updated around 3/8/2017, but maybe there was cached information
that allowed it to continue to work for a while. I'm not sure how all of this
plays together.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-03-13 Thread dlotton
network-manager:amd64 (1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4, 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1)

I'm seeing a very similar problem, except I'm using a PPTP tunnel. I'm
on a Mint MATE 18.1 distro. On approximately 3/8/2017 the network
manager package was updated and about that time is when name resolution
stopped working when connected to a PPTP tunnel.

I can see that the ppp0 interface is getting a DHCP address from the remote
end, and it is also receiving a DNS IP address for the remote network. That
information gets populated into 'etc/ppp/resolv.conf' and the timestamp for
that file corresponds to the date/time I establish the PPTP connection.

I am able to reach machines on the remote network by IP address. This worked
as of last week (approx 3/8/2017) and had been working for a year or more prior.

I'm not sure how the local resolver stuff works, but it seems like the
proper information is being retrieved from the remote end point (IP
address, DNS info, etc.), but the local resolver is not pulling in the
information.
